Tennessee Valley 610: Spring on Missionary Ridge 2010

- As we get ready to begin another exciting year of steam-powered adventures, let's take a look back eight years ago to when US Army 610 was the main workhorse for the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum. In March of 2010, about a week before I started this channel, I made a brief visit to see her leading the Missionary Ridge Local between Grand Junction and East Chattanooga. A lot has changed at TVRM since then - at the conclusion of the 2010 season, 610 was retired and replaced with Southern 630, and 4501 joined three years later. At the time it was thought that 610 would be returned to service following 4501 as part of Norfolk Southern's 21st Century Steam program, but with the inclusion of 765 and 611 and the subsequent cancellation of mainline steam excursions, there was no need for a third steam locomotive in Chattanooga. Still, 610 is the perfect size for short-haul excursions and is in good condition - I'm sure we'll see her steamed up again someday. (Hopefully with a new, less annoying bell.)
She is a very beautiful steam loco. Those rods a'turnin and the whistle a'whistin, nothing in this world like steam
Hakeem M That is a lovely whistle too. Seems to be like the Virginia & Southwestern 3 Chime (Ps-4 knockoff). She was a nice sounding engine, money knock was the bell underneath that rang so rapidly.
It almost sounds like the same whistle that Frisco 1522 has.
I miss the 610. She was the first steam locomotive I rode behind and I wanna see her run again
Lane's Trains same. I rode behind her when I was almost 6 months old
@@SouthernRaiIs1186 same
Very nice video! I love 610, as she's my favorite engine at TVRM. I've been to TVRM twice (once in 2007 and again in 2010) both times with 610 on the point. I hope she comes back into service again. I think I'll visit TVRM again very soon.
You'll be happy to hear that 610 was just recently moved into the shop for an evaluation for restoration. I would expect to see her running again just a few years from now.
+SmokyMtnSteam Thank you for that. Can hardly wait for her to be back in steam. And, like I said very nice work on this video.
Fun fact: 610 stared in the josh turner music video, Long Black Train
That's how I found this train. Such a beautiful song, to.
I think that was 630 610 starred in Eric church creeping
0:07 I like this scene where 4501 & 610 are right next to each other.
610 was just rolled into the shop for an evaluation on whether it can restored or not.
The prospect of having three in steam at TVRM is very exciting.
Lets see what the future holds.
I am having flash back to when was little at the day Out With Thomas and 610 whistle would all way scare me I’m now I am just startled when it gets me off guard
I miss 610 running on missionary ridge local
Nice flashback!
Thanks! I've got one of the Three Rivers Rambler coming next week.
Former United States Army 2-8-0 Consolidation 610 was build in 1952.
I hope 610 will might return to service
Did you know that The #610 and the GSMR #1702 are the only remaining USA Army Railroad Steam Engines? Maybe when #610 is restored it could take a trip to GSMR to meet up with #1702 (well that’s probably never gonna happen but it would be awesome)
Kinda incorrect there buddy. There's Granite Rock Co. s100 #10 and a USATC s160 at the age of steam roundhouse. Lets not forget the rest of the USATC engines in the uk and the last s160 in Russia.
@@lividuke dont forget alaska railroad 557
Nice
Good video!
Thanks. Personally I can't help but cringe whenever I see how bad my camerawork was back then.
Well it’s decent for a start up. At least it’s not constant shaking like mine was.
The L & N Car was not restored during 610 service....It is patched with different vidoes
I have a 1950 Tennessee valley railroad spike
Why isn't she ran anymore, she was quite beautiful
FazbearLegun53/ TrainManButton they have 630 and 4501 to do the honors now. Also heard something about it’s boiler. Can’t remember what though.
The boiler ticket expired back 2010
Boiler ticket still has 2 days on it. Loco was left outside for a steam North Pole Limited trip, and the injectors froze overnight. They couldn’t get them working. After 1,470 days of service, it was deemed wise to spend all the effort to fix them. As such though, 610 was not entirely drained and winterised, adding to potential restoration cost. Not to mention she is smaller and will likely need a “heavy overhaul”, whereas 630 and 4501 have had those, and will most likely need light overhauls when their tickets run out. Possibly even 2 times.
The 610 is not in service anymore because of its boiler, but it is way to old to be restored by now.
Acutally Ks-1 Productions, it was 2011, right before they brought 630 back to service
Any idea what whistle that is?
Consolidation Productions It’s a Virginia Southwestern 3 chime.
She is being evaluated by TVRM
I saw her in steam back in 2009...or...was it 2008? Yeah I think it was 2008
TVRM is about to restore 610 we are all hood
She’s Being restored
Not so fast, she's just being evaluated for a possible restoration at the moment. Still pretty exciting!
SmokyMtnSteam - while I was at work today actually met someone from Tennessee Valley Railway Museum and he did confirm that they are going to restore 610
If they don't I want to buy her
would 610 be back again.
Not anytime soon sadly
Hey SmokyMtnSteam Can I use some of your footage? (I will credit you)
For what purpose?
@@SmokyMtnSteam For the purpose of my Top 6 retired steam excursion stars.
@@traintraveler5413 Sounds cool, as long as I'm credited go ahead.
Thanks!
This locomotive could've been sent to Korea.
Was 21st century steam always intended to be a short term thing or did Rich Anderson's retirement lead to it's cancellation?
Myles Spear when it began they said they wanted it to last 5 year at the least which it did.
Dossett Yard Productions okay that's what I thought. Thanks!
21st Century Steam was originally announced to be a five-year program using only TVRM's locomotives. I think there was some intention to extend the program around the time 611 was being restored, but by 2015 Wick Moorman had retired, revenues were down due to the collapse of the coal market, and Hunter Harrison was attempting a hostile takeover of Norfolk Southern, so they just let it die when the contracts expired.
Not a very big fan of that bell. I like the sound of a manually swung bell better
I totally agree, 610's bell always got on my nerves. I still look forward to seeing it run again.
SmokyMtnSteam I do too. When should 610 return to service?
@@mattdotsonrailfanproductio266 Tvrm hasn't begun work on the engine yet so there's no real timeline. They want it done before 630s 1472 days expire but it's not a high priority project.
SmokyMtnSteam oh okay
