This is how Blues was meant to be heard, with crickets and cicadas in the background.
IDGRAF KILLERS NO DONT SIDE WITH YOU
If you cant do what this guy is doing, no matter what genre you play, you aint got shit, mans sat in a field probably got a car battery hooked up to the amp, and no auto tune or fx in sight and he kicks ass, people need to learn a bit from his example. Music about expression not fancy equipment, he could probably make music with anything he wanted and it would be better than todays si called talent, a true artist
Yep
Never mind the music that shirt definitely needed to be preserved for future generations.
Genius with a golden smile
RIP Mr. Burnside...
"Rockin' in Perpetuity."

Ohh god! and the look in his eyes...
no rest just parties I guess
I'm pretty mad there's not an album of him just playing solo in his backyard
You can get the Alan Lomax recordings on a label called Roundet Records…
@@Kowasi google RL Burnside 1984
Making a playlist of these now 👍
there'is first recordings in which he'is only with his guitar
You're mad about that?
He doesn't even know how good he is! ❤
So much funk and soul in this man. A true one man band.
This is such a good demonstration on how most American music derives from the blues. Soul, rock, funk, you can feel it all in here. But the real thing that strikes me is that he's likely self taught on the guitar (based on his technique) and plays with incredible feel and rhythm.
Northern MS hill country blues is blues and magic! A true artform.
He is hell of a guitar player
Hell of..👍🎶💕
I saw RL in Newcastle (Australia ) in the early 1990's after the release of the "Deep Blues" documentary. He played with other artists at a club venue which was only 3/4 full. Audience consisted of university students and old Blues enthusiasts like myself. At the end of the night he played an encore and the whole venue shouted for more. He asked what we wanted to hear - The answer was "anything". He was so unassuming - signed autographs - talked with audience members. It was a great show - but RL was the star.
yea. the fame they gave him in his later life killed him. The money he made easy was all spent on whiskey. drank himself to death.
That sounds like a pure and one of a kind moment , the whole show I mean, what a privilege to witness it , blues back in the day had such a big and wonderful community I hope to see broaden as wide again
@@knowmusicman157 i rather go out drunk and famous than poor and unknown.
@@sz1273 being famous can come different ways. Charles Manson and Lee Harvey Oswald went out famous. Jeffrey Dahmer. Too. Go out any way you like. Know Music Man was just stating a fact.
@@dr.krinkleweldon5934 I think you're confusing famous with infamous there is a slight difference.
He's like John Lee hooked his guitar is the drums the bass and guitar all at the same time. Then he sings on top. They don't make these guys any more. He was the coolest musician I ever met. Hung out with him for 3 or four hours partying after one of his shows. I think I became a better musician just by sitting next to him. So cool that guy.
Such an inspiration as a musician as well, I'd appreciate it if you could listen to my songs on my channel and tell me what you think
WE ALL LOVE R L BURNSIDE
Thanks to Alan Lomax Project to keep this music for ever alive and give us, around the world, the chance to know the roots of so special music.
That riff can go with anything.
This is the best version of this song. And the riff is sooo good. Especially the lead he does. It’s almost like the lead is the chorus of the song.
He seemed very shy.. and humble.
white people always made him uncomfortable.....but ya know
He killed a man once, over a game of dice
He just doesn't want you looking at his secrets guitar moves
@@oscar9680 he didn't shoot to kill him tho that was between him and the lord RL just shot him in the head XD
i think the real magic of RL is his amazing rhythmic skills. when he plays i'm hypnotized. i'm just amazed.
Robert Lee Burnside! It doesn't get any better than this (period).
if you can't boogie to that well then i can't help you. That's absolute boogie.
Hes eyes ❤️ sad and happy at the same time 🌾🎸
Blues l’ do it to ya
The people who hit dislike are no friends of mine.
Yeah! This is real music here... My music ears have been expanded 👍
Look up the black keys "the moan" it's a good homage to this song
Sir William Henry Perkin love the crickets in the background.
True that!
camera guy was like....."ooooh berries".
Tyler Stuckey and not just any berries the poisonous poke berry.
haha :D
Camera man was like, oh shit, this guy is uncomfortable....lets go look away...ooh berries!
Durk Durka my name is Michael Williams. I'm an aspiring blues artist. I'm very interested in networking and connecting with people. Can I get a sub back?
Tyler Stuckey ahhhh
I opened for RL. At a blues fest him and Cedric dug my drumming and our band, I was so honored got to pass the bottle around with them, tho I think Ced didn't drink. God bless us all.
Because drinking got his daddy in a lot of trouble eventually killed him.
R. L. Burnside (November 23, 1926 - September 01, 2005) was an American blues singer, songwriter and guitarist. He played music for much of his life but received little recognition before the early 1990s. In the latter half of that decade, Burnside recorded and toured with Jon Spencer, garnering crossover appeal and introducing his music to a new fan base in the punk and garage rock scenes.

Ya just know that was his BEST shirt - prob a Christmas gift - and he just LUVED it to death.
That’s LEGEND STATUS right der. RIP R.L - you R sorely missed in these troubled times.
That smile is priceless. So is his music.
RL had the talent and oh whata sound😊
no one will ever sound like this I'm an advanced guitar player but the soul that comes out of this is amazing!
If you can hear it, you can find it!
.....Him n Skip James can’t be compared to another blues boy
with a name like Cederic Ratcliff...you better be an advanced guitar player!
@alterdestiny Exactly ! His comment told me that he's not really into playing hills blues.
yeah I can't figure out how he does the "chaka" part if you know what I mean
G'day from Australia. If I went to America I would love to see stuff like this. The south seems really interesting. Forget Hollywood or Disneyland.
Plenty of good music in Australia too!
I saw him in Australia. I think he only visited once. Great show. True blues music.
sounds like a locomotve coming down the tracks so sweet n beautiful damn i luv it
01:58 Berries. Your time to shine. Take it away!
Berries Manilow
You saw the opportunity and went for it
Man....those berries are sweet as hell.
Alex Maione lol
Could be a reference to Mr. Chuck…
Beautiful smile & soul - & totally unpretentious. 🎼
'See My Jumper Hangin On The Line' was my first taste of RL's music a few years back. I've been a fan from the first time I heard it. I've listened to as much of his music as I could find. What a treasure.
SAME here, bought as much as his music too to support his existing family. His grandson Cedric is great too.
You all should check out Cedric Burnside. Keeping his legacy alive.
This is an old folk song that has been around since the 1800s, though modified from artist to artist the original recording was released by Gus Cannon(banjo/vocals) and Blind Blake(Guitar) in 1927, on side B was "He's in the Jailhouse Now" (Also the first recorded version) by the same artists.
I wish i could just listen to his stories more. I just feel that he is worth listening to.
I was listening to the Black Keys version of this song and dang! RL killed this even more with just the one guitar 🎶
LOU ANN RYAN SEE YA TO THE JOINT FOR LIES
Man that riff is funky
Heard this from the black keys, glad to be redirected.
Same!
I love this man..May God rest his soul! Such a legend!
Have to laugh. This song is strangely familiar. "Jumper on my Line." He just changed the lyrics. Now I have to decide which one I like the best.
Laugh all you want.....did you watch the tv show????????????Ironic the name of it was Can you hear me laughing or something like that....check it out
@@stevecasey6582 what is this tv show of which you speak?
Yes he changed the lyrics and guitar part it's a little bit different
There’s a little bit of a different giddy up to it
do you comprehend the concepts of boogie and blues?
Of the soul .........it's not about where your from it's about where you're at
Without even trying he exudes coolness and humility.
I love these old blues tunes. Thank you for posting.
Damn. That index finger picking. That's unusual and interesting.
Love one chord boogie blues.
Rip Mr Burnside you are greatly missed
This is treasure, thank you for sharing!
Another great upload! Thank you for sharing! Love the Burnside style.

A soulful voice and a catchy groove, quintessential American music. Big thanks to the recorder (Lomax) for this gem.
I've loved this since it was "See My Jumper Hanging on the Line."
One of the best right here!
thanks a bunch!
I love his groove gets me moving
The trueness of spirit in his playing ..... these kind of legends are getting fewer by the year.
Fantastic voice
I could listen to this kinda music all day long, too many times and never get tired. His song comes from heavens
Year I was born... Thanks R.L. Burnside for teaching #TheBlackKeys somethings!!!

nothing but sympathy for the record industry. god bless all lomax .
What a master. I'm not sure there's a music lover on this planet who can listen to this blindfolded and guess exactly where this music came from.
Great smile. He was probably just happy that he got to share a song that he wrote with someone new. He takes a lot of justifiable pride in it. Like most prolific artists, he was only truly discovered not long before he died.
I saw him in FL awesome dude, pure, true and actually funky, mystical
Incredible. This music is uniquely American and that's so cool. We can be proud of this.
Thank god for Alan Lomax.
I wonder what the deal is with that vignetting around the frame.
Could be a lens hood.
Can we say 1970's backyard footage?
Love...Love...Love...Love this!
Excellent
I cannot listen to this without nearly crying....beautiful
*How true. This single recoding is... in/of & by itself... a free-standing & right proper **_masterpiece._*
The most gracious, humble, infectious smile he possessed, talented, no more of this in our days of a magician will we see.....may the creator rest your soul in peace...that was when the world was alive, now surley it's sick with Satan✊🏿
We love the culture.....
Let’s love each other
Step across that line
Tear down that wall
Leave that Devil behind
This just prove to me I don’t need an youtube tutorial on how to play the guitar it’s about finding your own sweet spot doing it your own way...this man is strumming with his index finger mainly
true american music
More please, thanks.
Definitely a Guyatone Guitar - mid/late sixties. R. L. makes it sing. As others have said - took way too long to discover his music and am so glad I did!
This song is standard tuning tuned up one step. RL didn't use a tuner, just got it close because he didn't care. It's simply an E minor and E Minor Penatonic Scale. Easy in essence, difficult because there is soul.
And his use of rhythm is profound. It sounds like something straight out of Senegal. Like Farka Toure or something. I'd like to see folks try and recreate it.
@@abbanjo13 Ali Farka touré was from Mali ;)
@@fabriceployart5124 True. But similar stringed instruments to what he plays have equivalent traditions in Senogambia.
Thank you!
Love his music
love n love for rl burnside!!!!!!
