"It's not what hardware you use, it's how you use it"
Couldn't be more true.
This is the kind of review I was looking for: no endless waffle about specs, knobs, and switches -- just a demo of someone playing it, and showing that it can do the things I like to hear. Thanks!
Man not bad for 200 bucks! New guitar players today have some good options! But then again Johan could probably plug into a can of Baked Beans and make it sound amazing! Hehe.
+Matt Brown Thanks Matt :-) That's kind of you
lol
baked beans! that killed me lol
I have played on that amp before at my friends house. Trust me it doesn't sound that good, yet again their guitar was like 70 dollars lol
that playing is uniquely you. no matter what amp or guitar you play it will be your voice but very similar tone....can't get away from our hands. your playing is always great. thanks again for the great channel
+Revelry 1969 Thanks, so glad to hear that!
I'm about to pick this bundle up my self its the one i have been wanting to start learning
The more I watch your vids the more I become a real fan. It's a very special package you offer each time : your footages of nature, the split image, the awesome playing, the great rigs and each time either a great idea or at least a very useful one. You and Nick Jaffe (JustNick) turned me into a real geek! And I love it!
+byebyebeano Thanks! That makes me really glad! And I like JustNicks channel too. Cheers Johan
It really does come down to what kind of tone you want and which equipment helps inspire an individual to pick it up and use it enough to develop proficiency. Another instructive video, thanks Johan!
+Rick McCargar Thanks man! Cheers Johan
Stumbled across your videos a few times now and you seem to tackle the questions/comparisons the rest of us wonder about but never get around to working out for ourselves, even if we had the resources to do so - very interesting, informative and entertaining. Regards, from the U.K.
+Stuart Hossack Thanks Stuart, Really glad to hear that. Cheers!
I got this pack and a distortion pedal, and it sounds really good!
what pedal did you get- I just got one of these guitars today.
Awesome video demo!! Like your stuff.
I'm amazed, you can literally make anything sound good!
+George Swift Thanks man! Great to hear that!
I was recently gifted one of these for a significant birthday - lovely guitar. Great to hear the sounds you got out of it too :) Subbed and liked.
Glad to hear it, welcome to the channel!
Johan Segeborn Many thanks :)
This sounds really good, i guess a good guitar player like you are could get anything sound good, i think the magic is in the fingers...
+HearGear Thanks man, yeah and the kind of blues rock I'm playing is very forgiving to lo-fi tone. Cheers
Yes you are right about that... :D
Inspiring and educational. Your mic placement optimizes the sounds from that little package, but still, phenomenal!
I can't afford a fancy guitar and I really want to start playing guitar it's a dream , the only guitar can afford is that cheap starter pack and I thought it will be worthless but you taught me that the magic in the fingers
thanks
I picked an Epiphone S-10 real cheap and made it in to a head. it absolutely cranks for a 10 watt amp. and the distortion is killer. reminds me of an Ibanez Tube screamer pedal. got that thick piecing crunch. I love that thing.
yes definitely the player. Cheers Johan you the man.
+Revelry 1969 Cheers! :-) I'm blushing here
Huh! Sounds quite good, actually! Didn't expect that! Great job!
+Blues Bengan Thanks :-) me neither
This show how much of the sound is in the hands of the guitarist!
+Kjetil Myhre Berge Thanks man :-)
Just purchased this based on your review. Cheers!
What an amazing playing skills! You should teach us some of that magic!
+Darvik 1982 Thanks, that's kind of you. I'd be glad to some more playing/riff tutorials. Cheers
Ha! Brilliant! This clip will serve as a great future reference to help bust many myths on many guitar forums.
+Loup Garou Thanks, that's very nice of you! Cheers Johan
Cheap gear + fantastic skill= Good video
+JOHN VINTER Thanks my friend! Cheers
Tudo que você toca soa excelente. Parabéns. Um abraço do Brasil.
Everything sounds good in your hands! 😀
if it were a broomstick with strings on it and played through a 1968 bread toaster, you would definitely be able to get a good sound from it :-) After so many videos it is clear to me that it is 95% you who attributes to the super cool sound. The equipment doesn't matter that much anymore. Awsome Johan, just awsome. Keep 'up the good work Johan! We will keep on watching your cool videos and be inspired by them! :-)
+Kees Groen Hahaha! You make my day Kees :-) Cheers Johan
Nice playing Johan!
+Lee Morrison Thanks Lee!
Great tone on this rig.
+Tricko Thanks!
An alternate version of this would be interesting. Like playing this guitar through your usual amp setup, and playing the big guns (R9 , SG) through the Epi amp :D
+666rocky I'm gonna compare this Les Paul Special to some Gibsons on Monday. I'll play them through this amp and a Marshall stack then. Cheers
Awesome, thanks! Keep up the good work, this is one of my favourite channels on yt:)
Cheers!
+666rocky Thanks, I'm really glad to hear that :-)
Man, I guess you can make a chainsaw sound like a '59 Les Paul and Plexi.
Great as always!
Thanks my friend! ;-)
I always liked the unique tone of those bolt on neck les paul copies but they are rarely played professionally. However there is a guy from a band called Domadora who plays one through a Marshall Vintage Modern and it sounds pretty damn good
I'm primarily a bass player, but I bought an Epiphone Les Paul Special LTD used off the bay so I could play Tool riffs in drop D, and it sure does the job.
Yeah this guitar holds up surprisingly well to high end guitars
You my friend!you make this huge diference! Cheers jorge
+harleybrujo Cheers my friend!
Hey Johan, I love all your videos! Have you ever thought about doing an episode with a Kemper profiling amplifier? Would be really nice to see how the digital state of the art fares against the real deal amplifiers from the olden days.
+SoulProvider88 Thanks! Ive got one if those planned actually!
Those cheap soilid state Epiphone amps are a great bargan. I have one made back in the late 90's and it works great as a practice amp.
Hi very helpful video!!I am a beginner and i am thinking to buy this pack!Am i going to be able to practise slipknot-type songs or i need to buy a distortion pedal because the amp settings arent enough?
You can make even a shoebox sound good! Keep on rockin
*What chords do you play at **3:20** through to the end, I love that sound so much for some reason. I keep coming back to hear it but now I'm trying to save up so I can play. I may not understand the chords today but hopefully one day I will. It reminds me of a long day at highschool and I'm just casually walking home.*
I love my ephione special 2...I think these guitars play very well when set up right...
I just got this bundle in sunburst and I haven’t played in 20+ yrs (I didn’t play much as a teen and was mostly just playing a few notes of a riff here and there) and I’m loving this!!! Not sure how to set the knobs on the guitar and amp though? I want to have at least 3-sound profiles… Clean, classic rock and Metallica/GNR-ish, but I think I’m playing with my volume (could be the tone?) too high on the guitar and my amp volume is at about 2-3 when I have overdrive on. Maybe I should turn the amp volume up to a 5 like he had it… then start the guitar volume at 0 and work up from there? Any help would be greatly appreciated
You gotta give a track listing with this awesome demo.
Great consept Johan. You should definently test out some affordable gear. As well as the fabulous marshalls of course!
+Lars Sig Thanks, Yeah affordable gear that gets the job done is the most interesting.
When I first got mine in 2014, I managed to "break" the amp during the first year or so. And it sounded quite differently. Maybe the later revisions are of better quality than mine. The guitar itself was really badly set-up from the (chinese) factory and almost unplayable. I did a diy fret leveling job and I have gotten it to play fine. I just need to touch up on the higher frets to get rid of some buzzing. The pickups were kinda too hot for my taste and I installed some Vanson '57 paf styles. Now together with my Fender mustang 1 v2 amp it sounds much better.
Can you tell me what strings you have on the guitar? Would like to know since i've ordered this exact same pack
Sounds fine to be less than 200$....all that gear. Good demo ; )
Awesome video
Hello man! I'm buying the same Epiphone that u are playing in the video but without amp. I want to use Garage Band on my Mac as Amp. Do u think that the sound can be similar or the amp that you are using is better ?
You can make anything sound good. and I bet the neighbors didn't even know ya were playing. I might get the grandkid one so I can try it out. ; )
+demantoid Thanks :-) yeah this was at real bedroom volume level
I wonder if any amp can sound quite ok if it's played around their breaking point and any good amp sound quite dull if it's played "silent"? Can you please tell me what reverb you use in cubsasis and where you place the room mic? Thank you Johan.. always delivering!
+foden kano Thanks! I use the Standard Cubasis reverb 6% and 4.3s on the close mic. Room mic is 10 feet out set to Omni. Room mic panned almost hard right, close mic 80% left.
Can you try the squire bullet mustang with a cranked cheap amp?
Are you still giving two tickets to visit that city on left side? Man, I loved. It sounds like a fucking good playback. Rock´n´Roll!
Cheers Carlos! :-)
i got this pack for christams but i don’t really know what like settings to put it on so on the amp what do you put for like bass and stuff?
Hey man I don’t know if you ever play metal but do you think I could get a decent metal sound if I add a distortion pedal to this pack? I’m a beginner and don’t wanna break the bank on my learner setup.
Yeah I know that for a very long time . The tone is from your hands and yes we can notice a change in your overall tone but man you sounds really really good. The difference between a cheap guitar and a good one independent of the price is how easy can it be play. Your next step should be to try the Marshall MS4 one of the cheapest guitar amp or even the Vox that you plug directly to the guitar. Finally the gear is only one variable in the tone equation and the hands and the player are at least 90% of the result. Awesome playing as usual :)
+Sylvain Alain Thanks my friend! :-)
I completely agree
Hey i have a question how those 10 watts Epiphone amps are powered? Do you plug it or use batteries?
Please suggest which is better - Epiphone les Paul special ll/ Epiphone les Paul player pack/ Epiphone les Paul special Satin E1(I'm a beginner)
Reading through a Wikipedia style list online here... Seems the player pack ones with LE and LTD on the truss rod cover had Hard Maple necks. Les Paul Nightfall as well. Give that neck a stinger!
I actually have an epi jr with a Dimarzio super distortion in it. I set up the way I like it and it plays and sounds great. I'd recommend playing that epi through one of your grown up Amps to really make it shine. but overall you make it sound Good and for the price it's great. but again you seem to make everything sound good
+Dan Kiefert Thanks Dan :-) I'm gonna plug it into a Marshall stack on Monday and compare it to my SG. Cheers
Have a great weekend
i think the point of the video is to not get caught up in how much your gear costs,
just learn how to play the damned thing.this did sound like shit though honestly.
Anyone have any good amp/guitar settings for this combo for beginner? Looking for a classic rock sound and a GNR/Metallica-ish sound or as close to it as possible. I have my amp volume at like 2-3 but my guitar tone/volume maxed… don’t think that’s where this sweet spot with this combo is. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!! 🤘
For me the best beginner combo would be: Jackson JS32 Rhoads T (no Floyd because that would be a headache to beginners) a Boss Katana 50 and a Behringer Wah pedal. Not a beginner but that would be great due that the Katana effects are more than enough... that’ll be a great Thrash Metal Combo. If there’s a beginner out there who likes a lot any artist and they want to sound like their favorite guitarist but they don’t want to waste a lot of money please reply on my comment what artist you want to sound like. For example “Zakk Wylde” the Marshall Code 25, an Epiphone Les Paul Standard (Metallic Gold, Ebony or any other color, that won’t affect your tone) and a Behringer Wah or a Jim Dunlop Crybaby Mini.
SDMF James Hetfield?
SteveDiGiorgioOfficial Epiphone Explorer Goth, Marshall Code 25.
1:07 does that epic sound have a name? part of a known piece maybe?
Great pack
Thanks a lot sir for giving such a nice and rather CHEAP option for beginner who save their POCKET MONEY to buy a guitar
Play that guitar through one of the vintage Marshalls! There seems to be a half-decent midrange texture to it. It's no P.A.F.-loaded Les Paul, but I think it would sound kind of cool through a good amp. That player pack amp is hiding a lot of tone in that thing. Played through one of the vintage Marshalls, it might surprise you. ;)
+Eywadude I actually liked this guitar even unplugged, so it will be interesting to hear how it sounds through a plexi stack :-)
Nice to hear. I hope you post a video with it playing through one of the stacks at one point. I'll be looking forward to it if you do. Cheers. :)
Still sounds like Johan! hehehe I'm almost jealous of new guitarists, even $200 buys decent stuff these days
+sniff rat Yeah, when I was young entry level stuff sucked
Johan Segeborn tell it bro. I bought a fender MIJ strat for 900$ canadian dollars in 1986. the locking tremolo fell apart in months. I also had a traynor amp that picked up radio stations lol some people thought it was part of our gig. it wasnt. I bought a brand new classic vibe strat for 279$ threeyears ago. it is three times the guitar that MIJ was at one third the cost 30 yearslater ! young players have it so good today. peace
Wow! What a coincidence, my Traynor amp used to pick up Radio Moscow. I bought a Hohner strat copy for about $200 and it was made of laminate (basically plywood) but it was the best guitar for the money in 1984.
good player , you would make an ironing board sound great!
epiphone 10 watt amp vs fender frontman 10g?
What riff was you playing at roughly 1:15 ?
Great player and great micing...any just room audio?
+NYC LP Player Thanks! I'm using two mics, the room mic is 10 feet out and is set to omni. Cheers
Can this guitar play heavier stuff or.....
even without good filming equipment, you can make a great video
this tone reminds me Hubert Sumlin sound from howlin wolf records
Im gonna get one now
Sounds nice--I imagine the playability of the guitar is the biggest sacrifice of the low price?
+Kintrap Yeah, but this one was actually good enough. Didn't expect that
if it wasn't johan playing this little amp i would probably call this a fake... sounds astonishing good for such a small budget! how was the playability of the epi? i have played a lot of affordable but actually really solid guitars by now.
+Da Faq Thanks man :-) the guitar was surprisingly easy to play
This is great! I'll never buy fancy stuff again...
+NPGANDERSSON Thanks :-)
I have the same pack.
How did you get that guitar tone tho? What pedal are u using
I’m not using any pedal actually. You have play really soft on an amp like this and use the guitar volume and tone to compensate for harshness. Cheers
Please help me Can i play blues with this guitar or i need a squier or fender type ?
+Elias Music You can indeed!
Amazing tone.
Some people can plug into a Marshall Plexi with a custom shop Les Paul and still sound like dog.
And then you have Johan, he'll make anything sound good.
+Davy Coningx Thanks Davy! You make my day man :-)
Whats the song at 2:40 called?
How do black/silver face amps sound cranked? Do they drive as much as say a tweed bassman?
+froggatt24 They have more headroom than the tweeds! Cheers
Johan Segeborn yeah I was just checking out a demo of a vibrolux and it sounds like quite a thick drive suprisingly
What is your amp setting
Does it have kill switch?
Not a bad little package
+Glenn Nicolassy Thanks Glenn
I’m getting this in black and white maybe
Where can i buy this
whats the number of the sound on 1:32
Sister found this Ep amp at a pawn shop for 9 bucks and brought it over to me. Haven't tried it yet, but for 9 bucks... :)
I'm getting this pack in a couple days. It'll be my first guitar
+Austin Walker Cool! I think you'll like it.
Johan Segeborn how do you tune your guitars because I can not get this guitar to tune and I have the tuner that came with it
Austin Powers guitars have a bit of a break in. They will usually go out of tune 3 or 4 times before it stays in tune.
I just wanna know how can a human being dislike this video
+Felchenerow san Thanks my friend :-)
Judging by the EQ settings and the mic angle, that amp must be very bright.
The little amps, like this one or, for example, the Fender Frontman 15 are really bright, has poor bass sounds, and the distortion cranks at a low volume, but somehow Segeborn made it sound powerful.
+Sebastian Pantoja when recording into a mix, you have to cut all of the lows anyway to make room for bass instruments. extra top end is also more toneful harmonics which are a good thing as long as you can avoid fizz.
хорошее видео!
Can I ask you something?
nope. it's not in his hands. it's in his ears. I was so intimidated with all the gear this guy has but this video surely made it clear that the human is responsible for any greatness
It doesn't sound bad but I bet it will sound 10x times better if you hook one of those cabs in your back.
+tremolo3 Thanks, I suspect that too ;-)
Mine sounds nothing like that 😔
$?
how can you sound good with this? i saw a dude sound like crap with a gibson and a marshall jcm 800 and you can sound better with cheap gear. how this is possoble?
+Brayan Lopes Thanks! :-) Simplet amps require very soft playing to sound good, since they have very close to a bright and brittle breakup. Cheers Johan
Du har jättebra videor och måste bara älska göte-engelskan! :)
+Daniel Österberg Tackar så mycket! :-)
Can you sound like Metallica with this amp aswell?
While I agree tone is almost 50% of the hands (fite me), it cannot fix a tinny or thin sounding amp.
don't they say " tone is in the hands"?
+Alexander is Cheers man
