People often do not realize how hard it is to be an artist. They all think we have talent, but what they do not realize is all the hard work behind the work they see. So many hours are spent practicing, fighting against our inner critic, and so many obstacles along the way. Fortunately, awesome artists like you are showing the world that it is not all sunshine and roses. There are thorns we need to all deal with as artists, but it is these thorns that make us stronger and grow. Thank you for showing this Jono. I know it is not easy, but you are doing fantastic work that is truly inspiring to other artists like me. Keep up the great work and know that we love you, even when your sun is not always shining the way you want it to. Hugs.

When we surrender and find the joy in things it becomes easy. Then inspiration is free to flow. What you resist persists so letting go of all self criticism and trusting the process is everything. It took me years to realize it could and should feel easy. 💖🦋✨

but the video is about a different thing. When you draw for yourself - its one thing. When you draw for someone else - and the filming of the process is also for someone else - then of course this is where the outter pressure comes from, and it dictates you what to do. But also, filming is money making, business. No matter what you do, if you are filming it and making money of it - you never 100% do what you want. It is relevant to any profession, art is not special here.
I am an artist myself, and ~10 years ago was publishing art on internet a lot, getting some millions of views in total, but at some point of time I noticed that I worry about likes, comments, followers, marketing, much more, than about drawing what I really want to draw. And it was when I just stopped pleasing the audience and left art for myself.
Now I have another fulltime job, where I earn a lot and have built a career, which is totally fine for me. I still draw as a hobby, and sell/gift art once in a while, but important thing is that I can draw whatever and however I want, and I have enough free time and motivation for it. Not 16 hours a day of course, but still a plenty.
What I am trying to say is that filming and marketing, and pleasing the viewers overall, is not mandatory for being artist. It is a choice, that nobody forces you to make other than yourself. You can be a great artist without it

I can attest to this, before i started my channel my drawing felt loose, free and unafraid to make mistakes, now its more structured, worried about ruining the piece or the filming aspect, however the pay off at the end when its completed is worth it.

Is the pay off worth it? In what way do you mean if you dont mind me asking?
I have been really thinking about this as I started a small channel a couple of months ago. One of the things that I was very clear with myself is that I am not, and wont be, a RUclipsr that creates content around art but an artist that creates a video every now and then.
I do not enjoy the filming process at all. I havent decided yet if I will ever show my face on the channel either.
Time will tell I guess :)

Beautiful work and well explained. I used to love sharing my nail art and manicures on instagram and even that became way too much of a burden. Now I can just paint my nails and not have to set up the lights, take pictures, edit and compose a caption with a million hashtags, then save it to post the next morning. Makes it much more enjoyable. I can't imagine how burdensome and procrastination-inducing it'd be to film my art making process, even if I was a full time professional at it.

🎼thank you for that reflective video! For me as a singer filming processes might get me into that feeling being "watched" by the camera in first instance as later by the auditorium. I feel like I only should film for defined purposes which I mentally prepare for (which of course needs all the attention you described). I already often felt distracted.

I was one of those people who couldn't wait to get my hands on a paint brush, an airbrush, tablet ect! But this is so inspiring for kids or anyone thinking of spending large sums of money on supplies. Invest in different degrees of graphite, and charcoal pencils! Bristol and illustration board being about the most expensive . This is a great way to get started ,and like I said, sometimes just looks even better than an actual painting! I can't lie, I just started RUclips. and I Realised this SAME thing. I wasn't enjoying drawing as much when doing time lapses. those were my first few videos. worrying about alot of things and focusing on them took me out the drawing, Plus they were Abit boring to watch myself, they took forever to shoot, and edit when you have cuts in between, I didn't feel like the art was the quality I wanted, but the quality I was okay shooting. I started to find ways around this myself and shoot in different ways. adopting different techniques to showing my art, enjoy my journey on RUclips, shooting, and still love drawing myself.

The irony that this video found me right in the midst of uploading a new video myself… All of this resonates with me so much. Every single one of these ideas, I’ve thought on. I love creating art so much, but this process of being able to document and share it often has me thinking it’s a double edged sword. It’s especially tough starting out, when you put so much time and effort into being able to share that process and then, a small handful of people actually engage. (Every single one I am so grateful for) That part at least, gets better with consistency and finding new meaning in sharing it, to begin with. There is comfort in knowing that there are others out there who understand, and even the “bigger” fish struggle with these things. It’s part of the process and that added struggle can only add to the value of it all in the end.

This video is super interesting... Even though I haven't posted any art videos, I've been recording myself for a while. I don't think it takes me out of the flow state; it's just another step in the process for me. I can go right back to painting after changing a battery or sd card. It probably helps that my camera is much closer as I draw smaller pieces, so I don't have to physically move to do so. I also keep extra charged batteries and sd cards on the side of my desk so I don't have to get up.
I'm saving up for an external battery with cord for my camera, maybe that's an option for you? It doesn't solve all of the problems, but it's one less thing to worry about.

Jono, thank you so much for making this! I’ve recently started filming my work to try to make videos and I’ve run into all the problems you stated! It’s really tough trying to film alone in the way that I’d like to while trying to give my pieces the attention I usually would when I’m more consistently in the zone. I’ve always wondered how you got through those early timelapses you did without a team and made them look so effortless lol - so thanks for sharing that it was indeed challenging. It’s very cathartic and I have a renewed sense of the worth of going through that struggle 🙂. Creating good work is one thing, but sharing the work in a way that compliments it is important as well. @Jono Dry I know you posted this video a while ago, and with as many subs as you have I'm sure you have a ton of comments to read so I really do hope this comment reaches you. I think I can help with your filming woes, at least in terms of filming continuously as to not interrupt your flow. Storage of your raw footage/final edits will always be something you have to deal with - but with most cameras nowadays you can set up a V-Mount or Gold Mount battery with your camera via a D-Tap dummy battery and that can lengthen your filming time substantially. This is how nature timelapse photographers operate so they are not constantly having to swap out smaller batteries like you described when they're catching things like sunrises, sunsets and other natural phenomena that has to be filmed over the course of several hours. As far as swapping out your SD cards constantly because they're filling up, cameras like the BlackMagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K can record directly to an external SSD, so if you were already going to edit off of an SSD or hard drive, you can just opt for the one you're recording to instead. There are a lot of ways to prolong your recording sessions without having to constantly swap out cards and batteries. Hopefully my comment gives you what you need to research a solution that will work best for you and make producing the beautiful content that you do a bit easier. Thanks for everything you do for us.

Ive always struggled filming my work. Ive done so a small handful of times over the years but whenever i do im mostly conscious of it and it affects what im doing usually resulting in mistakes, or i switch off and get into the task at hand then realise hours later the camera stopped filming along time ago and i simply forgot about it. I like the idea of being able to film myself working but the practically for myself makes it a pain. At best I end up producing some low quality short clip of me messing a painting up lol (I think i have examples of such on my channel here i uploaded so as to post elsewhere, as you can see how bad they are lol)

Its beautiful man; keep going. I want to do this for myself, my practice is architecture but i struggle with the technical side of lighting it right. I would love to hear more of your process on filming and how you taught yourself if thats the case. 👍👍

trying to show flow gets you out of it.
    observing something changes it.
I guess you can build a setup with plugged in cameras connected to some external drives to resolve some of those problems.

Thank you. You just saved a lot of people lives. We are much. Better than even our desires but the Word says it is a way thAt seemth right unto a man but its end is destruction. I wanted to get into recording as a rebirth back into drawing I had neglected for disturbing reasons. It was going to be a very monumental moment because of those emotional reasons that I literally thought I had lost it. Even though I celebrated it secretly when seeing others I thought i personally lost it. Im glad that I couldn't yet share because i have a lot to workout with my direction because of AI. Can't just be good or even great. It much be complete and continual

Jono, I love your work, it’s incredibly inspiring. I have two questions, if I may. What lighting or light box do you recommend to provide good light for both drawing and filming, and what camera do you use to film your Timelapses?

Can't you run your cameras off of external power and feed the video to larger, external hard drives? Video camera have been doing this since forever.....not sure why this is an issue for you. Sure you'll have to buy more equipment but it's worth it if it gets you back to the flow you seek. Just my $.02

That I have more of an ego than I thought..or maybe that I crave some sort of validation or praise? dunno:) Whatever it is - it's not good lol...

It sounds like you don’t need to film every part of your creation. The work that you put in and the result should already reflect this, be it the energy, the process and the message. And also the interpretation of your work by someone can come in many ways, rather than by being a spectator of your creation process. It’s good for our entertainment but do you really need this? The idea of art creation is about flow, and about a process, but it should always be organic. It should be a dance and the artwork you create as a partner that can be unpredictable, this way your work will push and evolve rather than be stuck in the same way because of the filming constrains you. I feel you really need to unfetter this link with the social media side. The people that see your work connect with your work already on so many levels, maybe you don’t need to always be so transparent as you seem to be so affected by this external framework or maybe prison of sorts you created for yourself.

I used to get frustrated while drawing when it wouldn't give me the results that were in my head. However, now imagining the process of your drawings, I started increasing my patience level.
