Hey matt. Just a note. Make sure you check out your trailer wheel hub bearing. Having them getting in and out of water and especially in salt water wears out the lube inside the bearing. Last you want is a failed hub or worst a wheel falling off.

Just happened to me on a recent salmon fishing trip in Tillamook Bay Oregon. We were coming down the grade between Salem and Hebo when the wheel started to come off the trailer. Put on a smal chain or a few splitrings on the hook, that will make it easier with the barbless hook. The fish tend to use the longside of the hook as leverage to break free but with some flex between the hook and the line will make you loos less fish, or you probably know this already 👍

Hey Matts, thanks for all of your videos, they're really therapeutic and inspiring, you remind me a lot of my brother honestly, in appearance (which is strange in it's own) and can-do attitude. I've been watching you for the past 3 years now and one thing I've always wanted to see is some basic how to videos that explain some of the setups you might use for say a lake/river/ocean and how to actually rig it up there's a lot of terminology that I never truly understand like what a leader is and how to gauge the length. My dad never really got a chance to teach me that kind of stuff beyond how to put a bobber and a hook on the line (I just tie a random knot to secure it all).
It would be really helpful to have some videos like that in your how-to section so I can reference them when I go out. Maybe it's lazy of me to ask this since it can all be googled, but the way you explain things make so much more sense. I plan on driving highway 101 again with the wife one of these days to go fishing, hopefully we'll meet someday man.

Nice experiment! You should try using circle hooks and see how that compares. Here are some tips when using circle hooks:
    1. Use a snell knot to ensure a better hook up ratio (main line should exit from the front of the eye).
    2. Let the fish swallow the bait and don't set the hook! Only reel in quickly when the rod starts to bend.
    3. Leave plenty of hook gap (don't crowd the hook with bait).

  • @davehenderson64
    @davehenderson64 3 года назад

Here in British Columbia, all streams have to be fished with single barbless hooks. Makes it more challenging but you dont have to lose so many. First thing, never let your rod go below 30 degrees from above horizontal. You`ll have to adjust your drag as you go to keep proper tension. Try a medium action or lighter rod to keep a good flex and the line under tension. Try not to play the fish on the surface or they`ll spit that hook much easier. Let it have a bit of line to keep it down. Bring it up at first sign of being tired and you have to be fast with the net. Netting the fish is the riskiest part. because of regulations etc i`ve gone completely barbless and land most fish. Takes some getting used to but is alot more fun. Even my kids when they were young could bring in nice fish on the Columbia River. if you develop a good technique, you will be keeping more fish on than losing them. Good luck and good fishing.

In my Recreational boat between two anglers we caught at least 300 Salmon (Spring Chinook 70, Sockeye 25, Coho 150, Fall Chinook which I don't care much about 75) last year fishing the Columbia/Willamette River in Oregon. When we were fishing barbed in the Willamette River for Springer's we landed approx 65% of our "stuck tight" fish with bites sticking about 50% of the time. In the Columbia River we have to fish barbless (unfortunately) and for Chinook the landing ratio was about 30% best case with a 50% hook-up ratio. For Sockeye/Coho with barbless was about 20% best case. But the strikes are where it really hurts when only 10% stick at all and then land 20% of those. With barbs (at least for the Coho) you land 40% with about a 35% hookup ratio. This is my experience

A bar-bless octopus or siwash hook hooked in the corner of the mouth of a salmon, combined with a slow action rod, rarely come out. a hook up any where else is a crap shoot for sure. Trebles are catch 22. They never hook up in the corner of the mouth and tend to to hook up in the softer parts of a salmons mouth like the roof or the tongue and can tear out easily especially with big salmon. With bar-bless the slower action of the rod is plus for sure.

Where i live in BC all streams and rivers are single barbless only. I feel like those regulations make the most sense as usually the wild stocks at risk are in rivers. That leaves trebles to be used in lakes and salt water. Barbless if you intend to catch and release morally tho

    • @tylerhall2468

The one thing I would definitely recommend is to loosen your drag, from as far as I can tell you didnt have any drag at all. Here in Canada pretty much everything except for saltwater jigging is illegal with barbs, so usually we like to tire out the fish (salmon) by playing it. So it cant do anything crazy then spit the hook.😁

When I lived in the Bay Area and fished the fleet in SF I loved fishing off a party boat out through the gate towards Pacifica when the strippers ran down the coast. Not gut hooking is definitely the way to go.I also buy the one time use hooks because they break down faster so the fish can move on with it's life.

The secret to using barbless hooks is constant line tension. Any slack allows the hook to slip out. So, the old saying 100% applies, keep your lines tight.

Ok, so about those barbless hooks, you need to ditch the little bait rings. They are preventing the hook from penetrating fully. You are right about the fish coming in hot at the surface and thrashing there but also that, in combo with those heavy sinkers flinging around, is a good recipe for losing the fish. It's not just the barbless for sure. Your friend especially needs some skills playing the fish as well.

Make sure you always check the fishing regulations for area you're fishing, and what it is you're fishing for. In Washington, here in the Puget Sound we pinch the barbs. If you keep your rod tip up while line constantly tight, set drag just tight enough to where you can still gain on the fish, but also have it loose enough so fish can run on you if it wants to without pulling hook out of the mouth. The key is to take your time reeling in the fish. Let it take off and run on you just don't let it spool you. Keep the line away from other lines that may be down still, and of course the motor. Can't wait for Halibut to open up. Going to be hitting it hard, starting the 22nd of next month.

I have been using that method for years, to get rid of line twist. You can also use it in rivers and streams. You just have to me more careful. Works great.

Use longer and softer rods. Tip from fly fishing.
    If I use my 8f6 7wt with a fast action, I'm going to lose alot. But with a 10ft 3wt, I hold 3 grayling over 4lbs

I only use barbless for catch and release fishing, or if it's required by law. Barbed hooks are vital for salmon trolling especially with anchovies

I like barbless because it doesn't mess up my net and usually if i net a fish they shake the barbless hook off so they just make the release easier.
Btw your line twist trick probably works in rivers with a lot of current👍 tight lines

When you use barbless, keep pressure and when the fish starts to head shake near the surface, bring the rod tip down and maintain pressure... Makes catching fish a little bit more intense... LOL

If you're using barbless hooks use a little bit of yarn. The yarn will get stuck in their teeth making it hard for them to spit the hook.
