Signify was a real breakthrough. "Porkypine" Tree evolved from their early work to make a statement that they were here to stay. Wilson's persistent dark, melancholy undertones were embedded here and forever remained. This kicks off my preferred era of PTree music - Signify, Stupid Dream, Lightbulb Sun, In Absentia. Beyond this, the band evolves to a more metalish soundscape which I find "significantly" less special or endearing.
I had to rep the LORD as people were making me out to be some giant lefty. I am neither Left nor Right. I am the property of Jesus and he doesn’t vote.
@@TheProgCorner I am with you on that! Got to say my list is a tad different but I love peoples perspectives as it can help how I may hear an album. My list would be: 11 - On Sunday 10 - Up the Downstairs 9 - Sky Moves Sidesways 8 - Signify 7 C/C (was pretty disappointed with this one outside of a couple songs) 6 - (The rest of these for me are pinnacle) The Incident 5 -Lightbulb Sun 4 Stupid Dream 3 In Absentia 2 - Deadwing 1 - Fear of Blank Planet. Have to give an honorable mention to Recordings in this too even though it isnt technically and album of its own. Have a good one!!
So happy to see that shirt Scott and know that you're a fellow believer, although I suspected it from your content and the way you act. You are a kind, genuine person and that comes through in the way you talk. It's evident you've been changed by the Grace of God. Love your channel and this was a great ranking. I personally have a soft spot for Stupid Dream as it was my first exposure to PT so it's high on my list, but otherwise my ranking is very similar.
I appreciate that. As a Christian I will (hopefully) never deny my beliefs but I try not to push it too much on a channel about music. I think if you are truly saved then people see it. They detect it.
It’s pretty obvious, he talks like a preacher and seems to have had gone through some substance abuse problems and is probably a recovered addict which flips people into believers usually, especially if they go through the 12 step program.
Ive just got into porcupine tree (thanks to previous videos you posted) so this video is very welcome. I only have 'fear of a blank planet' and 'in absentia' which i like alot.
Great video. I have a hard time with PT. I need to keep trying. The Sky Moves Sideways is easily my favorite. Special mention goes to the Voyage 34 compilation.
Scot... PT. What a journey Steven Wilson and this baby are on. I do like The Incident a lot , The Sky moves sideways is just pipped by Deadwing however for me. An incredible outfit... great video man !!! 😍
I love me some Porcupine Tree - I love how there feels like such a mastery as the band moves along and progressses from the more Floyd and spacerock early works to the more alternative sounds and into the heavier progrock. My first was 'Signify,' so it holds a special place - I think In Absentia is my no. 1, but one that seems to climb the ranks more and more for me is 'Sky Moves Sideways.' - It feels sort of like Wilson's take on Wish you Were Here.
Excellent rankings. Can't really argue. Personally my fav is Lightbulb Sun. It has more diversity. I play it most along with FOABP. Great band. Cheers Scot.
I’m somewhat new to PT. I haven’t listened to their entire catalog yet, but what I have listened to my favorite is In Absentia and Fear of a black planet. Jesus is my King.
You have the 2nd best hair on RUclips after Phil McCracken! Enjoyed your ranking. I just could never get totally into Porcupine Tree and ended up selling the CDs I did have, but I love Steven Wilson's solo career.
Great ranking Scot. I’ve been following PT since the beginning and I think your ranking is pretty right on … except for the last 2 I would put In Absentia as number one. I absolutely love that one but I love them all 🤘
Great review Scot. I love the Tree but can't rank 'em today as I haven't listened to them for a while. Top Five includes In Absentia, Fear of a Blank Planet, Signify and Lightbulb Sun. Since I love The Raven That Refused To Sing I hope a solo Steven Wilson album ranking is coming next? Cheers.
Good ranking, love Porcupine Tree here’s mine: 11. On the Sunday of Life... 10. Up the Downstair 9. Stupid Dream 8. The Incident 7. Signify 6. The Sky Moves Sideways 5. Lightbulb Sun 4. Closure/Continuation 3. In Absentia 2. Deadwing 1. Fear of a Blank Planet
Way to go, Scot ! Always a golden opportunity to weigh in on PT. ‘ Signify ‘ was the album that opened the door for me, due to its heavy PF influence. I really like ‘ Fear ‘ but ultimately, In Absentia stole my soul for life. It’s a true work of perfection. And only PT could make an album about serial killers and turn it into a treasure. The Genius of Steven Wilson. Plus, I never thought about the comparison of Lightbulb Sun to the Animals album. But I’m not surprised. The Sky Moves Sideways is very Floydish. Even though you’re not wild about ‘ Moonloop’, I can’t help but wonder if that song wasn’t inspired by Camel’s ‘ Lunar Sea ‘ ?? There are striking similarities.
Well, they are actually very different songs. But they both take you on that ambient journey in which most of us prog heads love. However, I do prefer Lunar Sea over Moonloop.
Porcupine Tree is a top-five band for me, I'd rank the albums as 1) Deadwing 2) In Absentia 3) Lightbulb Sun 4) Fear of a Blank Planet 5) Stupid Dream 6) Signify 7) Up the Downstair 8) The Sky Moves Sideways 9) Closure/Continuation 10) The Incident 11) On the Sunday of Life
Gran video. Sé que the incident suele estar menos valorado que el resto, pero a mí me encanta quizas porque fue el primero que escuché de la banda y me sorprendió oir algo que me recordaba a pink floyd. mi favorito por esto es fear of a blank planet
Like you said, there are so many great PT albums. They are all different, but all come with PT's own trademark sound. I got a brain injury and just wanted to recover and do nothing much at home. I found PT's music to be so therapeutic. Turn it down low and it's great to sleep to. When you're awake, the gentle chord progressions are interesting to follow in your mind. You can drift off into the ambient soundscapes and then the abrupt changes keep your mind alive. I get the feeling that PT do their best work when they're just noodling around in the studio and going with the flow. Like Steven has said, if it feels good and interesting to dynamically vary the tempo of a song, just do it. Then you've got Gavin's disciplined drumming which adds an extra dimension to the songs. PT are just a fantastic band.
You mentioned in this video Animals by Pink Floyd is your favorite Pink Floyd album and that made me wonder whether you've heard Animals 2018 remix. It gives Animals an even more incredible sound than it already had Imo.
I came into Porcupine Tree around Stupid Dream / Lightbulb Sun when a student brought it along. I went back and found everything and loved some of the earlier experimental stuff as it reminds me of some things I was trying around that time - SW and I are a similar edge. Fripp appeared on an early No Man album so Steve and him already had that connection.
Ow man i love PT, i have a obsession of them. I collect almost everything, except the "crazy"prices of some items;). I hope someday they release a repressing of live in Tilburg on vinyl🙏Peace
Pretty rare for someone to do a ranking and I agree with pretty much everything. The only quibble I might have is bumping up Stupid Dream one or two spots but otherwise, 100% on this. Fear is my favourite, with In Absentia, Lightbulb Sun, and Deadwing close behind.
i came in the other entrance through steven wilson's solo work. but fear of a blank planet was my first pt album, it's great. just to say that the raven that refused to sing felt like a prog liferaft for the twenty first century when i found it!
Love the psychedelic period the most. Up The Downstairs is a trip of an album and for me is up there with my other favourites In Absentia, Stupid Dream, Lightbulb Sun, Signify and The Sky Moves Sideways. Not so keen on what followed the superb In Absentia. i think things became a little formulaic thereafter, although i was with them from the beginning in'93 to their Royal Albert Hall finale in 2010.
I kind of view PT's album's in 4 groups, the first 3 albums, then Signify thru Lightbuld Sun, then In Absentia thru Fear of a Blank Planet, then The Incident and Closure/Continuation. My order of preference is largely by these groups, so In Absentia thru Fear as the 3 best, then Signify thru Lightbulb Sun as 4 thru 6, then The Incident and C/C as 7 & 8, and then the first 3 albums. Ranking within these groups is tough but I'd say Fear, In Absentia, and the Deadwing (but these are almost too close to call), then Lightbuld Sun, Signify, and Stupid Dream. I place C/C just a notch higher than The Incident. For the first 3, I'd go in reverse order so The Sky Moves Sideways, Up the Downstairs, and then On the Sunday of Life. As collections go, as you said, there are no bad albums here.
The most important band of the nineties And I would say that Signify changed my life. I saw them in Athens only once in the past. Your list is good but I would reffer ; 1)Signify 2)Sky moves sideways 3)Up the downstairs 4)Fear of a blank planet 5) In absentia. 6) Comma Divine (the best live in Prog Rock music )
As with most prog bands, I haven't heard them all yet, but I do love everything I've heard from PT. I even love On the Sunday of Life. I always think of that one as kind of Syd Barrett-era Floyd with DSOTM-era Gilmour guitar pyrotechnics, which just hits oddly, like watching a Restoration-era period movie, but all of the costumes have zippers in them.
Porcupine Tree is my favorite band since their beginnings My top 5 Deadwing In Absentia Lightbulb Sun Fear Of A Blank Planet Stupid Dream My favorite live album is Warszawa (killer)
The incident on 10? I really like the album. Possibly in my top 3 but it was the second album i bought and time flies was the first porcupine tree song i have ever heard. Same for the first album. It was the first i bought on vinyl by porcupine tree. I think i would rank it higher and i like the psychedelic stuff
Now ive finished the video I thought I had tuned into the wrong channel. Where was the opening? It’s not Scot if we dont have the opening. I know you threw it in but jeez man. Don’t scare me like that again. You are the man with this ranking. Spot on! Take care. Dave✅✅
Ah yes!!! The “buried intro.” It might become a thing. My analytics are telling me to GET TO THE POINT quicker. The concept is SBV: Seconds Before Value. How long does it take for the presenter to get to the topic…
No bummers in this catalogue and i agree with the comments on 'On the Sunday of Life' but I would have 'Up the Downstair' way higher (it was the first one that I heard so that always helps and it is a perfect blend of psych and Floydian prog) I'm also a bit contrarian in that my numbers 1 and 2 would be The Sky Moves Sideways and Lightbulb Sun.
I have the 2017 remaster of Deadwing. It's the only Porcupine Tree I own. (I know sad). I do have Steve Wilson's solo album Hand.Cannot.Erase. That might be a bit of saving grace. I would confidently say "Lazarus" is my favorite PT song. ITS AWESOME!!! I LOVE IT!!! 😎
Porcupine Tree, low hanging fruit for sure. I pretty well love everything Steven & Co released. I even like all the comps and EPs and whatnots. The Complete Voyage was a bit of a soundtrack back in the day. No sense in ranking as things change like the weather. Everything from Sky to Closure is stellar. Of course we all know that PT are one of the pre-eminent modern prog bands. My ears always prick up whenever I hear mention of Steven's name. BTW I really dig that Zon album back there. I've noticed it hanging around for the last little while. Hmm...you should say something about?
Not familiar with a couple of those bands. Zon and Angel I know. I also know the early 70s hard funk band Magnum (excellent stuff btw) but not the rock band?
Oh man, Signify is one of my favorite Porcupine Tree albums, I play it all the time. Deadwing is probably my second favorite. We're not too far apart on the rankings.
I have never heard a single bar of Porcupine Tree. However, after this video, you've whetted my curiosity so I shall endeavour to rectify my ignorance by purchasing a copy of Blank Planet. PS If you received those discs of UNIT tracks I sent to you, please don't take too many headache pills at once - bad for the stomach, you know!
"Stupid Dream" I feel should be a *bit* higher, at the very least. "Lightbulb Sun" and "Fear of a Blank Planet" I feel are always overrated. I stopped paying attention after Deadwing though; so, not sure about "The Incident" and "Closure/Continuation". However, I definitely liked that one track off the lastest, that they used as a pre-release promo, which I *did* hear at the time. As for the first two, they obviously are what they are... I've always been set on "TSMS", "Signify", "Stupid Dream", "In Absentia", and "Deadwing" as being the top-5 from them, while never sure how to rank them from one another...(?) 🤔
great show. i love porcupine tree. i hear it like this, deadwing fear sky moves in absentia metanoia nil recurring lightbulb sun stupid dream signify voyage 34 up downstair H/C on sunday of life incident recordings
The only band in the world I skipped on buying the studio albums and bought the live ones instead. My favorite live band. The acoustics, arrangements, and atmospheric elements are way superior live.
I agree with most of your rankings, other than #1. And I know many don't agree with me, but Nil Recurring > Fear of a Blank Planet FOABP to me is way too lyrical and a downer and when I've done PT album rankings in the past, is usually towards the bottom (it's better than On the Sunday of Life at least). the trilogy of Lightbulb Sun In Absentia and Deadwing is as good of a 3-album run over the last 25 years. LS for me being their best.
I'd have Deadwing no.1 then In Absentia and Fear, the others are near enough the same. I'd also put The Incident above Closure/Continuation not impressed with that one at all, love Signify and Sky Moves Sideways and Up the Downstairs. Good list, great band, seen them live just twice during Deadwing and Fear tours. Great shows as good as Floyd without the great cost.
“The Nostalgia Factory”! “Nine Cats”! “Linton Samuel Dawson”! “And the Swallows Dance Above the Sun”! “Queen Quotes Crowley”! All the BEST stuff! (I don’t see why “Radioactive Toy” is the song that found life beyond this album; I think it’s boring.) My performance of “Nine Cats”: m.ruclips.net/video/bN7BwsFClJ8/видео.html
I, too, rate that shirt and for the same reasons - Jesus doesn't vote and nor do I, especially as British politics are a total joke. Anyway, although I've heard of Porcupine Tree, I have yet to hear a single note of the music. Now, after this video, I am mightily intrigued to amend that omission so thank you for this.
Great video Scot! #11 the incident (at least it has a fitting title) #10 on the sunday of life #9 ⬆️ the downstair #8 lightbulb sun #7 the sky moves ↔️ #6 stupid dream #5 signify #4 in absentia #3 closure / continuation #2 fear of a blank planet #1 deadwing🎶🥁🎸🎹🎤🎉🏆

@@TheProgCorner changing that in your videos would be like you going to have a short back and sides at the barbers. Dont do it man!!
Nice!!!! Every album is worthy!
What a great song!!!!!
great list Scot but id switch your 1 and 2.
I almost did!!!! It’s that close!!!!
It’s a clue…

Professor Plum in the conservatory with the wrench.
🤔
Zon, Aviary, Angel, Trillion, New England and Magnum. (A future SOT episode: Pomp Rock!!!)
Sounds good.
I am going through the CDs now!!!! You are a madman!!!!
A man wakes up as a ghost...and doesn't get the joke...
Hey Scot! Put a hat on before you scare somebody! Lol!!!🦔🌳☮️👑👍😎
😱😱😱
Lightbulb Sun!!! 🙏
So good!!!
Fear of the Blank Planet is a MASTERPIECE!!!!
Indeed it is.
I love Porcupine Tree! Steven Wilson is awesome!
Absolutely!!!👍
"Stupid Dream" I feel should be a *bit* higher, at the very least. "Lightbulb Sun" and "Fear of a Blank Planet" I feel are always overrated. I stopped paying attention after Deadwing though; so, not sure about "The Incident" and "Closure/Continuation". However, I definitely liked that one track off the lastest, that they used as a pre-release promo, which I *did* hear at the time. As for the first two, they obviously are what they are... I've always been set on "TSMS", "Signify", "Stupid Dream", "In Absentia", and "Deadwing" as being the top-5 from them, while never sure how to rank them from one another...(?) 🤔
I read about PT in the psych magazine "Freakbeat."
They were 100% psych back in the day!!!
great show. i love porcupine tree. i hear it like this,
deadwing
fear
sky moves
in absentia
metanoia
nil recurring

Great video.
In Absentia
Deadwing
Fear of a Blank Planet
Closure/Continuation
Stupid Dream
Lightbulb Sun
Nice!!!!!
WHICH Dave Stewart? Hatfield and the North Dave Stewart, or Eurythmics Dave Stewart?
Exactly!!!! I believe Egg, Hatfield, National Health dude…
I like both though I’m less familiar with the prog/Canterbury Stewart. I just listened for the first time to Hatfield and the North last week.
Opeth, Mars Volta, and Pain of Salvation please!
Definitely!!! Mars Volta probably first…
The only band in the world I skipped on buying the studio albums and bought the live ones instead. My favorite live band. The acoustics, arrangements, and atmospheric elements are way superior live.
Yep.
While I like live albums too. I really love the studio albums in 5.1 surround sound. Steven is a master of that.
I agree with most of your rankings, other than #1. And I know many don't agree with me, but
Nil Recurring > Fear of a Blank Planet
FOABP to me is way too lyrical and a downer and when I've done PT album rankings in the past, is usually towards the bottom (it's better than On the Sunday of Life at least).
the trilogy of Lightbulb Sun In Absentia and Deadwing is as good of a 3-album run over the last 25 years. LS for me being their best.
Funny how that works!!!! 👍👍👍
Lightbulb Sun is probably my personal favorite but I don't think they put out any bad albums.
Nope!!!!
👋😀
Signify
Up the Downstairs
Fear of...
I love Signify!!!!!!!
Amazing!!!!
The best!
So good it hurts.
I LOOOOOVE SIGNAFY!!!!!!!
Me too!!!
I sometimes disagree (slightly) with you Scot but not this time. This ranking is right on. And yes, C/C is at its place.
Awesome!!!! I think that’s about right…
Shesmovedon is a great song!!
You’re out of your mind! On The Sunday of Life is the best one!
I like them all!!!!!
“The Nostalgia Factory”! “Nine Cats”! “Linton Samuel Dawson”! “And the Swallows Dance Above the Sun”! “Queen Quotes Crowley”! All the BEST stuff!
(I don’t see why “Radioactive Toy” is the song that found life beyond this album; I think it’s boring.)
My performance of “Nine Cats”: m.ruclips.net/video/bN7BwsFClJ8/видео.html
Lazarus is one of the best songs ever!!
It really is.
Awesome!!!! Let me know what you think. I love them but it’s not your Dad’s Prog!!!
Where's the hat?
Weird, right???
Nah, yer hair looks nice @@TheProgCorner
@duncefunce1513 Thank you!!!!

We are close…
I’m of a mind with your spouse: I don’t consider PT prog either.
Then, I also don’t consider Pink Floyd to be prog.
I try to keep an open mind…
