This has to have been someone’s villain origin story. No way it wasn’t
Dr. Doofenshmirtz
For real dude it’s a joker moment…” Inviting me on the show. You just wanted to make fun of me”
it’s staged
What do you get... when you cross a talented singer... with a society that abandons him?!
that guy totally freaked and now kills superstars and producers
This show is like in high school when the “popular kids” pretended to befriend and gas up a “weird kid” when in reality they were just laughing at them behind their back. All of these judges and producers peaked in high school for sure
In 7th grade I was voted class president and was really happy and surprised when they announced the results and then when I went to the front to say thank you, a classmate stood up and yelled "HAHAHA WE JUST PRANKED YOU, NO ONE WOULD REALLY WANT U AS A CLASS PRESIDENT HAHAHAHA ITS A JOKE" but the teacher didn't understand what that was supposed to mean and we couldn't retake them anyways so instead it was just a really awkward year for me.
This show feels like my school bullies grew up and decided to bring their combined creativity on live television
yeah this show just felt like i was in middle school again getting bullied for being 'weird' lol, i was physically cringing at how awful these people are

i thought the same thing , even if it sounds crazy i’m surprised not one person tried to go after them after being completely humiliated infront of millions of people watching
"What do you get when you cross a tone-deaf blonde girl with an audience that laughs at her and treats her like trash? You get what you fucking deserve!"
And then she tries to hit Mariah Carey notes or something and everyone dies of second-hand embarrassment.
No. This is dinner for schmucks. Literally dinner for schmucks. Good movie. Steve Carrell, Paul Rudd, Zach Galifianakis. Rich dudes plan a dinner for losers just to make fun of them. It ends better than this show that’s for sure.
Maybe that one guy's buddy Eric was on this show.
The guy wasn't even bad at singing, they just chose him cause he looks nerdy. This is just high school level bullying on a national level.
I was serious vibing with him
@@commando_barrage501 Right? He was hella on key and had rhythm. Both contestants could be successful in entertainment in their own ways and it's so brutal to think about how this like.. Humiliation affected them. They both literally do have entertainment abilities, let alone terrible, nobody deserves this.
Dude if he held a concert I’d go, I was vibing every time he did his little dances with the songs
All kinds of musicians look nerdy. Looking nerdy is actually an asset with some audiences. Songs like "Creep" don't go down nearly as well if you're handsome. The second guy was just nervous, he needs to learn to let go and sell himself.
@@cisium1184 I just imagined a very attractive man singing creep and it gave me serial killer vibes
The make-a-wish part absolutely KILLED me. What the fuck 00's TV.
It feels like they were making the show up as they went along and had pull the make-a-wish thing out of nowhere. I refuse to believe they had the forethought to think that up from the start

She was trying to save face by laughing along with it but honestly, it's so satisfying to be frank. In 9th grade it got out that I had a crush on this popular boy and everyone thought it was a freaking riot. In the middle of science class, I raised my hand to ask a question and the whole class burst into fits of giggling. My teacher was confused obviously and trying to play into it asking if he had a booger or something. In a clear, dispassionate voice I said, "No. They're laughing at me." It went dead quiet instantly. The point is, laughing along only makes mean-spirited people more comfortable. Letting them feel the tension created by their cruelty is the best reaction. It's a lesson I carried with me.
one i learned as an adult. probably the biggest thing i wish i could go back and tell my younger self. i respect that you were able to learn that rather than internalizing how they were treating you
My whole life my dad has been telling really inappropriate jokes, sarcastic humor targeted at one person or a group people whether it be racist, sexist, or homophobic. He’s the type of person who, when you say your going out with friends “jokingly” responds, “I didn’t know you had friends?!”
I spent a lot of my life pretending to laugh at jokes like these. I was a teenager, he was an authority figure and I didn’t know how to stand up to him.
Slowly as I got older I would make my laughter more and more fake, trying to make it obvious that I didn’t actually find these jokes funny.
Several years ago I started not laughing. Often times this is met with something like “Oh come on, I was just joking!” To which I almost always calmly say “I know I just don’t find it funny.”
Where things go from there typically varies, sometimes he doubles down on his just joking, sometimes he “apologizes” and says he needs to stop joking; his apologies almost always include a but, never include attempting to stop the behavior, and typically include chastising me for getting upset in the first place, it’s something I guess.
Lately though, his response is defensive again, like “I don’t get what’s the problem; I’ve always been like this.”
This brings me to the main point of my story, I highly regret spending most of my life pretending to laugh when my dad was making jokes at mine and other people’s expense because now he thinks the problem is with me, not with him because I “suddenly” changed and started having a problem with him even though he’s always been this way.
I implore everyone out there, if you don’t find something funny, have the courage not to laugh.
@@MaryAlice08 he sounds funny to me
@@MaryAlice08 the "I didn't know you had friends" joke is funny. Though if you were bullied and didn't have friends for a while I could see it could hit a nerve.
@@em84c well first I’d say I think a lot of people probably felt bullied and alone at some point in their lives.
Also young kids don’t really understand sarcasm, you can explain that it’s a joke and not serious but it’s still likely to effect them when you’re poking fun at their weaknesses and insecurities. I think whether or not you have friends, especially when you’re a kid, the insecurity that you’re unlikable is a common one.
Also I’m not exaggerating when I say he says this every time anyone says something involving the concept of friends. All 30+ years of my life. I honestly don’t understand how *he* still finds it funny the billionth time.

I've heard they did lie on hot or not saying it was a modeling show, but I don't know how true it was
The show was fake. Pretty much all of the "reality" tv shows in that era were fake. The blonde girl that "won" is an actress. In the same year she was in an episode of NYPD Blue.
Its hella funny
The fact that we also still have pageant shows is to me an argument we (or media) have learned nothing from mistakes like Hot or Not, and similar shows.
This show is the definition of gaslighting.
Yep. This people will have confidence issues big enough to don’t even trust their own reflection in the mirror. This beyond fucked up level.
Imagine being an actually good singer, but you stop trying because of these people.
FR that’s so fucked up.
Or in their case, not being talented but actually having the will to learn and get better and you get put in this shit.
There's usually a lot of self doubt most creators have, and so this could totally happen
If you let some c-list “celebrities” crush your dreams that easily, I reckon you didn’t have the juice to begin with. 🤷🏻♀️
And then you find out months later what the competition actually was.
The worst part is they never really fully revealed the prank to her, they were just vaguely like "youre not actually the BEST singer in the united states okay moving on look how much these people love you"
Also I'm pretty sure the prize of a record deal for hundreds of thousands of dollars was real and she did get to record it. Of course it didn't go anywhere, but she definitely got a better deal out of it than the other finalists. The girl on the show doesn’t even have an irredeemably terrible voice, she’s just totally untrained and trying to sound like a pop star. Her timbre isn’t offensive, with training and a simpler style she could have a very pleasant singing voice. A show where people who are like these people and have terrible habits and big egos learning to actually sing properly could actually maybe be interesting. But this was just a mess.
Ok thebadpoet
I thought she wasn’t that bad like idk she did just need training
Exactly what I was thinking. She also seemed like a really nice girl. A lot of the folks on American Idol have bad voices AND big egos, so they seriously need to be taken down a few pegs. But the girl and guy on this show did not deserve any of this! I almost cried at the end during the reveal, it was so brutal : (
As a singer, she was stylistically awful and her singing My Heart Will Go On? Totally started off in the wrong key and that’s not even the worst part. I feel like everyone is saying they feel worse for the guy cause the girl is attractive, but i feel bad for both of them equally. The girl was just positive and had a can-do attitude. She smiled through being sexually harassed by some neck beard for her entire time in the "competition". And at the very end she gets told on center stage, flashing lights pointed at her, in front of hundreds of people in a live audience, that she sucks. And she STILL had to put on a smiling face through it all cause what tf else is she supposed to do??? I loved the guy and i feel so horrible for him, but i honestly would have rather gotten told in a small room and had my reaction cut. What they did to him was a disgusting prank. What they did to her was Carrie with the pigs blood levels of fucked up.
No I 100% agree with this, most people (including Cody and Kelsey) saying not feeling bad for the girl is probably because she is attractive and had a positive attitude towards things. What happened to her is equally (or comparably worse) bad compared to the guy. What a horrible thing to do to a human being :(
i agree what they did to her was equally as bad as what they did to him. but to only feel bad for him bc he’s unattractive is sexist because it’s just treating her as an object to laugh at rather than an actual person who would hurt by all of this just as equally as a man
Agreed! That kind of upset me because I couldn't stop thinking how much genuine trauma this must have caused the girl, why wouldn't we feel terrible for her?
@@okaytessa2481 I think we generally assume that attractive people will be fine because they always have their looks to fall back on. But we forget that everyone is equally human, regardless of how they look, and attractive people experience just as much trauma as the rest of us.

American idol and America’s got talent actually used to do this to a lesser extent, all the contestants would go through several rounds of auditions before actually auditioning for the celebrity judges and being on tv. The bad singers/acts would make it through the first few rounds, so they thought they were really good, and then the celebrity judges would break the news that they’re actually bad. @@oriannaisabella7041 Why?. It was the good part of the show
I feel worse for the girl. The dude seemed like he straight up doing it for himself, he had a good confidence. The girl seemed to really get her confidence from the judges praise. Felt harsher.
Idk I feel bad for both of them. But the girl is conventionally hot and super outgoing so she probably has had a better time in life in general. The guy is kind of a funky looking shy dude so I imagine he hasnt had as easy as a time, socially. Just making assumptions, but it's sad either way.
@@Goat.Cheese well those 'outgoing ' people you see probably base more of their happiness on other people and the fact that all these ppl did this , is gonna be traumatic.
@@Goat.Cheese Just because someone is conventionally attractive and appears outgoing does not mean they will handle this better. She could've been suicidal before the show and we would've never known.

I know it's an old show but Cody should find Jamie and see how she's doing and just get an update on both contestants because I truly feel bad they did this to them
Idk, if this was me that is absolutely the last thing I'd want to happen.
from what I found, she got $50k and a recording deal for winning the show, she went to school for journalism, and it seems like she's married with kids now. but mario, the runner up, won $10k which he used to bring his fiancé from Germany to the US and marry her but they split up and she married a woman she met online :(
@@nicolesanna3959 poor guy 😔
If you listen closely, you'll notice that for My Heart Will Go On, they had Jamie start in an EXTREMELY high key! It's much higher than the original, to the point where even professional singers would have a hard time reaching those notes! This makes me think that she sounded pretty good in the original key, so the producers made her sing this monstrosity. Because, you know, why leave these contestants with a shred of dignity?
Nah. She just has 0 contr so the tones were random.
Honestly I don’t think either of the contestants had bad voices to begin with. If they were given vocal coaches in the beginning and advice I can see them doing well! This is a really messed up show but I feel like the show not acknowledging the good points in their singing was what made this beyond mean. Rhythm and range can be improved over time 😤😭
the guy singing “celebrate good times “ could not be helped with a coach let’s be honest

I remember back in the 00s that pop culture in general was just really mean. There was this edgy, "we don't give a fuck" attitude to everything. Whether it was celebrity coverage or reality shows, there was a prevailing mean spiritedness.
I mean it was funny, but you felt gross after
TV content was really like that, and also in teen movies and shows there was such an admiration for the mean girl, Blair Waldorf / Regina George were popular characters.... Everybody knows they're mean but for kids it was so cool back then i remember it well, overall it was mean as hell, we've gotten better now but there's so many other issues we didn't have so i guess it's life
Holy fuck I just realized this entire show is basically the episode of it's always sunny where they make Dee think she's a super popular comedian.
Oh my god THATS what I was being reminded of thank you that was gonna bug me all day lmao
EXACTLY
thats spot on lmao
YES
Honestly, at least in that episode they were honest with her at the end and didn't gaslit her into thinking it was somehow still good.
The thing about some of these people with “bad” voices is that with the right training and practice, they could be really good! Learning correct singing technique, breathing, performance, and rhythm can help someone improve exponentially. It’s not fair to write someone off immediately for being a “bad” singer if they haven’t had the right training but I guess that’s what shows like these are all about
i'm sad that i can only like this comment once because this is so goddamn true! like straight up, simon cowell fucked up our perceptions of singing where most "bad" singers are singing off key as their base, and that's literally such an easy fix because there are pianos and pitch apps to help train your ear to what notes sound like, and if you have even a decent teacher, they'll teach you the basics of rationing your air and how to use your whole body in your voice. and like high key, the good singers who say they've never had training, i'm gonna go out on a limb and say they probably have never had formal training where it's like 1:1 with a teacher or a chorus. like if they go to church regularly or if they have a parent or relative who was even slightly musically inclined, they'd probably receive the basics of how notes should sound and what have you. ugh i could write a fucking thesis on this.
Honestly if the show found the bad singers and then competed to see who could improve the most with training, that would have been cool
@@toril2160 That would be the best show ever!
for real! the guy had a decent voice and he wasn't terribly off key! with a little teaching he'd be a good singer! maybe not, like, the next huge pop star, but he'd kill it at karaoke!
For real like the first girl was actually lowkey pretty good

i feel bad for the guy but idk i definitely feel worse for the girl since she not only had her dreams crushed in front of the entire audience but also the entire season had to put up with that one judge non-stop sexually harassing her. obviously though none of the contestants were treated well. they were all gaslit on the national stage and had their dreams crushed based on a lie.

Jamie wasn’t even bad! She was just too extra and needs some vocal lessons. Study matching pitch and she’d probably be fine in no time tbh. I feel so bad for her she’s so chipper through it all
Yeah, I think she had potential if she just had some lessons and some more experience. This show is just super cruel though.
i thought the same, she has potential but she doing too much with her voice.

Can you guys react to “Extreme makeover”? (It’s also from the early 2000s)
They gave contestants plastic surgery, lasik eye surgery, braces, etc. and made them lose weight vigorously for 6-12 months. I actually enjoyed that show as a kid since they recruited insecure, bullied people and turned them into bombshells, I thought it was mind blowing.
I really miss that show tbh, cause in here at least they also took in people who needed sort of restorative plastic surgery. I remember one woman who battled breast cancer and unfortunately lost one of her breasts. She got on the show and at the end she was so happy! She could finally wear the clothes she wanted and looked soooo confident in herself.
