It's also amazing how the Big Name Artists had no problem turning out three or more albums a year - then going on tour, giving live performances night after night, month after month. AMAZINGLY Petula did not have anytime what so ever to rehearse this for the Ed Sullivan Show.
It had taken her forty five minutes from getting off the airplane and getting into a car to take her directly to the studio.
She then went on the show and sang "I Know A Place" TOTALLY live as if she had been there all day.
With no time for any rehearsals I imagine that is why the band were slightly out of step with Petula's unmatchable vocals.
Petula Clark gave a masterclass in how to deliver a BRILLIANT and AWESOME song (Thanks once again to musical genius Tony Hatch) like no other artist could.

She was such a professional, that if the band hadn't slowed down, she would have adjusted to them. Nowadays, many performers would probably throw a hissy fit and walk off-stage.

Ed had a full timed rehearsal with an audience at 1 PM on Sundays. Apparently Petula had flown in from Paris and just barely made the rehearsal. Same thing happened with the orchestra and Petula stopped the song... unheard of then. For the Live show, she let the orchestra reset itself.

@@mthivier Nowadays the band performs to a click track or an electronic beat, even with a live drummer so they have to follow the beat. Im not sure if so could have sung any faster.

Her "Downtown" album was the very first album I ever bought & "I Know a Place" was the very first piece of piano sheet music I ever bought. Thank goodness I have her music on CDs now. Still love listening to her and we finally got to see her in concert in 2007!
