Greatswords aren't Slow and Cumbersome

  • Recently, quite a few people have been asking me whether you can actually wield a steel greatsword with any significant sort of speed and change the direction of your attacks easily. So I figured it would be cool to do a short video to showcase some different greatswords I have trained with over the years and compare their weight and the speed at which I can swing them.
    All of these swords fall roughly within the 2-4kg spectrum of historical examples that were intended for actual battlefield us. In order:
    - GoNow foam greatsword, 2kg
    - Blackfencer nylon montante, 2kg
    - Ancient Forge custom bidenhander, 2kg
    - Regenyei Spadone, 2,3kg
    - Kvetun greatsword, 2,8kg
    - Fire sword by Rab McMeikan

A few greatswordsmen could advance into a pike formation while swinging in a predetermined pattern like we see in this video to knock pikes to the side and break up the formation, alternatively bait them into abandoning their position. Then the regular soldiers could engage them more effectively. But it was a extremely dangerous job usually undertaken by forlorn hopes, wich were bands of soldiers expected to carry out suicide missions. Usually convicts, people who drew lots or just madmen that reckoned they could survive and recieve the extra pay.

      If you mean souls games, Greatswords have a pretty correct attacking pace in that series. The movements seen in the video are for defending an area, usually a bridge or a boat or a street corner, for a limited time period. Against what could potentially be many enemies. It will exhaust even a highly trained person very quickly. One person is putting in tons of effort to keep the opponents at bay while they can just stand there out of reach.
      So yeah, You're much better off swinging a greatsword like you're in elden ring, with elden ring speed, than doing this, if you were actually in elden ring situations
      You might be thinking of ultra greatswords, which are much, much bigger than this. And therefore have much higher impact forces than this, and higher recovery after each swing. Love it and I agree with everything you said, however, some historical context into the diets and exercise routines of the medieval and modern soldier might interest you. Medieval soldiers (especially the professional, non-conscripts) would look like fucking twigs next to modern soldiers. Their diets were trash, made up mostly of grain or whatever pitiable plant was produced in their region, providing only enough protein to maintain a stringy, sinewy physique. These men would spend nearly all their time training focused on technique, tactics, and formations with little time spent dedicated to increasing total force production. The modern soldier, conversely (using the USA as a model), is juicing with test, HGH, and whatever other chemical they can get their hands on, eating 200g of protein per day, and focusing far more on absolute strength when training due to the relative loads light infantry need to carry. Even medieval chain and plate mail would have been like a bag of feathers compared to the 80+ pound rucks that most light infantrymen carry around today. Add onto that the fact that they aren't losing muscle marching 10 hours a day between battles, and you arrive at two VASTLY different physiques. That's all. Ted Talk over 😊

    • @wilcoxway
      @wilcoxway 3 месяца назад

      @@ZeusEBoy It’s not quite correct to say that English Greatsword were made to bludgeon instead of cut. They were still made to be sharp, since a sharp edge focuses the kinetic energy into a much thinner point of impact, making it deadlier.
      But since plate armor is a thing, Greatsword fighting was usually done by thrusting the swords at one another, aiming for disarms or knockdowns, then clubbing the opponent over the head with the crossguard. This move was called a murder strike. Blunt trauma to the head to bypass armor by holding the sword by the blade and using it like a hammer.

    I think part of the issue is that they feel like they keep having to go bigger and bigger. Otherwise they’re worried there wont be enough hype, especially after endgame hype. But movies like Ant Man Quantumania just don’t work because Ant Man isn’t a main character. What they fail to realise is that starting straight off the bat with huge stakes and big changes isn’t engaging. The reason phase 1 worked is because characters were built from the ground up, with smaller-scale plots that weren’t all about the universe ending and time being deleted or whatever. Then these characters interweave and interact, and gradually the stakes get higher with the introduction of Thanos pretty early on compared to when he really gets involved. What they’ve tried to do is continue moving upwards without setting the grounds for the new characters, which ends up in the audience simply not having any reason to care about them. It’s probably part of the reason that GotG3 was actually decent.

    Its all about directing the weight and length into the next movement. Even with heavier blades you can move the weight into a follow-up swing. Let the blade flow with your attacks instead of fighting against it. You and the blade work together in tandem to compliment each others movements.
