Lagoon Reef mixed LPS dominated
I have the reefing bug again. A couple of weeks off work has given me time to tidy it up and my mates corals and fish he has given me (he is shutting his down) has really added some popping colours.
The damsels ....well they have really been bullies as expected. They attacked a royal Gramma to the death and a yellow wrasse is in hiding. They are tolerating the 2 common clowns though.
All feedback appreciated.

    Ive had really good luck with NoPoX. Went from 20ppm trate to 5ppm in a week. Ill dial back dosing at 5ppm. Some trate is necessary for overall health. If ya wipe out nitrate, its kills off GOOD bacteria. And if overdosed, you deplete O2.

    • @Grantygrantyb
      @Grantygrantyb 8 лет назад

      finatics hi there. I've seen your videos . like your system a lot. well it's got better and better for me and my reefs almost back to its old self. since I stopped chasing numbers with dosing that nopox it was almost like a poison to my system. and i dosed that sh** for 7 months ! I didn't reduce over time I just stopped suddenly and only positive affects from doin it like that. my sps and many of my lps perished using it. now I am only skimming as nutrient export which is like nature with the waves crashing on the rocks and tide. OK so my sps could do with some Rowaphos I guess to get the phos down more but my advice is to keep corals which do well in your system with minimal purchases of these fancy chemical additives. it was costing me a fortune. my kh was up and down and my salinity was all over the place as had to skim very wet. I alternate now from wet to dry skimming. check out my latest video for how it is now. thanks 🐠🖒🖒

    • @Reefgrrl
      @Reefgrrl 8 лет назад

      Top of the list at the moment is a RS Reefer 425 XL however if I can't get enough space in the house for the footprint, it would likely be some version of the RS Reefer 250 depending how much $$ I can set aside. I like the idea of an AIO system and the 250 Max E has an upgrade that can add a lower level sump, which also appeals to me. I don't want anything deeper than 22" or so because I like to be able to reach the bottom without needing scuba gear. 😊 I've done a lot of reading from people who have these, and the negatives they report are things I can deal with. For example, it seems there is near-universal dislike of the built-in ATO and I would likely just not use it. But the biggest issue I have in "shopping" for one of these is actually being able to see one in person. Retailers around here don't stock the larger sizes. Might have to do a road trip across the border to the US just to see a real one. That will be next spring at the earliest because we have our daughter's wedding and Christmas holidays to get through and then winter driving....I will have to force myself to be patient. But hey - patience is key in this hobby right?

    • @Grantygrantyb
      @Grantygrantyb 8 лет назад

      Reefgrrl sounds great . Yeah all in 1 systems can be very user friendly. I think red seas range are improving more and more . I do like the freedom of self drilled sump systems too. I find it very economical to add the components myself. I love the rimless look . my next tank must have that. wow...driving over the US border hey. exciting.. .well it is to me...to u maybe a choir. I enjoyed driving in the US I done a deep south trip. people can drive and use mobile phones legally...wow. ha. Very strict here. anyway back to our obsession...Yes patience and time I've found to be everything in this game. stability overall and consistency is key. only now after stopping nopox is my tank stable. I look forward to which one u buy and set up. peace out from England. ✌🖒

    Hi Budgie just subbed your channel...so I have the same issue like yours..my nitrates a week ago were at 50 and phosphates around 0.04...I started dosing nopox and within a week nitrates have dropped to around or under 10 (hard to judge the colours on salifert) and phosphate is 0 as per ultra low phosphorus henna checker test kit. While I started this regimen of nopox I also controlled my feeding at literally cut it down to 25% of what I use to feed before....I use to feed 2 frozen cubes and a nori sheet daily now I feed 1 cube and half nori every other day...i see my birds nest colony bleaching as well and your video explains the drop in nutrients is the reason it's funny how sps need low nutrients but when they drop they bleach..lol..since my phosphates have gone down I have started to feed a little more and started my Aqua forest regimen providing trace elements....what parameters are you at now with nitrates and phosphates...

    • @Grantygrantyb
      @Grantygrantyb 8 лет назад

      Hi Ashfaque thanks I subbed u back. My tank took a huge depletion in quality colour and growth with Nopox. I lowered nitrate slowly over time to only 2ppm which is not too low by any means and my phos down to 0.01 all gradually. But in all my time reefing I have not experienced such a drastic change over time. Corals were looking tired and worn out so despite dosing reef energy and amino acids etc which red sea recommends. I left carbon dosing my tank is back to its old self and growth and colour have increased . check out my later videos and you ll see the difference . I hope u have better luck than I did. I started to see nopox as a slow release poison and so did my mate. we both stopped and have not looked back. all the best.

  • @Reefgrrl

    Such good advice about chasing numbers. The only time I ran into problems was when I thought I had low pH and tried to fix it. Big mistake. I had THREE different pH testers (never could be doing with the liquid test kits) and it suddenly occurred to me to compare them. So I calibrated all three and of course, none of them had the same readings. And it wasn't only a slight difference - they ranged from 6.65 to 7.7 to 8.4!! From that day, I have never checked the pH and my tanks are getting better and better. I test once per week for the big three (Ca, Mg and alk) and once every two weeks for potassium. Salinity once per month because one of my top-off setups is calculated based on evaporation and RODI is added via a dosing pump. So I have to watch that one. And you're also right on about wet skimming, I found exactly the same thing in the 20G. So that salinity gets checked every few days when the skimmer runs wet. This was a great video, thank you for sharing it.

    • @Grantygrantyb
      @Grantygrantyb 8 лет назад

      thanks a lot reefgrrl . Yes salinity fluctuation awful for our systems. I agree. sometimes over testing and panic dosing, number chasing and even moving stuff around with hands in our systems also....can be much much worse than doing what is sometimes best. Nothing . in my opinion our regular Water changes are the oxygen and life support of our systems. As much of the replenishment back to desired levels as possible thru the change is key to me. buying the best quality reef salt one can afford too. I am hearing a lot of talk about this aqua forest salt. nothing but good so far. ...apart from the price . thanks for your detailed comment. Grant.

    • @Reefgrrl
      @Reefgrrl 8 лет назад

      I agree completely on the water changes and that's why I set up a saltwater mixing station so I'd have water ready to go. About salt, I did try to buy a 10kg bucket of the aquaforest via Amazon, but both times I tried, it arrived as a 10kg solid BRICK - from the shipping label it came from Florida so I'm guessing there's a humidity problem. So, though I would like to try it, I won't be able to until I can find it at a retail store. These days it's hard to decide what type of salt to get and in my experience high price doesn't always correlate with high quality. 🤔 We are spoiled with choice and although it's great to have options to suit a variety of types of coral collections, at the same time it makes it hard to choose! Sorry, will stop the complaining now! I look forward to seeing more of your videos.

      Yeah i mean with regards to salt. I don't think the red sea is up to much i mean i go by how corals react and there is a salt out right now that people here are saying is great called....'Hot Salt by ATM'. they reckon the corals react great. Their claim.....'Hot Salt is made of high quality “anhydrous” raw materials that have been dried many times over to eliminate excess moisture. This is important because moisture represents the largest source of contaminants found in salt. Along with superior clearing time, ready time, consistency, and least amount of salt necessary to achieve salinity, Hot Salt Reef is simply the best'. Could be a load of crap but they confident and i heard good things. ha. charterhouse-aquatics.com/shop/aquatics/aquarium-maintenance/atm-hot-salt Uk based link to see the photo. i gonna check it out when my D&D tub finished. Thanks for watching i have seen your tank journey very good keep up the hard work.

      Hi there thanks a lot it's a 130 Gallon cube including the sump . Yeah I dose kh regular liquid supplement and nit as often i dose calc and mag . I ve learnt now the hard way to let my corals tell me if they are happy by good inflation and colour rather than repeated testing and rapid dosing. I have considered a dosing pump or ato dosing but both worry me...I trust using my hands heard horror stories of failing dosers ... even though it's a ball ache at times dropping it in I trust and sleep well. if I had a full sps tank I'd need a doser. thanks for watching 🖒

      cool thanks a nice size tank. yeah i hear you. dosing is a pain. automating is scary and expensive. I have been dosing by hand and am having no success. I am now looking into Not dosing anymore and just finding a good salt mix where i can just do maybe 2 water changes a week on my 40gallon tank..

      Yeah I am starting to see after my time in the hobby that that's the key . as much replenished thru water changes as possible and mini doses in between. let me know what aquaforest like.

      ha sorry ...wrong person...was talking about aquaforest with Jassimps on here supposed to be excellent.

    good observation vid... definitely have to be careful w/ NoPox... I drove my Nitrates straight into the ground by not watching my corals and focusing on dosing products. Are you using Red Sea's blue or black bucket salt also? Im considering the Aquaforest Reef Salt (with No probiotics) as an alternative plus its slightly cheaper. Im noticing this brown sludge stuff in my saltwater container after water changes.

      Hey Jassimps. I have used the black bucket red sea salt in terms past the coral pro . I haven't experienced the brown sludge myself but you are not the first to mention it. WATER CHANGES ARE EVERYTHING! ☺....in all my time in this nothing fixes more or gets my corals happy more than a water change. Aqua forest looks real good stuff not cheap but u get what u pay for. Yes I've read about the probiotic content here's what I liked reading about it ...'The micronutrients and macronutrients contained in the formula fully fulfill the demand of corals for proper growth and pigmentation. Probiotic bacteria contained in the salt reduce the content of nitrates and phosphates, and prevents the growth of pathogenic bacteria in the marine aquarium' . Please let me know how it is. I'll buy some if it works well. thanks for watching again. Grant .

    TEXAS ! I'm from texas ... great video I've been following you and your nopox experience. I have been dosing my system for about 2 weeks

    • @Grantygrantyb
      @Grantygrantyb 8 лет назад

      hey there. Texas was great stayed in Houston as a starting point at the hyatt. I have stopped nopox all together . the negative effects of the dosing completely took the energy and life out of my tank despite dosing reef energy and building up the dose gradually skimming wet blah blah blah every trick In the book red sea advises ...my tank is 100 times better without it and will use bio pearls for nutrient control instead. I lost 8 or more corals dosing nopox and hadn't lost and coral I years on and nylon system prior . good luck in your dosing journey though.
