Reading the setter. Understanding the other team's offense; what they like to do, what they are good at. Understanding the hitter's tendencies and capabilities.
I.e. if an outside hitter is always coming in from way outside, I'm going to instruct my blockers to take their angle and sharp angle and FORCE them to cut (and at a much lower speed) down the line where I'll have my line defender (with his foot on the sideline) pick up that line shot.
Proper defense: by proper, I mean solid blocking techniques*, and solid communication between the blockers and the back row.
Also (and this is a coach's choice) but I would not have my outside blockers so close to the middle. The middle is not their primary assignment, outside hitters are.
*you cannot establish a proper bond/link with your back row, blockers, when you float, act like an NFL field goal upright, or shift your hands at the last second to 'trick' a hitter (odds are against you on that), yet I see bad form all the time, and even more often, players online, making all kinds of excuses for having bad form.
