    I found a pretty good deal on ER collets around here on FB Marketplace. I got full sets of ER11, ER16 & ER20's and collet chucks for each one for $30. They're really good when needing to hold something super small.

    There are ER tapping collets and that’s a much better choice for taps. They are made to the actual shank size with a properly sized square opening at the rear. I’ve had bigger size taps slip in regular collets, then those collets may get damaged. If that happens you have to throw it away. Buy a good chuck. The cheap ones are often too off concentric. Same with collets. I’ve tested cheap ones and some are off by thousandths. Not worth it. If you find you’re breaking small mill bits, that’s often why.

  • @brucewilliams6292

    Hello Stuart, I went with ER-32 too as it will cover the largest range of sizes. In case you don't know, there are over-sized collets which go all the way to 26mm and still maintain their concentricity. I purchased them to hold stock in my lathe and they work well.

  • @chrisstephens6673
    @chrisstephens6673 4 года назад +3

    Good overview.
    How about getting an ER40 holder and just buy the collets from 20 to 25 rather than a whole set. You could also just get a collet for the common end mill sizes, to save money but still have the convenience.
    You may have noticed from my videos that i use a lot of ER20 collets holders so i have a full set of collets but also doubles of the common endmill sizes, in my case 6 8 10 12 mm, but for you imperialists that would be 1/4 5/16 3/8 and 1/2.
    The reason i went with ER20 is because you can get the holders come with a 20mm straight shank which is the largest common R8 collet to have my version of the TTS set up.

    • @StuartdeHaro

      I'd go with ER40 to get a bit more capacity on the lathe. The mill holders get a little bulky, but it's not a deal breaker.

    Where do you buy good quality ER chucks.?? I am willing to pay for US made, but none seem to be found. I have my whole shop with almost every machine able to use ER40. But I got the various Morse taper or R-8 adapters from Ebay sellers, mostly from China. I buy from US sellers, but the ER adapters are from China. H&H Industrial Products seems to import most of them, and various re-sellers distribute them. I have a few of them, right at half a thousandth runout. I am oK with half a thou, but no more than that. It is so much of a crap shoot, I started buying 2 of any one adapter, and sending back the one with the worse runout. Any good sellers of more precision ER adapters ??

    • @StuartdeHaro
      @StuartdeHaro  4 года назад +1

      Maritool sells them, although not in R8 or morse. They have straight shank tools and 40 and 50 taper tools. Check out Glacern as well. I'm not sure of the country of origin (R8's are about $100), but I have bought several things from them and they are all very nice. MSC actually carries several high quality brands and some are made in the US, but I only saw straight shanks and 40 and 50 taper tools with that search. Let me know if you find anything!
