I listened to both versions, the Queen and Mrs. Knight, I love both of them. The Queen's voice just touch my soul. I love her version, I like Mrs. Knight version. I love both of these ladies though. ❤❤

This is one of my favorite songs from Aretha: feeling, interpretation, love to do, arrangement. All under the direction of Mr. Van McCoy. Interestingly, Aretha's best songs, arrangements and interpretations were under the direction and composition of these two masters of music: Chuck Jackson (Search On (1981), United Together (1980) and You (1975)) and Van McCoy (Sweet Bitter Love and Remember Me (early sixties), Walk Softly (1975) and You Brought Me Back To Life Again (1979).

Excuse me, but the correct thing is that the wonderful backing vocals are from Brenda Bryant, Cissy Houston, Margareth Branch and Pam Vincent.

Aretha’s version is beautifully sung, but Gladys knights version is a little bit softer. I just love the way she sings it. But both are great.i enjoy both Artist. They are and always will be 🙏🏾🎼🎵🎶🎤🎤👠👠🎹❤️❤️the Queen and the Empress of Soul. I really don’t like to compare them, because I like them both.

Marlena Shaw made this in 1977. But of course, Ree's version is better! No offense to anyone. Just my opinion.

Just did and I have to agree which is hard for me to say as I am a diehard Aretha fan. Then again, I have huge respect for Gladys Knight and her vocal delivery. There are actually some similarities in their phrasing at times, the difference being Aretha's range and perhaps power. They are both stone-cold soul singers who grew up in church. That is certainly evident in Aretha's style but Gladys is right there for me. I think some sleep on Gladys because she doesn't have as wide a range.

Marlene and the Waters" version is the only one beside Re's that moves me. Gladys and the Pips later version with that phoned in spoken intro and Vegas arrangement ruins the vibe. Coasting. Aretha is sobbin and Marlena is tellin her story.

I adore Aretha, she is unquestionably a legend and I have almost all her work. This is a beautiful song, yet........ When I compare this version to Gladys Knight's later interpretation in 1977, I have to conclude that Gladys's softer, subtler rendition is the more poignant. Normally, Aretha's soaring passion holds me immediately, but I think Gladys got it right with this one. Give Gladys a listen, and make up your own mind.

My FAVORITE version of this song is my MARLENA SHAW, from her 1977 album "Sweet Beginnings," featuring her hit songs, "Yu-Ma/Go Away Little Boy" and "Pictures And memories."

Malcolmromeo oh most definently!!! i aint tryin to take nothing from lady aretha!! but glady's version is just untouchable.
i mean, both singers had songs which they outright just owned!! and this one just happend to belong to glady's hands down.
once again, not tryin to disrespect queen aretha at all!!
