  • The NIO EP9 all-electric supercar completed a lap of the Green Hell - the Nurburgring's formidable Nordschliefe configuration - in a record time of 06:45:90. Having previously set the electric vehicle lap record, the NIO EP9 shaved a further 19.22 seconds off that lap time. This makes the Chinese supercar not only the fastest electric vehicle around the historic circuit, but the fastest production car ever to take the challenge. Watch the full record-breaking Nurburgring onboard lap right here.

This still would not be good enough to make all electric cars ready for prime time whoever, every cell phone, laptop, or other portable electronics company would be salivating at the though of having 50% more energy. Well... yes and no. Battery energy density roughly speaking doubles every 10 years but 250Wh/kg is a long way behind 13,000Wh/kg, not that batteries need to equal fossil fuels thanks to all the other advantages. But still... you might have more than a few years to wait just yet.

    • @deep_dive6699
      @deep_dive6699 7 лет назад +11

      Slakbury I think the best comparison is probably digital cameras vs film. They went from curiosity to niche product to early adopter all the while having significant disadvantages compared to film (lower resolution, slow to start up, more expensive). However they went mainstream before those issues were sorted because digital cameras were superior in other areas such as size, storage and ability to preview images. Once they beat film all film research has stopped whereas digital still progresses at a pace, the result is that digital now exceeds film in every dimension. For electric cars the massive advantages are simplification and ability to be refuelled everywhere which make it the natural companion of autonomous cars. On the energy density front electric vehicles, use energy around 3-4 times more efficiently and don't need a; multispeed transmission, clutch, propshaft, fuel system, exhaust, inlet, filter, 12v battery, 75% of the cooling system, 80% of the mass of the engine and all of the structures and fixtures to hold these things. Current estimation is that batteries only have to double in capacity before an electric drive train will be lighter at ranges equivalent to petrol. In practice they won't need to because most journeys are short and autonomous cars will get rid of the range anxiety problem

      Well, porsche rolled out their GT3 """production""" car at Lemans to try and defeat all the McLaren F1s that had embarrassed them for two years straight. Porsche's car was not a production car, but they skimmed past the bare requirements, and never delivered it for non-company people to purchase. McLaren then created the GTR Longtail to defeat the race-only/tuner non-production porsches. So production arguments are pretty much only valid if a regulation body says it's valid.

      They are trailing behind the cutting edge tech to remain affordable for the teams and for their own costs. If they used experimental batteries and the best electronics available they could easily build a 150 kWh, 500 kW peak power under 900 kg race cars on slicks. While they would still be slower than Formula 1, they would be faster around a track than any of the cars I mentioned.

    • @fernandofragoso4118
      @fernandofragoso4118 7 лет назад +1

      The Shad The reason why Formula E is slower is just political. If regular brands could make faster sedans than Formula E, you could imagine what a Formula 1 team would be capable of make with a electric powered motor.
      Its not the right time to do it. F1 knows that electrics are not already appealing. They're waiting to be generalized and accepted by the public and when they feel its the right time to make the electric the top category, that would happen. Its a matter of public perception. ICEs are not more nor less exciting, that its all about formed intelectual concepts that were formed in our perception. we get used to the rush of speed with the sound of a ICE. if it was electric instead we would look into ICE with a very bad opinion.
