- Guitar tutorial for Incubus - Priceless
My cover for this song can be found here: • Incubus - PRICELESS (g...
Not the easiest song to play and even harder to break down some sections of this track! I have done my best to demonstrate each section for you so that you can play along at home too.
Mike's playing and writing really was great on ACLOTM 😁
Any questions, ask away in the comments and I hope you enjoy this guitar lesson!

Crazy how Mike comes up with these riffs and on top of that, the effects arrangements to go with it. Nice job!
Thank you! I think Ben coming into the band had a big influence on Mike at this time and he totally re thought how to write his riffs. Turned into one killer album 😁🤘🏻
@@Fitzgerd Definitely. Ben's approach to bass is very guitar-ish, (if that makes sense) so, the guitar is forced to give us something "special". At least that's how I like to think about it.
@@alfredopadronnanez3804 that’s a great way of looking at it 👍🏻👍🏻
Yeah, this is going to take me a while to learn, I always remember the solo to this on the red rocks DVD back in the day and thinking it was absolutely impossible! Top work with this!!
Thanks Luke! Believe me, if I can do it, you can too 👍🏻. I spent a long time practicing this, especially for the cover. I probably should have spent more time practicing it before recording the tutorial but hey ho 😅. My best advice would be to break it into smaller chunks and work on each bit individually. Some will be easier than others so once they become clear, focus on the toughest parts. Get the pattern slowly and then start building the speed. When you try to play faster, the key is to keep as relaxed as you can and really pay attention to this. If you start to tense up or stop breathing etc, stop and try again being as calm as possible. It really works wonders! Enjoy learning this one, it feels great when you nail it 😊🤘🏻
Thanks!
Thanks so much to you Evan! 😊👍🏻
Thx 🎉
No problem 😊👍🏻
Thanks for this, Nick! I really appreciate your level of production, clarity, and ability. It makes me wish someone would make similar videos of your caliber for some of Ben's bass lines!
Thank you, really appreciate those kind words and hey maybe I’ll have to take up that mantle and dust off my bass 😉😁
Awesome! What thickness of guitar pick do you usually use?
Thank you! I use Dunlop Jazz III which are 1.38mm I believe so quite thick 😁

The whole “is it major or minor” thing in the breakdown is a doozy. I tend to think the minor sounds closer, but then that could be because the main riff of the song is based on the minor third with a tritone over it, so my ear “wants to” hear the breakdown as minor, too. Also part of the problem for me is the overall mix/EQ of both the bass and the guitar, and how the bass part throughout the song contains some double stops (and Ben in general is a very chord-oriented bass player). I wonder if they didn’t purposely build a Major/Minor chord in that section this way.
Spot on! I used to play the minor version for the same reason - it harks back to the main riff and seemed to make sense in my head, until I tried recording the track and it didn’t seem to fit! Scoured through some old live footage and the best guess was a major inversion instead (at least that’s what it looks like on the Alive at Red Rocks version!) and that seemed to fit better with everything else that’s going on. I still go back and forth though and would need the man himself to clear it up for us all 😅😂👍🏻
