Sbiricuda: these lenses ain't exactly cheap price-wise however, when you think that at a flick of a switch you get another focal length and you see that you can sort of 'zoom in and out' keeping basically a prime lens then we've got something very very special from Nikon! Not to mention the optical qualities that are outstanding thanks to the Nikon's flange distance (the shortest among the tree big boys out there!).
Matt has got it right. When you are using a big prime, if a bird lands in front of you, you are out of luck which makes a high quality zoom lens very important for wildlife photography but so far the big boys are still making only expensive primes with the exception to Nikon which at least throw a TC in so that we have another option on the fly. I think OM system has got it right with the 150-400 f4.5 with a 1.25 TC built in. I hope the full frame companies will consider making something similar like previously the 200-400 f4 with a 1.4 TC but much lighter version.
WOW - never thought you'd turn out to be this good at bird photography - I belong to a number of bird 'tog & wild life groups, and these images are wild - far better than I see week after week, elsewhere!
Thanks a million... Always waiting for your content on new gear... Really aweaome... Though I was a little disappointed in the lens as you said it kept losing focus... I mean it's the best Nikon has to offer... Is this a pre production lens???
How is the image sharpness and focus speed of the 400 F2.8 TC with an extermal 2x teleconverter = 800mm compare to the 600 F4 TC with internal TC activated = 840mm
Nice video, but sadly, neither of these lenses will ever favour my Z bodies - well outside my price range. Thank goodness for the more affordable Z 100-400 and Z 800 PF lenses - both in my collection!
Have to say I wasn't at all blown away with the shots you got from the Z9 with these lens or the AF performance, would be interesrting to see them compared to say a D5/6 and the F mount version of these lens for the same shots.
Thanks Matt. Great info. I have a 600 f/4 ( which I think I’ll sell ) and the 800 pf for small wildlife. The 400 seems perfect for field sports. So I think I’ll go for that. Side note: have you found a way to live view tether your Z9? It’s becoming the bane of my existence. Not sure what it is about this camera that challenges the software out there. Thanks again
But it's also much more expensive than the Nikkor 800mm f/6.3, which itself makes the Z9 a compelling camera to buy even for someone who shoots with other systems.
@@shang-hsienyang1284 But the 2.8 Max aperture is what is most useful in the forests. You can't reduce the focal length of an 800 where as you can increase the length of a 400 or 600.
@@geofflongford2008 true, but the Nikon 400mm and 600mm primes are so expensive even compared to Sony and Canon's offering. It's definitely more convenient, but the US$2000 and US$2500 differences is too massive, especially when Nikon's internal teleconverter creates a slight green tint and no sharpness benefits compared to external storage teleconverter, as shown in Steve Perry's review. In comparison the 800mm f/6.3 is a huge bargain (as long as it's in stock) and any wildlife photographer with the budget should give it a try.
@@bngr_bngr Sony and nikon have the most modern af motor tech in their lenses but I doubt there’s a noticeable difference with af speed. I haven’t noticed any speed differences in use of RF 400, Z 400 and Sony 600.
LOL. Bokeh is awful. Hardly any of the shots are in focus, or tack sharp. Colors look like Canon --- not a positive comment. Contrast is poor. If you told me you took those photos with a $100 kit lens, I would believe you. Nikon has lost their ability to produce superb glass, which is the only thing they were superior at.
That’s what my Nikon Z9 doing after 100 shots. Monitor is blinking .Nikon service keep it for one month and try to charge me for monitor replacement. The pictures looks the same as my screenshot. I send it back to Nikon and can’t get information what’s wrong with it. The camera has warranty. I don’t know what to do in this situation? I called many times to Nikon and spoke to many service advisors and supervisors, but I can’t get answer what’s wrong with it or when it’s goin to be ready.🫣🫣

Already exists. Iv had the Nikon 180-400 f4 TC for some time now and its incredible. $12k new though.
The boekeh is amazing even in f/4 . the telecompression works nicely

Big fan of your super telephoto content. 99% of what I photograph is wildlife. Very interesting to see what is available.

I know its hard, a lot of people are in the same situation. On the other side, there is possibility to buy a different system and wait for Nikon
Now we are talking my language: 600mm and Hustle music to start the video. SWEET.
Thanks
Thank you for your thoughts. Which one did you buy?
Me? Neither.
Thanks Matt great review. If you get a chance can you review the Nikkor 200 f2 F mount lens on the Z9 please.
I have already, and I’m including it in the big take showdown video coming soon 👍🏼
Good stuff can't wait
@mattgranger so it seems you prefer the 400 over the 600?
I would rather use 400mm f/2.8 lens for birding and go after that tripod with more lens speed Then you can crop the picture afterwards
400mm 2.8 would be awesome for wildlife in the rainforest or forest environment and with a 2x for stuff like waterbirds etc. 800 5.6 is pretty useful
But it's also much more expensive than the Nikkor 800mm f/6.3, which itself makes the Z9 a compelling camera to buy even for someone who shoots with other systems.

I don't know. For me I only shoot sports with zoom lenses. I'd gladly sacrifice 1~1.5 stop s of light than cropping the head or limbs.
Would love to see a Canon, Sony, and Nikon shoot out with the 400/2.8 & 600/4.0.
All would be as close to optical perfection as cam be and only differentiation would be the built in TC

im on the waiting list for the 400...since launch day...are these selling as strong as the Z9 was? what's taking so long?
I don’t have that info, but I assume production volume is much lower
