Great advice mate yeah my tank has changed a lot since my last update it is the bm 3.5 I am running I have had it since November . I shall reduce the lighting as suggested and I will get an additional powehead in there too. Cheers mate shall keep you posted . Look forward to seeing more vids.
Yeah mycosidol is what I have been using however it doesn't seem to be doing the trick . I have upgraded my lights from t5 to a Maxspect led unit it's the glaive model . However this doesn't seem to have made a positive effect . I am running full blue lights and actinic and 3000k white and green colours on about 25 %. I have tried various intensities with no joy. I also upgraded my slimmer from a tunze 9004 to a bubble magus c 3.5 which is rated for double my tank size . I also do weekly water changes and I am not overstocked . I am at a complete loss lol
+Sean Collins I feel your pain mate trust me. I almost took a sledgehammer to my nano years ago. A few more questions...... DId u change your lights to combat the cyano or did the cyano appear upon the change of lights? Did your no3 and po4 drop fast with using gfo and no pox together? Did u have cyano before dosing nopox? Is your skimmer running wet and filling up fast... a tea coloured skimate ? was your skimmer producing nice dark skimate prior to nopox dosing? Whats your flow?
Flow I believe it good with a turnover off approx 15 times an hour whenever I adjust the poweheads the cyano just grows elsewhere . I also use RO DI water
+Sean Collins www.reefaquarium.com/2012/the-importance-of-water-flow-and-movement-2/ check this article out by Cliff a couple years old but still stands as a good guide for all. u may know it all but never bad to refresh.
Hi Budgie just subbed your channel...so I have the same issue like yours..my nitrates a week ago were at 50 and phosphates around 0.04...I started dosing nopox and within a week nitrates have dropped to around or under 10 (hard to judge the colours on salifert) and phosphate is 0 as per ultra low phosphorus henna checker test kit. While I started this regimen of nopox I also controlled my feeding at literally cut it down to 25% of what I use to feed before....I use to feed 2 frozen cubes and a nori sheet daily now I feed 1 cube and half nori every other day...i see my birds nest colony bleaching as well and your video explains the drop in nutrients is the reason it's funny how sps need low nutrients but when they drop they bleach..lol..since my phosphates have gone down I have started to feed a little more and started my Aqua forest regimen providing trace elements....what parameters are you at now with nitrates and phosphates...
Hi Ashfaque thanks I subbed u back. My tank took a huge depletion in quality colour and growth with Nopox. I lowered nitrate slowly over time to only 2ppm which is not too low by any means and my phos down to 0.01 all gradually. But in all my time reefing I have not experienced such a drastic change over time. Corals were looking tired and worn out so despite dosing reef energy and amino acids etc which red sea recommends. I left carbon dosing my tank is back to its old self and growth and colour have increased . check out my later videos and you ll see the difference . I hope u have better luck than I did. I started to see nopox as a slow release poison and so did my mate. we both stopped and have not looked back. all the best.
Thanks mate for your reply my nitrate is 2.5 ppm I am keeping that steady with 1.5 ml of nopox a day . Phos is .002 or .004 I find it difficult to read the redsea test kit colours . My dkh is maintained at 7.7 to 8. This cyano is starting to takes it toll on me I have tried everything I have even tried redslime removers with no joy . Oh and I do run GFO in a reactor
+Sean Collins A few factors can create an outbreak of cyanobacteria or even in your set up with very low nitrate and phosphate levels.Your levels are nice . Red sea states: Cyano are the only life forms in the reef aquarium that can fix dissolved atmospheric nitrogen. Therefore unlike other algae types they do not need nitrate or ammonia making them the strongest micro-organism even in low nutrient type systems. I a few years ago had an absolutely horrendous outbreak of cyano only Mycosidol product finally wiped it out USING THAT WITH NOPOX AT THE SAME TIME I DONT RECOMMEND EVEN IF OTHERS DO ... the Balanced level of Phos and trate is a must...u appear to have that. Because its often recommended to raise the NO₃ to at least 0.25ppm help in correcting the balance of cyano . Have u got a highly efficient skimmer? Made any changes in flow recently since nopox? what are your lights?
+Budgiesboxowarter ps yes Red sea nitrate test kit me and many others on the forums find it is not correlating at times to any colour. This is why i also purchased salifert one. cheap and cheerful.
Hi great video on nopox. I have used this product on and off but have nenes been convinced by it . Do you run any phosphate media . I have cyano at the moment and I am not sure whether to stop nopox dosing all together or keep going with it .
+Sean Collins Hi Sean. Thanks a lot. Red Sea recommend stopping all other phosphate based removal media. Now however.....other reefers for a long time have continued with Rowaphos, GFO Phosban etc...along with the nopox and not had adverse affects...but!....Things can change rapidly then when doing it that way. More gradual the better in this game.I am not running both and u can see despite my obsessive nature still have adverse effects from my sps. Cyano- bacteria is often caused by imbalance in phos and nitrate red sea states, Mainly phos increasing and nitrate dropping...please see this link from a red sea rep. www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2153480. (reef central just one of the reef forums available, i am not associated to it). What are your nitrate and phos readings and kh also?
Is that a blue acrylic background you placed over the glass? If so how did you that. It looks nice. I really don't like black background in most tanks. When coraline grows it does not look good against black background
Hi Eric. Very good point u make. I hate black background for same reason. That is actually how the tank was made I was lucky. Thanks for checking it out 🖒
+Budgiesboxowarter p.s Eric on an empty tank it wouldn't be difficult to silicone seal using some aquarium proof sealant a nice blue piece of acrylic. problem is our tanks are normally filled with water when we decide these things which makes it a messy job. 🖒
I had the cyano with the t5 lighting so I changed to the LED unit hoping it would sort it out . My levels didn't drop dramatically my phos has always been around the same even with the GFO. My skim is wet and is s tea colour I have never noticed it any different really . I am emptying the cup once a week . Sorry for this mate lol
+Sean Collins No worries like to try and help. Others may also chime in. If Cyano was there before dosing nopox thats an important point. Your lighting initially could have fuelled it but doubtful it was just that...Flow is a huge factor too. Changing your lights to led in itself some say can trigger cyano but i understand why u changed lights as a process of elimination. what would i do GO BARE BOTTOM but thats just me............Id also increase flow if possible as long as it didn't impact on corals too much id increase flow massively. Id reduce my light cycle time currently i run 11 hours id reduce to 6. I know the BM 3.5 its a good skimmer...but ....nopox needs the best skimming despite the tank size.I just looked at your vid its the J 12o u have yes?. Nice rock scape id pop another P head in there to combat cyano if you aint already. Remember cyano isn't classed as an algae need to combat it as a bacteria. Any changes to media GFO need to be done gradually!! if u try that, this is what a very well known reefer i know of on the forum 'The Reef tank 'done www.thereeftank.com/forums/f6/how-to-get-rid-of-cyano-181623.html Join a forum! if u aint already also. We all have different views I am experienced but these forums have marine biology level reefers on em. Cyano gets u down but please keep at it !
Ok mate sound do just to recap shall I continue dosing nopox despite the presence of cyano and I have dosed the tank with mycosidol earlier this afternoon I have also gone with a 3 day blackout starting tonight
+Sean Collins Hi This is my advice...u can top it up with others advice u now have too...... The black out will take the edge off but not a full fix. Its all about No3 Po4 balance. Be careful with long black outs if u have high light dependant corals. Increase water changes with fresh RO from a good source making sure its 0 TDS (total dissolved solids) Reduce your feeding in half at least, feed every other day unless u have a fish that needs very regular feeds i doubt u do like...anthia tangs as your tank nice and smaller. Skim wet as u can without disrupting the salinity too much. Keep the Gfo on line reduce the NOPOX dose in half. Increase flow +++ Remove some (very small amount) of your sand ,the top layer may remove high nutrient enriched crusty sand, u can always add more sand (thats another story in itself though) later. If your running any filter floss keep the floss clean/change it regular. Let me know if it makes any difference any slight improvement in like 3 or so days. Grant
you are dead right been doing this for 20 years and still finding out more and more
