I LOVE this!. I was born with HIV seventeen years ago. Stigma is the biggest hurdle to conquering HIV. All of these wonderful people speaking up will help to squash stigma. Were all of the participants from the GTA? If so, I am too.

+Iggy Izzys I God wanted me dead, I'd be dead. God's plan for me was to educate others about HIV and AIDS and to decrease the stigma, help raise funds for a cure. I've was born to an HIV positive crack addict, exposed to alcohol in the womb, had my stroller hit by a car when I was two weeks old which resulted in a fractured skull and broken jaw, was in a coma for three and a half months and guess what? I'm still here. I'm happy, healthy and living my life to the fullest. Maybe God planned for you to come across this comment and speak to someone who would respond with kindness and a sincere hope to change your outlook. I hope you have a great day. Peace.

I am straight and tested positive for HIV in 2013 after mother's day, I was infected by blood transfusion at UCI hospital. Since 2015 I am undetectable from triumeq, when I got he news I broke down and cried, then telling my mom and she cried and I said happy mother's day. I had thoughts of suicide and the hard part of telling my friends and they said don't cry we have your back, well they lied to my face, they eventually turned their backs on me and don't want anything to do with me. Now they laugh at me and talk shit about me and their dad also, karma is a bitch
now I just stay to myself and I also never been in love, the stigma hurts, the way I handle my illness is I joke about it.... peace to all

It's no longer a death sentence, but it's still a great inconvenience. Not to mention the financial costs of treatment and medication.
Use protection, get tested, and remember that no amount of satisfaction and pleasure is worth risking HIV (or any STI) for the rest of your life. Do not lie about your status or lie about being tested. Do not tell your partner you are disease-free because you ASSUME you are. Be HONEST with your partner(s).

Getting tested for HIV will not keep you from getting HIV. Some people think they should be HIV+ to fit in with their friends. Don't go there. Being sick, taking medicine, facing rejection, telling your friends and family is not fun. It's a very heavy emotional burden that you bear until the end of your days.

Mike you always make videos about important social topics but this might be the most important one.
I'm from India and there is a huge population of Seropositive people in India... I remember hearing about it when i was in middle school in a very sad way.. people finding out they are positive and committing suicide because of the social stigma and the idea that there is no life ahead. during my medical school days, i saw widows of HIV positive men who were abandoned by families..suffering through no fault of their own...
Medicine has changed so much and the life expectancy has improved a lot... but society hasn't changed much because of lack of awareness... Thank you for playing a part in changing that.

I just discovered your channel and the first video i watched was this one. It is so informative and it humanizes the people living with HIV. I was diagnosed in the mid 80s and am still here doing fairly well. For me the stigma was almost worse than having the virus. I felt the need to always disclose anyone i had a date w and very often they said they had "something else to do". It took a while for me but I realized that I did not want start a friendship w anyone with so little compassion and so much ignorance. I was lucky, my family and friends were unfazed by it but not everyone experiences that. I have seen the family/friend/whatever rejection and how it impacts those who have the virus. It breaks my heart. I think people who find out they are HIV+ should prepare themselves emotionally and physically in case it does not go the way they had hoped.
Fantastic video! I am afraid that there is not enough information out there for people just to stumble upon. The folks in this video were very real, not scary people and it demonstrates that anyone can have this virus.
Thanks so much for the good work.

+Michael Rizzi This was a great video.. I lost my younger brother 5 years ago do to complications from HIV..
When he was told in hospital that he was positive, I yelled at him severely because he had previously told me about losing so many friends over the years..
I wanted to know why he didn't get tested..
His answer to me was that it had been 25 years since he had unprotected sex therefore he thought he was safe..
    But he wasn't..
25 years without knowing he had it, had caused him to develop a type of lung cancer which can be associated with the disease..
    He was 46 years old..
But because he taught me so much while he was here, I was able to be completely open for my eldest daughter when she told me she was gay and for my youngest daughter when she came out to me as bi..
I am so proud of the people in your video..
I truly hope they can stay strong, live their lives to the fullest and have much success and happiness in their lives.. 💙

All your material is good, but this is outstanding. As an older gay man (64), I really identified with the older fellow's story. While -- as far as I know I am Neg (I've been tested) -- the fact he's been living with this since 1983 hit home, because I was involved in the initial meetings to set up the Columbus (Ohio) AIDS Task Force in February 1983. One of the men was recently diagnosed, and someone picked up his pen that he had dropped and then kept it and then absent-mindedly placed it in his mouth while thinking about making a note about something. The effected man said: "Wait. We don't know if that places you in danger." And then we did not. Such is how far we have come. As an aside this positive man recently died after living almost 30 years with this virus. A true outlier -- but with the new drugs he will no longer be one. Still use a rubber and don't swallow -- as much fun that can be, unless you are damn certain about your partner.

It was at my town's clinic and I was only there for a refill on my asthma medication. They asked the usual questions (one of them asking if I was sexually active) and I said yes. So some way down the road I was asked did I want to take an HIV/AIDS test since the clinic gave them for free, I said ya and so it begun. I can't really say it was a long wait cause after talking to my doctor for about 20min it was over and found out my results were negative. It's a great thing knowing your status.

But. . . . .when people say "Stigma" what are the parameters of that? People wont sit next to you? They think they can get it by shaking your hand? What exactly defines stigma against HIV positive people. I am HIV negative. I believe in being very selective about my sex partners, using protection, and getting tested and having my partners get tested. I even have at home tests. . .the same tests used in the clinics. I just don't believe in taking Truvada or putting myself at risk to exposure to HIV by having sex with an HIV positive person. . . .protected or otherwise. Even if there is a 0.02% chance of getting it. . .I still don't want to take the risk. Is that stigma? I am often violently accused of it. If I refuse to have sex with a positive person. . .I am an ignorant, homophobic, self-loathing, uneducated, bigot who spreads Stigma instead of love!!! Take Truvada, they say, and put your mind at ease and open yourself up to more people! I don't want to be part of the Truvada bareback indiscriminate sex culture. I personally don't find this to be stigmatizing. Its my body, my health, my future, my choice. So were do we set the boundaries on what "stigma" is and isn't?

Hi. I was wondering if you don't mind what med are you taking and what are the side effects? I appreciate your help.

It's TRUE, people don't know , people don't say. Go get tested

So, the consensus to finding out you have HIV is that it's devestating (at first), especially because you naively thought it couldn't or wouldn't happen to you. Is my experience so rare? Sure, it's a life-changing experience, but I knew the risks I was taking and thus wasn't devestated to find out that I did have it. And I don't regret the choices I made that led to me getting HIV, either. As I mentioned, I knew the risks and I did what I could to mitigate them while still doing the things I love. I don't want to deny people their experience, but is mine really so rare? This isn't simply a critique of the video but rather the representation of it in media as a whole.

+Athari8178 To say that you have no regret for the choices you made that led up to your positive status, is really sad. It's okay to admit to having regrets in life; mistakes are to be learned from.

Tell me you've no regrets when you can barely breathe from pneumonia and your body is covered with nasty lesions.

Actually, I became undetectable 6 months after I was diagnosed with HIV and I've remained undetectable ever since. And my immune system has been recovering quite well, as well. But, thanks for the concern about my health.
