Hi Scot!! Excellent show!!! The joy, the energy you put into this video (and many others of course) is just amazing!!! Great records : King Crimson "Red", Mahavishnu Orchestra "Birds Of Fire", National Health, Harmonium, Museo Rochenbach, Eloy, Big Big Train, Rush "Moving Pictures". So glad you mentioned one of my favorite bands: Fairport Convention although I think only the first five albums have something of prog like "A Sailor's Life", "Sloth" or the great "Matty Groves" !! I like Quintessence too but I think it's much more psychedelic than prog. Jethro Tull I agree with you they have a lot of folk but much more blues and rock (even hard rock!)!. "TFTO" by Yes was the most expected choice and indeed it's a good album(not my favorite but who really cares??!!). See you my American friend!!
That Harmonium album is a recent acquisition for me. Fantastic! Also nice to hear you mention Fred Frith. Some really bizarre and exemplary stuff out there. I often play his awesome Gravity album. Cheers.
Excellent Scot !...I would have to go with EGG ( The Polite Force ), but the Canterbury scene I love all of it. One of the strongest sub - genres for me. Thanks for minimizing them, it's too exhausting for anyone....😍
Really nice list Scot ! But I’ve gotta look into some of those more obscure names that you mentioned. And a major shout out to Eloy’s Ocean. It’s just a mysterious beauty of an epic voyage. Plus I love the drumming on that album, which at times is very reminiscent to the Professor. And the final track is an unforgettable composition that I could lose myself in every time. Can’t say enough about that album.

Great concept for a video! And you really nailed it. Delineated and described 16 sub-categories of prog, and highlighted the proggiest album in each, all in just over 16 Minutes! Wow! Great job!. Although some of the selections were obvious for anyone familiar with the channel (Tales, Red, Museo Rosenbach, etc.), there were also some surprises in there, as well as just a great primer on the different categories.
Excellent video Scot. I am still a bit torn as to why we need so many "sub genres". Who came up with them, and why? Are we supposed to box up our music and assign one of these to them? I remember Court of the Crimson King had no "prog" label at the time of it's release. Ya, I think it's safe to say that I seek great music and don't much care about the labels. Oooh! Could spend hours discussing some of the concepts mentioned here but I will say that, in terms of progginess (and I am the sole arbiter in these matters. Sorry, Scot and Andy's Progometer. I don't need a machine. Now you know!

But yeah, I can understand you not ranking Force Majeure too high on the "Prog-o-meter". I'd consider the title track to be quite proggy but the rest of the album is pretty weak in that area.

Ah, thank you for mentioning National Health. I found them via Egg followed by Hatfield & The North. Dave Stewart (keyboards) and Mont Campbell (b gtr / vox) are superb.
Nice move including Amon Duul II's Yeti. It's a great example of how early Pink Floyd influenced German progressive rock music as a whole. If anyone has an interest in folk prog, then the two most progressive bands in this genre are definitely Comus and Dust Mountain. Both bands are closely related to King Crimson in terms of being dark, eerie, innovative and highly eclectic and original. Both bands can just as easily fit into Acid folk, or Pagan folk rock; Comus being acoustic, Dust Mountain electric and more rock slanted. Song to Comus and Hymns to Wilderness are albums worth checking out, especially if you're daring enough to pay Blair Witch Radio FM a visit. Scary stuff, disturbingly addictive!
If my own music that I have released ever gets put onto progarchives (and I really hope it does one day), I think Eclectic Prog would probably be the subgenre that describes my music the best. I draw from so many influences, from Santana to King Crimson to game soundtracks (among others), it’s hard for me to describe the kind of music I do.
Interesting idea for a video! Yeah, the ProgArchives genre system can be a little wonky sometimes, though I isially get why they have the categories they do, the boundaries are a bit fuzzy so putting every band in exactly one of them doesn't really work. (Probably my biggest annoyance in how they categorize it is the fairly common misconception that Triumph is a prog band, rather than a band that's mostly pretty hard rock/AOR standard with a few dips into proggier territory on specific songs, leading to a lot of negative reviews from people treating it like bad prog as opposed to reviewing it on its own terms. I dunno, just because they're a three piece band from Canada that started putting out albums shortly after Rush did doesn't mean their music is all that similar. Maybe to their first couple albums but not past that. Anyway, that's a bit of a tangent.) I'm not all that familiar with Indo-Raga, but if I had to guess based on the name, it sounds like it would be prog with a heavy influence from Indian classical music. By heavy, I mean that it would probably be mostly bands actually from India who are more familiar with the nuances of how that music works, rather than just throwing in a sitar playing something vaguely exotic and calling it a day. Which, not to get too much on a soapbox, but I feel like that it has an unnecessarily uphill battle to getting any widespread attention from other countries due to subconscious biases, but might be a lot more prevalent in India. Though honestly I'd he really curious as to how that would sound, actually... That said I've never heard it, so maybe I'll look into that at some point! As for the categories I'm more familiar with, you did a pretty good job picking those! While the whole post-rock category isn't really that "capital P Prog" as you say, Lift Your Skinny Fists is just a fantastic album. And kudos for mentioning The Road of Bones - that was the first IQ album I listened to, and it's still a favorite of mine. I have tried a few of their other albums, but mostly other later ones like Dark Matter, Frequency, and Resistance, and The Road of Bones is the one that I keep going back to. I should check out some of their older stuff too, sometime. Speaking of which, a random idea I had that could be interesting, would you be interested sometime in making videos (maybe shorts even?) in the vein of "if you've never heard this band before, here's what to expect and a few recommendations for where to start with them"? Because a band's most successful albums or songs, or ones any one person deems their best, may not always be the best introduction to their music, and you've made comments to that extent on occasion before. And with prog there are a lot of bands and specific substyles that just don't have much recognition outside of the specific genre, so that sort of resource could be very helpful to someone just trying to get into their music. I say a few recommendations mainly because there may be different albums or tracks that serve as better entry points to different people based on what they're already familiar with. I get it if that's a bit vague of an idea, or if you're not interested in taking video suggestions from random commenters, but it could be neat all the same.
@@TheProgCorner Awesome! Even as a prog fan, sometimes looking at a large discography that I'm entirely unfamiliar with can be daunting, like, say, Big Big Train or The Flower Kings. So I'd be curious to hear what you's have to say on those bands, and others you've praised a lot that I'm less familiar with!
In the extreme/avant garde metal subgenre I may highly recommend you to listen the incredible "Sol Niger Within", a 1997 album by Meshuggah's Fredrik Thordendal. I spoil a little bit: it's djent meets jazz fusion (Meshuggah meets Allan Holdsworth). Way beyond from its time.
Boom! Head explosion from sub- genre overload. Too much. Too much. Computer says NO! Actually, I have most of the albums you mentioned... I was listening to Kahn, Space... tonight. I have an original first edition vinyl album. Love a bit of Hillage...
Mastodon-Crack the Sky. Prog masterpiece. Also, Prog -punk? NOMEANSNO did a 15 minute version of Bitches Brew plus many of their albums are extremely technical! Amazing band!
You made some serious updates and modifications to Andy Edwards Prog-o- meter. But not really, he doesn't even consider Kansas. He says that they don't have enough of the "British Aesthetic". And he says it has to have that to truly be prog. Although he fudges his definition by including Zappa.
Great vid. Yes progarchives has waaaaaaaay too many sub genres. But it gives them something to do I guess We’re all a bit OC us prog heads… Gentle giant and Egg! RPI for the win though!!! ❤❤So much emotion and very symphonic.
Comus First Utterance for Folk Prog. Also, I don't know if you have ever listened to Richard Dawson's Peasant but it is modern canticle prog.. uh.. yeah, gonna stand by that invented genre. top drawer! Top drawer lists!!
Technically, there are only three sub-genres of prog: Awesome, Super-Awesome and Mega-Awesome, but I appreciate your discussion of these sixteen "varieties."
I agree with you regarding Prog-Metal, that the best album is OCTAVARIUM by Dream Theater. A curiosity: it is striking that several prestigious rock music critics, such as Pete Pardo, consider the title track (IMO a masterpiece and probably the band's best song) a weak song. Recently you have done a show in which the majority of six critcs consider it the best song of the group. Very interesting show, Scot!
Hi Scott. A few months ago I commented on your channel that "A Very Cellular Song" [1968] by the Incredible String Band was the first ever prog song. I would argue that the Incredible String Band is the number 1 Prog Folk band [Spyrogyra was certainly heavily influenced by the ISB] and their most prog album is either "The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter" or the double album "Wee Tam and the Big Huge", both released in 1968. Both are works of pure genius. Why are they prog albums? Length of songs, variety of instruments, strange song structures, esoteric lyrics. "May the long time sun shine upon you, all love surround you, and the pure light within you guide you all the way on."
@TheProgCorner I agree, best beatles album, and I'd probably choose my favorite Led Zeppelin but it didn't come out early enough for it to be proto prog imo
A prog folk album like nothing else: Hush (1971) by Extradition, from Australia. Up to AUD$4,000 has been paid for the original vinyl. Another folk prog album from Australia, Fool's Paradise (1975) by Madden and Harris.
Doing This as I watch this video: Zeuhl: Magma live 1975 or any other live album by Magma Progressive Electronica: Anna Själv Tredje-Tussilago Fanfara (not my favourite sub genre) Rock in opposition: Samla Mammas Manna-Måltid Kraut: Can-Tago Mago (virtually impossible since there is so much good stuff out there) Jazzrock/fusion: Frank Zappa-Hot Rats (as impossible) Prog metal: Dream Theater-Scenes from a memory Psych/space rock: Khan-Space Shanty Neo prog: Marillion-Misplaced Childhood Postrock/mathrock: Meshuggah-Obzen Canterbury: Soft Machine-Volume Two Heavy Prog: Rush-Hemispheres Crossover prog: The Dear Hunter-ACT II: THE MEANING OF, & ALL THINGS REGARDING MS. LEADING Ecletic Prog: Gentle Giant-Acquiring the Taste Italian Prog: Il Balletto Di Bronzo-YS Symphonic Prog: Genesis-Selling England By the Pound
I think another genre that's excluded from ProgArchives, but that might've been included here, is prog soul. In my opinion, it's at least as legit as crossover prog.
It is super prog to separate things into endless sub genres but Im with Fripp on his definition. He says he's a progressive musician not a prog musician. For me prog is just something that is used for marketing the work of progressive musicians. If its very prog Ill probably dig it but how I evaluate musicians is purely how progressive they are musically. One is genre, the other is an attitude towards music. Love Birds of Fire and yeah some slag Rush for being so tuneful but Moving Pictures is a special high watermark for musicianship and songwriting. Prog can have both if the right progressive musicians are involved.
Cyclone by TD is probably proggier than FM and maybe not as good but it's still pretty good and also very underrated because of the vocals (which some say ruined it).
Would think the first Mahavishnu Orchestra album "Inner Mounting Flame" would rank over Birds. I would pick Return to Forever's "Romantic Warrior" ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@TheProgCorner yeah you can't go wrong with those two. As always love the channel. Between you and SOT I need another 24hrs in the day to catch up with all the recommendations.
Everyone waa hoping Tangerine Dream would do an Album with Rutherford and Banks after We Can't Dance ! Remember Tangerine Dream held the record as the loudest band in the world by db count for a short while !
Good program! But I think too many subgenres compromised your ratings. On one hand, you're ranking albums that aren't prog. For example, "Birds of Fire". While fusion might be related to prog, it sounds different and has different roots. On the other hand, I think you missed albums comprised of serious prog. It's hard to get proggier than Gentle Giant, for instance, but no GG albums came up. Best, RS
@@TheProgCorner Yeah, so that makes me wonder, what drugs are the Progarchives on, and where can I get some? (Zeuhl? Fusion?) Of course, it would have been just as bad if King Crimson weren't mentioned. Great job, otherwise!
That was interesting. I’m not bothering with any lists. Frankly I find all these sub-genres rather overwhelming. I can understand why there are sub-genres. Does Supertramp sound like Magma? Umm..not so much. Yet they are both prog. The best I can do is throw up my arms and toss in the towel. All I know is, I know what I like. In the end that’s all that really matters.
The 'Very High' section of the prog-o-meter is still not high enough for 'Tales From Topographic Oceans'.

I'm not all that familiar with Indo-Raga, but if I had to guess based on the name, it sounds like it would be prog with a heavy influence from Indian classical music.
I was thinking about something quite similar for a series of episodes!!!!
I’m doing a BBT ranking next week!!! Here’s my recent Flower Kings episode:

Incredible music x
In the extreme/avant garde metal subgenre I may highly recommend you to listen the incredible "Sol Niger Within", a 1997 album by Meshuggah's Fredrik Thordendal. I spoil a little bit: it's djent meets jazz fusion (Meshuggah meets Allan Holdsworth). Way beyond from its time.
Anything related to Meshuggah must be interesting!!!
Nailed it again! Paul, Durham,UK
Thank you, Paul!!!!
Alan White, much missed drummer of yes , born just a few miles down the road in Ferryhill
Boom! Head explosion from sub- genre overload. Too much. Too much. Computer says NO!
Actually, I have most of the albums you mentioned...
I was listening to Kahn, Space... tonight. I have an original first edition vinyl album. Love a bit of Hillage...
Way too much!!!
For the 3 of you who need an explanation of the Prog-o-Meter™: ruclips.net/video/r5JXal2fgoo/видео.html
Got some old faves and some new to discover. Yay!!
That’s the idea!!!!
Mastodon-Crack the Sky. Prog masterpiece. Also, Prog -punk? NOMEANSNO did a 15 minute version of Bitches Brew plus many of their albums are extremely technical! Amazing band!
Very cool!!!
Jazz Fushion ❤❤❤THIS 🎶
❤️❤️❤️
Scot, Don Lax who played violin in Quella Vecchia Locanda has a youtube channel! I would love to see you interview him!
Oh!!! Does he? I will try to connect with him. I love QVL - as you well know!!!!
@@TheProgCorner Have you managed to connect with him?
Yeah, I reached out to him. I haven’t heard back yet…
You made some serious updates and modifications to Andy Edwards Prog-o- meter. But not really, he doesn't even consider Kansas. He says that they don't have enough of the "British Aesthetic". And he says it has to have that to truly be prog. Although he fudges his definition by including Zappa.
The entirety of the massive RPI canon disagrees with the esteemed Mr. Edwards!!!
Great vid. Yes progarchives has waaaaaaaay too many sub genres. But it gives them something to do I guess
We’re all a bit OC us prog heads…
Gentle giant and Egg!
RPI for the win though!!! ❤❤So much emotion and very symphonic.
Yes!!!
Sometimes it's good to have someone to sort things out!
That’s right!!! Life is confusing enough!!!
Asked before what constitutes prog Scot? So many grey areas! Some might say most has been since the late 60s? My definition is different to most.
I have no idea. But I know it when I hear it!!! I do like the idea of a big tent. Prog vs progressive music.
Excellent! 🔥🔥
Mark!!!!
Comus First Utterance for Folk Prog. Also, I don't know if you have ever listened to Richard Dawson's Peasant but it is modern canticle prog.. uh.. yeah, gonna stand by that invented genre. top drawer! Top drawer lists!!
I have heard of Richard Dawson. And Comus is brilliant.
Technically, there are only three sub-genres of prog: Awesome, Super-Awesome and Mega-Awesome, but I appreciate your discussion of these sixteen "varieties."
Nice!!!! I love it.
It is arguably their finest moment!!!
What a fantastic video have a wonderful day also do you play instruments ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
I do!!!! Occasionally I’ll bust out a guitar or ukulele or play a little keyboard…
About indo-prog: Maybe you would enjoy Shakti with John McLaughlin!
Good call. I have heard that!!!!
I thought for you Scot Tales would have broke the Prog-O-Meter
It almost did!!!!!
Lol❗️❗️❗️👍😎

Oh! I don’t know either!!!!
I would think they would have a genre for New Wave Prog.
The album "Reach the Beach" by The Fixx is a prime example.
👍👍👍
That’s a strong argument!!!
Love ISB ! The Bridge Song ,This Moment , Darling Belle and Cellular Song
Excellent!
Excellent Prog-nosis
Very good!!!! Thank you!!!!
👏👏👏 HELLO my PROG Rock Professor Scot ♥️🎸🎶🎶
Hello, Lisa!!!
I think it wouldve been pretty cool to hear what you think the "proggiest" proto prog album was. Even if its not really prog
I would be tempted to go with Sgt Peppers
@TheProgCorner I agree, best beatles album, and I'd probably choose my favorite Led Zeppelin but it didn't come out early enough for it to be proto prog imo
Love me some Topographic Oceans 🤘🤘🤘
Absolutely!!!!
bravo sir! bravo i say!
Thank you!!!!!
Proggy Prog Prog, Scot gets it sorted.
That’s right!!!
Do you label Ihsahn as Symphonic Avant-Metal like I do or Symphonic Prog-Metal? Just wondering?
A good question!!!
A prog folk album like nothing else: Hush (1971) by Extradition, from Australia. Up to AUD$4,000 has been paid for the original vinyl. Another folk prog album from Australia, Fool's Paradise (1975) by Madden and Harris.
Wow!!! That’s a lot of money!!! 🇦🇺
@@TheProgCorner Crazy. Even reissues go for $300. Silly prices for non collectors.
Doing This as I watch this video:
Zeuhl: Magma live 1975 or any other live album by Magma
Progressive Electronica: Anna Själv Tredje-Tussilago Fanfara (not my favourite sub genre)
Rock in opposition: Samla Mammas Manna-Måltid
Kraut: Can-Tago Mago (virtually impossible since there is so much good stuff out there)
Jazzrock/fusion: Frank Zappa-Hot Rats (as impossible)
Prog metal: Dream Theater-Scenes from a memory
Psych/space rock: Khan-Space Shanty
Neo prog: Marillion-Misplaced Childhood
Postrock/mathrock: Meshuggah-Obzen
Canterbury: Soft Machine-Volume Two
Heavy Prog: Rush-Hemispheres
Crossover prog: The Dear Hunter-ACT II: THE MEANING OF, & ALL THINGS REGARDING MS. LEADING
Ecletic Prog: Gentle Giant-Acquiring the Taste
Italian Prog: Il Balletto Di Bronzo-YS
Symphonic Prog: Genesis-Selling England By the Pound
Outstanding!!!!
@@TheProgCorner thanks man. Great and nerdy way to list favourite bands!
Sandoz in the Rain.
No Progressive Pop category. Bloody well right I'm on strike! Free Jeff Wayne!
Progarchives need an overhaul methinks…
I think another genre that's excluded from ProgArchives, but that might've been included here, is prog soul. In my opinion, it's at least as legit as crossover prog.
Good call. Stevie Wonder was Prog in the seventies!!!
Would you consider Cardiacs next time
I’m planning on doing a Cardiacs episode soon!!!
Prog is more an attitude than a genre!!!
Cyclone by TD is probably proggier than FM and maybe not as good but it's still pretty good and also very underrated because of the vocals (which some say ruined it).
I love Cyclone!!! That whole period - the Virgin years…amazing.
Hey Scot help sometimes I accidentally fall asleep while listening to epics😢(I’m always tired)
Some epics can be a grind but I am putting together the ultimate list of Prog Epics for Sunday’s live show!!!
IQ Road of Bones is an excellent choice
Love it!!!
How come sleepy hollow legend usbt on this list? It's git everything prog you xan think if
Super Prog!!!
Prog adjacent Nick Cave just announced a new Bad Seeds album. Great day!!!
Love Nick Cave.
I always believe theres 2 genres of all music, good and bad. That said I still regard Black Sabbaths debut as prog same as some Parliament.
Absolutely!!! And Stevie Wonder too.
Would think the first Mahavishnu Orchestra album "Inner Mounting Flame" would rank over Birds. I would pick Return to Forever's "Romantic Warrior" ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Hey, I love the first two Mahavishnu Orchestra albums almost equally. That original lineup blows my mind!!!!
@@TheProgCorner yeah you can't go wrong with those two. As always love the channel. Between you and SOT I need another 24hrs in the day to catch up with all the recommendations.
I’ll be back on SOT over the weekend!!!
@@TheProgCorner 🚨🚨🚨 📢📢📢BREAKING NEWS!!! 🎸🎸🎹🥁🎼🎵🎶🎵🎶🎶
I’d include Barren Dream by Mr. Sirius
Mr Sirius!!!! Awesome.
Prog Folk, no Jethro Tull? Thick as a Brick? A Passion Play? I weep 😢
I love those two albums but they don’t sound very folky to me. Songs From The Wood perhaps…
@@TheProgCornerI dont care just squeeze them in somewhere! lol
HELLO I DO NOT UNDERSTAND THE SUB GENRE ITS OBSCURE MY FAVORITE IS SYMPHONIC
It’s a bit silly, isn’t it?
Everyone waa hoping Tangerine Dream would do an Album with Rutherford and Banks after We Can't Dance ! Remember Tangerine Dream held the record as the loudest band in the world by db count for a short while !
Nice!!!! I thought that record went to Ted Nugent…
@@TheProgCorner The UK Croydon Tangerine Dream show 76 had the technicians turning everthing up to 9.4 !
Prog Folk (Kalandra)👌
There you go!!!!!! 👍👍❤️❤️
@@TheProgCorner Yup. They are going on tour with Heilung this year.👌
Good program!
Best, RS
Hey, I didn’t come up with these!!!! Blame Progarchives!!! And yeah, Gentle Giant vs King Crimson in the “eclectic” category was tough!!!!
@@TheProgCorner Yeah, so that makes me wonder, what drugs are the Progarchives on, and where can I get some? (Zeuhl? Fusion?) Of course, it would have been just as bad if King Crimson weren't mentioned. Great job, otherwise!
@@TheProgCorner Museo Rosenbach is darn good! "Crime of the Century" is definitely a 'must have' no matter what you call it!
Amon Düül ll. Love love love them.
Man, I am becoming obsessed with…
@@TheProgCorner I know man. I’ve been playing the Cramps for days on end. 🤷🏻♂️
But the band I’m listening to right now is…
ARABS IN ASPIC!!!!
@@TheProgCorner Will Check em out.
That was interesting. I’m not bothering with any lists.
Frankly I find all these sub-genres rather overwhelming.
I can understand why there are sub-genres. Does
Supertramp sound like Magma? Umm..not so much.
Yet they are both prog. The best I can do is throw up my
arms and toss in the towel. All I know is, I know what I like.
In the end that’s all that really matters.
That’s the best way to deal with it!!!!
@@TheProgCorner 🤷♂️
Kraut Rock, Amon Düül is a great choice. Me, personally, I would have prefered "Kraan".
Oh!!! Nice!!!!
@@TheProgCorner My recommendation: ruclips.net/video/4yB6SLzIAC8/видео.html Interesting Line up: Saxophone, Drums, Guitar, Bass.
Would have thought "Songs From The Wood" would be the proggiest Folk rock prog album of all time. No?
Yeah, but I talk about JT all the time so I thought I’d mix it up!!!
