My Life in Gaming makes documentaries, deep dives into retro console hardware, and more. Игры
We’ve progressed too far and there’s nowhere left to go.... except backwards
correct!
Reject HD, go back to monki.
just when you think you couldn't nerd out anymore than where these guys take you
The plot of TeИet in a nutshell.
That sums up this video pretty well. I was very surprised this wasn't an April Fools Day video. This seems to go directly against everything MLiG stands for. RGB999: How to get a worse picture and aspect ratio from your games.
The blips i believe are actually due to image brightness! I have experienced similar issues on my GBS 8200 until I put a 100 ohm resistor from the green Y terminal to ground to pull down the signal village a bit. Worked like a charm. The benefit has carried over to the upgrade I did to GBS control
Are you referring to what's going on very noticeably at 36:59 (and throughout the whole video)? It was seriously bothering me and I came into the comments and didn't see anyone else mention it but you. If this is something the GBS is doing, then I guess I'm out, but wanted to make sure it wasn't just my computer/monitor.
The GBS seems to be expecting signals outside the normal YPbPr spec. (Keep in mind it was originally intended to convert arcade machines to LCD.) It's fairly easy to add a resistor without soldering to test the theory.
Thanks for your comment. Now I'm curious.
Say if Coury didn't use the HDMI to Component transcoder, but instead opted to use VGA input (via a hdmi to vga transcoder/convertor), would these blips still be present? From what you're saying, this seems to arise from using component input.
I'm looking to see if I can do some 240p downscaling into my PAL CRT over SCART via a DIY GBS Control (and a decent RGBHV to RGBs sync combiner on the output). I want to see what issues I may run into and look for fixes.
I've been having the same issue with my retrotink 5x pro. Is there a way to add a resistor to this without having to open up the device? Perhaps in one of the hdmi to component converters?
eehr those blips are super noticable. I couldn't game like that with them.... ?!
Final Fantasy VII Remake on a CRT--JUST like the developers wanted.
oh yeah!
I think it did improve the look of it. the Softer look helped mesh the textures better.
@@braddl9442 Fourtunatley the PS5 version seems to fix the textures
@@Powerman293 sadly.... its the PS5... lol jk
@@Powerman293 Yeah, seeing the drastically improved textures across all surfaces made it abundantly clear that SE just lowballed the hell out of the PS4's environmental texture res.
I spend maybe 1000$/€ in the framemeister, RGB cables from RetrogamingcablesUK for all my consoles, the best component cables, GCHD MKII, Bandridge svb7733 rgb switcher, RGB mods and an Mclassic to upscale all my retro consoles to glorious 1440p in my 4k TV.
Now I want to downscale my HD consoles to 240p 🤤
There’s something about MLiG videos that just make you feel like a million bucks. Every time I get to the end of one of your videos, I’m grinning from ear to ear and grossly optimistic about gaming. Nothing else gets me more hyped up to play some games and have a good time. Thank you so much for all of your hard work!
You took the words out of my mind. Especially the intro music. Holy hell it's so nostalgic and gives me goosebumps.
This downscaler would seemingly be a perfect fit for those "classic" collections on gen 5 and 6 consoles that were criticized for their 480i resolutions. I'm talking about titles like Sega's Classic Collection and Genesis Collection as well as Sega's Smash Pack on the Dreamcast. Any 2D fighters from these eras that display in 480i could also benefit from this conversion. Great video.
I've been using GBS-Control for 240p downscale for several months now and I swear by it. I've been able to retire my faded low quality CRT computer monitor to the spare room, and now just use my 15khz PVM for all consoles including sixth gen.
You know I love seeing so much CRT in one video. GREAT Stuff and thanks for showcasing this device. Gotta get that Vertical Scroll fixed.
This is so cool, great job once again!
I am surprised though that with how many times the Chrono Cross problem has been brought up, the fact that the PS1's boot sequence and menus has never been mentioned. I've never been able to hear the full PS1 boot since getting an OSSC!
[Try4ce] Yeah that's sad too, but nothing that ruins any games. Three menu thing is a problem because it's during gameplay and the games are unplayable.
@@mylifeingaming I was honestly surprised when I saw it, I wasn't expecting it and I never noticed as a kid. Do any other consoles of that generation use 480i/p for their base menus?
Saturn has the same behavior in some games. I couldn't find a list, but Radiant Silvergun, Thunder Force V, Die Hard Arcade, and Dead or Alive all have sync issues from resolution switching.
I keep wondering if a solution might be for the renderer to actually "see" and respond to that signal in real time after every frame, simply composing it's signal with the blanked scan lines either odd or even based entirely on that real time measure instead of the current method which has to actively switch into semi-fixed "modes" of operation. In other words, it would be a 480p signal every time with the timing signal at the end of each frame telling the OSSC where to insert blank lines. I feel like if the processor could run fast enough to make that on-the-fly rendering, then it would "naturally" work without any notable gap where it was switching modes.
I’ve been eyeing the GBS control for this exact reason for a grip but was intimidated. Thank you SO much!
What a cool and unique trip this was! Thank you so much for this episode!
I have basically zero desire to ever do this, but damn I love your videos! Each one is basically a deep-dive documentary on a gaming topic and it's amazing!
I bought the components and a friend of mine built it for me. I can't wait to put my hands on that thing.
This was very cathartic for me! I've always been curious about this subject. Love it!
This is such a cool video. Thanks for testing so many games!
This is excellent. I've been so curious about this. Thanks! On a side, I totally envy your ability to record a crt screen so well.
These videos are so well put together. Thank you SO much!
Very cool video, I can see why it took so long to put together. It was interesting to see how these titles looked in 240p downscaled from their original resolution. 100% correct, probably most won’t take the time to fiddle just for mixed results, but there is something to playing some of these on a CRT!
I emulate everything so I'm not sure why I enjoy watching these videos so much. Guess that's a sign of great content.
For me it's both. But for example to buy all the interesting Saturn games ist top expensive. Only have the console with a mod. But i emulate many and even build an retropie arcade. But the original thing is fascinating for me!
Me too but I like to know the basis of what I'm emulating and what I should be aiming for visually. I like the compromise of clarity with some trappings of real hardware, like scaliness and extremely mild softening of the raw pixels
I used to talk such crap on emulators, because I was always picturing the bad ones who left a gross impression via audio, video artifacts.
But emulation really has come a long way and it's q good backup or stopgap before I take the steep cost plunge of buying original hardware and putting in modwork.
@@axelkusanagi4139 crap?? i have all on Emulation too. But somethin in me wants the real deal... only sometimes. At least i want the original looking Controller for coming into the mood :D but on many repro Controllers the analoge pads are baaad.
I have more emulation than physical games. 5 NES and maybe 11 or 12 SNES 1 Saturn and 4 Wii Games.
This year it got an original Saturn. First Sega System i touched in my life!
This is amazing, you did a good job covering what I'd like to see as well. Thank you!
One of my new favorite videos on this channel.
This is the kind of RUclips content I live for. Great video, MLiG!
The black ceiling tiles turned out well, the install looks good! As always, great video.
Great find! I’ve been curious about downscaling for a while, good to know.
What a great video guys! Thank you! Watched it on my 36"" widescreen Toshiba HD CRT. Use it for all modern stuff. Natural colors and motion on CRTs - the best!
Awesome topic covered in a super thorough, entertaining and professional way. Awesome work as always. 👌
I have been waiting for coverage like this since I got my GBS-C AIO!
It's already sold out. Do you know who I contact to try to get one?
Even though I will never even be able to do this, it's so incredibly cool. Great vid as always!
I would love to see Mega Man 9 and Mega Man 10 downscaled as they were never released as 240p titles on WiiWare. Only 480i. I believe the other versions support 480p+.
holy crap guys an hour of content must have been a massive amount of work, great work cant wait to watch.
Nice work Coury! An hour long video is a ton of work, well done sir!
This video is so cool! Nice to see that some modern game design holds up so well on older televisions.
What a treat this video was! I'd never have thought to check out what modern consoles look like on CRT but I'm so glad you did, every game was such an enjoyable little experiment to witness.... but now you've got me back on eBay looking for PVMs... >_
Honestly, I don't think PVMs are worth it, at least not for me. There are plenty of good consumer grade CRTs just sitting around waiting to be trashed. My girlfriend brought home a 27" Trinitron that her coworker was trying to get rid of. Her coworker didn't understand why anyone would want a CRT television. This particular Trinitron has composite and S-video, and while I would have preferred component as well, I was shocked by how good the Sega Saturn looks even over composite. The colors and black levels are SO much better than my HDTV, I vastly prefer this set regardless of input used.
27" is my sweet spot. Anything bigger is going to be significantly heavier. I had a 32" Panasonic Tau CRT that I bought right near the end of CRT manufacturing, and while that TV had a great picture, it was literally 200 lbs and a pain in the ass to move. I ended up giving it away just so that I wouldn't have to move it again. Luckily, last year my work was getting rid of some old electronics including a 27" version of the same Tau that I had, so I got dibs on it. It's a true flat-tube TV with component input, a really great comb filter for composite signals, and something like 800 lines of horizontal resolution. The downside is that it's much heavier than the Sony, at nearly 110 lbs. But that's right on the edge of what I'm willing to deal with in terms of weight.
My point being, I was looking into buying a 14" Sony PVM (20" was just too expensive and heavy for my taste), and while that might be fine for a desk setup, I decided that 14" was too small for a main gaming monitor. I like playing light gun games with my girlfriend, and a 27" is big enough for that. While a PVM will certainly give you a slightly better picture, I think the jump from going from an LCD flat panel TV back to a consumer CRT is much greater than going from CRT to PVM. PVMs are more of a pain to set up, they're heavier for a given size, and shipping one is a huge risk. With the Panasonic TV, I can plug all of my consoles in via component and get RGB-quality video without any of the hassle of actually using an RGB monitor.
Just some things to keep in mind. For me, a PVM just didn't make much sense because I wanted a simple setup and a larger screen size, and the image quality of a PVM wasn't enough to justify the cost and hassle, especially when I had access to some perfectly good TVs for free. If you ask around, you'll probably find someone that has one that they're not using and will happily give to you. Even if it's a "crappy" set, just take it home and give it a try and you might be surprised by how much better you like it for older games.
How are you not verified? All you need to do is ask Google support
I happened upon an abandoned Sony Trinitron TV in an attic space. I hooked up most of my retro consoles using composite running through multiple AV selectors and splitters. I have the signal split to go to the Trinitron and an old Zenith portable CRT TV (what makes it portable is the handle and car adapter). All of my old games look significantly better on it and I cannot go back to playing them on a modern LCD monitor. There is one exception: To stream the games onto my capture card, I got an AV to HDMI converter with built in screen ratio settings. The icing on the cake was recently getting a Genki Shadowcast allowing me to play the games on my computer monitor and manage game capture software all on the same screen.
Wow! This arrived at the perfect moment for me! I was just about to figure out how to do this but you've basically shown me exactly how to do it! People might think I'm crazy but I love gaming on monitors from my childhood! Now every system I own can potentially display through my old monitors! :-)
It's always a joy when MLIG tests such a niche idea for no other reason but because they can. That is some true game love right there. Thank you for all your hard work guys.
Yes true, although I'd never go this far myself as it's seems way to convoluted to even spend money on its still fascinating stuff.
Fantastic video. Coury you did an amazing job, this made my friday.
I've been using my PS3 directly hooked up to my Sony PVM with RBG cables, and it's absolutely amazing!
Never going to touch this myself, but it was really interesting to see you test all these games.
I think this is a fun episode, thanks for making it Coury. It's somewhat interesting to me too because I'm making a software based 3D game engine for low resolutions that I specifically hoped to run on a CRT, and at true 240p would be nice too.
Thanks for sharing this downscale adventure, great quality as always in your show!
Somehow it’s just cool to downscale these newer games and to see those scanlines pop-up. There are lots of games left to try. Maybe someone could make a list of the best downscaled games. Marvel vs capcom 3 is also a great game to play in 240p
Man. I'm so glad I was able to snag a GBS-C AIO for those few hours they were available.
Nice! I've been wanting to play my Nintendo Switch on crt. like 80% of the games i own are classic pixel art or inspired by such. nice video! always look forward to your guys' uploads c:
Excellent insight - thanks for the all the hard work and effort to qualify your points & helpful observations and conclusions; always exceptional content keep up the great FPGA Mister content too
I wonder if something like Star Wars Squadrons would just look like watching the original trilogy on VHS.
Great episode! I’m always impressed by the depth of your content. Legit the best damned retro channel on the internet.
That random Sunshine Coastline was really cool, Cory should try to show more gameplay of Falcom games on videos so more people know them
Woooow awesome video!
Congrats for the great work!
If you ever decide to try a few more games, please include Blaster Master Zero to the list!
a one hour episode? this is the nerdiest thing I*ve seen so far, and I'm into nostalgic gaming since many years now :D
this gave me chills, because i have never thought of the idea of downscaling stuff for faux retro before. It is a rare day when one encounters a brand new idea. Wow.
Once thing I was waiting to be mentioned was using the switch's screen adjustment settings to tweak the height and width of the displayed image. It's a feature deep in the switch's settings menu and applies system-wide. I used to to adjust for parts of the image falling off screen when I converted the switch's HDMI signal into component for a retro display. Worked great for me!
Awesome video! Would’ve loved to see either Ori game in 240p but I think you guys have a thoughtful sample of games here!
This video is so cool, thanks! (I still use a CRT TV, but not for gaming, they never break and I will keep using it as long as possible)
Sonic Mania abd Blazing Chrome look great on a CRT. Playimg both games with Retro Bits wireless Genesis controller is a blast. Great video you guys always hit it out of the park with these videos.
Love this video. I threw together a GBSC just a few months ago and am very happy with this cheap scaler. My diy version is certainly "a jumble of wires and pcbs, just a mess." I've mostly been using it to upscale extra consoles that aren't in my crt setup to my 4k living room tv. I'm very exited to learn about the motion adaptive deinterlacing mentioned tword the beginning of the episode, I wonder if this can do away with the flicker from 480i ps2 games on a crt. All together my GBS control cost less than $50 to put together (scart input, sync cleaner, clock gen, etc...) and the scaling is definitely good enough in my eyes not to shell out for an OSSC.
great vidéo guys. 👍👍👍. hope to see more on 480i to 240p downscaling though
This whole channel is better than anything on netflix. Great work guys
I dunno. Netflix has some diamonds in the rough.
I know exactly what you're getting at, though.
My what a trendy thing to say
This is such perfect timing. I just ordered an 8220 for exactly this purpose.
You guys never disappoint. Underrated channel.
The word your looking for is underappreciated, not underrated. This channel is highly rated as it should be.
@@technozombie789 I like that, that makes more sense
@@technozombie789 yeah I agree!
They deserve 1 million subscribers, like they put so much effort into their videos!
Brilliant. Need to get one of these now 👍🏻👍🏻
Loved the episode idea. Now you need to do a guide to how to do the same downscaling with directly through the PC without the extra hardware (if it's even possible), where most of my indie pixel-art games are, lol ^^
I had just started researching this yesterday!
This was really interesting and it was so well made. You just earned a sub from me
What happens if you feed the 240p back into an OSSC and upscale it?
The real questions here
lmao plz
Upscale that, capture and record to DVD. Capture it, encoding to Divx. De-noise and upscale to 8k.
Downscale.
that's what I do sometimes. I line triple to 720p + scanlines and some games look really good. only downside is the aspect ratio squish
Farcry 3: Blood Dragon looks like it would fit in PERFECTLY in an old railshooter type setup from the 90s, and it's WILD how well some of these games downscale. fascinating stuff!
Thanks , I have always wanted to be able to downscale the Xbox 360 Shmup Collection to 240p. Thanks for the knowledge.
So cool, love this one so much. I been playing new games on a WIDE CRT with S VIDEO, lots of games gain a special flavor with CRT, specially horror games, like Evil Within, RE 7, Outlast or Alien Isolation, also Dark Souls, specially 1 & 2, Minit, Undertale, Celeste, a lot of modern pixel games looks amazing.
It's quite amusing how Aerith looks cute even in 240p
Incredible work as ever.
another great video from this channel
Thank you so much, very interesting video! 💪
I've got one of those 16:9 widescreen trinitron CRTs so I'm looking forward to trying this out
I believe retroarch has native CRT output available
Is that so? I keep hearing about this but im worried about input lag from my nes mini to crt tv.
Saw Phantasy Star Online disc in the thumbnail, instantly gotta watch that
This was quite the episode! Modern consoles look great on a HD-capable BVM too ;)
Hardcorps Uprising at least still looks great at 480i, had fun playing it on my CRT, great video as always guys
Great vid again, guys. Thanks.
I have a theory about the small sync glitches in downscaling mode. Maybe it's because the vertical refresh rate from the GBS-C is set too close to what the consoles are outputting.
ie. it might be expecting the source to be say 59.94Hz, but the consoles are outputting at exactly 60Hz.
So the two frame rates are very close to eachother, but still asyncronous, so it's spending a bit too long swapping the framebuffers when the incoming and outgoing frame rates "line up".
Like at 10:13, where the input to that scaler is async to the output.
Try changing the output refresh rate on the GBS-C to something else, like even 50 Hz (if your BVM accepts 50 Hz, probably?)
Just a thought, as it would be quick to test. ;)
Really great video. Btw because of SCART we in Europe can hook up consoles up to the PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii U easily to our CRTs. This is really awesome and I reasently play many games of that era on my CRT just because I like the look.
Excellent video!!! Was just wondering what were the Game titles featured in this video??
I love everything about this video. Seeing all these modern games in downscaled CRT glory was something to behold. However I must admit that given your obvious love for the CRT I am kind of surprised you haven't tracked down a late model HD CRT for more modern game play. Something like a Sony KV-30HS420 for instance. It has a big tube, is 16:9 widescreen, has HDMI input, can display up to 1080i, the works. If you really want CRT look and quality with modern games something like this might be right up your alley.
[Try4ce] I used to have an HD CRT (a 36 inch 4:3 Sony version), but it was just too dangerously heavy to move or do anything with. Eventually I got rid of it so I could have room to do things with proper 15kHz CRTs. There definitely are perks to playing 480i or 480p games on an HD CRT, but even my first fixed-pixel 720p LCD TV from 2010 could show more detail in PS3 games than my HD CRT. I feel it's a technology that neither has the full benefits of analog or digital, and has a very narrow set of consoles that really shine on it. Just my opinion, though. I may have just resented the space it took up more than anything. :)
@@mylifeingaming Yes they do have a somewhat narrow range of consoles that can truly take advantage of them, but those that can look amazing. Where they really shine is when you track down one of the 16:9 models and can run stuff like OG Xbox games in widescreen. Now I can certainly understand the space and weight concerns. No arguments there that is for sure. I've got a couple of beast CRTs that top out over 200lbs myself. I get a new hernia every time I dust in the game room. XD
Wow, interesting stuff! I did a double take at that Genesis at 49:31 before I realized it was a mini. XD
Please do another episode on 480i to 240p downscaling, Coury!
Can't wait for the comparison with the new Retrotink 5x pro!
Definitely return to this subject! I'd love to see what you could get up to with this. Maybe find some hidden PS2 gems that downscale particularly well?
Very useful exploration especially since the Cuphead insight made we weep and feel like I was in an original Disney classic so thanks again
Watching you play these new games on a CRT makes me think back when I first played a 3D game. Seeing FFVII Remake on a CRT is what my memory tells me the original looked like back when it was brand new. Great video!
Always wanted to try this. I don't have a GBS-C, but looks like the RetroTiNK 5X Pro and OSSC Pro will have downscaling features. Looking forward to testing it out, especially Sonic Mania. Even though that game has probably the best CRT filter I've seen, and that includes stuff like CRT-royale in Retroarch.
burst of nostalgia from that gradius V music
I play a lot of games in my 480i sony vega. Yes mayor problem overall is text in games. When it comes to PC. A tool you really need is an application called "borderless gaming" that way you can fullscreen many games in a better way. also filters like sweetFX for cropping the image. a And of course an old GPU that can natively output component/s-video/composite. (better if is as 2nd gpu for output tv output). Nice video. I've been looking for downscalers a lot.. retroarch is a wonderful emulator for the Vsync options. NICE video btw!
I actually fancied doing this with some PC games, but the tvOne devices and so on were just way too rare and expensive. Thanks for showing this off!
...now I can actually play the original Daytona USA in 4:3 with a steering wheel. Ooooooh.
Whoa, that transformers game looks so cool, hearing that original transformation sound was so awesome and nostalgic.
I'm a simple man. I see Bob, I upvote. Great video guys! Looks like I have some more hardware to purchase!
This is really cool.
I have played allot of the 360 port of Mushihimesama Futari on my Egret 2 cabinet using viletims/eviltims scart to Jamma converter that I bought from him years ago. Unfortunatley the converter is just passing trough the image, and since 360 can't output 240p, So I had to come to terms with a 480i image, still looks great though even without the proper scanlines, and I only notice the image flickering sideways at the motionless result screens bewteen stages.
But I am quite certain I have one of those GBS carts laying arround, since I bought one to test if my MVS motherboard was working years ago before getting my egret 2 cabinet. I assume it might be a older version though, since I bought it in like 2008 i think.
When nostalgia goggles just don't get the job done anymore.
While I love the video overall, I have to admit that I was a bit disappointed at a couple things in the PC segment. One, you could've used a VGA cable (perhaps HDMI/DVI to RGB/VGA adapter which are readily available on amazon/ebay) to remove the stutter in the signal which might've fixed a lot of the problems you saw with games like Wizorb. Two, NO CAVE STORY?! There's a *plethora* of PC games that are styled in the vein of classic console titles, and I'm a bit disappointed that the PC segment took something of a back-seat in this episode.
I could make a whole list of just what I know of in my library of Steam/GOG games, but there's many sources for you to pull from that natively will fullscreen at 480p. RUclips videos, Wikipedia articles, listicles, etc. Then again, maybe the GBS wouldn't be ideal for that kind of scenario, instead making the Framemeister a more viable solution to those cases. Maybe this could have a follow-up feature covering PC games that work well on a PVM?
I swear, it could have its own hour (or more) long video with how many great Indie games are available in these styles of games. Not even just 2D games, but many PS1-style games as well! I recommend checking out the games included in the Haunted PS1 Demo Discs (a compilation of demos for games made from various Indies in the PS1 3D style), as well as many classic style FPS games like DUSK, Amid Evil, Heavy Bullets, Project Warlock, Ion Maiden... Another sub-set of games I could make a laundry list of.
Rambling aside, I still love the show, and I did overall really love this video! It's great seeing how well many of these retro-inspired games translated to a PVM, as well as how many flopped that *should* have worked! As usual, I'm looking forward to the next video! 😁
As one of the zerohimself techs who spent hundreds of hours over several months troubleshooting, developing, and building the GBSC-AIOs it feels great to see some love on here ❤️
thank you for your work. i absolutely love this little device.
It would've been really interesting to see how all the post-processing effects in Octopath Traveler would get affected by the downscale on a game that is essentially designed to be from that era. Interesting video regardless. Thanks!
Amazing! It's the project I'm doing. I was excited to continue! A curiosity I have: does gbs work well with an s-video / composite signal converted to vga?
I was hoping to see Sonic Mania and Streets of Rage 4 and I wasn't dissapointed, cool video
Oh yeah, next time turn your PVM off before switching to TATE mode or you may end up with Purity issues.
I am shocked by the amount of amazing looking games I never heard of are here.
