      My 1970 shadow gray Monte came with rallies, 400 small block and 12 bolt rear end dif. I didnt need an SS to hot rod it. I pumped it to a 406, with 450 horses, rebuilt and beefed up suspension, lowered it one inch and installed a turbo 400 street/strip with 373 gears. It is 100% immaculate and with the rallies and BF Goodies is one head turner.

    My dad had a gold w/ black top & interior SS 454 like this (his daily work car) it was the first car I drove when i got My licence in 1976 it was a great car, in late summer 1978 I totaled it when the Rt front tire let go on a long sweeping left hand curve in the country @ about 75 to 80. Lucky My friend and I were unhurt, I was real lucky because that night We had not drank at all. I always wanted to get another one because they really are a great driving car.

MY 71 Monte broke one of the nuts on that weird upper control arm shim set-up one and threw it out of whack and another time my 70 SS sheared all the Lugnuts off and dropped the front end on the ground in a parking lot! The SS was totaled by a drunk lady with no insurance in an OLDS 442 soon after I engine swapped it and converted to HEI ignition in high school shop class

    I had an opportunity to buy one of these from an online auto auction in a rural community outside of the twin cities area. It was not an ss but was white with with hard top. Mint body and only 63k miles on it. This was around 2010 and I had no idea how nice this car was at the time but I wish I owned it today. I missed the end of the auction because of a work conflict but it sold for under $1300 bucks.

    A 1969 GP was available with a 390hp 428ci and a 4 speed. 1970 was available with a 370hp 455, even a Hurst SSJ was available. The Monte Carlo SS had no LS6 option, only a 360hp LS5 454 of which almost none were made. Both are cars I wouldn't mind having, I would just rather have the GP more because even the lower priced cars got a 400 Pontiac with 350hp vs the low priced Monte which was a 250hp 350sbc.

      Chevrolet sold more SS Montes than "almost none". 3823 Monte SS454s were built for 70, and the LS5 was rated 360 hp at 4400 rpm, but the exact same engine, cam and all, was rated 390 hp at 4800 rpm in the Corvettes.

  • @bmt336
    @bmt336 4 года назад +2

    The Thunderbird was in a complete class higher than the MC. 1970 Thunderbird prices started at 5000. As well the Thunderbird 429 was also rated at 360 horses and came with 4 bbl and full dual exhaust as standard. The MC was standard with a 307 or 350 and 2 bbl. The fact was that the GP also had 350 horses standard and a 370 horse 455 was optional. The MC was a great car and in the personal luxury category which was about to really explode in the 70s and early 80s.

      Pete shea - The base engine for the 1970 Monte was a 350 2bbl. That’s why there were two 350’s offered. There were also two 400’s offered, although the 2bbl version was a small block. The 4bbl one was actually a 402 big block, which is what I have in my 1970....

    • @bmt336
      @bmt336 4 года назад

      @Pete shea I suggest you read what I wrote again and see that it is largely complementary to the MC so relax. So the MC had a 4 bbl 350 as a standard. The fact is the Thunderbird was an entire class above the MC and had one engine that was very well suited for it's mission of personal luxury, NOT 1/4 mile runs. Effortless highway travel all day and arriving relaxed. The MC was on a stretched Malibu frame, the Thunderbird and Mark III were on their own. Its apples and oranges.

      @@THRASHMETALFUNRIFFS The information about the '70 Monte Carlo SS454 having a 2.73:1 rear gear is not correct. I've seen that posted many times, but the SS for 1970 actually came with a 2.56 ratio standard, with the option of getting a 3.31 ratio. The standard ratio for non-SS454 Montes in '70 was 2.73. For 1971, the 3.31 became the standard ratio for the SS. The car in this video belongs to a friend of mine, Jim Schneider, and it has the 2.56 ratio. I also have a '70 Monte SS454, and it also came with a 2.56. I've restored my car and I pulled the 2.56 posi and put a 3.55 in it last summer. Until then, it ran 105 mph in 2nd gear at 5500 rpm. I never tested to see what it would run at 5500 rpm in 3rd. I'm sure it would have been around 140. As you know, the Monte Carlo was not intended to compete at the drag strip with anyone.

      @@danjanes8689 Wow, that is pretty cool you actually know the guy! Mine was in great shape for paint/body and green interior with the buckets and console and gripper shifter thing. The 454 was gone with a 350 4 barrel in it's place. Both my 70 and 71 would do burnouts just fine and we clocked a mile at 140 in the 71 once. Judging by this chart it seems like the SS was damn close to similar cars like the 396 SS Chevelle and Mach 1 Mustang so I'm not sure what he was on about. He probably had a 73 Swinger Duster that "run's 11's and pulls the tires off the ground and blown the tires off at 60, bone stock". I had to pay huge money for a custom built 500hp 383 stroker in my 83 Firebird with 4:10 gears and it still only ran a 13.54 at 104, it would sit about 5000 rpm at 65 when I blew the 700R4 overdrive and put in a TH350 with stall converter and shift kit in the valvebody. My friends 440hp 69 Charger was running in the 18's with tall gears I believe. Really you couldn't got no real power in a Grand Prix how about the 455 ho 370 horsepower of 500 foot pounds of torque, the top engine in a Monte Carlo was the LS- 5 360 HP horsepower 👎

    The 69 428 Ho 390hp Grand Prix would destroy that monte, I’ve owned both cars and the Grand Prix was by far the better looking, better performing and better built car out of the 2 and even in 1970 the Grand Prix came out with the 455HO that also had 390hp and over 500ft pounds of torque, the monte is a wannabe Grand Prix

      Haters gotta hate. The LS5 360 hp rating was at 4400 rpm for '70, but the exact same engine was rated at 390 hp at 4800 rpm in the '70 Corvette. Some say they used a different cam in the 'vetted, but the specs show the same cam part number for both. Chevrolet and others played with the advertised ratings for marketing purposes.

      @@danjanes8689the Corvette then as in most cases at least until the LS1/LS6 in 2004 had the best flowing factory exhaust, often a bit more compression, a bit more timing and better carb jetting because the lighter car was less likely to knock and was their performance leader. The average Monte had a 350sbc with 250hp, the average GP had a 350hp Pontiac 400.

      Correct it shared a lot of the same structure. Common in many cars, like a PT Cruiser=Neon or a Mustang was a Falcon, Demon=Dart=Duster, Chevelle=Ventura=Omega

      Not exactly. They shared alot of the same parts, but the wheelbase on the Monte is longer, resulting in better handling and ride. The first gen, as well as the later Montes, enjoyed great success in NASCAR because of their longer wheelbase.

    0-60 mph. in 7.7 seconds? Hell, my 2010 Ford Taurus can do better than that (0-60 in 7.1 seconds). Mine also has two less cylinders to feed and gets 29 miles per gallon on the highway! Eat my dust you old relic!
