I've listened to all the RL ones where He is sitting here. They are so, soooo pure, the guitar has a rubber band type feeling with his claw and hammer rhythm hand so fluid and outside sounds of the crickets, trees and kids is just in the moment hill country blues at its raw finest.
I really wish I new about this great blues legend years ago. He is truly amazing and his music is hypnotic to real blues musicians and fans. I will never forget you sir. I’m a huge fan.
Burnside played music, his whole life, even when working other jobs. The area of Mississippi that he is from, is right close to Memphis. It's well documented that Elvis used to frequent the blues bars with the black folk, when he was in high school, and before he was famous. BB King remembered him, from that time. At any rate, those guys playing the blues were a major influence on Elvis, and I believe that it's highly likely that Burnside influenced Elvis. Burnside didn't gain any notice until long after Elvis died, so I doubt that Elvis would have remembered it, and Burnside probably wouldn't have remembered either (he'd have likely been too drunk, lol) Also, Burnside served 6 months in prison, for murder. Quarrel over some dice, as I recall. At his trial, he told the judge, "I ain't mean to kill him; I just meant to shoot the somebitch in the head. Him dyin' was between him and the Lord." Apparently, RL drove a tractor better than he played guitar, so his boss pulled some strings to get him out of prison early. And this concludes today's segment of "Answers to Questions Ain't Nobody Ask".
When I first heard blues music, is was an out of body experience. The sound of the blues guitar was truly captivating. No other form of music has come close, in my opinion, to portraying the emotions and feelings of humanity...
R. L. Burnside (November 23, 1926 - September 01, 2005) was an American blues singer, songwriter and guitarist. He played music for much of his life but received little recognition before the early 1990s. In the latter half of that decade, Burnside recorded and toured with Jon Spencer, garnering crossover appeal and introducing his music to a new fan base in the punk and garage rock scenes. ✍️✍️✍️✍️✍️✍️✍️✍️✍️✍️✍️✍️✍️✍️✍️✍️✍️✍️✍️✍️🤝🤝🤝🤝🤝🤝🤝🤝🤝🤝🤝🤝🤝🤝🤝🤝🤝🤝🤝🤝✍️✍️✍️✍️✍️✍️✍️✍️
hadron89 for the most part. You must be smoking crack. Climate scientists are agreed we are heading toward catastrophic climate collapse and Donald trump is putting children in cages.
What about Humanity? Isn't it necessary before all else? What value does knowledge have if wielded incorrectly? R.L. Burnside sure is highly intelligent if you ask me. He brought artistry to the world that which is just that which makes life worth living.
Wow,this is 2024 and how i passed over RL is beyond me! I always new where the blues came from, this only makes it more binding,to what i always believed! I think of my mother when i listen, and i know where i got the musical talent from!! Thank you so much for posting!!
Makes me sad to watch this because I didn't know this was happening in 1978. I didn't know about RL until about 1998 and by then it was almost too late. I missed so much great blues. RL was by far one of my favorite hill country artists, so overlooked for so long, such great music. Love these archive videos - thank you so much for posting.
He is definitely in my Hall of Fame. The only way to truly give thanks is to take a massive tube amp into a cornfield next to some railroad tracks, magically find a plug, turn up to 11, and play "See My Jumper Hanging On The Line" until your fingers fall off.
Thank you Alan Lomax for all of these amazing Burnside clips. And thank you for all of your music and what you have shared over the years too; what you have made available to the World is of such importance, you deserve a million times more recognition. Bless you, man
Clearly one of Jimi Hendix's influences, this man is unreal. And on THAT guitar no less. Imagine a $5g Gibson in this man's hands. It's just a shame he didn't get discovered until later in life. Blues in its rawest form, this one departs from the rhythmic, droning type of boogie blues he was known for and is about as traditional as R.L. gets. He IS the blues.
@@gogobaga yes, you are right in a manner of speaking. Because to make this guitar sound like he is, it is almost inconceivable. I play myself. And I am not bad. But I can imagine myself trying to make this guitar sound like only he can and I know for me anyway, it would not be possible. Mainly due to the fact that he is finger picking without finger picks mind you, something I cannot manage on my best day. Using primarily his pointer or index finger with long nails, he does use other fingers and I have tried this, it is not as easy as some make it look. The timing of using more than just the single pick I learned with is overwhelming for me. But I still try. I don't have any quit in me and although hearing someone as good as this man is can be a bit disheartening I don't let it deter me from practice. If I could one day be as half as good as R.L. was, and be lucky enough to be able to hear his influence in my playing that would be just fine with me. I would be proud to keep a small part of him and the hill country blues alive. If Lomax had only found him 20 yrs earlier.
The year I graduated, wish I had known these blues then ,like I know these blues now ,my education came after school ,and has continues to this day ,cause of blues men like RL ...

His kids got him going on the internet and that put so much life into him during his last years, it was like it made it all worth while after all. I like how humble he is in these sessions. That jumps out I think, he doesn't even have any socks on with his boots! Most likely he just finished working and did get his best shirt on for the occasion. he and all the other blues men never did get any money from those recordings until years later, even then I don't think it came close to what Lomax got. Thank you very much for posting his songs here.
As guy who grew up in the 80s back and forth between Atlanta and Birmingham on interstate 20, I really consider this MY American culture. In a world where 7th generation Americans still feel the need to call themselves Italian, German, Irish etc, this is the culture of America as I grew up in it.

Barely his music right now and it's pretty cool. Taught me about making an electric guitar sound loud without any amplifier. Just stick a staple on the back end of the fret and the end of the guitar. Thank you sir..

Absolutely, remembering when and why he wrote it :)
He is 52 years old there. Amazing teeth, amazing genetics! His teeth at 52 look better than mine at 35!
It sounds like a raw haunting cry . This is the blues in its purest form.
Thank you Alan Lomax the people a thousand years from now will still appreciate what you did 🙏
Wrote Alan while he was still alive thanking him. His daughter read my letter to him and responded. Lomax understood the blues.

I hope this man is in the rock and roll hall of fame and people who play need to say thank you
No way. We don't want his memory tarnished with that crap.
Forget a damn rock hall of fame. None of that stuff matter at all period. I mean who really want to feel important about something like that
RnR HoF is a joke. It's better to not be in it, imo.
