Starting a Farm from Scratch with JD 4020

- This Spring I bought 50 acres of farmland in Central Iowa. The goal is to bring it back to full production and bring as much value add as I can for future appreciation and better cash flow. This was a super fun project that my parents, brother, and buch helped with. In all, it took roughly two weeks from start to finish with anhydrous. After this, we got 5 inches of rain and had some issues with old tile being clogged with tree roots further delaying planting.
We put 45 hours on the 4020 40 on the excavator and 30 on the skid loader. Possibly plans in the future is to add a large culvert to the creek crossing to get larger equipment through. Also finishing clearing another 2-3 acres that have been overgrown. Once we get some yield data back we can see if putting in new tile lines would be beneficial.

I thought this was Farming Simulator 2022 because of the thumbnail, but when I realized it's real life, I become even more interested, keep up the good work!
Same lol, especially because i was playing fs22 when i clicked on it lol

Looking at the river/creek from above you may want to look into re-wilding the banks of it with native plants that like that environment in order to slow down erosion and help prevent flooding. Also during droughts it'll help retain moisture in that area. So an all round win win for you and nature.
Yup take down the trees and plant wild grasses and flowers. Pollinators are great for a farm. Heck get you a bee keeper to rent a spot for a new hive. You get pollinators and he gets honey.
nah just flatten it all, burn it then fill it with more phosphorus, that'll fix it
@@skylinevspec000 that's actually a great idea if he had the money for a massive amount of drain tile. I know you were trying to joke but that's actually the perfect solution.
The amount of erosion that's going to take place on this farm will be absolutely tremendous. He'll be losing top soil by doing all this he's doing. Which will be an overall net loss.
@@verteup He left grassy waterways, and the only part he tilled was the former CRP patches. He needed to till that to break through the roots, after this year I imagine he will be able to no-till plant most, if not all of his ground. That combined with cover crop in the winter, and good management of that creek, is about the best modern farming can do to prevent topsoil loss.
It’s awesome seeing someone your age jumping out and buying your own land and starting your own farm. Congratulations and God bless you
I'm happy to see an American get it instead of Va China.
It’s nice to see you and your brother chasing your dreams. Keep up the hard work man.
Appreciate it
When you bought that excavator I thought man what a waste, just rent one. Pretty sure it paid itself off already and appears you had a plan all along.
Yeah I plan on doing some custom jobs with it too here soon. Thought was to get experienced running it on our own projects then take on paid work. Put about 250 hours on it after a year of owning it.
@@spencerhilbert it shows with how fluid you are running it.
@@tcanthony2 thanks! This project improved me by far the most. 25 hrs of grubbing then picking up sticks is good practice!
Spencer speaking from John Deere experience change the antifreeze coolant soon. I had pin holes on my liners that was caused by electrolysis and old antifreeze.
@@Military-Museum-LP people don’t realize how often that happens some engines are worse than others they make attives you pour in your rad every couple years I know Cummins and John Deere are really bad for it is the way the engine heats and the way the water flows and on Cummins on the older big trucks it had a lot to do with poor ground and location I know what I said didn’t make sense to me either till I started studying on it I’m all about saving myself big money especially when I can spend a few dollars on a little bottle of additives instead of building a engine because I’ve been where you were on your engine but I’ve seen it a lot but I thought just running good antifreeze was good enough but I was wrong I hope this helps i know it a little to late it cost you a motor but now you know in the future
I once hired out to a friend of mine. He has this huge vegetable farm, mostly sweet corn, but also pumpkins, strawberries, peaches, and so forth. My job was to do all of the cultivating, spraying, and anything else that needed a driver. His main cultivator was 4020 with 4-row cultivation. Man, I must've spent at least three hundred hours on that 4020! Nostalgia--some great stuff happened that spring/summer/fall. Thanks for the memories!🚜
I’m happy to have discovered that you have your own channel. I’ve been watching you and your brother on his channel since he bought his first farm. I’m old enough to be your dad and I’m very impressed with both of you. People say many negative things about young people today but here you guys are proving them wrong. Good for you and good luck with your crops! I’m subscribing
Appreciate the comment!
I never realized how hard it was to get a plot of land ready to plant when it had been allowed to get over grown nice job enjoying your channel
I don't know much about farming but its crazy what one man and an excavator can do in a single day. Cool stuff.
I am a bit older than you and your brother but I like seeing how you two young farmers start out. The odds are against you with land, equipment, seed and fertilizer costs but I admire your tenacity on doing this. This is coming from a husker to a hawkeye.
Most likely will make more on RUclips so he’s fine

A 4020 is a rock solid purchase to get started with. They are battle proven.
Im from kenya and have never seen anything like this, the machinery is so advanced .big land big machines small personel this is actually a dream job
Most of the machines shown are old and small
Good choice on the tractor; the 4020 is John Deere's most popular tractor of all time. Watch out for the transmission, though; we used a 4010 and I don't think all the gears EVER worked, even after two rebuilds.
Great to see a young guy starting out.
A tip from a pro, if you need to burn more timber in the future. Pour the diesel on a few days before, to allow it to soak into the wood. Most importantly, start a small fire, not one big one. Start a small fire, get it cranking, add the rest of the wood to it as it burns..much quicker than lighting one big pile.
Thanks for the tip! Will for sure do that in future.
We cleared an old CRP farm like that once. Thats a lot of work but it's pretty rewarding when the job is done
So encouraging to see young people willing and able to buy ground and good equipment and start a farm especially in the day and age of mega farms and BIG government! Good luck on your crop.
Unfortunately a lot of these small Iowa farms are now leased to big companies like Pioneer/Corteva for them to grow seed on their land. But I guess you have to pay bills somehow
I can't begin to express how refreshing this channel is to watch. Here's a kid who has a vision, plans his approach and then executes. I've worked alongside so called educated "experts" and watched them fail at smaller challenges. Keep doing you Spencer the experts have got nothing on you
Thanks!
I would have left that large tree in field, it gives character to field and is good for local ecosystem. It does make field a bit harder to work with, but I think its worth it.
On the side note, here in Europe, we would probably get all tree branches and smaller tree chipped up and get paid for that wood, even when calling crew to do it.
Honestly I thought you did amazing for you first time. I would love more content from the mechanic side when things go wrong. I was so ready to comment about raising your RPM’s at the beginning but when you switched to 1500 I was impressed and happy for you. Great work!
Noted!
It’s awesome to see you branch out on your own farming adventure! I’m a young guy (about your age) who does farming and excavating here in Michigan. Eventually, I want to get an excavator of my own and turn less than desirable farmland into productive land.
Yeah seems like there is a opportunity there.
4020 is one of the best simplest yet powerful tractors out there.
An excavator sure is a handy piece of equipment. If you happen to have one. I suspect your wheel bearing problem is probably due more to age and lack of regular greasing than to the log /weight on your disc. But, I don't really know for sure. I was thinking the log was a good idea until that happened.
As someone that has sat out and done that with a 4020 I can say it is better than any therapy you can dream of.
I grew up driving a 4020...best tractor ever made!
Guys like you are inspiring me to start a small farm! Keep up the good work!
such a good old tractor, farmed on one when i was a kid
Hi Spencer, I’ve been watching your videos since 2018 and just wanted to congratulate you on this amazing life achievement 🎉🎉.Stay safe and God bless America
Who says God bless America its God bless england
@@TheDucko Sept 3, 1783 God blessed America. England went back home tails between their legs in their little red coats. The most powerful military the world did see in 1775. Beat by farmers, blacksmiths, cobblers, and saloon keepers.

So proud to see a young man like you taking the initiative to build something for yourself and be willing to put in the time and effort doing so. Be proud and know you are continuing the way of life that built and continues to feed this great country. Having a plan, preparing for it, and executing with purpose and resolve is something not being shown from the young people today. Best regards and wishing prosperity and success in your endeavors! Watching you on that 4020 reminds me of myself growing up and working a 65 4020 power shift. Makes one appreciate the comforts of new equipment with cabs! Your parents should be proud, as I'm sure they are!
Thank you. The gentleman I bought it from had purchased it has his first tractor back in early 80’s. Pretty cool that it was his first tractor he started on and now 40 years later I am starting with it. Appreciate the comment!
It's very impressive with the modern machines that have helped people create plots of land into high-yield planting gardens
Oh, that dirt looks lovely. Im sure it has so much packed nutrients in it since it’s been in CRP for so long. This is gonna be interesting to see your crop. I definitely think you’re going to have to widen that approach. You and your brother are only going to get bigger equipment with time. Good luck.
Those 4020’s built Americas farming industry
This is awesome to see someone reclaiming land for the use of farming looking forward to other videos
That is some nice dirt. You can tell how the soil shakes off of the tree roots. Happy farming it!
Hey there Spencer, you are living my dream life I can’t wait to see what happens to this farm and where this channel goes with it I love watching your other channel and maybe one day I’ll be able to do this. Thanks man.
Slightly surprised that your neighbors didn't take more trees. And looks like you and rental man buck are a potent combination for getting stuff done. Love the improvised disc weight. Thanks for posting your progress videos
He got all the small ones that would have a high chance of surviving transplant.
After wacthing farm sim 22 videos, I've been looking for the real life farming videos. It was hard for me, until I found your channel. Awesome work! ❤
Plenty of farmers in Iowa if you ever want to see it in real life whether you want to see pigs or corn we have both haha

thanks for the hard work
I spent a lot of time on a 4020 when o was younger. Some friendly advice. Wear hearing protection. Congrats on your farm.
Thanks, will do!
This is surprisingly interesting! I've seen a fair share of farming, but barely any brush to farmland videos. Will follow along!
Little fires with a leaf blower if you want it out just out front and blow it back into the black just a tip we use all the time
Land looked like it turned out good. Cool to see you and Grant succeeding in your dreams
Not me, thinking this was a Farming sim 22 mod for ultra realism before realizing its the ACTUAL process in real life. *Happiness Intensifies*
Glad to see you have your own channel. Excited to see your progress. Take it easy
One thing in hind sight. My dad had down sized the farm till he was doing 52 acres tillable. We worked that 4020 till the engine block cracked.
By real careful how much load you put on that model. If its running with the original 88hp or has been repowered it will make a big difference on how far you can push it.
I can tell you a lot of things are going to go your way into the next few years based on economic factors.
I agree with a lot of other commenters, plant water seeking trees along the creek. Plant berry vines like raspberries that like water. Plant a lot of perennial wild flowers to attract pollinators.
Living in Kentucky, our climate is similar.
My son built a tree puller/post puller for his skid steer. It pulls up to 4" diameter trees which is more efficient than using a track hoe for the small stuff. He did tie into one tree that he could not pull. It tipped the skid steer forward and him out of the seat which disabled the hydraulics. He had to wedge himself around in the cab to put weight on the seat to let the skid steer down. He disabled that "safety" switch shortly after.
Spence, good to see you are trying to reclaim some farm ground and follow Grant in farming. My suggestion is mold board plow that ground to actually break up all the roots and then hit it with some aggressive disking with an abundance of at least pot ash.
Love the video and the Ole 4020 put in the work!!
Have you considered deep ripping in the future? In Missouri you could till and plow but the fields never did well untill they were ripped. Many would do it every 5 to 7 years. Would he interesting to see a small comparison of a few acres ripped. Anyway your living the dream my friend. Good luck.
I love your weights on the disk
I have to say, this was the most engaging video I've watched about farming! Keep it up spencer, you're doing great!
Appreciate it! 👍
I want to say I joy watching your video and Grant too 👍👍
Like to see new farms started up 👍
Wishing you saved some trees for wind break. Good to young men press forward. Enjoyed video
Awesome! We bought a crap load of acres about two years ago, and we are just about done cleaning the land from dead trees and such. I'm getting a new clutch put into my tractor, so I'll start cultivating next week! I'll probably start with chufa seed, crimson red clover, corn, and potatoes.
BTW, build a fence around your crops too, because a neighbor of mine got his crops completely destroyed by wild animals WHILE he was at church lol
I couldn't imagine doing this kind of work without that excavator. I had an old timer tell me he cleared land with his dad with only a tractor like yours and dynamite for the stumps.
Yeah that would be a lot of work. It was about 6 full working days to get everything cleared and every small stick and rock picked up. Even with just the skid steer it would have been tough.
Great job reclaiming the farm land
Awesome stuff. We’ve taken out a lot of trees an offset disk and chisel plow work really well at popping those roots up.
Man this is something I dream of. The office rat race is killing me.
Yeah, definitely change that will bearing or two in your lifetime. Well done. I enjoy the contact. There’s a lot of farm in channels not a lot from scratch. I find it interesting thanks for the contact, sir.
Good job a new farmer watching in canada
Cool video, watching that burning pile of trees was great. Thanks for posting.
Looking good Spencer
Never going to see a man happier than buch on a 4020
Really love the channel can’t wait for more. PLEASE KEEP FILMING. Thank you much. Start a Patron would like to donate some to you. Thnks for the hard work and hours of editing. Waiting for next video. Subbed for sure. ❤
Molboard plow that farm it’ll break up all big roots and then do some dialing and your be done great work
Nice work gentleman.
For the tiny saplings, I’d run a bushhog over to chop them up, and then for the small roots leftover, I’d run a set of rippers over it. That way when you disc it’ll get chopped up and sit at the surface to dried and get brittle.
Spent most of my childhood on a 4020 and a 3020. Best and most reliable tractors we had
Great work
Your Neighbour who took the trees to replant is the only smart guy in this video!
Being from thr south its crazy to see a field left fallow so long only has that few trees in it. Also when you pluck those trees out and just shake them almost all the dirt falls off!! Here you would rip it up and have to beat the clay out of the roots and drop the trees and still end up with lots of dirt hanging on.
Yeah good loose spring soil. In winter it would be a different story as well.
Awesome job Spencer, the field looks great!
Hi from Florida farmer that’s awesome I’m glad you enjoyed.
Well i just discovered this channel and i think its pretty interesting. Keep up with the good work
Pulled some weeds from my garden earlier and shook the dirt from them like you did those cedar bushes. Good luck on your new venture.
Love u brother lots of respect brother
Bro, Everybody know the first steps should be as follows->cut a few trees-> sell them-> buy a mover-> cut grass-> sell grass-> speed up time-> cut grass again-> rinse and repeat
JK. Amazing video. Wish you the best
PS: I know it's not the perfect start (there is non), don't start argue about it please :D
Good work!
Real nice you young people are working dudes!
great video, hope everything works out for you and you have a really good crop this year, we really enjoyed your video and good luck to you
Plase look into tree lines between ur fields as a wind stop to stop erosion by wind
Looking forward to this series! Watching all the way from South Africa
Nice to see you started with a good tractor, the 4020 in my opinion was one of the best deere ever made,, big enough to do everything yet not to big for the smaller jobs,,, while was only rated 80 some horsepower have seen them being used to pull 6 bottom plows, tho normally see with 5 bottoms
Agree. Will always be handy and easy to haul with pickup and bumper pull trailer.
If your looking for a heavier disk just know that the 23 foot krause disks about 30 years old are very very heavy ours sinks perfectly and still dose a decent job with smoothing.
Yeah I almost bought one of those. It sold before I could take a look. They look very heavy duty and would have worked good.
Farm simulator graphics have gotten so much better
This really inspires me
The new Farming sim graphics looks so realistic
You can also grow prairie plants and grasses to raise livestock instead of feeding cattle grain. Holistic livestock management can also help build soil and increase crop yield. Pollinator meadows can also be scaled allowing for beneficial insects for pollination.
Agroforestry is another revolutionary farming practice I’d recommend taking a look at.
Hope your able to be inspired. I know it inspired me.
I would also be weary of chopping down all the trees near the creek because they absorb leach and runoff from the fields. The trees act as a buffer zone for the water and protect from erosion. The trees also help keep the water clean by purifying it.
Well, that is cool. A lot of nice things going on. Happy to see the progress.
love how you put so much time into these videos keep grinding!
We are in drought conditions here south of you Missouri tri-state area. Hopefully pray for a rain tonight tomorrow otherwise it will get ugly with crops and pastures etc.
You’re doing good but you know that.
Farming Simulator 2023 looking good!
I like the long format video. Best wishes farming!
4020 and 3 bottom plow would have worked very well.
This plot would be a great candidate to experiment with some no-till farming!
Nice work man looking forward to following your progress.
In the future I’d recommend using Emory cloth to shiny up those spindles so your bearings slide on easier and seat better.
