When I was working the old New Haven electrified zone, I had just dropped my train in the upper yard at Stamford and was walking to my truck when the stationmasters told me I was needed back at the wire train to grab their engine to rescue a dead Amtrak. An eastbound Amtrak the motor had died and I was to run the diesel to go get her. It was an Alco RS-3 with an EMD V-12 567 rated at 1200 horsepower. The train had snagged the wire and destroyed the pantograph's E-60CPH. One dead E60 and 23 Amfleet cars to new haven then light engine back to Stamford. Not the fastest locomotive but it did the job and we arrived in New Haven 1 hour 38 minutes late. Top speed with the old repowered Alco was 53 mph. We arrived and tied on to the dead train 49 minutes after they died. Fortunately the conductor had a 2 way radio with him as the Alco wasn't equipped with a intercom system like the Amtrak engines are. Bridgeport tower wanted to know know why we weren't making schedule and I replied " with only 1200 horsepower your lucky we're making the time we are. When a train dies on the road you grab whatever power is available. The tower asked if I could get any more power out of her and I replied be happy we have this engine instead of a 600 horsepower engine the wire train had last week. Didn't hear any more questions after that.
yea great catch of this auto train leaving this area agin this time in the show sorry you didn't get any horn action through that recent area because of a quite zone sadly
That train is darn near long enough to have some helpers at the end... I guess because its flat as a pancake between Lorton and Sanford they figure they don't need them...
How do just 2 P42DCs pull all that???? I'm guessing the Auto train doesn't have to deal with a lot of terrain? I tried this in train simulator and with just two engines, it takes forever to get the train moving. As oppose to pulling the Coast Starlight, which is way easier.
Carlos Phill I have ridden the auto train often, again coming up at thanksgiving and the power units do not struggle and get up to track speed seemingly effortlessly. A great trip.
@@CDLClassA I fixed my engines and I just tested them: Two P42s (the 1st in normal mode the 2nd in HEP mode), plus 18 superliners and 32 autoracks in Miami. It behaved exactly like in the video!
We have the same on our Great Southern Trains. For a fee (it was cheap for me) we can take our car as well. We may do the same in the states. What's it cost to take a car along? I will try Amtrak but would like the personal touch people.

Notch 8 to even get moving...
The tractive effort and the power of the RSC P42s and the Miami P42s is not accurate. That's why you could barely move with the Auto Train.
@@apollosaturn5 Ah, I see. Thanks for the info. Also, wow this comment is old. But I remember posting this. lol

It costs about $500 for a regular car. Plus you have to buy a ticket for yourself.
The sound of AMD YIKES!
Great video!
I like the video
40 cars not including the p40’s
THATS A LONG ASS TRAIN FOR 2 P42DC LOCOMOTIVE.
those p40's must of been smoken
