At 6000 ft high in elevation, Mount Laguna is a winter playground just a short easy freeway drive from San Diego. In the summer, this is a popular camping spot for hiking, mountain biking or just getting out with family and friends. Because of the easy access, the area can be crowded on the weekends especially during the peak summer season. However, on the weekdays, you'll find more room to spread your wings.
Mount Laguna Campground campsites are primitive, meaning no hookups, and they are close together. It is best suited for smaller RV and trailers. There are several loops to choose from, all of them providing easy access to the adjacent Laguna Mountain trails.
If you like Mountain Biking, this is a really good spot to make the rounds with plenty of trails to choose from. Or you can just hike the same trails at the leisurely pace to enjoy the scenery. Mount Laguna Campground is definitely worth the quick drive from the city to get away from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

I think that was after the busy summer months in September or October when the temperature was still mild.

is the bike trail you took fairly level?

Yes if you are just going around the lake. If you take some of the alternates, there are some steeper downhill/uphill sections, and some are single track too.
