"Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme" is one of six Schübler chorales by Bach. It is also known as "Sleepers, Awake!". It is a personal favorite of mine, and I'm thrilled to have it worked up and recorded.
Ton Koopman's recording was a source of inspiration for me, a fact that is evident in my tempo and ornamentation. It is often performed at a slower tempo, which I enjoy very much. However, the faster tempo gives the piece a cheerful, bright sound that I just couldn't resist.
The choice of instrument was a no-brainer in this case. The Bovenkerk Hinsz organ by Milan Digital Audio renders this piece perfectly with its clear flutes, baroque reeds, and lush acoustic.
Borstwerk: Fluit B/D 4
Bovenwerk 1: Roerfluit 8, Fluit 4, Nassat 1 1/2
Hoofdwerk: Trompet 8
Pedaal: Subbas 16, Octaaf 8, Borstwerk-Pedaal
BACH !!! !!! Tepper Michael.
This is one of the best performances I have heard! Wonderful articulation! Everything in this is just spot on.Love Koopman's performance and glad to see one modeled after his. This tempo is very logical. Any slower and the tenors could not sing the chorale and the strings would run out of bow. Well done!
Halden T. I love the way he plays sleepers awake, I've always love this music every since I was a kid
Excellent performance.
Tout est parfait, l'image, le son! Merci beaucoup!
I listen for it almost everyday, it´s sounds organic and brings to me highst inspirations,
very beautiful, thanks Bach and Stefanussen!
This is my favorite Bach chorale...and this version I find myself coming back to most often when I'm on RUclips. The tempo is great!
Tepper Michael.
I'm shocked !!! I never heard such an organist !!! This is something incredible, but it's a fact !!! I hear for the first time the True J.S. BACH !!! And this is thanks to him, Rob Stefanussen !!! Tepper Michael.
Wow! My favorite composer! Bach's music is truly a gift from heaven! And you played it so beautifully! I am so glad! May God bless you and your loved ones!
Incredible musician! Beautiful editing! Anyone who plays can only marvel at the way he dances across the pedals!
Jacques.
Very beautifully performed music by Bach. I love it.
The sound of this recording is absolutely astounding. So rich and perfect.
superbe interprétation, claire nette, phrasé parfait
Merci beaucoup
Hats off to you, Sir. This is the finest performance of this work I've ever heard. I love your warm colorful registration and tempo.
I too like your interpretation Bravo!!!!!
You are the only person I have subscribed to, rather the only people worthy of a subscription! You have made the organ my favorite instrument!
This is a festive piece of music, often played in churches in the week after Easter. I think this is exactly the right tempo for the piece, and it is played with superb confidence.
Anything but festive! It is a calm, reflective piece.
Anything but festive!. Noel Rawsthorne's Aria is a quiet, reflective piece.
no. this piece is fur advent
translated means "awake the voice is calling us
I remember & like this piece played more calmly and majestically; not skipping along merrily.
Quelle belle interprétation
Merci pour ce beau moment
This is one of my favourite renditions of this piece
I am in love with this piece .... and again it is Bach .. he is truely the master ...
wonderfull playing sir !
I think Rob does a great job with this. If you don't like the tempo, learn to play it yourself at whatever tempo you like.
In my opinion, he plays it convincingly and that's why it works as well as it does.
Perfect performing to start the day of beginning the night
What talent! Just wonderful.
Really enjoyed this interpretation! Thank you for sharing. The video work is also excellent!
I agree -- the camera work is fantastic! Very professional. And your playing is always so graceful and lyrical. Thank you for bringing some sunshine to a gloomy Monday morning!
Rob....I always enjoy listen to you play. It always seems crisp, clean (great keyboard technique). Most of all, you seem to be really enjoying the music you are playing. I consider you right up there with the best of them. Thank you so much for sharing too. Charlie
Masterful interpretation
A great performance! Just the right tempo. Bravo, Rob!
Well of COURSE this is the right tempo. It DANCES. The contours of the figurations and the implied short phrasings demand it. The trouble is very few players are capable of executing the intricacies so clearly and confidently at this sprightly pace. Makes other players sound lugubrious in comparison.
Who IS the organist? He's a terrific player.
The sound of this simulation of a pipe organ is very good. I imagine Bach, himself, might have liked it.
Elegantly and masterfully performed. I do love the registrations you have chosen for this iconic work. I was a tad surprised at the tempo, but fully approve it. Thank you for this work.
That is awesome. what a talented guy and what a beautiful piece of music
Excellent rendering of this wonderful piece. We had it at our wedding during the signing of the register and it's always been a great favourite of mine. Love your PIP video as well as your playing. Thanks!
Superb! Love the tempo and the thoughtful ornamentation. Thank you.
Excellent, love the registrations used.
Absolutely Marvellous. I love this piece
So Fantastic!!!! I love it! : ) As a church organist myself, this is one of my absolute favourites, simple fantastic!!! Even though this is played with Hauptwerk, the sound of the Hinsz is fantastic.
Excellent video and interpretation!!!!
@giovdan Thanks Giovanni. Some people really like the faster tempo while some prefer a slower tempo. I knew it was a gamble! Thanks for the kind remark regarding the video.
thoroughly enjoyable and immensely enjoyed
Bravo Rob! One day I will play like you do.
The proof (if needed) that a VPO can allow a great musicallity!
Wunderbar (should say "wunderBach...).
Cool setup & performance!
fantastic
I like the fact that you play it slightly faster than the "standard" way. My compliments... I am fishing out all the movies I can find on youtube where you play this amazing virtual instruments. I also have hauptwerk, but I stick with the free organ that come with it... its better than what I have to my disposal in the town where I live... at least a decent 16' pedal reed! Anyways, I love your playing, its marvellous.
Bravo à lui, Rob Stefanussen !!! Tepper Michael.
magnifique intéprétation et registration fidèle
Sehr gut!
Rob,
A new performance by you! Again, I love to watch your hands and feet, such economy of movement. I will use your example as what to strive for. Beautiful playing and registration. The Hinsz is an interesting sample set. With your resources of samples, it would be fun to take a selection and perform it on different sample sets and then edit that group together to contrast instruments. I think an interesting concept for us orgeeks! Thanks to Jasmine for her efforts.
Excellent! I got into Hauptwerk virtual organ recently and I am thrilled of its potential! I liked your interpretation, through I prefer it on a slightly lower tempo! Well done!
Very nice and enjoyable to listen to,,, as always.
Very music and the Spoken Word
You sound like a professional, and the sound of your organ is very beautiful! Your ornaments are excellent, too! If you ever come to Norway, please let me know!
Fantastic
@gerardesberg The exact registration can be found in the description.
It's basically flutes 8', 4', 1-1/3' in the right hand, trumpet 8' in the left hand, and flutes 16', 4' + principal 8' in the pedal.
Beautiful!
Amazing and awesome!
Danke! Liebe Gruesse an die Familie!
Ordinarily, I abhor the tempos that are so quick, much preferring my own much more serecording made with a constant-drag device I designed for playing vinyl records. But, your rendition stands out, as it has not lost/smeared the solemn essence I find within the overall structure,...
only presented it more alacrtiiously.
BRAVO!!
VERY WELL DONE!!
Best Esecution to ever ❤😊
Absolutely Perfect! Absolutely Perfect!!
it's beautiful music .
Hi Pat, the lamp is an IKEA lamp, and it has a little clamp that clamps onto the back of the music rack.
hI MUSIC Rob, ALWAYS GOOD TO EAR yOU, A GOOD ORGANIST FRIENDLY jACQUES
Bach works BWV 1 to 224 are cantatas, Bach transcribed the 4th movement of cantata BWV 140 to the pipe organ labeled BWV 645, hope this helps.
WONDERFUL !!!
Very nice!
Thanks very good!
I like Hauptwerk.
Now this really wakes me up. :) Lovely!
wonderful !
nice editing!
First-rate, as always. Thank you. I notice your videos have become much more professional.
Tempo is perfect! Neat, articulation perfect and great performance overall. You always are dressed up for these - nice - maybe Jasmin's idea? Jasmin does a great job with the camera work!!
Interesting to hear that, because I always thought that it was a bit loud in some other recordings. Contrast is critical, but too much contrast can spoil the counterpoint. I personally thought the contrast between the Rugwerk and the Hoofdwerk was just right, which is one of the reasons I picked the Hinsz.
An excellent tempo, exceeding well played.
Wait for the melody to come in with the left hand and then sing along with it. Anyone who thinks this is too fast must not know the tune, and should listen to the chorales within that cantata of the same name, BWV 120, particularly to the recording conducted by John Eliot Gardiner. Sir John does not let this melody, which is by nature joyous, be dragged down to the hyper-romanticized moribund, which the dozing seem to expect.
140?
In this speed, the music makes me think of splendid angels overseeing the creation of a solar system, its blazing newborn sun, and its planets, some of which become filled with life.
Bach actually played it at the exact tempo.
BRAVO!
@rttipton There's just something about the black and white of a suit that matches the organ nicely. :-)
I like this song.
I like It! - Awesome Stuff!!
Very nice! I'll bet Old Man Bach would've enjoyed having one of these (Well, if he'd had access to electricity!)
The sound and tonal quality of this hand built ORGAN is amazing. I listen to the bass on the pedal stops and it is tremendous. The Organist, and builder has done a fine job. I put this you tube on auto and listen all day. What a joy and delight...thanks for posting Rob Stefanussen. Where are you and this hand made ORGAN located?
Loving the pace.........Shame about the instrument: Give me this piece played on an ahem, PROPER pipe organ - Simply delightful - But thank you for your post.
Fantastic ❣❣❣
Ah now that is counterpoint in its purest form
Lovely....!!
How could you possibly know for sure what tempo Bach wanted? We can only make educated guesses at best. Unless you were there, certain knowledge is unattainable, and even if it were, we'd still have to allow for a broad range of interpretation. There is no ONE way to perform ANY composition. The "traditional" tempo makes it sound LUGUBRIOUS. What Mr. Stefanussen has accomplished is tremendously persuasive -- not because it is "fast," but because it is so finely detailed and inflected.
@Gspijkenisse ,
usuallly, theres a rule: If you´ve got two lines of music, you´ll always play the bottom note of the left hand (i.e. the treble-clef) with the pedal.
This also means that you wont need to play that particular note with your hands...
@tshreenan Thanks, this piece has always sounded like "sunshine" to me. One of the reasons I enjoy it so much!
Rob...... where is your music lamp base sitting? As I put my system together, i don't see a ledge of sorts or clear place to position the lamp to read the music.
Thanks for the continued wonderful music you share with us!
Pat
@gerardesberg
