I think I was about 17 when my mom got a free cd from a radio station give away at our state fair. It was lost dogs and mixed blessings. She gave it to me because she didn't have a cd player. I had no clue that cd would change my love and understanding of music forever. Thanks John.
John Prine's music has been apart of my life as long as I can remember 40+ years. He has gotten me through the best and worst times and I listen to him daily. RIP John Prine you are truly one of the greats. Thank you for your music that will live forever and ever.
We think of John every time we ride through the hills of Muhlenberg County, where Paradise lay. There will never be another John Prine, great songwriter/storyteller
I just accidentally stumbled upon his music about 3 days ago and I never heard of him before, and immediately fell in love with his sound, only to find out today about his passing from COVID-19. RIP Mr. John Prine. =(
I saw one of his albums just randomly. And it reminded me of an old Simon a Garfunkel album cover. Fair and Square. I got into that album big time and I can't believe i didn't discover hime till my late 30s.
I first heard of John Prine in 1973 while in the Navy. Went to a bluegrass festival near Winchester, Va, in 1974, where even the Flying Burrito Brothers were there, among other big names of bluegrass/country/folk music. Over the next 5 years, I saw him many times at bluegrass festivals all over Va, Pa, and WVa. I saw him so often, when he passed, it felt like a relative had gone on. So so sad. Can't pick a favorite, because it would be a list of over 100 songs. So humble, my favorite songwriter for sure. He can put the words together like nobody else i've ever heard, and i'm a huge fan of Dylan and Kristofferson. Anyway, I sure do miss knowing he is on the planet somewhere, making folks smile. sorry for the length of this, but i truly loved his spirit, songs, and writing. farewell my friend.
Fabulous musician. Great storyteller. I've been a fan for over 50 years.Saw him in 1988 in Phoenix. Theater in the round. With Bonnie Raitt opening. Fond memories and feel privileged to have seen him live. His music will outlive us all.
I never knew who John Prine was until I heard of his passing. I consider myself very knowledgeable when it comes to music. I have been exploring John's music for the last 4 weeks and I can say that he, without a doubt, has become my most favorite song writer of all time. Such simple song structure with such a powerful message. I'm sad I never got to see you perform John. I hope you are having your vodka and ginger ale next to peaceful waters.
I'm sorry you didn't know of him until his passing. I saw him in concert about 7 times or so. One time, Todd Snider opened for him. Check him out if you haven't already. Pretty sure Prine discovered him. He's a lot like him. you'll be glad you did.
You know, I was kinda the same; when I heard he had Covid 19 I googled him. So glad I did. I had my whole family praying for him. I was 💔. His words speak + his voice celebrates life.
@@markmoore918 I think it was jimmy buffett's buddy Keith Sykes ( who John hung out with) who got Todd started.. opened for Buffett in the 90s and had him on his 'mailboat' label for awhile
I always considered country music only music worth listening to and loved Dave and Allen coe Willie Nelson Johnny Cash all the great but never heard of John prine until his passing it's so sad you can't learn nothing till the internet came out
I was so lucky. I John Prine at the Algonquin Pub in Ottawa ON Canada in 1978. The pub was a small venue. And what a show. I saw him about 6 times after that in bigger venues in Ottawa and Toronto. He never disappointed. He mixed his songs with stories of his song writing and observances of the human condition. I was listening to John Prines When I Get To Heaven when the alert came that he really had gone to heaven. God bless John Prine and thank you for the great "Souvenirs"
God probsbly had a throne waiting for you! You gave so many exceptional joy, heartbending thoughts and feelings, always an inspiration to even the best songwriters. You will always stand alone in the gifts you gave. May you have joy forever in heaven and may He bless and keep your family. I love you, we all live you John. You will still be with us forever. Thank you always, Roxanne Evelyn
I was first introduced to John Prine’s music at Willie Nelson’s first “4th of July Picnic”, in Dripping Springs, Texas, 1973. I was 6 years out of high school. I’ll never forget that event. Sad times now.
Wow, that was the first one ever. Very special. you should recoed yourself telling about the experince. So little remainbs of the history of that event.
He had a way with words. The first John Prine song I heard was "Spanish Pipedream" and when I heard "I knew that topless lady had something up her sleeve" that this was a songwriter I needed to pay attention to!. I almost never missed him when he appeared in the DC area. "Souvenirs" will always be my favorite song -- especially when he did it with Steve Goodman.
It would be hard to pick only one John Prine favorite But most definitely souvenirs would be in my top five. God he was a beautiful soul who will be deeply deeply missed!
I have been looking for "Singing in the Shower" forever! Please, I know there has to be a copy out there! I loved John's genius, and his humor. He was one of my favorites at Telluride Bluegrass. RIP John...
I lost count of how many times I've seen John Prine live. A few years ago, John and the Everly Brothers did a benefit every year at Central City, Kentucky at an elementary school ball field. I grew up and lived in the small town of Rochester Kentucky. A town made famous by John in one of his first hits, Paradise. A small piece of ground across the river from the dam is where we gathered to find our "Illegal Smile." That small peice of ground is now the John Prine Memorial Park. Ironically the first person to introduce me to John Prine's music, a best friend since 1977, is being laid to rest in a couple of hours. RIP LTM, you will be missed!
Although I knew the name, I didn’t know much about John Prine until his illness and his passing. I’m learning him now, exploring his music. I am awed by his talent, his insight and his wit. Rest easy, John, and thanks for the matchless body of work.
Thank you John Prine : you beautiful soul! I was hoping to see you in concert now that won't happen, your records will have to do. I had been optimistic about your recovery, but I knew you had an uphill struggle. Now you are smoking that 9 mile cigarette and we don't have you. I am not the religious kind but if there is another world I hope to be in it with you. Meet you at Lake Marie. So long for now.
John prine is one of my favorite artists and will isolated out at my farm i have listed to him every morning will cutting wood. He is helping me get through even if he did not. He will live on through his music. 🤠
During my divorce, I walked around like I was half-dead, hopeless and numb for weeks, “Far From Me” came up randomly one day on the I tunes and the dam broke. Feel like that song saved my life, or at least got me going again.

His death hit me like a ton of bricks, was hoping to see him one more time. I went to see him a few years back with 2 good friends, we all three are big fans for many years, the first time I heard his music was my 21st birthday party, I'm now going to be 57 in July. I will treasure the show we saw together in my memory till the day comes when all 4 of us are together again. rest i peace my friends. Till we meet again!
I was beyond blessed to have gotten to see him in concert three times, and actually get to talk with him after two of those concerts. He gave great hugs, and even though I know he was probably exhausted after performing, he never made me feel like he didn't have the time to talk with me. I never cared to see anyone else in concert besides him. RIP you amazing human being.
Well the rains came tumbling down...held my breath and stood my ground....and watched that ship go sailing out to sea....bye John thanks for everything
I’ll remember John from seeing him in 1989 in Columbia, SC. for the first of 4 times throughout my life, with my friend Clay Ragsdale. Just John and a guitar.I’ll remember seeing him with my wife and Dad 10 years later. I’ll also remember just my wife and I seeing him when he had Amos Lee open for him. Then for the 4th time I saw him, my 2 children and my wife were with me. Great to share those times with my friend, Dad, Wife, and Children…but especially John…
Wow, what a musician filled beautiful place it has become on the other side as of late. What a concert it will be when I finally arrive. I would hate to be the local roadie. I will miss the wonderful lyrics.
Thanks for this info clip on a great Nashvillian for some 40 yrs. "When I get to heaven", "Far from me", and the comic duet with Iris Dement -" In spite of ourselves" have all got to be among his best. Paradise of course another!
My husband and I saw Prine a few years ago at SMU in Dallas. He was his usual funny self. My husband loved his songs. Dear Abby, Whistle and Go Fishin, Please Don’t Bury Me and That’s the Way the World Goes Round were some of his favorites. Prine told a funny story about That’s the Way the World Goes Round. Seems there was a woman in his audience once who asked for the “Half an Enchilada” song. John said which song? She said you know “it’s a half an enchilada you think you’re gonna down”. The actual line is “it’s a half an inch of water you think you’re gonna drown”. He was hysterical, deep, and thoughtful. RIP John, you were one-of-a-kind.
John prine will be missed never even heard of him till satellite radio wish I had got 2 meet him personally or attend one of his concerts he will be missed by me like he was a family member but I will listen 2 his songs as long as I live I hope his family will. I know I'm late to it but i remember my dad driving around playing paradise by john denver and it took me til i was 10 years old to know it was john prine that originally sang it and from there he always held a special part of me
Everyone's story in life and of life is different. Prine wrote a ton of fantastic songs. The one I connect to deeply is Sound of The Speed of Loneliness. It is about someone dealing with substances. I had an issue with alcohol in my youth for a time, but I licked it and I am glad. I have no clue what was in John's mind when he wrote that song, and for those that get a big connection with any one of his songs, I do not know that it matters. What matters is that the song moves us, beyond simple musical enjoyment. It moves something deep inside of us. To all the John Prine fans, share his tunes with people, especially the younger folks. If his music moves them, they will keep it alive and moving along to the next person and so on it goes.
Lake Marie is one of my all time favorite secular songs, it always lifts my spirits and reminds me of all the fun times with my kids. However, the fact that John Prine said Hello in There was his favorite song of his, pretty much tells you all you need to know about who he actually was as a person.
"Please don't bury me in the cold, cold ground. No, I'd rather they cut me up and pass me around." John's death sits heavy on my heart. Wish I had seen him live...
Lovin Mr John and it would be to hard to pick just one....Thanks for the History of some his songs I truly enjoyed it and Saddened and goin miss John's Stories he had so many left to share ..Goodness Grace and Peace to the Prine Family...ol couple way down in TX...Again thanks heart lifting !

My heart goes out to Fiona and their family. I know I personally knew John Prine, he had seemed like one of my closest confidants since I was a kid. He will be sorely missed. I can’t describe the sadness is
Ive been listening to John Prine since the 60s and 70s. Use to frequent a beer and wine bar where a man would sing on the wknds. He played several Prine songs including Sam Stone. Shame we lost John and others to something that China could have prevented. Happily we can hear Prine's music at Outlaw County on Sirrus #60
Give a listen to John & Iris DeMent doing “In Spite of Ourselves”. I heard it on a jukebox in a little bar in Savannah, Mo one night-the whole bar was singing along…
As ayoung Want To Be guitar Pickers singer-songwriter in the mid-70s John Prine was one of my first Heroes I cut my teeth on his first album learning all those songs and playing them all night long tell my fingers would bleed

I've been listening to Prine since 78. It has never once crossed my mind that any song was country.
If it is country, the genre is intelligent country, and that was a small circle.

If his music moves them, they will keep it alive and moving along to the next person and so on it goes.
you never even called me by my name ... will be rem forever... John Prine
When I first heard the song "Hello in There" I was hooked. It wasn't long that I was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimers
His interview with Mark Maron was replayed when Mr Prine passed. A fabulous record of his youth, rise to notoriety, and music.
I love John Prine and George Strait.
I don't like the misleading click bait to this post.
michaelinminn Agreed
Agreed.
Agreed...
Unsubbed and forgotten. Just plain dumb.
"Sam Stone" an anthem for all those who lived and died during the Vietnam War.
came home, to his wife and family
Lake Marie is one of my all time favorite secular songs, it always lifts my spirits and reminds me of all the fun times with my kids. However, the fact that John Prine said Hello in There was his favorite song of his, pretty much tells you all you need to know about who he actually was as a person.
oh YES to that !
"Please don't bury me in the cold, cold ground. No, I'd rather they cut me up and pass me around." John's death sits heavy on my heart. Wish I had seen him live...
After almost a year and so many covid deaths, I still miss John Prine most.

John Prine will be missed
How sad I will always remember him, I love doing his summers end at all my jams. Rip.
John Prine is a hit maker! He rocked! ❤️
I am still getting used to the idea that John Prine is gone from this world. This is a huge loss.
Gone but not gone, ya know?
I'll never get accustomed to knowing he's gone.... can only dream of what he'd made of this pandemic....with John it'd been something we could've all smiled about and hummed the tune with our own shit-eatin' grins...
Totally doesn’t seem real. 😔
I remember performing "Hello in There" 45 years ago. Now I'm the guy in the song.
I still get choked up when I hear one of his songs. Outside of family, only John Lennon and George Harrison had that affect on me.
My biggest regret in life I did not find John prine's music sooner
I've never heard most of those cover hits, but I have heard every John Prine original many, many times.
As ayoung Want To Be guitar Pickers singer-songwriter in the mid-70s John Prine was one of my first Heroes I cut my teeth on his first album learning all those songs and playing them all night long tell my fingers would bleed
