I love the Word Bearers precisely because of how evil they are, and one thing I actually noticed recently is that besides their grudge against the Ultramarines, they also act as a pretty good foil, being the zealous faithful to the Ultramarine's dutiful rationality
They're also very similar which makes them even better foils. Both legions were recruited from the sons of defeated enemies who refused to the bitter end to submit. Whereas the Ultramarines' geneseed encourages deference to authority and teamwork the Word Bearers were forced to learn the sins of their fathers by the Emperor and his genewrights and went into the Great Crusade motivated by shame and penitence alone. Naturally though, as we well know, to develop children into adulthood through a heavy complex of shame and guilt does NOT breed healthy functional self sufficient individuals. Both legions were also jacks of all trades and really didn't specialize outside of UM being known for their logistical abilities and rapid deployments. Word Bearers specialized only fighting to the death in the name of a cause proving that having enough conviction IS a strategic asset and later daemonancy/dark rituals. Both legions are also known for their fearlessness and valor in spite of certain allies of theirs. Kind of why I don't vibe with giving Black Legion marines the best leadership when it should be WB as they're not afraid to die in the name of the Dark Gods like most traitor legion warbands nowadays

I have to say I like them. They brought the whole Heresy! I find it very interesting that I almost never met someone who plays them in 40K. But in Horus Heresy a lot of people play word bearers.
"From the fires of Betrayal unto the blood of revenge we bring the name of Lorgar, the Bearer of the Word, the favored Son of Chaos, all praise be given to him. From those that would not heed we offer praise to those who do, that they might turn their gaze our way and gift us with the Boon of Pain, to turn the Galaxy red with the blood, and feed the hunger of the Gods."
Funny thing about the Word Bearers. Both after and during the worlds that remained most loyal to the Imperium were the worlds that the Words Bearers had brought into compliance.
great description and a huge reason on why I dislike the wordbearers but have immense respect for them theyre well written and such an interesting story that shows how easily manipulation and the need for outside influence can change things/people, they also make me like the ravenguard so much more with their direct conflict and especially corvus' personal vendetta against lorgar and almost killing him twice, theyre not a faction I "feel" for in the slightest but theyre a faction i am thoroughly impressed by
I dont know where GW is planning to take Lorgar in the current state of events, but i imagine his end goal be something akin to what Grifith from Berserk manga series did. Or speaking of manga imagine the universe of Dorohedoro, demons and humans coexisting in a weird chaotic balance. Grim picture but not without its beauty i say.
Imo the Word Bearers are one of the most interesting factions in 40k, and Lorgar himself is one of the most interesting primarchs. I think the insights you get from them in their books are the closest any 40k novel really comes to engaging with its own fucked-up theological questions. For as dangerous and terrible they are, you get the feeling that they're the types who would joyfully and earnestly sit you down and explain at length why what we think is good is actually bad and what we think is bad is actually good before deciding whether or not you're worth further instruction or if they're just gonna spike ya.
The word bearers understand the truth of the setting greater then any other faction, though world eaters/orks exemplify the truth better. Every struggle, every shining moment of valor, every win, every defeat, everything that makes the setting rich and vibrant ultimately serves the gods. Even if the sentient warp storms blow themselves out one day this truth will remain. There is no real escape.
WBs are interesting simply because unlike most of the other traitor legions they genuenly do believe they're doing the right thing because they see power as divine and the divine can do no wrong. Their perception of reality is not being warped like the Death Guard or World Eaters, diluted like the Emperor's Children, nor are they cynical like the Black Legion or Thousand Sons. No, they looked into the abyss and when it looked back they didn't break, they didn't lose their minds, they fully embraced its cold piercing gaze with a smile on their face and simply said "God hates us and I am here to spread their message." Word Bearers are true psychopaths. They have no sense of empathy yet their cruelty is juxtaposed by a presentation akin to preachers which are commonly associated with peace and harmony. They're almost like a harbinger of cosmic horror, uncaring and without prejudice they represent the will of the dark gods.
Shadows of the Past short story. With Corvax and Lorgar. If Lorgar comes back I think they will have to bring Corvax back as well with what is set up in that story.
My ideal return primarch lineup is vulkan corax dorn the khan lion and guilliman. Not every loyalist primarch coming back makes it more interesting to me. And since lorgar is basically back, I AM EXCITED FOR THAT. thanks for watching!
So Lorgar was pushed to chaos because he was punished by the Emperor for worshipping him as a god and now, the word bearers are fighting the imeprium of man who worship the Emperor as a god 😂
That’s why I like them. They were right about everything, got what they wanted, they are the only winners from the entire heresy and they must piss themselves laughing when they see black templars, sisters of battle etc
Oh no he did, the entire first chapter of the book details how the ultramarines are badgering the civilians to get out of the city. Thanks for watching!
They’re the one Legion that achieved their ultimate goal: find their true Gods and do their bidding for all time…doesn’t matter how or who gets the job done, as long as it moves chaos as a whole forward in the setting, they’re happy. Also their undivided status allows autonomy from the shackles of one God or another. You nailed it man great job
I love to read 40K lore and learn philosophy and history from the perspective of humanity's nature. It's interesting how insane and simply dumb their idea and actions are. Yet real life has been the same. And a lot of it can be seen as inspiration for the 40K lore.
Ive always imagined the way Word Bearers were taking over worlds kinda like how the Taliban and ISIS operates, especially in the way they go after the history in the region. For example, the IS tortured and beheaded the archaeologist Khaled al-Asaad because he refused to disclose where the ancient sites near Palmyra are

I hate the Word Bearers more than any legion, and yet, they don’t do anything nearly as awful as the other legions, yet they do nothing nearly as awful as their cousin legions, which I find interesting.
Yes they do. Anthony Reynolds' Word Bearers Omnibus covers this. They're just as vile as a Night Lord or Emperor's Children marine, it's just that unlike the Night Lord they actually believe in their ideology. And unlike the Noise Marine he worships three other malevolent deities doing all the atrocities they tell him to commit as well
Fair enough but as long as you don't bring that hate into the real world against people like me who just want to play a table top game as the word bearers and ain't morally judging people because of the army those chose to play it's fine, I feel like this needs to be said because wow do some people take 40k lore way to seriously and thinks it gives them a right to straight up verbally abuse you and hate you.
What are you talking about? The word bearers are horrifyingly evil. They were the first ones to start doing human sacrifices, first possessed marines and other than nightlords they are the ones I would think of to have trophies, crucifying their enemies and hanging them on their tanks etc… I would say they are the third most horrifying (would not want to get caught by) legion after EC and NL
@@unclesamlore oh nice! Ill take a peek to confirm it and then rub it in some smurf faces! Thanks for covering my favorit legion without taking a piss out of them xD
While faith is an important part, they first sought out truth. They spread the emperor as a god because lorgar believes it to be true. He now worships the chaos gods for the same reason, so in many ways it is both! Thanks for watching!
It's ironic that the punishment of the word bearers basically started the heresy, but asoon as it started Ufratie keelar started the divisioe divinitis / cult of the emporer and became a saint .... Shoulda maybe just let lorgar/ word bearers keep doing there thing...' I'm only on the book fulgrim' so if this all blows up don't ruin it for me
Where the other legions fight the Imperium through sheer military might, the Word bearers fight the Imperium by targeting it's very heart and soul, it's faith. For them, it's not a war fought with weapons, tanks and fleet formations. It's a war of ideas. A war fought with words. A war for the very hearts and minds of every human in the galaxy. What good is there to having the best most advance wargear if you have no men with the faith in your cause to be willing to fight for you, or worse, gladly take those weapons and use them on YOU cause you're an idiotic infidel TYRANNT that just unknowingly handed a weapon to your greatest enemy.
Any sufficiently advanced extraterrestrial intelligence is indistinguishable from God and any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. Not sure why the emps didn't grasp that to most average joe he's literally a God.
The weird thing is, he did. He knew that someone someway he would be considered one. His ending thoughts at the end and the death part 3 really lean towards that. Emps is such a good character. Thanks for watching!
I find it fascinating that unlike the other legions who worship the gods for personal gain, the word bearers see worshipping the gods as it’s own reward. I feel like deep down theyre pure hearted because they genuinely believed the emperor was their god and wanted to serve him the best they could. Same goes with how they worship chaos. And Lorgar especially is like the only primarch who actually cares about Angron’s wellbeing unlike the other primarchs who just see him as a rabid animal
Exactly. Lorgar and guilliman in a lot of ways are similar in the sense they can be warriors, but they don't excell as warriors. It's really quite fascinating and I really want that dynamic explored more! Thanks for watching!
That’s why I like them and think they are the quintessential chaos space marines. Black legion have this lame try hard attitude of “we’re just using chaos to our advantage but we don’t actually like it hur hur”…. Iron warriors and night lords mostly reject worshipping chaos and alpha legion are just dicking around
@@brya9681 yes and for one main reason. Other factions do what they think is correct and don't see it as evil, or just don't care. The word bearers thrive on doing what they know is evil but see it as necessary. It's not a moustache twirling evil for the sake of evil. It's evil because that is what their faith calls them to do. They feel justified in it despite knowing the acts they commit are by all measure, heinous. It's a nice reversal of the comically evil trope seen in fiction. Either way thanks for watching!
I have a deep sympathy for Lorgar and hatred for the so called Imperial Truth, not simply because as Lorgar himself put it, it's a blatant lie, but because it's not even rationalistic or progressive. Many of the horrible aspects of the Imperial Creed originate from the Imperial Truth verbatum. The Emperor or Fabous Bile can say all they want about how "it's not magic, demons, and gods, it's energy being drawn forth from a parallel dimension and sometimes that energy condenses into conscious extra-dimensional aliens", but the setting feels like it implicitly states that that's a semantic argument, a distinction without meaning. The hatred of mutants, xenos, and heretics was still a part of the Imperial Truth, and maybe it's better explained by in universe texts and arguments that hasn't been shown to us, the audience, but there's no real genuinely rational explanation for why, other than "The Emperor says so", other than maybe heritics, but I'll come back to that in a minute. There's no rational reason to value the "baseline" human form so much, especially since that baseline is itself the result of millions of small mutations. Sure, many mutations can be considered harmful, such as crippling genetic disorders or the Orgryn severly diminished intelligence, but they don't constitute an outright ban, at least under no RATIONAL mindset. Sure many humans suffered under alien tyrants and there are many inherintly hostile alien species in the galaxy, but sheer statics states that there must be at least some alien species that are both compatible and useful towards humanity. There's no rational argument for humanity being special and more diserving of galactic dominance than any other sentient species. The fact that other species had galactic spanning civilizations and failed doesn't justify humanity trying, especially since humanity themselves had been onof those failed empires by the time of the Great Crusade. The hatred of heretics can at least be argued justified in position that other ideologies are holding humanity back and fracturing our species, which makes us as a whole weaker and vulnerable, but it doesn't make an adequate argument for why the Imperial Truth is the one true philisopical worldview. The best we ever really get to see is some tired arguments about "people have gone to war over religion", or "science has shown that there's no chariot pulling the sun, or Sky Daddy throwing lightning bolts". At the end of the day, the Imperial Truth was nothing more than a religion trying to masquerade as a secular, rationalistc philosophy. Why the fuck was anyone surprised when Lorgar treated it as such.
The reason why I say truth is because that is what they were devoted to first, then after a time they became more zealotous, even when they were worshipping the emperor. It's a bit of a chicken or egg situation to be fair. Thanks for watching!
@@unclesamloreThat's not even true because they swore to the Imperial Truth, which even Malcador the Sigiliite admitted was a straight up lie to protect humans from Xenos and Chaos (that worked so well). They were always supposed to be the indoctrination legion built to win hearts and minds not just purge heretics and aliens
@@unclesamloreThe legion itself. The have this thing they do when they conquer a world which is to take millions of the world's population, human or Xenos, and liquefy them to use the "Blood Mortar" to build a massive Cathedral/Warp conduit referred to as the Gehemehnet that spreads chaotic corruption across the world making daemons not only easier to summon but also eventually transforming the planet into a Daemon World permanently.

Sad irony is,that the Emperor is the true reason, why Word Bearers have swore their allegiance to the Chaos. If Emperor wouldn't order to Ultramarines to destroy Monarchia, and would figure out how to turn their belief in him,as a god,in his own favour, then he could've receive powerful allies, true zealots, loyal to Emperor's cause to their core, till their last breath, ready to sacrifice their lives for the Emperor with no doubts. The fact, that Emperor have neglected Word Bearers, and their belief so harshly, was, probably one of a biggest mistakes,Emperor have made in period before Heresy. Also, fun fact is,that virtually entire religion of modern Imperium in Warhammer 40k is based completely on religious dogmas, that Lorgar Aurelian himself created long ago, before Heresy.
Yep! One of the emperors many failures. Thanks for watching!
@@unclesamlore the emperror was to be a god. Dark king? I am not sure about the new lore but basicly he really hate the idea of himself accending so he hate Lorgar preaching
Yeah ironically they were/would have just been black Templars if he hadn’t fucked them over
It's a good thing Corvus is keeping Lorgar busy
Home team for my boy Erebus, who is almost single-handedly responsible for the pants-on-head insanity that has been my most passionate winter hobby for the past quarter-century. Great characters, awesome narrative, cool colour scheme, all the modelling creativity that Chaos allows... truly the greatest of the Legiones Astartes.
I have to say, I loved the Word Bearer omnibus, the most memorable 40K series for me.
Oh absolutely! Love them to pieces! Thanks for watching!
Hell yes FINALLY a channel that does the Word Bearers justice!
So happy you enjoyed! Thanks for watching!
Bonus is that the word bearers omnibus got a new reprint somewhat recently so it isn’t impossible to find
Exactly! It's an excellent choice! Thanks for watching!
@@unclesamlore I made the mistake of buying the old version for double retail price on eBay about a month before the new printing became widely available
The Word Bearers continue to be the most interesting legion to me. Always love them getting attention
I agree! They are incredibly fascinating!
I have to say I like them. They brought the whole Heresy! I find it very interesting that I almost never met someone who plays them in 40K. But in Horus Heresy a lot of people play word bearers.
I'm surprised people don't play them in 40k! I plan on making an army of them whenever I get the chance! Thanks for watching!
I'm surprised people don't play them in 40k! I plan on making an army of them whenever I get the chance! Thanks for watching!
We exist! Tho to be fair I am more of an eternal painter/kitbasher rather than game-player
I always put that down to the uniqueness in their HH army with the gal vorbak etc. 40k just doesn't have the same amount going for them
"From the fires of Betrayal unto the blood of revenge we bring the name of Lorgar, the Bearer of the Word, the favored Son of Chaos, all praise be given to him. From those that would not heed we offer praise to those who do, that they might turn their gaze our way and gift us with the Boon of Pain, to turn the Galaxy red with the blood, and feed the hunger of the Gods."
LOVE ME GREAT POWERS. SIMPLE AS. thanks for watching!
Funny thing about the Word Bearers. Both after and during the worlds that remained most loyal to the Imperium were the worlds that the Words Bearers had brought into compliance.
Yeah exactly. I find that highly ironic. Thanks for watching!
Yay, my favorite legion! :D
The ultimate tragedy, and irony. Truly, they are more a symbol of 40k as a setting than anyone else in my eyes.
Oh absolutely! I love them to pieces, thanks for watching!
@unclesamlore you guys are weird 😂 im jk I love all the chaos space marines. EXCEPT the word bearers they are the worse. 😂😂😂😂😂
great description and a huge reason on why I dislike the wordbearers but have immense respect for them theyre well written and such an interesting story that shows how easily manipulation and the need for outside influence can change things/people, they also make me like the ravenguard so much more with their direct conflict and especially corvus' personal vendetta against lorgar and almost killing him twice, theyre not a faction I "feel" for in the slightest but theyre a faction i am thoroughly impressed by
Great video. We need more word bearer stuff around here
Thank you so much! Happy you enjoyed!
Yeah I agree! It's an interesting prospect! Thanks for watching!

Thank you! I'm happy you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
Oh absolutely. It is heartbreaking and fascinating all at the same time. Thanks for watching!
Loreguy is such a cool character
I LOVE LOREGUY WAHOO
@@unclesamlore HES SO BIG AND WISE
The word bearers understand the truth of the setting greater then any other faction, though world eaters/orks exemplify the truth better.
Every struggle, every shining moment of valor, every win, every defeat, everything that makes the setting rich and vibrant ultimately serves the gods. Even if the sentient warp storms blow themselves out one day this truth will remain. There is no real escape.
YUP. THEY ARE SO COOL. thanks for watching!
No, they looked into the abyss and when it looked back they didn't break, they didn't lose their minds, they fully embraced its cold piercing gaze with a smile on their face and simply said "God hates us and I am here to spread their message."
Word Bearers are true psychopaths. They have no sense of empathy yet their cruelty is juxtaposed by a presentation akin to preachers which are commonly associated with peace and harmony. They're almost like a harbinger of cosmic horror, uncaring and without prejudice they represent the will of the dark gods.
EXACTLY. GENUINELY. THIS IS A PERFECT SUMMARY. thank you so much for watching!

In the Shadow Crusade, Erebus used an ingredient for a spell that was something like, “ashes from betrayed kinsman”. They bad.
@@unclesamlore Yes Vulkan is on the top of my list as well with Corax second. If you haven’t read that story it’s a good setup for an epic battle.
I see a giant demon crow in lorgars future that’s craving to hand him another whooping
The pen is mightier than the sword.

The Emperor did not in fact evacuate Manarchia before having it orbitally bombarded.
Oh no he did, the entire first chapter of the book details how the ultramarines are badgering the civilians to get out of the city. Thanks for watching!
@@unclesamlore Guilliman tried that, but so far as I know, not on Emperor's order
Thanks dude! I'm happy you liked it! Thanks for watching!
I love to read 40K lore and learn philosophy and history from the perspective of humanity's nature.
It's interesting how insane and simply dumb their idea and actions are. Yet real life has been the same.
And a lot of it can be seen as inspiration for the 40K lore.
Lorgar did nothing wrong!
LORGAR IS BEST MAN
The false emperor had it coming
Am I remembering wrong or are the Word Bearers unique in that they are forming symbiotic pairings with demons? Like sharing bodies on even terms?
Yeah! Other legions have possessed marines but the word bearers do it the most!
Almost done reading the first heretic and yeah, all I can say is; pretty much.

They are the weird middle of the road that I find fascinating! Thanks for watching!

Dude very good good video! 👍
Truth? No. The word that summerizes the sons of Lorgar is "Faith."
their truth is their faith
While faith is an important part, they first sought out truth. They spread the emperor as a god because lorgar believes it to be true. He now worships the chaos gods for the same reason, so in many ways it is both! Thanks for watching!
Word bearers used to love and worship the Emperor.
Exactly! That is part of the reason I find them so engaging! Thanks for watching!
Lorgar met God, and saw that he hated them. Very aptly put.
NOW Can you do a 180 and do the atheist night lords?
I will in the next couple of months! I plan on covering all of the traitor legions! Thanks for watching!

Please, Lorgar is the epitome of a fence sitter, penning both the Lectitio Divintatus and the book of Lorgar.
Complete opposite of a fence sitter actually, he goes from one extreme to the other. Never in the middle
there is no evil. there is only indifference.
Lorgar would agree with you 😂 thanks for watching!
@@unclesamlore oh I haven't read that far, that's good to know! I always found it weird that the Emperor would so vehemently reject being worshipped.
Iron warriors and night lords mostly reject worshipping chaos and alpha legion are just dicking around
the most religious legion
Absolutely! Thanks for watching!
As opposed to any other faction lol?
@@brya9681 yes and for one main reason. Other factions do what they think is correct and don't see it as evil, or just don't care. The word bearers thrive on doing what they know is evil but see it as necessary. It's not a moustache twirling evil for the sake of evil. It's evil because that is what their faith calls them to do. They feel justified in it despite knowing the acts they commit are by all measure, heinous. It's a nice reversal of the comically evil trope seen in fiction. Either way thanks for watching!
Whys dmitry donskoy a spacemarine 😂
A legion of the zealous faithful are dangerous. A legion of the venerated faithful are monsters awaiting their divine orders.

The word to describe Word Bearers is not Truth. It's Zealotry. You did mention that later to be fair.
The reason why I say truth is because that is what they were devoted to first, then after a time they became more zealotous, even when they were worshipping the emperor. It's a bit of a chicken or egg situation to be fair. Thanks for watching!
@@unclesamlore Fair points. Word Bearers also have that skill of daemon wrangling which is worth some mention. Great video all around, well done.
