- Rode VideoMic Me-L Review Test and Comparison To The Shure MV88 iOS Lightning Microphone
Good: The microphone sounds good which is the main thing you want out of any mic.
Good: The Mic ME-L comes with a deadcat wind muff so you don't have to buy one separately.
Good: The Rode Mic ME-L is inexpensive as far as quality mics are concerned. At $79.99 its priced to be affordable to all iPhone and iPad users.
Bad: The levels on the mic are really quite low and if you are recording with an app that doesn't allow you to adjust the gain you will have to raise the levels in post when editing.
Bad: You need that wind muff on the mic at all times because even the slightest wind noise without it is amplified and will ruin your audio.

The difference in volume levels is astonishing. I wouldn't even consider the Rode after that. Thanks for the video. :)
Yeah the Shure Mic is so much better. Thanks for watching.
Money plays...check the price difference of both....
Yes there is a significant difference in price.
Surprisingly there aren't many videos comparing these two. Thanks for helping me make my decision! Going with the rode even if the MV88 sounds better and has a smaller form factor. The price difference is way too high here in Canada to justify the slight improvements.
I understand. Thanks for watching and please subscribe.
@@TodayIFeelLike The Shure is a stereo mic isn't it? That might be why people don't really compare the two. One is a shotgun, one is stereo, so typically you use them for very different purposes.
Maybe but I compared them as vlogging and RUclipsr mics.
The Shure had nicer audio output but the audio distortion if you were to go live sucks. Other then that, the rode does its job. Great review and thanks so much. Video quality is amazing.
Yes I agree. The new Shure MV88+ has shielding so you can go live.
Wow the shure sounds incredible! This was really helpful, thanks!
No problem thanks for watching
Both great mics. Seems like the rode picks up what it’s pointing directly at which I’ve loved about shotgun mics. The Shure sure does have a better audio quality though. I do a lot of on the go filming so I’m leaning toward the Shure due to its smaller profile, and as you said, it’s not as obvious. New sub
The Shure is great go for it.
The audio coming from the Rode is clear and nice but very quiet. The shure one sounds very good though! Almost like a professional radio show or something. Thank you for the video! Very enlightening. 🙂
Yeah I really like the Shure it sounds so good. Thanks for the comment and for watching. Please subscribe and have a great weekend.
This actually helped me how to use the rode microphone and I am actually going to give my mom or dad $1 so they can buy me it I’m going to subscribe😀
Thanks for watching and for the awesome comment. Also thanks for sub I really appreciate that.
Just found this video and I want to say thanks for the review! I have been going back and forth on which mic to get.
Amazing video and quality. You definitely deserve more subs than you have! :D
Thank you I’m working on it. It’s a new channel so it will take time to grow. But please sub and share to help me grow. Thanks for watching and for the awesome comment.
@@TodayIFeelLike No problem man! Already subbed ;) You're doing a great job.

Thanks for this review! Did not know about the interference from cellular signal. This was a huge help for my intended use.

Wow! The audio from the Shure sounded SO much better!
Yeah I thought so too. I really like the Shure. Thanks for watching and please subscribe.
Thanks Larry. Given that this kind of microphones have directional features it would be great to compare them on a noisy field that is outdoor in a trafficated street or in a mall.... could you please do and share such kind of test in the future? Thanks!
Sure no problem I'll work on a video like that soon. Thanks for the idea and the feedback. Thanks for watching and please subscribe.
Subscribed! 👍
Hey nice review. I think the Shure sounds a bit clearer than the Rode, but the phone by itself was also pretty good. Also, great job on the overhead shots. Appears to be a 2 camera shot, but your overhead rig is completely invisible in your head shots. Love to know what your setup for that looks like. New sub here too! 👍
Thanks I appreciate that you appreciate my overhead shot. I think I might make a video about the setup. What do you think about that? Thanks for watching and for the sub.
@@TodayIFeelLike Do it. I think that's a great idea. I think it will definitely bring views. The OH shot is getting pretty popular and I know I like to watch vids about different setups.
The Sure is the way to go. I am buying one.
It's definitely sounds good to me too.
Thanks for the suggestion! I found this review you did watching now!
The little clip might fit on a tripod cell phone mount...Possibly, would be cool if it did!
Omgggg I was waiting for you to take the windshield off the rode😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 ahhhhhhhh, quality review 😙🤌🏼
That mic sucks without the deadcat and is basically unusable if there is even the slightest of wind.
shure is the clear winner. i wasn't gonna drop that kinda money but after hearing the quality difference i can tell that i won't have to upgrade that any time soon.
Yeah the Shure sound the best.
Hello! Nice comparison! I would really appreciate if you could help me by telling the name of that iPhone vlogging stand/handle aswell the name of the external light. :) Thank you!
Great comparison. Thank you for this! Looking for a Microphone for my iPad Pro on the go Music Production Sample needs :)
Oh you will love this then. Check it out.
Buen video. Felicitaciones. En la comparativa note más level noise en el rode. Ambos son muy buenos igual
Rode has the cleanest sound. A little bit quiet tho - I hope post-production can solve it.
You can do almost anything in post but for those editing on their phone without much experience the low levels are a problem.
Yeah it seems like everyone in these comments is praising the Shure even though you can hear way more of the room with it, it does seem to be the louder of the two. As you point out the Rode seems much cleaner, albeit quieter. The other thing that this review doesn’t touch on is that the Shure has an app that I believe let’s you modify the pick-up pattern, so I wonder if that might make a difference here. Kind of a tough call as they have different unique features and price points. For 130-150 you get the Shure which is smaller and louder with more directional adjustments, but no headphone monitor option. It also comes with a carrying case which is kinda nice. Then for $80 you get the Rode which seems cleaner but quieter, no directional adjustments but you do get headphone monitoring. It also comes with the wind screen when Shure charges an extra 40 for theirs (though it does come with a pop filter). I really wish I knew more about the Shure app as that might help in determining which is the better value.
What do you want to know about the Shure app maybe I can help.
The Shure MV88 is awesome in comparison to the RODE, isn't it?
Sure sounds stronger but not for me at the price. I would go for the rode
Yeah there is definitely a big price gap.
Thanks for posting, just what I needed. I'm torn between the Rode Me-l and the Shure MV88. I just got a iPhone 11 and need a good directional mic that can best catch sound from 8-15 feet away. Looks from the reviews I've seen that the Rode would be best strictly for longer distance than the Shure. Up close and personal, either mic will do just fine. Pls share your experience with catching sound from the middle distance.
It depends on what your are filming if you are filming a voice I wouldn't use either I would get a wireless mic like the Saramonic Blink 500
Thanks for the video. I just went and got one from Best buy today.
Cool test it out and let me know what you think about it.
Thanks for this video. I am in desperate need of a microphone for my iPhone. My last few videos sound quality is really bad. I am leaning towards the MV88. Although it is more expensive and i am a broke student !! maybe a Christmas present ~~
The MV88 is awesome but if you can get the MV88+ because it's shielded and you can use it while live streaming and generally with your cellular on. With original MV88 your have to shoot in Airplane Mode or you can get interference. Thanks for watching and please subscribe.
@@TodayIFeelLike Thanks for the suggestion. I will see if I can find the MV88+ in Canada
Does the Rode mic have any interference/static issues when you're using cellular data on the iPhone? ie do you have to put the phone into airplane mode with the Rode attached?
I'm going to say no but I have had some interference but I think it was something else when it happened because I almost never put my phone in airplane mode when using that mic and it seems to work fine almost all of the time.
The RODE Videomic is way to silent for me. While this is no problem in Postproduction you 'll have trouble filming directly in TikTok or streaming live.
I hope Rode comes out with and updated version that’s more sensitive.
TodayIFeelLike i don't think so because the rode is "just a microphone" w/o any preamp. That is why its so small and does not need / do not have an settings app....
I hope they do something.
Nice video thanks Larry like always thumbs up 👍👍👍
Thank you I really appreciate it.
I think that you should have removed the dead cat to get a better idea of sound I would only use that outside for wind noise thanks for Review I just bought this and was stumped about the clip there are no instructions with it to speak of
I have used it without the deadcat and even the slightest wind will affect the audio with this mic so I just leave it on.
Yes you are right about the instructions or lack there of. They should at least give out a link to an instructional video. Thanks for watching and please subscribe.
Thank you for taking the time to make this video.
I want to play guitar and sing song together.... which microphone will Best for my iPhone 11?
I would go with the Shure MV88
Bought the Shure MV88 + and it issue wasn’t the mic but the gimbal... if you’re are going for quality audio you are probable going for quality camera movement.. too!
The Osmo Mobile 2 was NOT strong enough to tolerate the cable to the mic destabilizing the smartphone camera...
The Zhiyun Smooth has motors strong enough to attach the lighting cable and keep the camera moving smoothly.
Bottomline: the mic sure could use a lighter weight and/or more flexible connection cable to allow the camera to be “gimbled”
That's really interesting I do have to say that when I use a gimbal generally I'm shooting b-roll or if I'm recording audio I usually record my audio separately because there's so many issues with gimbals and balancing and the weight I just find it much easier to record my audio separately and sync it later in post. I know that's not a option for everyone or even the best solution for everyone but it seems to be what causes me the least amount of headache. The one exception to this is when I'm vlogging with my osmo pocket then I hook up a little microphone but that's about it. Thank you for watching and for the comment and please subscribe.
Agree! If I really want clean audio I would not use anything on smartphone/gimbal/mic for anything but a baseline to sync to...
I’d record with lavs on it Zoom H6 and sync.
And - I having got my iPhone 11 yet - but - as good as these camera/phones are getting I’m still thinking of them as B-Roll and BTS and shoot primary on my Nikon Z6 system...
But I’m thinking the smartphone on a gimbal is going to become far more common as the aesthetic of RUclips is ever smoother motion to match everyone else...
Check out this video with the Edutige EIM mics they are super small and light and even though in this video you’re not doing the best that the mics can do because I’m showing what they sound like straight out of the camera with no adjustment you can get an idea of what they look like and the size and the weight and you can decide how much postproduction tweaking you wanna do to them.
ruclips.net/video/0fCIIsUzAkc/видео.html
Will do! I’m currently creating a video of a play I produced in NYC a couple years ago and I am playing with a mix of audio (along with LEDs and the Z6 system when they finally deliver ProRes RAW) which have as many as a dozen characters on stage by the Grand Finale and I’m not sure what the final result will be as I develop my workflow along the lines of a classic BBC Masterpiece production of the 1980s where it is obvious that the set is in a theatre and the lighting and acting is highly stylized to invoke the 1700s:

Cool vid. Would have been better to have the various recordings cut side by side without cut scenes to better contrast the sound Quilty though.
Thanks for the feedback I keep that in mind for future videos
Welcome. Keep up the good work.
I purchased a Rode Mic Me-L. One word: AMAZING! I even made a video reviewing it although my channel is all about teaching English! That’s how much I loved it 😅
Does it sound better than the iPhone 10 or 11 built in mic?
@@derekkelly485 Hey! To be honest, I haven’t tried it on an iPhone 10/11 yet. I used an iPhone 8 whilst testing it. I’ll try it on an iPhone 10 and let you know 😊
Great comparison. In this I think the shure sounds a little better. Thanks!
Yeah I really like the way the Shure sounds it really has a warm rich tone to it. Thanks for watching and please subscribe.
You shouldn’t have the dead cat on because it mainly for wind. Where the Shure had a pop filter that allows more sound through.
If you even breath on this mic without a dead cat it sounds like you are on a wind farm.
Unlike a vocalist mic you or whoever you’re recording shouldn’t be close enough to breathe on😁
Hahaha I hear you I guess I was trying to make the point that is mic seems to be much more susceptible to wind noise than other microphones that I’ve used.
TodayIFeelLike I hear you! I use IQBUDS Boost. Could you imagine those with a dead cat on your ears😃
I have the ME- L. I use the deadcat outside it works great but when I’m inside I just use the mic alone. I love it because it just picks up what’s in front of it so I don’t get all of that hissing. I do think the shure sounds better but with a few audio adjustments the rode is great.
Thanks for the video.
All the best !!
Thank you 😀
Thanks for the demo. I notice the bottom is an open design to fit the Sure mic. What iphone case are you using?
Excellent video! I kind of wish I had seen it before purchasing the Shure, though I do like the way that mic sounds here. Questions: 1) Does the MV88 work for video (iPhone or Filmic) if you don't use the Motiv app? 2) I didn't quite get why the phone has to be in Airplane mode. Please explain. 3) Can you get true stereo imaging with the Shure? When it's plugged in and turned forward, L and R are either on the top or the bottom, respectively, rather than left and right. How the heck does that work for stereo sound? Thanks! (I'm new to all of this, obviously...)
1) Yes the Shure MV88 works in any video app. And once you set the settings in the Shure app it retains the settings and takes it over into the Camera app or FiLMiC Pro or any other camera app that you have when you’re operating your phone with that microphone.
2) The reason why your phone needs to be in airplane mode when using this mic is because it’s not shielded and if you get a phone call or a text message or some other sort of notification coming in you get that interference noise that Dirca Dirca noise. The new MV88+ fixed that problem so you don’t have to put it in airplane mode anymore and you can actually use it when you’re live streaming.
3) Yes you get true stereo and part of that is because not only does the microphone swivel but it also rotates. So the microphone capsule actually rotates.
This is a fantastic microphone it has been one of my favorites for a long time I’ve had it for years I think the new one is going to be great too I’m hoping to get one of those in the next week or so so I can review it and compare it and do some videos with it and other microphones so I don’t think you can go wrong with it. If you don’t need it for live streaming I think you’re good to go. You just have to make sure when you use it you put your phone in airplane mode so that you don’t get any of that interference noise.
Also thanks for watching and please subscribe.
the shure is incredible, but the Rode one i think isn't worth it compared to the built in iphone mic
The Sure MV88 has drawbacks but it sounds clearer, not compressed. Thanks for the review
Yeah I really liked the MV88 a lot
Am I the only one that thought the iPhones internals mics sounded best?!!
Hahaha they do sound surprisingly good.
They are more than great for indoors. I only would use these other ones for outdoors. It is very hard to get good video without them using just the iPhone mic outdoors with wind etc.
Great comparison. Thank you so much!
Thank you I really appreciate it. Thanks for watching.
“Ger derka derk” lol so good! Do you vlog with your iPhone XS Max? I’m rocking Premiere Rush with the XS Max and am gonna start of my test goes well today which I’ll be posting on my channel. So did you choose the Shure over the Rode?
Yes I went with the Shure over the Rode. I actually kept both but I pretty much only use the Shure.
Thanks for watching and let me know when you start posting so I can check out your vlog. Thanks again and please subscribe.
helped me decide to get the shure
That’s great I’m happy I could help. Thanks for watching.
Have you used the RODE mic outside? I’m curious to see how well it does against blocking the sound of wind.
The Rode mic does really well blocking the wind when you use a dead cat on the mic if you do not have a dead cat on the mic it’s basically useless indoors or outdoors.
Great video my friend. Thanks!
Thank you much appreciated. Thanks for watching
Love your light setup in the video! What lights are you using?
I believe in this video I was using a Litra torch it might have been a Litra pro but I think it was a Litra torch. Thanks for watching and please subscribe.

I heard the mv88 was discontinued. Is still good for 2022?
Hmmm 🤔 I hadn't heard that I'll have to look it up.
Need some help. Why when you connect this mic and play back what you just recorded it’s muted, but when you disconnect obviously you can hear it again? Appreciate any help
Yes once you plug in anything into the lightning port your audio has to be played through that device. If you don't have a headphone port on the mic then your only option is to unplug the mic or connect wireless earbuds.
Hi great video and good comparison but I need you recommendation please. I play and sing to want to record songs in house whilst recording music for church.
If you’re going to do all that get the Shure Mic it’s gonna be better to make the adjustments you need to get the best out of it.
MV88 is the best by far.
Yes I agree the MV88 sounds great I love that little mic.
When using this with a normal selfie stick moving around is impossible because of loud cracking noise. Any idea how to solve this? Thanks!
What selfie stick are you using?
Turn on Airplane Mode.
Nice review n comparsion. Have a goodnight
Congrats, great video...!!
Question: the Shure MV88 Plus is out, I am a musician and the hole idea for me is to have the headphones jack for monitoring my "on the fly" recordings... Shure MV 88 Plus $ 249 ...!!
Is it still a good idea to pay $249 instead of $79 for the Rode ME-L...??
Thanks.
The Shure gives you way more control you'll appreciate it trust me.
Great review, helped me decide which mic to go for!
That's awesome thanks for watching and sharing your comment.
Why did you not remove the dead cat wind shield (which is for outdoor recording) on the Rode before you tested the mic? The comparison is therefore "unfair" between the 2 mics.
Because I have found even the slightest of wind from something simple like walking messes up the audio of the Rode.
Love the video. You should monetize by adding Amazon Affiliate links in your YT description for the products that you review.
I do the links are in there.
I do the links are in there. Thanks for the suggestion though.

omg the Rode is tinny and low volume. But at least no static in the bg

Awesome video! Is there anyway to use this with a larger case like an otter box?
Not that I have found. I had to stop using thick cases.

@@TodayIFeelLike Darn! That's the only thing stopping me from pulling the trigger on one of these.
That is a problem with almost every audio solution with the iPhone.
Just found your video, may I ask you can I record videos from my iPhone while I have inside this microphone MV88? I mean... it records video + voice, or it need to be done separately? Any suggestions? Thanks :)
Yes you can record both audio and video together. With the MV88 you setup the mic’s audio settings and those settings travel to other app where you use the mic.
What type of mic would you recommend if you were using a gimbal as your smartphone rig?
That really depends on what you are shooting? If you are shooting say a walk and talk I would use the Saramonic Blink 500 wireless system. If you are doing say impromptu interviews or getting ambient sound then I would look at the Shure MV88+
Thanks for the response. Its my first set up I looked into the iPhone stand alone rigs which give you great stabilization but if you start moving around not so much so I went with the smooth q2 and it would be more for reviews and walk and talk for now and see how it blooms.
DJMEDIC671 Send me a link to your videos once you post them. I wanna see how you do and how it works out.
Thanks for vid, is there anything in settings I need to do to use this? When I plug in and record then I playback there is no sound
Which mic?
All you do is plug it in and it will work with whatever video recording app? Referencing the Rode.
Same with the Shure.
TodayIFeelLike Thank you!
Is it me or does VideoMic Me-L sounded worse than the standard iPhone mic? I think the Shure MV88 enhanced the sound, whereas the Me-L muffled it.
Yes the Shure mic sounds the best hands down I think.
Because its necessaire open the rode app and increase the volume/ sensitivity on rode app and Keep it open, After that, its just open the other app and use. The sound blows up
Thanks I'll give it a try and see how it does.
Is the shure mv88 decent in wind with the given foam muff?
It's a decent outside with the wind muff but I really recommend getting a dead cat. That's what I did and it works really well.
Hmmm, you did a test in an perfect room. How do this mics perform in a noisy room?
Hahaha 😆 perfect room. Now that's a good one. In all seriousness I review products in the same way I use them.
I use a DJI OSMO 4 gimble with an iPhone 12 afraid direct mount will restrict movement. Do you know an adapter for RØDE VideoMic Me-L. I am searching for 30+ hours and Thanks
You might be better with a wireless
Hi, and thanks for this vid. For sure this us a awesome mic ! I used with my iPad Air 2. Now I have got an iPad Air 4, equipped with a USB C connector ! Any idea for an adaptor able to connect my new iPad to MV88 mic ? Thanks a lot.
No I don't know of an adaptor but the MV88 is supposed to work with USB C.
@@TodayIFeelLike Concerning the MV88+, you are right, but I’m talking about the MV88 !
Yes I understand I just don't have a good answer for you so I was trying to give you a good alternative.
Hey there
Thanks a lot for this review! As this is a directional microphone, I'm wondering whether it would work for my specific use case?
I'm busking on the streets, and while I'm having a "real" portable PA with both microphone and guitar input, I'd sometimes like to not carry around all that stuff and still be able to amplify both my voice and my guitar.
I have an iPhone holder that I can attach to the front of my acoustic guitar, so I can look at my iPhone's screen while playing. I thought: why not just use my microphone to pick up both the guitar and my voice, and connect a little Bluetooth speaker to amplify? While wearing headphones, this works perfectly (sound quality isn't great, but enough for my purpose). But as soon as I connect the speaker, I get terrible feedback issues (no surpise here).
So - do you think using a directional microphone like the RØDE VideoMic Me (and placing the speaker in front of myself, facing to the audience), I would get a better result?
Maybe you could give it a try? I would love to hear your opinion.
Thank you!
You can try but I think you might be better off with the Shure MV88+ you can adjust the pick up pattern and the sensitivity of the mic and is properly shielded designed for mobile livestreaming so you shouldn't have those interference issues.
@@TodayIFeelLike Thanks for reaching out anyway. :-)
Thanks for your video! Can you help me on choose one n these mics or an audio recorder like the zoom H1, I'm musician and I need something to record good audio quality but lightweight and not so expensive. The video is going to be catched with the phone, but don't know what option is better to acoustic songs and singing.
Have a good day!
Check out the Shure you will be happier with it.
@@TodayIFeelLike Thanks for your time! but it's really expensive for me, I'm chilean and right know is too much... I have 120 dolars for one...
OMG I bought it but it doesn't fully fit in with my iPhone 11 Pro case and I don't want to have to take it off every time, I want my phone to have protection, what do you recommend?
I originally thought the mic fit but heard only a little difference but when I took the case off and inserted the mic then I realized that was a 100% fit and there was a bigger difference.
You need a case with the bottom open

So which one is better where we can hear lesser background sound please?
I like the Shure better. I will try and make a new video comparing them in different situations.
which is better rode mic microphone or shure in terms of use? and is it compatible with iphone12

This is probably a stupid question, but I take it you cant do this setup if you are using the iPhone 11 Pro and shooting ultra wide correct? Reason I ask is cause I host a weekly podcast that I want to start adding video to and for the setup I was thinking of going with the DJI Osmo Mobile 3 and either the MV88 or Me-L. Do you think that would be a good setup for a 2 person podcast or is it better going with a regular tripod and completely different setup? Any advice would help. Thanks.
That's a good question and I'm not sure However if you write me back again tomorrow I'll try and remember to test it tonight and then I'll let you know.

It depends on what you need. The Mic Me L is directional so it's better in that respect.

Yeah that's a problem. You have to get a case with the bottom part open or you have to remove the case. I personally use cases where the bottom part is open so I don't have any obstructions when I'm using accessories like my mv88.
Azusa Pacific in the house!!!! 💪🏿
Oh yeah APU BABY!!!
Nice review! Is the Shure compatible with Android phones?
Not this one but the Shure MV88+ is compatible with Android and iOS.
Hi, Which clip-on mic have you used to record this video?
i have a question what is the hearing range.
The noise concelation is not optimal
For which mic are you talking about.
Wait so can you still livestream with the Rode? Without putting it in airplane mode? Or does it have to be in airplane mode?
Yes you can live stream without it being in airplane mode you may run into some problems but it’s much much better than other microphones.
