Many protests were met with force WITHOUT any violence, completely peaceful people who are getting shot. The crowds shouldn’t be throwing garbage and bottles and lighting up buildings and cars, then they wouldn’t be tear gassed. The police were lenient with them the first couple of nights. Then things got out of control and they had to do what was necessary, and that was the order of the governors and mayors (who are dems by the way). Stop provoking the fight.

Unfortunately some people are opportunistic and see a chance to burn and pillage. Watch some of the interviews from the peaceful protests today, they don’t want people burning and looting, it distracts from the true cause

It doesn't reflect what is happening in Portland. The city is on it's fourth night of curfew. I'm told that the mayor is refusing to allow the police to enforce the curfew (not verified). It is as bad as anywhere else. There are good people everywhere who are trying to protest peacefully, but Portland is as bad as most of the others.

This is how we need police to act at these protests! With compassion and solidarity with the people!
Maybe it would be easier to show compassion if local business's, rich individuals homes and clothing stores weren't burned down. Or if people didn't assume that every police officer is bad because the actions of a couple. Or maybe if violent protesters didn't drag people out of their vehicles, rob them and beat them to death. Or maybe if protesters didn't rape multiple woman, kidnap a black woman, and now they cant find her because the police are to busy dealing with the protesters. (Search it up, there's a investigation going on as we speak.) Protesting shouldn't be violent, and the more violent the protesters act, the more deaths and bad actions from police will occur. (Because their forced to use lethal methods to disperse rioters)
Regardless, I think it's inane and immature to tell police to act compassionate at protests. There's a clear difference between protests and riots.

Trivium THERE’s a DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PROTESTERS and RIOTERS/LOOTERS.
Just like there’s a difference between individual cops. Like these ones understood the pain and anger the protesters were feeling, so they showed compassion rather than incited violence.

However, this is how you show you're listening. And when people feel heard, they feel validated. And when people feel validated, healing can begin. And when healing begins, real change can occur. yeah it would be good work if 30 mins later they didn't shoot the protesters with tear gas 3 hours before curfew while it was still peaceful. This was just for the cameras nothing more fake support

One word: chivalry. The cops are respecting the protesters and the protesters are respecting them.
Chivalry is a 2-sided coin. It means being gentle with the meek and fierce with the proud. Having an angry mob demand you show obedience and do what you are told, as an authority figure, you have completely undermined what you want to do, which is to control and prevent an angry mob.

There are like 3 black people at this event. This is not how protest goes. This was a feel good moment and nothing more. There was no lasting change. No effort was made to change a system that is nationally corrupted. Police can no longer be allowed to police themselves. We need an outside agency whose only purpose is to seek out corruption in the police department and investigate all accusations of wrong doing and any incident where someone is killed. We need to reexamine qualified immunity and at the very least insure that it is no longer used to help criminal cops escape legal ramifications. It was a nice gesture for the cops to take a knee for the white crowd of protesters. The 3 black people in Portland probably feel much safer knowing that their police are in solidarity with them, but what happens if they decide to visit the rest of the United States?
