The idea with HG cassette core was to move the bearings from the middle of the HUB to be more closely as possible to the dropouts. It was very common in the time of "free wheels" cogset to have the axle bent. Unigllide and then HyperGlide manage to fix that problem. XD and MicroSpline moves the drive side bearing far from the dropouts. From an engineering point of view this is a step back. HyperGlide is a superior design. XD and MicroSpline works because now we have better materials than we had 30 years ago and the axle is an oversized pass though. But the only real benefit of XD and MicroSpline is the 10T cog: nothing more, nothing less. No wonder the only solution for 135mm QR is the FH-MT500, and maybe this is going to be the less reliable MicroSpline HUB in the lineup (but id does have a oversized axle, tough).
@@LoveMTB you are right on XD, but on Shimano MicroSpline Freehubs the bearing its in the same position as the cassette core pawls, far away from the dropout. Thank you for your videos. Great explanation about such delicated topic. Is it fair to say that an upgrade to 12 speed system the compatibility only depends on the wheel and freehub? Do I need to have any special attention to the frame?
I've got a question, my new wheels came with an HG, which was wrong, my old cassette was XD and all my components were gx, so what I've done now is have to buy a new 11 50 nx cassette to fit the HG, in your opinion is this technically a downgrade, is XD better than HG
Your video was very clear, but I want to make sure I understand properly. I have a 2020 Fathom 2 29” with the SX Eagle 12speed. My cassette was not torqued to spec causing premature wear on the freehub. It’s gotten so bad that it needs replacing. According to this video, I need to replace it with the older Shimano design rather than the XD Driver? What makes the SX and GX different from NX and others?
@@LoveMTB Alright, I understand. Finding the part is proving to be rather difficult as I cannot find one for 12 speed. The sizing is confusing to me as well.
I bought Jamis Hardline A2 2021 with Shimano Deore m6100 casette, which is 12-speed, also in stock it cames with MT-410 rear hub but already with microspline! Honestly I don't really like hubs with microspline, because they're very quiet compared to other hubs. So, I think I'm gonna buy another rear hub, but i don't know if the casette will be compatible with 12 speed non-microspline hub
The hub needs to have a slightly longer freehub to accept 11 speed cassette on shimano style. Hubs witch are rated for 11 speed sprockets have a longer freehub and they comme with a small spacer for fewer gears sprockets compatibility.
One day, the shift will be so light that you will be able to drive not only vertically but even upside down. They will combine it with anti gravity tires.
Great video! I just upgraded SRAM 1x11 to Eagle 1x12. I have XD Compatible free hub on my DT Swiss hub. The 1x12 goes on easy enough and I can access all the gears except the 10 tooth cog. There is little clearance between the 10 tooth cog and the frame and the Eagle derailleur won't go out that far even with high screw maxed out. This is a 2017 Pivot Mach 429 with thru axle. Everything I've read says if free hub says 'XD Compatible' this should work but it seems I need a slightly longer free hub or end cap to account for the one extra gear and create the necessary space between the 10 tooth cog and the frame. Any guidance on this is greatly appreciated!!!
@@LoveMTB thanks for reply but that’s not it. I adjusted high screw before installing cable and could see then it could not go far enough to align to the 10t and if it did and chain was on 10t then chain would rub frame. Seems I need a longer end cap? Is that an option? Wish I could attach picture
@@LoveMTB thanks again for reply checked that again multiple times now I've had the cassette on and off. Here's what I don't get: the SRAM 11 Spd cassette is 41mm tall. The 12 speed eagle is 48mm tall. They both appear to have the same inward 'dish' to the largest gear so the 12 speed doesn't sit closer to the spokes best I can tell. So if the cassette is taller and there are no spacers to remove from the 11 speed it seems this is my clearance problem with the frame. How is it supposed to work that a taller 12 speed cassette can work on same free hub as shorter 11 speed? My end cap is 16mm it seems if that was 23mm it would all work. I really appreciate your insights!
@@brettphaneuf It's in the dish. And something else is going one, I have never seen something like you're describing. Unless frame is that old and you don't have nough clearance? You are not using a Boost endcap in a non-Boost setup are you?

I have a question. The 11-51 11 speed shimano 5100 setup uses the old shimano hub. Correct? Would I be correct in saying this is a better choice as I see allot of videos of people complaining about the shimano brand micro spline 12 speed hub for creaking noise. Problem with some plastic clip which they said in the beginning do not lubricate but now they do. I have seen allot of people saying they have had it with the 12 speed hubs from shimano and went with another brand like hope.

Great video! quick questions, as an example can the shimano deore hubs with the standard shimano freehub be converted to the new micro spline? Also if you wanted to convert say a shimano deore hubs from 9mm qr to 15mm thru axle, is it as simple as just removing the end piece adapter? I'm just getting into Mountain biking (first legit bike for me) and curious to learn more. Thanks.
Depending on your hub manufacturer. E.g. mavic and novatec allow you to change your freehub body instead of whole hub set. You can checkup for other makes on their websites.

Thanks greatly for explaining. The sram xd free hub can take a lot off punishment. As I ran 12 speed GX for two years. But now have a new Specialized Kenovo Expert and it runs 11 speed Sram PG-1130 but because off the torque of ebike it has gouged the free hub very badly. The material in the free hub is substandard and had to filed the teeth on the 10 & 11th gears and free hub as heavily gouged and worn after 270 miles I mean not a lot off riding and as someone has said the materials used could be a lot better.
I have a Shimano rear hub with HG free hub for 12 speed 11-51T cassette for 12x148 boost frame. Can I swap out with Shimano Microspline free hub? Does Shimano make interchangeable driver for this scenario?
So I have a Giant Talon 3 with 8 speed Shimano cassette. I changed that out to a Shimano 10 Deore M 6000 cassette. Now I have bought a Shimano SLX 11 speed cassette, 11-40 ,that will work with my Shimano freehub?

Great video! What freehub body will be compatible with a shimano slx 11speed cassette. I’m new to the sport.. lol
Well done, very informative!
nice video, this was clear and helpful
Thanks for that clarification. 💯
Got my sub..
So if i understand u right, on a Sram NX Eagle 11-50 12-Speed Cassette (PG-1230) does not fit a XD Hub ?
No, NX uses the standard Hyperglide or HG freehub.
And welcome!
Great explanation about such delicated topic. Is it fair to say that an upgrade to 12 speed system the compatibility only depends on the wheel and freehub? Do I need to have any special attention to the frame?
Amazing content!❤️❤️❤️
I've got a question, my new wheels came with an HG, which was wrong, my old cassette was XD and all my components were gx, so what I've done now is have to buy a new 11 50 nx cassette to fit the HG, in your opinion is this technically a downgrade, is XD better than HG
It's a 150 grams downgrade otherwise it will work similar.
@@LoveMTB Thanks for your help and for the quick response!
When will the day arrive when the cassette will be the size of the wheel?
@@rosomak8244 they’ve stopped at 52T for now 😊
One day, the shift will be so light that you will be able to drive not only vertically but even upside down. They will combine it with anti gravity tires.
Which hub is required by the AdventX Derailleur+cogs? The old Shimano? In the past, I read that it used a freewheel.
Wow. Great explanation. Thanks for keeping it short 👍
Cable tension then, or remove cable altogether and you should be on tha 10T cog.
@@brettphaneuf you did not tighten the cassette properly? 40Nm? Properly seated on the spline?
All good except theres two lengths of the og shimano freehub body. shoter for 8,9,10 and 1.8mm longer for 11speed
@@LoveMTBIsnt it that a 11speed mtb cassette does not fit the shorter body, or the longer body with the spacer?
@@LoveMTB Ok I watched too many roadie videos. Ur right!! This saved me from buying an extra wheel!! 💪Thanks man! 😊
Tnis was very helpful. Thank you.
So helpful thank you!
It turns out even Deore M6100 12s uses the microspline hub and offers the same 10-51 cassette.
What hub body does the 12 speed shimano deore use
Super helpful video. Thanks.
Can we replace the freehub body of XTR M9100 from Microspline to the previous 11 speed freehub body? I like the silent system of the new XTR hub.
Informative vid, but I need your opinion. I have a 12s sram nx eagle cogs and I'm thinking to pair it with dabomb hub 10-11s compatible but the store said it fit on my 12s cogs. hope you can help me, Thank you
Nice video. Will my Shimano FH-M475 hub w/ 9mm QR be compatible with the XD driver? I might want to upgrade to the SRAM wireless Eagle system w/ 12 speed cassette. Thanks
Thanks for video!
Why don’t bike shop what to convert an 9 speed XT hub in to an 11 or 12 speed cassette?
I have a 9 speed shimano free hub with a 142 boost hub will I be able to fit a sram nx cassette to it
This vidoe is great
Thank u this video helps me a lot 😀😀😀
Drop out spacing is the same across all these choices?
so if I have SRAM NX Eagle, 12-speed, 11-50t...I would need Microspline hub on new set of wheels?
I didn't hear anything about rear axel width 135 or 142mm. I heard 135mm XD was limited to 11 speeds on upgraded hubs.
Hi, I have a question to the bike marlin6 (2019) like the one in your videos, can i put the micro spliene without changing the entire mass?( It is the best video I have seen explaining this) thanks
Bonjour, j'ai un vtt en 2x10 shimano deodore. Je vais passé en 1x11. (11/52T) j'espère que ça va aller dessus. Merci
I am using shimano Hubs with 12speed deore.
I want to change to sram gx 12 speed.
My question is, can i just buy an xd driver and replace my microspline driver so that gx can be compatible?
Ooor, i will change my whole Rear Hub?
Thanks for the answer
Great video! quick questions, as an example can the shimano deore hubs with the standard shimano freehub be converted to the new micro spline?
Also if you wanted to convert say a shimano deore hubs from 9mm qr to 15mm thru axle, is it as simple as just removing the end piece adapter? I'm just getting into Mountain biking (first legit bike for me) and curious to learn more. Thanks.
Depending on your hub manufacturer. E.g. mavic and novatec allow you to change your freehub body instead of whole hub set. You can checkup for other makes on their websites.
Well done and concise explanation. Thank you!
Hi thank you for this amazing video. I am brand new to mtb. My neighbor donated a 2017 Scott gambler 720 to me before they moved
I am trying to upgrade the drive train to something more than 7 speed. It currently has a FORMULA DHL-150 HUB. I can't find anything online on what drive train I can upgrade to. I don't mind spending money to get this to at least 11speed but I would prefer 12 speed. Any chance you might know what the highest drive train I can use? Thank you
Is 7 speed free wheel hub can upgrade to 9 or 10 speed, with out changing the freewheel hub..boss...
Thank you so much!
Shimano HG hub MT200-B,with 9sp.11 Speed Cassette will fits ?
Succinct and to the point. Good job.
Thank you very much for great explanation!
I have microspline hub (Shimano FH-MT410-B) and want to use it with HG compatible cassette.
Can microspline freehub body be replaced with HG (old type) freehub body?
@@LoveMTB Thank you!
