I bought the base X in red for 2 reasons mainly…..$7500 tax break and I was able to transfer FREE SUPERCHARGING from my 2016 P100D to the new Model X. That was a game changer for me. I have a Performance Model 3 already and the Model Y is just too similar, hence the X was the way to go for me.
I have 2023 MX and husband has 2022 MY. Great comparison. I am loving mine as a beast of a roadtripper. You are exactly right - the extra range and the charging curve is now making road trips in the X as fast as driving ICE. Especially with 250kw stations everywhere. 😊
Really makes the S/X a much better value and much closer to how much I felt they were worth. I know people were buying them and the market sets the price, but for me they were overpriced for what you got. It was just silly from a financial perspective even considering one when they were double and half a Y for how little you got over the Y. At this price they're very much compelling if you got the cash and are in the market.
Very good review comparing the Y, which I have driven. The 2024 X I just bought does have the horn in the middle of the steering wheel THANK YOU TESLA!
It’s kinda weird to say this about a $78k car, but it’s a bit of a value now for all you get over the MY. Both are great, but the X does feel more refined and luxurious.
Dave - when I see you take that beautiful drive (last part of the video), you really make me want to buy a Model X. Great video. Thanks for sharing with us.
Loved this vid like all of them lol. Missed Kathy lol. The only thing you could do to improve the videos is have the volume a little louder bc the ads RUclips run are quite a bit louder. Other than that, perfection. I watched and listened to the whole hour while I worked today 😊
21" wheels are not only more subject to damage but also degrade ride quality. 19" is the sweet spot when it comes to wheels. Shame manufacturers think bigger is better.
18" wheels are the real sweet spot. More sidewall beef, more wheel protection and more range. I can't stand that Tesla insists on bigger wheels with rubber band sidewalls, and rubber that doesn't still out farther than the rims to protect against curb rash.
On this press Model X, The right rear wheel on the Model X has what appears to be curb rash. Also, the falcon wing doors do not open if you are parked in a tight spot. Finally, Dave you will hate the turn signals on the steering wheel and the horn will be hard to find in an emergency.
What's a "press Model X"? The falcon wing doors do open in tight spots, they have sensors and can adjust their angle. And while yes the horn is in a stupid location it can be used easily in an emergency by putting your whole hand over that button, not just your finger.
Also agree about lack of interior noise - my 2020 MX was creaky - the 2023 rides smoother and much quieter - inside and outside noise is significantly improved
I just did an overnight test drive of a 2024 Model X and it had a lot of creaking from the interior. I was a bit disappointed by the creakiness but loved the car overall.
Great video with a well focused topic. One add on your point with a 7 seater Model X is unless you are trading in, that 7 seater option could cost you $11,000 if you lose that tax credit.
Another Great Video, Thanks Dave! I recently acquired a 23 MYLR - charging cost $38 (292kWh) for first month - (which was equal to about 4.6 tanks of my previous ICE Vehicle) saving $111/mo in gas! Wife loves the Y as do I!
Full "Tank" on MYLR (75kw) - 75kw x $0.14 = $10.50 full charge cost at home - 292kwh / 75kw (Full Charge "Tank") = 3.893 "Fill ups" - if I was to fill up my previous ICE Vehicle cost $45 (less range about 200 miles per tank) - $45 x 4 fill ups = $180 - so in reality it was $142 savings a month in GAS - hope this helps@@AmyAmy-ev3yuIf you charge at a supercharger or CCS prices range from $0.25-$0.48kw - still cheaper than gas but best to charge at home whenever possible!
@@AmyAmy-ev3yuI guess he means he was using 4.6 tanks, $38+111=$149. Assuming electricity is cheap, Probably driving around 1k miles per month. On a Prius/Rav4 Hybrid, it will be more like $80 to 100 range. Extra tire/insurance/registration costs etc can quickly eat into those savings
While I do like the luxurious features of the X compared to the Y there seems to be more aftermarket item support for the Y such as air suspension, powered sunshade, driver led display with carplay and android auto, rear passenger display etc. Would love to see this comparison in the future when Tesla releases the Project Juniper refreshed Model Y. Oh and one more important thing is I can add a roof rack to the Y unlike the X.
Just remember that every aftermarket item you put on the Y to make it more like the X, if it causes an issue with the cars systems, then Tesla won't cover the repair of the Tesla system. Plus, you could end up spending more money to get those items installed, not to mention the time it takes a shop to install them.
I have an X90D and 23 YP. The Y drives like a sports car. It's very fast. Suspension firm but comfortable. X is bigger, another ride with air suspension and ventilated seats. X use good for business that can use section 179 deduction. Y feels right sized if you're driving by yourself most the time. For premium features, X for sure.
Nicely done as usual. I love my 2023 model s long range in the ultra red color. I sold my 2021 MYP to buy this and the built quality has improved nicely. Enjoy your X when you get it.
Maybe do a video on min / max charging your car depending on if you are using your car locally every day, leaving your car parked for a week or two to minimise battery degradation.
BTW(OT) - for the Model Y pictured ...the center console tray actually slides forward to become a hide-a-way tray while keeping full access to the deep full center console ( I tend to keep a full band hidden and at the ready....hey you never know these days,,,,)
2021+ Model X and S have active noise cancelation technology the Y doesn't have. Road in my daughter's new X a few weeks ago and it was quieter than my MYP.
I like the Model X, but wish Tesla would offer a version without the gullwing doors so I can install a roof rack! For now I am waiting for the refreshed Model Y (Project Juniper) and hopefully a rumored plaid version🙂 Great video though Dave!
The ventilated seats are my favorite "feature" of the X, along with an amazing ride, and the super fast charging that makes road trips a pleasure. I test drove the Y, which is really great for the money, but the X is in a different class, and I had the cash thanks to the tax incentives along with TSLA's 10X stock price since I bought in 2019. In 2022 the X cost $55 K more than today.
@@richardalexander5758 the X is in a different class. I’m seriously having withdrawals after the test drive. And that panoramic roof line is like none other. I’d get it just for that, everything else is a bonus 🤣.

Hi Dave.. since you've owned a Model X before, what is your recommendation on which/what year to purchase if thinking used? We're looking at a new Model Y vs a used Model X - Thanks.
Personally I would never buy a used EV, because you really don't know how the previous owner charged the car. Poor charging habits could have rapidly declined the battery health.
What a great comparison video Dave! I look forward to meeting you on Saturday. Sounds like its going to be a great event. Hopefully the Brewery is ready for an EV takeover lol 😆 😅
Another great video. I’ve yet to get a Tesla. I do love their designs and innovation and would love to own one. The only thing holding me back is their lack of a gasoline powered engine. I would even consider a Tesla hybrid if they made one. I just hope that one day they do present a gas powered option.
Cars are not investments. Rarely does anyone make out when selling or trading in a used vehicle. Just get what you want, life is short. But obviously don't over extend yourself financially.
I would try to get a 2020 X that was delivered in December 2019 to its original owner. Because then I would get the unlimited miles eight-year battery and powertrain warranty. But my question is in my garage. I have the garage door screen that goes down which hangs below my garage door, and I’m wondering if I would be able to even open the falcon wing doors in the garage at the lower ceiling height?q
It is going to be state dependent. Some places there will not be much difference, other places will cost you an arm and a leg, not to mention your first born. You really cannot generalize here.
@@Mike-jq9jo It's also City dependent, larger populated areas mean more cars on the road which mean more chances of accidents. Plus, a more expensive car will have higher insurance premiums because the repairs and parts are more expensive.
Dave, do you and Kyle recommend getting a lightly used model X at all? I was thinking of the newer ones from 2022 to present. What are your thoughts and Kyle’s on that?
The Model X is an amazing-looking vehicle and the Falcon Wing doors, are the icing on the cake. I would prefer the 3 over the Y, but they are all great cars. Hope you have your X soon. Great video, keep it up.
Dave, How does the X front legroom compare to the GV60. I’m 6’6 and thought the front driver legroom was much better than the Y in the Genesis. however I didn’t consider the X cause the price was so high. I bought the gv60 for me but my wife will need a family hauler. Great channel and love your sons channel as well.
Also, the interior dimensions for storage of skis or whatever are minimal.Rather have a Y dual motor.Towing Package With Roof Racks.Range Loss Is Minimal,Even with Roof and Trailer.Real time tested.
If my recollection is correct, it all began with Kyle and some other young motoring enthusiasts showing off how their cars (mostly gas powered) could drive fast around tracks -- including some driving and/or modifications that were outside the range specified by the manufacturers. Then Kyle and his friends discovered that stock EVs could do some things that very few ICE cars can do even with mods, and the channel gradually became EV focused. Then EV sales and EV interest blew up worldwide, and so did OOS. Kyle's enthusiasm, and his nerdy knack for numbers filled a niche very nicely.
Always enjoy your videos. The Model X always has intrigued me and has potential to be a great family car… Except for the Musk touches here and there: 1). The dash has an awkward layout, losing the Danish ambience of the Models Y and 3. I don’t like asymmetrical displays that add to the distractions a driver faces while driving. With the Yoke steering wheel and the horn placement and omission of the most basic controls … could grandmother or a visiting cousin borrow the car and drive it? 2). Then there are the gull wing doors in the rear - why add a source of very expensive hardware that certainly will fail in 5 to 10 years… I have lived in very rainy climates where a slight breeze will drench through the gaping openings a poor mother loading a baby in a child seat… and 3). that glass, all that Jetson mobile glass so vulnerable to rock chips. As a party pooper I would like to remind you out there that a car, no matter what the spaceship technology, is a tool to get us from point A to point B. When advanced technology prone to failures and excessive nannying by a computer gets in the way of a pure driving experience the driving tool becomes dated and irrelevant soon.
I don't keep cars long enough, yea we noticed that lol.. good vid though. was wondering about the Y compared to the X and S, or would another EV be better. Question on the tax credit If you get a Tesla with the tax credit and then trade it in for another tesla x months later in the same calendar year with another that qualify for the tax credit, can you claim both tax credits? or are you only able to claim it once for just one of them?
thanks OSD! I currently own a spicy Model Y and am considering the model X in the Ultra Red! I think you did a great job of explaining the differences between the 2 cars. I am looking for a car that offers more luxury and at $79k, the X has hit my radar. I wonder how long Elon will be able to keep the price below the $80k. thanks again for the review
@@dconner9 Okay, thanks. You placed yours a few days before me with estimated delivery dates about a week ahead of me. It will be interesting to see how their deliveries match their estimates. Not sure but for many people it’s not the most important but it’s great to have it is if you can get it. And for some people (me) it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity, to buy a fast car. (I owned a Tesla M3 LR which is fast enough according to me. When I later switched to the MY I could/would settle with the MY Rwd LFP knowing I already have had a pretty fast car before.
Hard to believe someone who can afford an $80-$90K vehicle can qualify for a federal tax credit with an income limit of $300K for couples and $150K for single tax filers. Although if you own your own business and/or have a lot of deductions, maybe...
The non-automatic fronk is a major fail on this class of vehicle. And one more thing, eliminate the falcon doors and lower the price by $10K. I would buy it then. Come on Elon, fix this ASAP.
Why does Tesla insist on putting those heavy 21" wheels on the Model Y Performance?! You may not need the faster Model X, but then again you really don't need a to buy a Tesla. It's not about what we need, it's about what we want. :) You'd think by now that the Model S and X would have an auto Frunk, considering how expensive they are. So the new Model X's still have the red/orange UV roof glass? And thought Tesla put the horn back in the center airbag now? And if only Tesla would come up with a small spare tire for all their cars, as an option. Which would be great for road trips in areas with spotty cell coverage.
Is anyone considering the effect on current owners and the resale value of their vehicles? A lot of people who buy cars to keep them for the longer term, 3-5 years, must be suffering financially. The financial games that Tesla play seems to screw current owners.
People need to stop worrying about resale value. I've never bought a car to sell it, I bought it at a price I was willing to pay and just enjoy it. Cars are not investments!
Gosh, I keep watching this video and I keep thinking the whole vehicle was designed by a 12 year old. There is SO much wrong with it, safety and convenience wise. But, having said that, there is a lot that is perfect with it. Hey Tesla, I’m work in aerospace and I am available for consult on how you FIX your vehicles.

Not from Tesla or Fremont. Everything is always within specs….#_If_you_known_you_know
When you had panel gaps and showed it to Tesla, they would say “it’s within spec” as a way to dismiss your criticism.
New game- take a shot every time Dave mentions he’s a big guy 😂❤
The same 30.000 difference is between x3 and x5, and the x5 is smaller than model x while x3 is similar in size to model y
How about the Model X driver's seat comfort for a big guy, after 2 years my Y seats are starting to annoy me :)
These button gizmos are ridiculous and less safe. A stalk for D,R, & P. A stalk for turn signals. And the horn in the middle.
I am so very disappointed that they canceled the model X in Australia.
They cancelled the right had drive model for everywhere I believe.
There is only one reason - nobody wanted to buy it. It is not a 100k+ car. It is maybe a 70k? car. Its not selling.
The Model X would have been a consideration for me if it had been available in RHD (in the UK).
With your estimated delivery dates in late November to early December, do you mind sharing when you placed your order?
Sept 14
@@dconner9 Okay, thanks. You placed yours a few days before me with estimated delivery dates about a week ahead of me. It will be interesting to see how their deliveries match their estimates. I've got the same configuration as you. I suspect we'll see a lot of Ultra Red 5-seaters delivered in the next 2 months.
I wish someone would explain the need for such speed for any Ev.
Someone make an awesome intro for Dave :)
26:13 I am laughing, Sir!
I wonder how tall Dave is?
Did this Model X have cream interior or was it white?
Cream
I hear the X is louder inside from road noise.
Hard to believe someone who can afford an $80-$90K vehicle can qualify for a federal tax credit with an income limit of $300K for couples and $150K for single tax filers. Although if you own your own business and/or have a lot of deductions, maybe...
My Dad can but I cant😢😢😢
He buys new expensive vehicles all the time, no way he qualifies for the tax credit.
Why is it hard to believe?
The non-automatic fronk is a major fail on this class of vehicle. And one more thing, eliminate the falcon doors and lower the price by $10K. I would buy it then. Come on Elon, fix this ASAP.
Thank you Dave this will be an interesting comparison 👍👍👍
Why does Tesla insist on putting those heavy 21" wheels on the Model Y Performance?! You may not need the faster Model X, but then again you really don't need a to buy a Tesla. It's not about what we need, it's about what we want. :)
You'd think by now that the Model S and X would have an auto Frunk, considering how expensive they are. So the new Model X's still have the red/orange UV roof glass? And thought Tesla put the horn back in the center airbag now?
And if only Tesla would come up with a small spare tire for all their cars, as an option. Which would be great for road trips in areas with spotty cell coverage.
I tried the back seat of the model X those will be some small adults lol I could not fit and neither can my son in that third row . 😂
My wife can't tell the difference (outside) between the two. I told her to get the cheaper one!!!
You got that right. Even from the sides and rear, its hard to tell the difference. The door handles are the BIG tell.
I honestly have a hard time telling the difference between the X and Y. Some people think they are one and the same, just different colors.

How concerned are you with the negative camber on the rear wheels and the possibility of going through tires quickly?
Most reviewers on RUclips don't mention an issue with negative camber.
And every Tesla goes through tires quickly.
No better time than now to get an X
If you can afford the higher tax, DMV fee and insurance rate, then yes. Not everyone can.
Back in 2016 I looked at the X and the insurance was 5 times that of a Lincoln MKX. Bought the MKX because of that. Wonder if the insurance rage is still that dramatic, anyone know???@@Resist4
Get a preowned low mileage 2022 and saved a ton of money. Thats what I did I got a model S long range with 21”s and previous owner got the 12k beta full auto pilot which I thought was crazy. Only had 5k miles. Also you wanna be careful and look in the door for the manufacture date my best friend has someone that can look up your vin # because of quality issues.
And not know how the previous owners charging habits, could have set your battery up for early failure.
How about a SWFL meet-up? I'm near you in (Marco) I'm in Estero.. Exit 123…
I'm going to send you an email.
Really love your videos Dave. I just don't have an hour to watch this one. Keep your videos to around 10 minutes and you will do much better here on YT.
I have the 2021 performance Y and because of the price slash plus tax credit, the model X long range is actually cheaper. So I ordered one. I don’t think it will ever be lower than it is now.
Not sure how you are figuring that the Model X Long Range is cheaper than the Model Y Performance, because that's not true.
@@Resist4if you buy the model x (base) today and if you include the tax credit, it will be cheaper than when I bought my performance Y with FSD 2 years ago.
@@chupscola9198 comparing a price from today to something 2 years ago is idiotic. It doesn't make it cheaper than another model today.
I’m just saying, that is my own experience. That’s why I mentioned the year 2021 in my original post. I was never told that telling experiences is idiotic. Sorry my bad. Anyway, ordered my new X coz I felt it was cheaper and bigger than the car I bought 2 years ago.
@@chupscola9198 "coz"? lol
Both too long in the tooth. Especially that X.
Pity the X does not feel like a $80k vehicle to me. The falcon wing doors and minivan (dated) looks are a turn off for me. Dave, this is what you get if you must have Tesla supercharging!
Looks nothing like a minivan to me.
there is nothing 'SUV' about these :)
kkeeee
Your videos are interesting but often too long. At 30 minutes you gave a summary and then you talk for 20 more minutes
to offer another perspective of feedback: i enjoy the long format videos
I often watch them at 1.25x or 1.5x speed, so they are not that long anymore. :)
@@dconner9I find the reviews nice and relaxing to watch. Some things are sometimes repeated, but that is not a problem. The x is a bit big for the Netherlands. I have the 2023 m3 rdw and I really like it.
I enjoy listening to longer videos while at work.
I couldn’t care less about the windshield and its view. This is where Tesla fails on all of its vehicles. I want a metal roof, NO panoramic roof because the heat emanating from it sucks!
Btw, I have a 2023 Model Y for reference.
I would “cross-shop” the Model X if it was coming in at around $65k with the improvements I mentioned, rather than where it is right now.
I kind of agree, I'd rather have a metal roof, only because the glass roof does get chipped which happened to my Model 3.
I still wouldn't buy both
