In Martian Manhunter's first appearance in 1955’s Detective Comics #225 drawn by Joe Certa, he had the large brow.

I distinctly remember Mignola was doing monthly work prior to this over at Marvel for Incredible Hulk and then Alpha Flight for a handful of issues (which was disappointing, because I honestly loved his take on Alpha Flight after Byrne). On the Doctor Fate front, I also remember a couple of miniseries preceded Cosmic Odyssey, from both Giffen and Simonson...so for me it visually made sense to see Mike's take on him. At the time, I felt that this prestige miniseries was a "must buy" since you had Starlin the legend working with a hot young turk like Mignola relatively soon after the 'Post Crisis' reboot era, which actually made the DCU more interesting and reader friendly as far as I was concerned. After having read the Grand Design books that you guys and Tom Scioli did, I'd totally be down for a DC KAYFABE Imprint!!! Thanks, Gents!!

Mignola said this run, and his prep for it, was what finally unlocked what he wanted to do visually: he studied so much Kirby to prep and had Kirby pieces all over his desk while working on these, and that finally encouraged him to push exaggeration instead of trying to hew away from it.

Mignola did have a team book -he worked on X factor for a brief run of issues.
Bruce Timm obviously thought the same as you guys, if you just swap out StarFire for wonder woman the cosmic odyssey series is the inspiration for his 2001 justice league cartoon. Bruce Timm gets a lot of shape language from Mignola. He found great stylistic shorthands for Kirby.

05:25 Lol, this is the Phantom's MO as well. Trenchcoat and hat on top of the blue pajamas, and sunglasses to hide the eye-mask.

I never thought about Steve Olliff as a possible shoot interview until Ed mentioned it. He would be an AMAZING get. I would love to see that.

Another DC "saga", "crossover", "event" or however you wanna call it from '88 you might be interested in checking out is "Invasion!". It's not that it's any good, but it's got Todd McFarlane, Keith Giffern and Bart "The Brute" Sears on pencils, with a whole army of inkers on top of them. That might give place to some interesting insights from you.

The heroes in the Whitehouse, sans Batman, are "cosmic" themed. Martian Man Hunter, Starfire, and Superman are all aliens, while Green Lantern belongs to an intergalactic police force. Starlin probably considered them the alien invasion specialists. Batman just happened to be an eyewitness.

Don’t think Mike Mignola had much interest in DC characters
