yeah. Anything from the early 2000s is gonns be dated by today's standards. But Shrek is still a great movie franchise for kids and especially with it's message of just learning how to like who you are regardless of how the world will judge you
The movie's pop-culture references are very dated, and the "witty" satire of traditional fairy stories comes across as very shallow to me. Yes, Shrek can criticize our old concepts of knights, princesses, heroic quests, etc. But it never replaced them with anything of equivalent value imo.

Who's here in 2024 or 2026 when the new Shrek movie is out? By the time I'm writing this new comment, a new Shrek movie has already been confirmed by DreamWorks and Eddie Murphy and is yet to be revealed but after all this time, DreamWorks is finally going to release Shrek 5. The current landscape of animation and movies has drastically changed where everyone is just hating on everything, including kids movies. A lot of movies that I liked or enjoyed are now constantly getting dunked on like the New Super Mario Bros movie, the Sonic movie, and the FNAF movie. Everyday it's always a fandom/culture war. As for Shrek, I'm anticipating this new movie and I will say, I don't think Shrek The Third wasn't even that bad. I was seven when that movie first came out and I quite loved and enjoyed it. That hasn't changed and I'm quite a defender of that movie. It's the fourth film that I really didn't like. But looking back, I felt the reactions towards those later sequels were unwarranted. I very much believe that it was the start of movie discourse on the early years of the internet. The memes and things that came after I just interpretated as Shrek just being a defunct film franchise in a similar vain to the Harry Potter movies. But as we go further into the future, I begin to notice that a lot of film franchises and TV shows from the 2000s and other gen z (late 90s early 2000s) nostalgia are making a comeback and really nothing ever truly ends. Which I'm beginning to feel like that's not necessarily a good thing. I mean look at what happened to the Star Wars sequels. Somethings need to have a permanent ending and new ideas need to come out in the film industry. Otherwise, we are going to be slaves to this system and make money out of our consumption.
What Aggravates me about this is that if Shrek the third was at least on the same level as the first Shrek movie, it probably would’ve been up there with toy story as one of the greatest animated trilogies.

Back then, DreamWorks was Disney’s biggest rival, and was making lots and lots of money.

Michael Herrera I hope so because Shrek the Third isn't even bad. Yeah it was inferior compared to the first 2 films, but it still has its moments. Not the worst DreamWorks film, but it wasn't terrible.
@@chillplayer1234 it wasn't that the film itself was necessarily bad, it was just that Shrek had such a high reputation and for the third film to come out as mediocre a lot of people were rubbed to the wrong way, I personally think the film is passable enough but I could understand why some people would consider it a genuinely bad film.
I somehow never knew about the weird memes when they first started popping up everywhere and just watched the first two movies like no one else's business. And that turns out to have been the better option!
14:13 Please release your raw, green-sceen version of that part before you edited in the Shadow X Shrek ships. I want to see what people will edit in behind you.
I never cared about the Shrek memes for obvious reasons, but I do care about the Shrek films. The first film was decent, but not perfect. Yeah sure, it was revolutionary and made a big impact but I didn't really enjoy it since it was cliched. What I do love is Shrek 2. I just enjoy that film a lot since it took the good stuff from the first film and made even more better and enjoyable! I also love the last act, just so much fun there! As for the Shrek The Third, I don't hate it but it's definitely weaker than the first two films. Like what you said, it has its moments(Like the princesses scenes) but eh it was lackluster. It's been awhile since I've seen the 4th film and I need to fully watch Push In Boots. But yeah, Shrek has passed his prime and people need to stop making dumb memes. Also this video, Shrek 1, and Shrek The Third were all released on my Birthday so this was a nice present!
1:54 i always stop and think that. Althought i don't argue since this is the internet and i'm too busy going delirious since i'm seeing the shrek memes that exist
Shrek 4 didn't quite feel conclusive enough, because they didn't play "It is You" one last time over the credits, signifying what Shrek had wrought was every bit as over as Shrek himself. But nowadays animated films are more akin to Despicable Me or Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs.
Cabin Boi 24 “It is You” moreso signifies what the animated films before Shrek were like, which would make it a better bookend to show that everything Shrek wrought is over, not just Shrek itself.
From a critical or financial standpoint? Because there are plenty of animated films I know that could compete with Shrek, but none of them were as financially successful as Shrek.
I just got the Game Boy Advance Video version of Shrek... the movie, not a game. If I were an insane internet person, I'd say it's the only format to enjoy it in. Also, I like William Steig's original book. It's a deconstruction of the hero's journey, and proves how having an overpowered protagonist can be used for humor.
2007, I feel, was a summer of '3 disappointments.' Shrek the Third, Spider-man 3, and even the third Pirates of the Caribbean film. They all felt like bloated, multi-million dollar franchises that had drifted into lounging and going: "Yes yes yes, we are grand and awesome, just toss your gold at us, and we'll make more! MORE!! MORE!!!!"
yeah 2007 wasn't the best year for movies of that caliber, we got Transformers, that underdog movie starring Jason Lee that everyone forgot about, Alvin and the Chipmunks, the demise of Shrek, the Bee movie craze has gone down a bit, the only good movie from that year that I can think of of the top of my head or 1408, and I admittedly consider the Alvin and the Chipmunks film a guilty pleasure movie of mine but other than that and most of the movies from 2007 just weren't that great.
@@Treeeee2008 Well, there’s always independent films. If films from major studios in Hollywood disappoint then independent films and foreign language films definitely won’t because directors of independent films are given more creative freedom without studio interference or executive meddling. Independent films also make a majority of films released in a certain year, but unfortunately people would rather focus on what’s coming out of Hollywood than studios outside of Hollywood.
The meme is so exteme that Shrek is even one if not the most requested character for Super Smash Brothers. Come on we all know that people request Shrek as a joke nobody actually wants him in, people just do it for the meme and to troll Sakuray.
Anyone else notice how the character setup of the Shrek movies is similar to that of Ice Age? Shrek: Manny Fiona: Ellie Donkey: Sid Puss in Boots: Diego (both started on the villain side but then changed sides and joined the main groups, and they are even both cats).
It was always _Shrek_ and _SpongeBob_ dominating animation. And then they both started dominating MEMES.

I wish Treasure Planet would get as much praise in the internet...
Nellie Rhodes the dearest Princess of Prince Mell i know right
Kieran Stark Thanks man. Let's give the movie the light of day it deserves.
Well, there is a lot of fanart of Captain Amelia.
Animation Lookback: yes
Meme Lookback: Y E S
I somehow never knew about the weird memes when they first started popping up everywhere and just watched the first two movies like no one else's business. And that turns out to have been the better option!
5:22 Disney lost to DreamWorks so that Michael Eisner can make John Lasseter play with his toys.
You said the proper title of the first Harry Potter book!
14:13 Please release your raw, green-sceen version of that part before you edited in the Shadow X Shrek ships. I want to see what people will edit in behind you.
I like the shrek memes and movies (expect for the 3rd one). I just find it sad that there's not many people who like the shrek movies as much as I do.
He truly became the sharpest tool in the shed
Fuck you, Shrek is life
I prefer the First, but more for nostalgia as the first film I remember have seen

Wow, this comment is perfect.
Shrek is such a good animated franchise
1:54 i always stop and think that. Althought i don't argue since this is the internet and i'm too busy going delirious since i'm seeing the shrek memes that exist
That's one weird yet interesting piece of history
Just *Shrektacular* You really *Ogre* did it this time!
Just NEUTRONTACULAR YOU REALLY NEUTRONED YOUR SELF
I got Shrek on VHS when I was 8 years old.
Cabin Boi 24
“It is You” moreso signifies what the animated films before Shrek were like, which would make it a better bookend to show that everything Shrek wrought is over, not just Shrek itself.
I don't think any other animated movie will ever be like shrek
From a critical or financial standpoint? Because there are plenty of animated films I know that could compete with Shrek, but none of them were as financially successful as Shrek.
I just got the Game Boy Advance Video version of Shrek... the movie, not a game. If I were an insane internet person, I'd say it's the only format to enjoy it in.
Also, I like William Steig's original book. It's a deconstruction of the hero's journey, and proves how having an overpowered protagonist can be used for humor.
2007, I feel, was a summer of '3 disappointments.'
Shrek the Third, Spider-man 3, and even the third Pirates of the Caribbean film.
They all felt like bloated, multi-million dollar franchises that had drifted into lounging and going: "Yes yes yes, we are grand and awesome, just toss your gold at us, and we'll make more! MORE!! MORE!!!!"
The three third Pirates films were good. Fourth was decent, but the Fifth is a pile of shit
yeah 2007 wasn't the best year for movies of that caliber, we got Transformers, that underdog movie starring Jason Lee that everyone forgot about, Alvin and the Chipmunks, the demise of Shrek, the Bee movie craze has gone down a bit, the only good movie from that year that I can think of of the top of my head or 1408, and I admittedly consider the Alvin and the Chipmunks film a guilty pleasure movie of mine but other than that and most of the movies from 2007 just weren't that great.
Hello shrek 5
Katzenberg sure is petty.
Review the 3 Shrek movies that you haven’t reviewed
HA! "Shrek the Third" actually IS the murder of Shrek himself!!! LOL
AniMat have you seen Cartoon All-Stars before?
Shrek 5 It's never ogre
Anyone else notice how the character setup of the Shrek movies is similar to that of Ice Age?
Shrek: Manny
Fiona: Ellie
Donkey: Sid
Puss in Boots: Diego (both started on the villain side but then changed sides and joined the main groups, and they are even both cats).
Also Rio. Which is from the same studio is like Madagascar.
And maybe spies in disguise is like monsters vs aliens.
