@@Salomon_G Thinking about the songs in the context of James's life, I'd say this one can be connected to his time in rehab in 2001/2, as it's about him facing himself and dealing with his own personal issues.
Hetfield grew up with parents who were Christian scientists and it was forced on him and his siblings leading to a lot of conflict. His dad walked out on them when James was 13. He didn’t even leave a note or letter. Then his mum passed away when he was 16 because she refused treatment for her illness due to their beliefs that god will heal her. Therefor he was a pissed off young man which you can understand why. He wrote his feelings towards his religion in the song “The God that Failed” on the black album. (Which you should do as it’s terrifically written). After he got sober in 2003 he said he found god again, but not necessarily a Christian or abrahamic god. More of a guardian angel or god that he has his own relationship with. Sorry for waffling on but I hope this sheds some light on his background.
I feel like the unforgiven series of songs are very personal to James Hetfield. It seems like he laid his soul out for all to see with these songs. He wrote them at the different phases of his life, that seem to match his personal story. It takes a brave person to bare their soul in this way. I also think that there is definitely a connection with the church in all the music. I really enjoyed that you reviewed all three of these songs. I routinely listen to all three consecutively. Through music, we can always take what we need from it.
Sound quality ✔ Video quality ✔ Almost unnoticeable but awesome background music of the song you are reacting to ✔ Honest opinions & feelings about the songs ✔ I love the new quality you guys are delivering! Keep it going Vin & Sori :)
Love watching you guys and how you dissect things so beautifully. As a metal head that didn't take Christ seriously until I was a married adult, it is awesome to find someone actually giving the music I love a chance from our family. Most of the time when I pull into the parking lot at church blaring this style I just get either disgusted grimaces or curious glances and not many want to know what it was. I'd love to see y'all get into the symphonic metal side of things with Nightwish - Ghost Love Score or Epica - Design Your Universe. Much Love
You guys need to react to Fixxxer by Metallica. It has a really deep meaning especially if you were raised in a very strict home as a child. I'm certain Sori will relate on an extremely personal level. I get emotional almost every time I listen to it.
Liked the reaction! Man that solo is so badass. If you're gonna do more Metallica reactions I recommend Fade to Black and as someone in the previous video recommended to Sori, Dyers Eve, that songs just destroys!
Fuck yes Dyers Eve !!! Or anything else off of ...And Justice For All. I think Harvester of Sorrow has the most cool/groovy guitar riffs of any Metallica song.
Been a while since I listened to this song. I forgot how much I like it. I think this was the album when Metallica “returned” to what they once were (the rest of Death Magnetic is a throw back to 80s thrash). Now, I want more Lamb of God! Vigil, Hourglass, or Walk With me Hell. I would also be psyched to see some Mudvayne!
Yaaaaayy The Unforgiven 3, my personal favorite of the Unforgiven series. Wicked guitar solo as well. And oh, I'm gonna be like that little brother that keeps annoying you guys about this, but BTBAM for sure and certain epic A7X songs (The Wicked End, MIA, and Strength of the World) would be great for you to react to. :) I'm sure you guys got it on your list, but like I said, I'm just gonna be annoying LMAO
Sori, Vin! I started watching your show because I was interested in your view of the songs I love so much and was very - very curious, but now...I just watch the show to listen to your stories. Your experiences, your thoughts about life are so very familiar and touching...I'm sitting here watching you discussing things song by song and I'm struggling with tears for you make me remember the things me and my family went/are going through. @Vin - I have the voice speaking to me too. I've never called it God, but it was guiding me through my hardest times and I've learned to stop, silence my thoughts and doubts and listen to it better.
I mean don't get me wrong I like 1, but it might be more classic nostalgia than anything else. I just really like intensity of 3 more. I guess it just resonates more with me personally.
All that talk about being lost around 16-18 minutes reminds me of an old Mitch Hedberg line: "If i ever get lost in the woods, i'll build a cabin.... I used to be lost, but now i live here", or something close to that.
I follow a lot of reaction chanels, but i felt the need to subscribe to you guys! Loving the song picks and i must say i like your vibes! Keep the reactions coming mates! Greetings from Portugal!
Someone on the comments for Unforgiven II nailed it. The first song is about the inability or unwillingness to forgive "them", the second is about "you", and this is about "me". Knowing Hetfield's past, the theme of forgiveness is clearly very personal to him. Personally I grew up on the first two, but as I've gotten older, part 3 touches me the most, and feels far deeper lyrically, and is the one I listen to the most. I'm oddly satisfied that you both liked it. Keep up the good work.
(incomming broken english, please forgive me. i hope you can understand) I'm an atheist, and i'ts really hard for me to live in my country without any religion (the vast majority of people around here are catholic or protestant), because people will judge you and brand you as a "bad" person for it. But i don't hate religious people, some of them even helped me when i was going through a really though situation in my life. I just want to say that i admire you guys for being so open minded and intelligent. You have no idea how hard is to find people like you! My society is made of mixed people froom all around the world and i was thought to love all people equally. My only faith lies with good people like you. Keep it up, sorry for the bad english and believe when i say that i love you guys! -just a random guy from Brazil.
Wow!!! Thank you so much for commenting! I’m sorry that I only have harsh religious people around you. Not everyone is like that...Jesus never was. I’m glad that you found our channel. Join us on Facebook! We are creating a community of people that are open and wanting friendships!! Thanks random guy from Brazil! -Sori🤟🏻
I have a very naive point of view. I believe in "us", you know, i believe in the great things our species could achieve if we put all of that negative stuff aside for at least one moment (xenophobia, racism, etc.), and realize that without unity there's no survival for us on this planet. Maybe one day right? xD Please review "parasite god" from Mortiis (please don't get mad xD). I would love to hear your thoughts on that song!
Metallica has enriched my life since the mid 80's. This is yet another example of what I love about them. Gives me good chills. thanks guys! I absolutely love your takes on the music!
I don't normally comment on these vids too much but I had to call out a few things. First - Hetfield IS a lyricist and a VERY good one. Second - I loved your analysis of the song and this is one of favourite songs ever. Lastly, I wish you'd go back to sections of the song you're talking about so it's clear what parts you're commenting on. PEACE OUT! :)
More Devin Townsend! Funeral, Bastard and The Death of Music from the Royal Albert Hall live are amazing even if musically pretty simple. A take on his album Deconstruction would also be very interesting, being its concept about Devin's fight and triumph against his addictions.
You want to hear Metallica's heavier side, I suggest checking out their first 4 albums (Kill 'Em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, ...And Justice for All) and their last two albums and EP (Death Magnetic, Beyond Magnetic EP and Hardwired... To Self Destruct)
Sori you are adorable! I can tell you've got rock and roll in your heart, especially at 5:18. I can see it on your face :) I could also tell in the type o negative christian woman video when the heavy guitars kicked in that you were feeling it. Keep looking girl and you'll keep finding yourself in the music!
I am with Sori on this. III = #1, then I and II. Also, love seeing your reactions and interactions with each other. You are two very interesting, smart and lucky people! Keep it metal! 🤘
Fantastic reaction and analysis. Easily my favorite song from Death Magnetic too. I can't not ask for the Karnivool reaction. They're Australian and anything from the Sound Awake album is very proggy in the same vein as Tool (not quite on Tool's level). I'll ask for "New Day" to be reacted to.
listen to creeping death bois!!!, also i would recommend flesh and the power it holds by Death Nutshell by alice in chains the wilde flowers or burden by Opeth ghost of the navigator or hallowed be thy name by Iron Maiden cemetery gates by Pantera and war pigs by Black Sabbath.
I agree with Sori; I started listening to rock/ glam metal music in my teens, and "heavier" metal (specifically Finnish metal) a few years ago. It has definitely helped me spiritually, as well. Music is one of God's greatest gifts to us, in my opinion.
This was great. Definitely my favorite of the trilogy. Really enjoying your channel so far! You two are interesting, insightful and entertaining. I have to recommend "Nobody" by SKINDRED, a metal band from Wales that incorporates elements of reggae, dancehall, electronic, and various other genres. You wouldn't think it would blend well, but you won't believe how well it does.
Love the reactions ya'll. Metallica is one of my favs. But I have a suggestion for the Underground show. Ya'll should check out Mudvayne World so Cold or Perversion of a Truth. Keep rockin
For another "suite" of songs, you should check out The Four Seasons album by Wintersun. Four tracks, each one named for and inspired by the seasons. The darker side of the seasons, of course ;) The genre is an awesome blend of black metal, folk metal, and melodic death metal.
I just got back from vacation, so I'm a little late to this party... but it looks like you trusted me on Unforgiven III and it paid off. Maybe you'll trust me again? Try Metallica - Call of Ktulu, Low Man's Lyric, Fixxxer and All Nightmare Long
Thank you guys so much for your thoughtful reactions. This is exactly what makes RUclips such a powerful platform. Thoughtful reactions that make people think. I have never really been a fan of digging into lyrics. I usually gauge my interest/fandom of a band purely on the instrumentation. I will negect ridiculous lyrics like say Cannibal Corpse or satanistic bands cause I just think they are going for the "shock" effect. I am not a religious person thou so I would do the same for Christian bands like say stryper. If I hear junk lyrics, I will completely disregard them. I do however find your religious commentary about these songs that I love very interesting. Vin, do not give up on opeth! They are one of my favorite bands and they have a lot to offer. They are not everyone's "cup of tea" but, if you give them a chance, there's a lot to uncover. Blackwater Park and Still Life are thier best albumns IMO. Songs I'd like you to react to are, in no particular order: Demon of the fall Bleak Harvest Deliverance Hope leaves Isolation years The lotus eater Burden The devil's orchard Famine Sorceress I'm also a huge fan of Gojira and am thirlled with your recent reactions to them. Please check out more from this amazing band. Reactions I'd like to see: Love Esoteric surgery Born in winter The shooting star The cell Keep up the great work. I'm a recent subscriber and will be watching. Thanks again.
The Unforgiven series was not about exestential world type stuff, it's rooted deeply within singer James Hetfield's own head and his relationships with people and family, particularly his parents. The third song is post-rehab and how he has managed to deal with those relationships now with a new perspective on life
Personally I agree with you pal, 1, 3, 2 is my list. Next up - I think that some songs off of the “...And Justice For All” would be perfect for you, such as the song’s sake, And Justice For All, then also Harvester of Sorrow, One, Dyer’s Eve, To Live is to Die, and The Frayed Ends of Sanity
Off of a different album is the Black Album, that has some other gems including the first Unforgiven.. my personal faves are Sad But True, Wherever I May Roam, Don’t Tread on Me, and The God that Failed
This song is something they would write with Cliff Burton.. has that Sanitarium type of arrangement, and reminiscent of that intro from Fight Fire with Fire.. you know, that classical vibe thingy. The Unforgiven 1 and 2 are something they would write without the Cliff influence.
Did you know that there was a cult called the new dawn or a golden dawn? It was the cult of alister crawley, who had the theme " do which thou wilt and it shall be the whole of the law " ! I think he is speaking of that cult. He found himself in that cult? Maybe?
Great review guys, in my opinion this one is far better than the second one , but is kind of lack of "lyrics sensation" that the firts one have. You could react to Anathema - Lost control, its very interesting...
Okay I had to post another comment about this review. I posted my last comment while you all were still actually talking about the Metallica song and then continued listening through the rest of the video where you all actually went off on the tangent of forgiveness. When you all make it to the point where you talked about separating institutional Christianity and God I was thrilled at the way that you are actually went about discussing that. I don't know if you all have really discussed that on other videos some of the videos that I've watched from you all I'll have to admit seems like they were getting a little long-winded and I would just go to the next video so I can see how you all were reacting about the next song. So now after hearing the rest of the conversation through this video I feel like I need to go back and watch all the others all over again. You all are amazing keep doing what you're doing.
damn.... shiver and Goosebumps all over.... Metallica is back for sure :-) Hey guy's can you do some My Dying Bride ... my all time favorite Band... it touches me over and over.
Great reaction, definitely the most sincere reactions on RUclips, my favorite musical trilogy has to be Funeral/Bastard and The Death of Music by Devin Townsend Project live at the Royal Albert Hall, you guys should check it out
Being a Metallica fan the first one is the best and is a classic Metallica sound. Hate when people think Metallica is only metal but they are great because their slow songs etc are pure gold
If you want something that is lyrically amazing, I would suggest checking out Rush playing Bravado. The lyrics are deep and thought provoking and the music is incredible.
As you are both Christian, I'd love to see you react to Mercyful Fate "The Oath" with lyrics. They are one of the very first Black Metal bands but opera style vocals from King Diamond.
Seriously guys. I am a stay at home Dad to Two children, one with Autism m. I went on a blaming spree and it ended with myself after going through everyone and God. The simple idea of God allowed me to move and become better and music is massive in this
1, 3, 2 for me too, but that may change over time. I find the 3rd Unforgiven more and more relatable as I get older. Tough to beat the first one though.
By the way, I am a die hard Metallica fan, and most of the ideas you picked out of the lyrics were done on purpose by James Hetfield. He might not be a lyricist in the traditional sense, but he is a very VERY deep dude. More of a poet I would say.
I know wat youre saying i remember wen Gilligan ilsand wen they got rescued so they went back to that island. Thats wat S&M2 he would be lost without his mom and his family
I just thought of something that I think makes it a little cooler. Metallica came out and was thrash metal, heavy and fast! Black album is where they shifted gears a bit, slowing it down and being more metal / hard rock sounding. Then Load / Re-Load gives us an alternative sound. Death Magnetic was their coming back to the Metal. So it is like we get an "Unforgiven" in each stage of their experiment away from their thrash roots. Plus each song is a different stage of self examination into forgiveness and bitterness.
I realised one of the most interesting things about this song is that the chorus is not the heaviest part, and I've been listening to them for a lot now.
Before the days of Hollywood trilogies... a metal trilogy. So good. Unforgiven made me love Metallica, Unforgiven 2 became my favorite but this one’s the strongest in terms of lyrics and the feeling it evokes.
My favorite in order is 2,1,3 none of them are weak in my opinion but for some reason I LOVE the 2nd one. In terms of music this is the best. If you want more countryallica then listen to “mama said”
Would like to see a Bullet For My Valentine reaction from you all. Hopefully from 'The Poison' or 'Scream Aim Fire' albums. By the way, the 'Death Magnetic' album, from which Unforgiven III came, is the best album they did since '....and Justice for All.' "Broken, Beaten, and Scarred" is an amazing song, you would love it.
If you do some Trivium, please do something earlier like "A Gunshot to the Head of Trepidation" (anti-family abuse). BTW, Metallica DID do a country/rock album with Lou Reed called "Lulu." It was a trainwreck.
Not a metal request, but can you do They'll Need A Crane by They Might Be Giants. After tonight that song perfectly encapsulates where I am, and it would mean a lot to me. It's a vaguely folky indie rock song.
Not quite certain ofc but i think first one is about his father, second one is about his mother and the 3rd is about himself. Him = James Hetfield, vocal and lead guitarist. Also most of the lyrics. Sometimes children feels guilty because the way how their bad/fail parents behave. They might start to think these are happening because of feelings of unworthiness followed after self-blaming like the child is really the reason. Even though he has become a metal giant it is possible that he still had the feelings while writing down these lyrics. Considering Unforgiven series sound really genuine and fucking awesome.
If you love stories with developing characters, have you watched the Dragonball Z series? The characters grow so much in that show. The main character actually grows and changes the least, imo, but only because he's got a pure heart to begin with. He learns, and is the catalyst for those around him to change and grow, even his enemies. It's pretty good stuff.
If I'm being honest, two is my favorite. It's always got to me somehow, I believe the trilogy is told backwards. 3 being the hardships of a boy growing up, 2 being the boy now a grown man his failed attempt at love, and 1 being about him as an old man now reflecting on his decisions in his life and regretting them and wishing to change it. I've always liked the Metallica like the black album and Reload, but I always find a few songs I like in each album. Sorry if I'm rambling, I just wanted to say why I love this trilogy off songs.
1st: they are unforgiven because they control my life 2nd: are you with me or are you unforgiven too? 3rd: because of my failures I can't blame you since I can't forgive myself
“Who else is there left to forgive?”
“Your self”
Nailed it.
Hetfield is indeed a lyricist!
@@Salomon_G Thinking about the songs in the context of James's life, I'd say this one can be connected to his time in rehab in 2001/2, as it's about him facing himself and dealing with his own personal issues.
Yes he is one of the best and on the lists for best lyrics..
I know right. This bloke is a jackass
Yeah, Hetfield not a lyricist? Are you mad? One of the best ever my friend...
BTW, you guys are overthinking these lyrics, this person has lost his way man and is a lot of internal pain..
I always thought part 3 was super strong.
Especially with the guitar solo
Everyone always talks about 1&2 but barely anybody gives credit to part 3, great lyrics and a badass solo.
@@ifearedfate9787 3 is better than 2 in my opinion
All of em are strong imo
3 is my favorite of them all. Death Magnetic is a killer album.
Hetfield grew up with parents who were Christian scientists and it was forced on him and his siblings leading to a lot of conflict. His dad walked out on them when James was 13. One of the best Kirk's solos ever !!
Listen to Fade to Black, and then dare to say that James is not a lyricist :) it's just a master piece, 10/10
ezequieleralt meh thats not james’ best lyrical performance tbh
Phillip Fry so tell me, which is his best one?
ezequieleralt "eye of the beholder" and " ...and justice for all"
ezequieleralt disposable heroes, which they just did
Yup and you wouldn't guess the song was inspired by their equipment being stolen while on tour
I just adore this song. It feels so personal that I almost cry everytime I hear it. Your analysis was amazing!! Much hugs to you two for doing this 😽

Well said by you both.. didn't know I needed that
Love the reactions ya'll. Metallica is one of my favs. But I have a suggestion for the Underground show. Ya'll should check out Mudvayne World so Cold or Perversion of a Truth. Keep rockin
Great video again guys! This is definitely a step up from unforgiven 2 for sure.
For another "suite" of songs, you should check out The Four Seasons album by Wintersun. Four tracks, each one named for and inspired by the seasons. The darker side of the seasons, of course ;) The genre is an awesome blend of black metal, folk metal, and melodic death metal.
I'd love to see you guys do reaction videos to Lost. It's my all time fav show, must of watched it like 5 times now lol.
Loved it again guys!!
I just got back from vacation, so I'm a little late to this party... but it looks like you trusted me on Unforgiven III and it paid off. Maybe you'll trust me again? Try Metallica - Call of Ktulu, Low Man's Lyric, Fixxxer and All Nightmare Long
Enjoying your reactions. I think you would enjoy the lyricism of Dark Tranquillity. I recommend their song "of melancholy burning".
Listed!!! -Sori✌🏻
Songs I'd like you to react to are, in no particular order:
Demon of the fall
Bleak
Harvest
Deliverance
Hope leaves
Isolation years
The lotus eater
Burden
The devil's orchard
Famine
Sorceress
I'm also a huge fan of Gojira and am thirlled with your recent reactions to them. Please check out more from this amazing band. Reactions I'd like to see:
Love
Esoteric surgery
Born in winter
The shooting star
The cell
Keep up the great work.
If you like that intro then you should try out muse’s exogenesis part 1,2 & 3, the latter in particular. Amazing songs!
This song is something they would write with Cliff Burton.. has that Sanitarium type of arrangement, and reminiscent of that intro from Fight Fire with Fire.. you know, that classical vibe thingy. The Unforgiven 1 and 2 are something they would write without the Cliff influence.
I really love your channel!! And I would love to see you react to parkway drive wishing wells. Please do this!
Sori guessed at 1:13! That was amazing!
James's vocals are so gorgeous in this song 😭😭😭😭
I think this is one of the most underrated song
Metallica never fails to astonish me with their versatility and come up with Great Songs. Never boring with Metallica!
Did you know that there was a cult called the new dawn or a golden dawn? It was the cult of alister crawley, who had the theme " do which thou wilt and it shall be the whole of the law " ! I think he is speaking of that cult. He found himself in that cult? Maybe?
Try, "God was never on your side" by Motorhead.
34:32 "word"
7:20 starting engine ^^ :-))
Great review guys, in my opinion this one is far better than the second one , but is kind of lack of "lyrics sensation" that the firts one have. You could react to Anathema - Lost control, its very interesting...
True!
agreed
Great reaction, definitely the most sincere reactions on RUclips, my favorite musical trilogy has to be Funeral/Bastard and The Death of Music by Devin Townsend Project live at the Royal Albert Hall, you guys should check it out
Connor wait till you hear creeping death. Soooo ready to watch you jaws drop when you hear / read the lyrics.
You guys should check out Love and Death or Brian 'Head' Welch's solo songs.
Specifically i recommend Chemicals or Save Me From Myself.
Hey Vin and Sori, you should totally react to Trigger by In Flames. It would be AWESOME to see you dissect those lyrics!
React to Fade to Black by Metallica. Is about The suicide.
That song is amazing it's my favorite in all the metallica songs
Ok its time to listen to Metallica "The god that failed"
Listed!
Love you guys!! From Australia. You have helped me get back into music after getting caught up in politics for too long
Seriously guys. I am a stay at home Dad to Two children, one with Autism m. I went on a blaming spree and it ended with myself after going through everyone and God. The simple idea of God allowed me to move and become better and music is massive in this
I'm with Sori, 3-1-2. "Set sail to sea, but pulled off course..." has got to be my favorite verse in any metallica song.
Insha allah 0:39 ,,, that was cool to hear
I like how all those 3 songs are so different, and yet so similar..It's nice to see that James didn't pulled off the course.(pun intended)
Before the days of Hollywood trilogies... a metal trilogy. So good. Unforgiven made me love Metallica, Unforgiven 2 became my favorite but this one’s the strongest in terms of lyrics and the feeling it evokes.
Trivium- sin and the sentence
Yes
My favorite in order is 2,1,3 none of them are weak in my opinion but for some reason I LOVE the 2nd one. In terms of music this is the best. If you want more countryallica then listen to “mama said”
If you two ever decide to try out some prog, I suggest Suppers Ready - Genesis.
This is my favorite of all 3 and I feel it has the best solo out of the 3 songs.
Not a metal request, but can you do They'll Need A Crane by They Might Be Giants. After tonight that song perfectly encapsulates where I am, and it would mean a lot to me. It's a vaguely folky indie rock song.
After tonite? What’s that mean ?
Not quite certain ofc but i think first one is about his father, second one is about his mother and the 3rd is about himself. Him = James Hetfield, vocal and lead guitarist. Also most of the lyrics. Sometimes children feels guilty because the way how their bad/fail parents behave. They might start to think these are happening because of feelings of unworthiness followed after self-blaming like the child is really the reason. Even though he has become a metal giant it is possible that he still had the feelings while writing down these lyrics. Considering Unforgiven series sound really genuine and fucking awesome.
Unfortunately not everyone understands, but it's you and only you who control your boat in this life. So good luck to you, captain!
Fixxxer from their Reload album is a great song. Try that one
Listen to dyers eve
1st: they are unforgiven because they control my life
2nd: are you with me or are you unforgiven too?
3rd: because of my failures I can't blame you since I can't forgive myself
