I appreciate and admire Gareth Thomas to come and talk about his own life experiences after his HIV diagnosis. I think it is really important for patients to talk about their experiences if they are comfortable enough because it can help other patients that have just gotten diagnosed or don’t know how to navigate the next steps. This deals with the ethics principle of respect for autonomy where we have intentionality and understanding of the patient and their needs. It is refreshing to know that there are many different outlets where patients can share their stories with their identity or anonymously. As a future healthcare provider, I think knowing what these outlets are for my patients can be super helpful for their medical journey. I wonder if there is a forum or somewhere like a database that can be used to refer patients.

I couldn't help but wonder what Gareth Thomas' former wife must feel when she hears him talk of his "husband". Is it necessary for him to say things that could make her feel betrayed... which arguably she was. Gareth did serious damage to this woman which should not be played down. To say "my partner" would, I think, be more appropriate.

I just got my diagnose yesterday and even my blood pressure went immediately down at the moment. I'm scared and I feel damaged, but I got the certainty of my status now and I've been counseled on the process I need to start from today, I am lucky that in my state I will get my HIV treatment and follow up completely free by public health insurance and this helps me not feel so insecure but the stigma is there, I'm afraid of talking to my family and my best friend about it.

Many people get HIV from their mothers, there some people that got the virus by blood transfusion... HIV isn't a punishment, HIV is a virus. Virus are natural. Unfortunately, they kill us, if we don't do the treatment.
