  • Stop lifting your egos.
I don't believe in "believing in yourself" because of how inhumane people really can be. I never believe in myself - my full faith is in God, and that's where my trust is, and that's where it remains. He's never betrayed me, and never will.

I've been lifting for like a year and a half now, made some great progress, gained like 55 pounds, everyone noticing the changes i made to my body and so on.. But whenever i get asked for lifting advices, i usually tell them lifting sucks, because let's face it, it's not really something everyone is willing to do. It's just pushing barbells, dumbells, not much fun. I sincirely think it's useless, but it has become a part of my life, and i'm used planning my day with gym time in it, and eating like 6 times a day and so on.. Also, i give advices but in the end of the day, it doesnt really matter if you can bench 260 or do 30 pull ups or 100 push ups, it's about who you are, not who you want yourself to be. I started going to the gym for the wrong reason, i was 120 pounds at 6'2 and couldn't get a girlfriend. Now I'm at 170 and still cant get one. All that matters is what kind of a person you are, not how you look on the outside.

Good video, man. Even though I can do a bunch of pushups and pull-ups, and I look pretty good, my faith that it will make me a more confident person has failed me. I should put my faith not in myself, but in a constant god who I can rely on forever. Thank you for this video so much! I needed this.

I appreciate what you do for others and I appreciate how you share your faith. I'm a Christian as well. But I don't see it as wrong to want to get bigger muscles, to lose body fat, to look leaner. Because all that leads to a much healthier lifestyle. It builds confidence in the person - achieving their goal.
I'll relate it to going to church. Many people come to church the first time to make friends and socialize with others. What they discover is that there's a lot more to it - Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Some people start off working out with the wrong intentions however it can still lead to positive growth and development for that person

Guys you have to keep in mind that although he is a very intelligent and grown up person for his age he is essentially still a kid, and he keeps growing and maturing.
His opinions and views will change, he will deem some of his actions "childish" and "funny" as he says, as years go by, but that's something we all go through, and will be going through for the rest of our lives.
He is trying to help people and make this world a better place as best as he can, and that's enough for me.
Also, Fortress thanks for helping me get started with my workout plan. Your's and Elliott Hulses videos were all I needed. I have serious back problems and headaches because of my work, but just after a couple of months my headaches have become much rarer and milder, and my back is also going for the better.

I'm working out to get more confident about myself.
Back in the days, when my parents got divorce (i was 8), i was very shy and not confident about myself. Maybe it's because i was ashamed that my parents are divorced, i don't know.. I was so shy, that i wear a hat all day long, so when someone tells me something i would cover my eyes with it. Then, i found that working out helps me be confident about myself in anything in life. I started to talk in class, to talk to girls (witch i was totally afraid to..) and to express my opinion on everything i wanted. Since i started working out, my life got much better, and now i'm totally confident, i don't have this thing that blocks me anymore.
Now, after almost 4 years of training (both bodyweight workouts and weight lifting workouts), i can say that i've never been the person i'm today, unless i worked out.
Working out changed my life for good, and i keep working out now just for healthy life.
By the way, my main language isn't English.. so sorry if there are some spelling mistakes :P

You sound extremely self righteous. Stop that. It's a gross trait... Some insecure people need an ego boost. Or they work out to make their girl friend happy. Or their boyfriend happy. Or so that they will be fit enough to even get someone in the first place. Or so that they can gain the confidence to live a happier life. Whatever the reason is, that is their reason and you shouldn't judge them from your high horse. I'm an atheist. But I know you are a Christian. Only god can judge, bro. You are not god. People will do what people will do and they have their reasons for it.

    • @blackhole4568
      @blackhole4568 10 лет назад +8

he wasn't trying to be god. he was trying to get a point across that you shouldn't lift just to be confident. and if they really needed a confidence boost why go to a place filled with buff guys to do it? and if they were trying to make their girlfriend happy that is a different story. i respect your opinion but i dont think it is entirely correct. i dont necessarily agree with him either.

    • @naswalt
      @naswalt 10 лет назад

eh, from what I got from this, I did see a bit of a self righteous attitude come across, yeah. But I think the overall message that he was at least trying to get at was more of a "Who are you working for?" one. Which for Christians, even if its diluted by some judgement and self righteousness (which every body has to a degree) because the idea for hard work is that it should be for God, and henceforth love by default. And with physical fitness, it really just comes down to either what line of work and servitude you want towards God, or how long you want to live serving him based on your body's health.
And just a quick little two-cents comment on the girlfriend/boyfriend statement you made; like, I don't want it to come across that I'm just saying that you're flat-out wrong, but I think that the effort to look good externally can be a big issue for relationships, cause it feeds into a little bit more of just a physical attraction field instead of a personality compatibility one. I guess I wanted to just throw that one in as advice or a warning or whatever.
ANYWHO, on a final note, you are 100% entitled to your opinion, I just saw something up for debate. sorry for the essay.

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” Just thought this applied here

I understand the whole point of the video, always love what your doing.
But the reason why people want to feel big is because it's an animalistic trait that all humans have, we get big to attract women to fight off males, it's encoded in our DNA.
At the end of the day if it makes people feel better whats wrong in that, I believe and as you stated you did the same when you were younger, it's something you ask yourself when you mature as you get older, why I work out, whats the reason, it because you learn to understand that all the stuff on the outside means nothing if your not healthy and everyone around you is the same.
    Love life.

I feel that it's okay to ego-lift if it's under control. I started lifting in a tough time in my life. When time passed and I met my goal I stopped ego-lifting, but I think lifting is a good way to boost small egos in particular. Besides all that I completely agree. People at my school who are a little bigger than the average person, have already began to get super cocky just because they have muscles. Because I always had the thought to never become one of those people when I got big in the back of my mind, I didn't, and yet I'm way bigger than those people. On another note thanks for the videos, and God bless.

My goal is to be a man better able to care for my disabled wife. To serve her with every ounce of energy I can muster. Also to be a great example to my four kids and 12 grand kids that I can be ALL I can be, even at 57. It's s master of perspective. To serve my fellow man.

I agree with this! I'm a personal trainer and work at a gym and everyone worships the guy who's got the biggest muscles. Being fit isn't just about having the biggest muscles. I'm not very big and everyone underestimates me at work because I'm not jacked even though I put a lot of effort on my fitness, doing HIIT and body weight. It's just sad to see....

I agree with that. Many of you who are saying he is trying to stop u from setting goals I've got something for you. Take 2 guys, One guy puts all of his effort into working out and once he got some gains he is all into posing and showing off. That was cause his target was to show off his gains and that was all about working out. The second guy puts in all his effort into working out.. but he never tells a word in public about all he has been doing. Which guy has cleaner target of building muscle?
Work hard in silence, let your success make all the noise

I agree with you. Hate that guys who feel superior through lifting and just do it for others and not themselves. But you have to keep in mind that every person who does strenght training, or any other sports, has different goals or achievements that he want to reach for himself and his life. And often it has something to do with your ego, that you want not only to become physically stronger, but also personally. So everyone has his own reasons and you should respect them.

Well, anybody that goes to a gym to inflate their ego in any way is going there for the wrong reasons. I go to the gym not only to help get myself in better shape, but the gym I go to is one I can use as a place of recreation, as well as a place to have fun while trying to get in better shape at the same time. And it's my belief that if you're not having fun to some degree, then it's not entirely worth the trouble. Sure I have goals, but I want to have fun and enjoy myself in the process of achieving them.
For instance, after not going to the gym at which I'm a member for 7 weeks due to finances and terrible weather, I started back last week, and I've started keeping a log of how far I can go on an exercise bike this year, but I'm doing so using a regular routine, and I'm doing nothing out of the ordinary to inflate the amount that I do on the exercise bike, which is currently 30 minutes (which at the pace I ride it has amounted to 10.8 miles), but I do hope to increase it later on in the year. And not only that, but I'm using it at a setting in which I actually have to put out some effort. But I have no specific goal in mind, but rather an answer to a private question, while trying to get in better shape.

Nice, to trust in God is very important, but to trust in oneself is also important.
"Christ gives me the strength to face anything" - Phil. 4:13. In other words, we also have to put in the effort ourselves, meaning we need a degree of trust in ourselves.

    • @Jeff_the_ApocalypticGameCat
      @Jeff_the_ApocalypticGameCat 10 лет назад +2

Sorry: I stand by my King James, but the meaning here is the same :p
But you are misunderstanding that verse; I've gotta say.
"I can do all things through Christ with strengtheneth me."
That is to say that we need him to do all things. We can't do them without Christ. We are sinful creatures, capable of nothing good without him. Understand? Yes, we can do all things through Christ, but it's also true that we can do nothing without Christ. Confidence placed in yourself is wrong placed.
      From the King James Bible:
*Proverbs 3:5 - Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.*
Proverbs 16:9 - A man's heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.
*Isaiah **40:31** - But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.*
Deuteronomy 20:4 - For the LORD your God is he that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.
*Psalms 56:3 - 56:4 - What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.*
*In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.*
Isaiah 41:10 - Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.
Don't take any of that as believing in yourself.

Also, whats wrong with getting stronger to be admired? This doesn't automatically equate to that being your only goal or thinking that your better than anyone else? I workout for many reasons. For my girlfriend, myself, better performance in different activities, admiration from others, etc. This does not mean Im an ass at the gym trying to lift more to make me feel like Im worth more than anyone else. Of course this is also different from friendly competition of sorts. Trying to get as strong or stronger than someone as a goal. This also doesn't make someone an "ego-lifter" or a bad person for setting goals to help attain something. I hope you realize that your video massively generalized people who lift for the looks and admiration of others.

I do pull ups and dips everyday because I don't want my muscles and posture to deteriorate. I'm not that young anymore. I think our muscles need to be worked out just to maintain them. I try to up my reps in my sets and aim to be able to do muscle ups just to keep it fun. I think I'm not doing it to lift my ego though I notice my body is developing a V physique. Good reminder there. Thumbs up.

I have a friend who wants to be big, and whenever he works out, even if its once in a month, the next day he'd come to be all flexing and bragging about how he works out. I find it really amusing but its full cocky headed. I try my best to change his mindset on working out, but it doesn't really work :L He is the one who got me into working out, its just that while i went down another path, he strayed into some other weird cocky path and he doesn't seem to be very consistent because he isn't motivated.
If you workout to feel healthier, to feel better, you're always gonna be motivated to workout because personally, I find that feeling healthy comes a lot faster than looking big, when you workout. I've been working out for over a year now, and although it has been on and off, at the moment im at my peak of fitness, and I dont look very big. I tell people I work out and they dont believe me but when I do my push ups and pull ups with ease, im always hoping they realise and try to do the same.

awesome video i totaly get your point, but i think that even the mindset "wanting to look bigger and buffer" isnt that bad, its a goal and it will only be acomplished if you put time and effort into it. just the attitude that is going to ruin the whole

Bosshogg386 why not for looks? if it makes someone feel better about themselves why shouldn't they lift and want to be in better shape, rather than stay where they are and be unhappy? by this logic if your trying to transfer your body to help boost self esteem don't because its "ego-lifting"

I am not BW, I use a barbell. However, I still love the point he is trying to make.
I workout not so that I can further recognize my body but so that I can forget it. By doing it, I am less self conscience and focus on more important things like my spiritual walk and other people.
    To God be the glory.

Wow, I never thought believing in yourself could be such a negative thing. You made some good points though, I def see that I do this sometimes. But, at the same time, believing in myself has brought achievements that have given me a brighter outlook on life and how I can affect and grow in this world. And I won't stop believing in myself just because Fortress said so. Wolves don't fret over the opinions of sheep.

Hey Paul /Fortress. From what I understood from your previous videos is that when aiming for mass you do slow controlled movements with sets of 5 to 12 reps. So I started off by reaching 25 controlled push ups because 12 just did not feel like enough, then went on to 25 elevated ones.
Anyways, my question is should I consider learning 1 arm push ups or should I do more reps. I might sound confusing but I searched it on google and some say that you need to a lot of reps to gain mass when it comes to calisthenics so your muscles burn chemical energy, but too many will just work more endurance and your nervous system or something like that :
"you build big muscles by draining the chemical energy in your muscle cells. Over time, your body responds to this threat by accumulating greater and greater stores of chemical energy in the cells. This makes them swell, and voila-bigger muscles. But to trigger this extra storage, you gotta exhaust the chemical energy in those cells. This can only be done by hard, sustained work."
    Here is one site:

    Thanks in advance.

While I clearly see your point, and understand it to certain extent, there is more to 'believing in self' than one might see at first glance. I tend to believe in self, because I believe I was born with a purpose. And as such through 'believing in self' I simply believe in the higher purpose. Some call it God, some call it Universe, Life energy, there are many names. To me, important is to understand life is not about you and the others. It's about you though the others, as they are not your opponents, they are born with same purpose behind them.
Just my feelings, other than that I like what you do and thank you you do that ;)

Totally disagree. I had low self esteem for years, so started reading success type books. went to a Tony Robbins seminar. I totally believe in myself and that I can achieve anything I want to. I still care for people. I still do things for other people. I am also a man of faith and science, only faith in humanity and faith in myself. I do not believe in what the bible tells me to believe or what religion tells me I should do and believe. I make my own mind up rather than being brainwashed by an organisation (religion) designed to controll the masses. Its not thinking you are better than others, or better than 'poor' people etc. Its being better than who I was last week and being the best I can be so I can help others better.

We as male primates are naturally competitive, it's just the way we are. The whole thinking you're better than everyone else is more of a mind set to get yourself in to boost confidence. It's better than comparing yourself with other people.

Only to an extent that people boost their egos from gyms but there is a thing as looking aesthetically pleasing for your own gains. This may seem counter-intuitive towards building a spiritual being but it is a good indicator on how your body physically changes over a period of time and knowing that the results from the work out is potentially a good thing. The matter of this subject is solely subjective on fitness but God cannot be the answer to the question we all seek. Once we have balance than we will find our own god, our god-like power.
