I did SAR with K9s for 10 years. It takes a LOT of work to get a dog trained to this level, and few dogs are cut out for it, but it really is amazing to see them use their nose. For the advanced dogs, we would train by trailing 1 person through a Costco and by doing a 24 hr aged scent trail in the desert. If you’re lost, there’s dogs like this that will be looking for you.

I lost a dog's scent once; doing the opposite of what this guy did absolutely WRONG. You are supposed to go DOWNSTREAM, not UPstream. If you go UPstream, the scent follows you and is carried down to where the dog is. Go downstream a ways and then get off the stream (down wind side) so the stream keeps carrying the scent away. You get out on the down wind side because the secent will be carried downwind all the way down the stream anyway, providing no additional variable for the scent but to keep going downstream.

My takeaway is the strategy that might works is a combination of elevation change and a false trail. Get to a place where you can jump down, lay a false trail and then back track and jump down. The handler won't be able to easily pinpoint where false trail splits from the real one and identify the jump spot. Even better use a place that is windy so that the scent is all over the place. I'm actually curious if it would throw a trained dog off the scent.

If you think of it like colour it really isn't too mind-boggling
I think of it as if (with the one where a bunch of people have their scent on one article) there being 12 colours of paint on one tissue, and trails with that colour all over the place.
I think dogs' sense of smell is as useful to them (if not more) as our sight is to us, so following a scent trail is as easy as following a trail of spilled paint!

One of the big differences between a bloodhound and a German Shepherd or other similar breed is that the bloodhound sniffs the ground and follows the scent on the ground which is why they have a hard time when a person goes through water vs German Shepherds and similar breads which use the open air to find their target. Your scent sticks around for something near 72 hours on a calm day. Air sniffing dogs trained for search and rescue are not usually trained to find a specific persons scent. A police dog would be, but not most SAR dogs as they search for any victims. Some are also trained specifically to find dead things such as dead people for recovery operations in which case they can even find the smell of blood in a drain that has been washed many times, sometimes even with chemicals.

I think it might have to do with more. I think the dog might be going off of the whole scent, and not just the pure scent of his body. The scent of the clothes he was wearing that have their own scents on them from whatever they've been near combined with his natural body scent makes a pretty unique signature to follow, so you can't just throw the dog off by leaving some BO somewhere, you need the "whole" smell.

Did you hear about the 4 children that were lost for 40 days in Colombia after that little plane crashed? One of the SAR dogs was lost :( I'm glad the children were found but am very sad about the dog.

TIL Bloodhounds are just a result of great branding. Awesome video as always.

Seeing Adam just show up in people's videos is great. I remember he showed up on Veritasium a couple times. Great guy with excellent on-camera (and probably off-camera) energy.

Shay and Zinca are absolutely incredible and the time and effort they give to help families searching for their loved ones is admirable. Thank you for volunteering!

It was really impressive to me how Zinca actually decided to not agree with Shay's urge to turn her around, following Shay for a few seconds before stopping again and then turning back around. With how she trusted her for a moment, though, shows how trusting Shay and Zinca are with each other as they work hand in hand.

I am not sure if you honestly thought you would be able to mess with a K9/Human search team.
    Great video.

I love ❤️ how Shay gives Zinka a lot of slack. Like eating the snacks is not what a puppy trainer would allow. But Zinka is a PRO so she can apparently be given respectful autonomy.

And she knows that Mark wouldn't be putting poison in the food, like crims being hunted might do.
PS: I thought she snickered at the food trap though, lol.

I think it's also because this is not a crisis situation. Otherwise she would not be getting that slack.

Zinka seemed so happy to find him
    Wagging her tail
It's why sometimes retired dogs need to go out and do training stuff like this so they know they are still the best of boy ☺️
