In 2019 I went to Japan and was hyped to hit game stores in Akihabara. I expected to load up on Japanese games and consoles in their home country, abundant and dirt cheap. I had the harsh reality check that shops in Japan more or less go by online prices 😭😭 Probably partially because tourists like me take games out of local circulation. There’s only so many good copies out there, so games just kinda trickle out over time. Kind of a bummer looking at it from a Japanese perspective.
Feels like most of this only applies to people from the states, though some of the European boxes weren't great either. We had our own problems like how the cd case spindle ring thing or whatever its called was sometimes too small(!) or broke, meaning the disk fell inside the case and sometimes even dropped out.
I lived in small town China as a kid, and the only console people had back then seemed to be counterfeit NES. I remember in the mid-late 90's a bunch of small gaming parlors came up where you could pay to play modern consoles, and a lot of them had Saturns for some reason. Played many of my first fighting games on the Saturn.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Sega first release the long box jewel case, with their Sega CD games, long before both the Sega Saturn and PSX? And also, aren't they all pretty much exactly the same design? I actually bought replacements for my Saturn and Sega CD games. A case of brand new copies of NBA Jam for the Sega CD, and Fighting Vipers for the Saturn. Both set of games came out to around $1.20 per game when buying 12 of each from eBay in 1999. (The good old days!) I still have several of both titles (+insert and disc) left over. I recall both sets of cases being identical.
There should be foam insert which sits between the disc and manual inside the case. It helped to keep the front of the case from being pressed in and getting damaged. It also kept the manual from sagging. Most people threw it away when they opened the game for the first time. You can buy replacement foam pieces on eBay now though.
Been collecting Saturn since the end of 2017 (bad timing I know) but I decided it would be my current gen console after Nintendo canned Wii U. It's been pricey, but at least it's not AES collecting 😅 I made sure to find things as complete as possible and as mint as I could find. Amazing library of games and yes the look outstanding on a shelf. A random bit of info on the Saturn cases is people think they are the same as SEGA CD cases. But they are slightly different. The hinges are different so the the front of a SEGA CD case and the back of a Saturn case or vice versa, aren't a match a won't really fit together.
The little foam blocks actually help a lot to keep the manuals straight. You can buy those online, or make your own out of window weatherproofing foam strips sold at the hardware store.
Sega Saturn Game came pretty good hard wearing solid plastic cases here in Europe/PAL releases. Particularly the later games. All mine are still perfect!
You might want to get yourself a Saturn at this point if there are any old classics you still wanted to play. There's at least 4 different ways to play iso backups on the system that work really well, I'd recommend the 'Mode' by terroronion. Burned disk backups work with just a simple mod. And there's even wireless controllers for modern convenience.
Try the European cases. Our original ones were two bits of plastic held together with cardboard that would just fall to pieces. They then replaced them with much sturdier plastic cases which are really solid. As for Playstation (1) we get massive oversized jewel like cases which again self destruct.
Just got on the saturn train about a month ago. It’s a strange console that i never did have experience with back when it was new (thank god i chose N64 though). It is absolutely insane how the crappier US version of these games are skyrocketing in price. I do like this console though, it actually has a lot to offer and with action replay or pseudo you can just boot up any japanese game for a fraction of the price. And then when you’re done with it you can actually store the cases in a small area! I always heard that they opted for the giant cases because there was a huge amount of left over sega cd cases in the US and it would have been more expensive for them to manufacture the standard size jewel cases. Not sure how true that is.
I'm 42 and I remember my system I had to sell all my systems through the years poor at times. Saturn was amazing all the rpg games were quite amazing the Sega CD Sega Saturn and the Dreamcast. Except 32 X 32 x with a piece of s***. Lol
Sega Saturn and Dreamcast had one of the greatest games ever made. Shining Force, Sakura Wars, Dragon Force, Panzer Dragoon, Skies of Arcadia is one of the greatest games ever made. Better than Final Fantasy 7, Zelda Ocarina of Time. Its ridiculous and so fucking expensive. I get pissed at Sega for never porting these.
I had to print out the translations and read along while i played. Wish we would of got US versions. Guardian Heros and Drahon force were also top tier
I've just begun recollecting for the Sega Saturrn after losing all my Sega stuff a while back. I'm only collecting the good games tho, stuff paying big bucks for a shit game just because it's rare to find.
It is? I finished a Japanese full set in late 2006, including demos, limited editions, re-releases and so on. Took "just" 7 years. Never bothered with US or European stuff.
The Saturn absolutely destroyed the N64 in the east, this guy clearly doesn't know what he's talking about - or only talking from a sheltered US point of view. Even in Japan the Saturn far outsold the PS1 until FF7 came out. The library is almost 3 times the size of the 64 as well. Well, what do you expect from the social justice laughing stock of the gaming "journalism" world 🤣
Sega CD collectors face the same issue, all 6 of us.
I loved watching my copy of Panzer Dragoon Saga go up in value on pricecharting. Bought it for $320 in 2013. It's now at $1200.
Sega Saturn: I am a nightmare to collect games for.
Neo Geo: Are you sure about that?
Saturn is amazing, I still have mine hooked up.
One of the best home consoles ever made.
I still have a US and Japanese Sega Saturn in my collection.
I still play dragon force and guardian hero's glad i held on to them. Shi bj ing force 3 is collecting dust though
Why is there no more of this series?! It’s awesome! Please bring it back…

In the West, yes. But in Japan, it was popular. I just discovered about Sakura Taisen and I'm amazed with it.

Love my Saturn. Favorite system of all time. Put a fenrir in mine to extend its life.
Best part about the Saturn was the d-pad
Best fighting 6 button controller ever! PS couldnt touch the Saturn in that department.

YOU MEAN, SKAVEN. CHAOS RATMEN.???!
Sega Saturn Game came pretty good hard wearing solid plastic cases here in Europe/PAL releases. Particularly the later games. All mine are still perfect!
I just bought an hdmi converter and it looks amazing!!!!
I never had a Saturn. At the time it broke my heart. Now I'm glad I stuck with Playstation and N64

Little late for the party but...
Happy 25th anniversary to Sega Saturn.
My very first entry into 3d gaming!!!!
I had panzer dragoon saga and I sold it for 2$ I regret my life choices
Take care, Chris!
お疲れ様でした!
Segata Sanshiro died for our video game sins
Extremely collectable stuff you have there.
Now look at the PAL saturn cases, even when they were new they delaminated themselves from the simple act of using them.
Try the European cases. Our original ones were two bits of plastic held together with cardboard that would just fall to pieces. They then replaced them with much sturdier plastic cases which are really solid. As for Playstation (1) we get massive oversized jewel like cases which again self destruct.
We had such better packaging in the UK. More like DVD cases. Am grateful.
Except the first wave of games had the worst packaging in history. Cardoard on the outside with glued plastic pieces which didnt hold the game
So true preach on brother this is why I collect for the Japanese segasaturn I do have a few usa games yes it's a on going night mare
The European Saturn cases needed them for their 600 languages
It isn't a nightmare if you know what you are doing.
very happy I have my copy of Magic Knight Rayearth complete tucked away
Video was made so he could write off Saturn games as work expenses for taxes right?
I still have my entire Saturn collection. And my OG Xbox.
PAL Saturn collectors might have some extra problems to add to this video hahaha
I'd probably have bought one of I knew it existed back then.
Heard you on retronauts a bunch of times, but damn dude you’re good on camera
It seems they went the opposite direction with ps1. Standard jewl cases. Here in Europe, we got fat ps1 cases that are expensive to replace.

Should have chosen a playstation instead ;)
I vividly remember Panzer Dragoon, Clockwork Knight, and Scud Disposable Assasin lol
Same, except switch Scud out for Bug and Bug Too
I have Dragon Force, Guardian heroes and Three Dirty Dwarves
I'm 42 and I remember my system I had to sell all my systems through the years poor at times. Saturn was amazing all the rpg games were quite amazing the Sega CD Sega Saturn and the Dreamcast. Except 32 X 32 x with a piece of s***. Lol
Shining Force 3 scenario 1, 2 and 3 the best game ever made
Yes, yes, yes!!!

@@maforo85 Skies of Arcadia was also on the GC
I remember almost picking out buring rangers and got megan man 8 instead.
I just want a Saturn with an ODE
Good news, the Mode exists now, as well as the satiator going into production soon.
Fun Fact, in Japan Saturn was a strong second place, Segas most successful system in Japan and Nintendo 64 was Third
Thats weird. Mine are all still fine and have went through 7 moves. 🤷🏻♂️
Congrats?
i bought Panzer 1 & Saga in 2002 for $150.
thinking of selling it & buying a motorcycle... better replay it.
I never used the cases anyways, always had a funcoland zip case, problem solved 🤷♂️.

The PAL boxes are slightly better boxes, the early ones where a bit naff, but later on we got some really nice ones
ı like saturn eu cases. even the smells good.
I still play mine👍
Thought you were gonna talk about disc rot.
It is? I finished a Japanese full set in late 2006, including demos, limited editions, re-releases and so on. Took "just" 7 years.

Retro youtubers are to blame
Don't hate the game
Hate the player
Its so true
