  • Hello...? It's me, I'm back! I'm pretty nervous to send this one out but it was a fun way to come back to the channel with purpose. Keep your eyes peeled because there will be more videos coming (in the air tonight hehe). Thanks to every single person who has commented encouraging me to return.
Phil Collins really did go so hard for this soundtrack though, right?

And yet Trey Parker and Matt Stone still took the piss out of him on South Park for losing at the Oscars because they had worked very hard on : blame Canada

Seeing people go 180° on the soundtrack over the years is fascinating

This is the first time hearing that people didn't like it when it came out. Granted I was a child when the movie came out. Idk why children really connect with Phil Collins on this soundtrack.

Phil Collins was entering the period of career when his hits stopped coming and his overexposure in the 80s led to his reversal backlash in the 90s. It was very similar to the 80s going cold turkey off disco. People were tired of seeing Phil Collins. Phil Collins on the soundtrack probably hurt Tarzan's box office numbers in 1999. But with the passage of two decades and Phil's semi-sabbatical, adults have now returned and recognized Phil's great catalog of work from the 70s to 90s. Checking out the Tarzan soundtrack happened afterwards. Phil has had a kind of comeback in the past 10 years as a living legend after being a living joke for a while.

It’s not a 180, it’s that those who it influenced grew up.

South Park "Timmy 2000" episode shows exactly the feelings of Phil in 2000.

I grew up on Tarzan on VHS and so I never understood why some people older than me in internet circles didn't like the Tarzan soundtrack like I did. I see it as the same phenomenon as the Star Wars prequels. There was a group of young adults who already had some established tastes in what they wanted out of Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, and when they got something different, they were understandably upset. There's a group of people older than me who grew up on Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King, and when it came time for Tarzan, they got something different than what they had been getting from Disney for ten years at that point. Now that the kids who grew up on Tarzan and the movies that came after are growing into adults with opinions on these movies, the narrative is starting to shift. Sure enough, I love the Star Wars prequels, and I think Phil's work for Tarzan is some of my favorite he's done.

Not necessarily older people, but a very specific generation. One which grew up with the Disney Renaissance and therefore overlooked that there have always been Disney movies where the songs came mainly from the off (Bambi, the Rescuers), plus, somehow there were people who really hated Phil Collins music (I suspect because it wasn't "manly" enough). I have a few cricisisms regarding Tarzan, the music isn't one of them. To this day I feel that it was the right decision to NOT make Tarzan sing.

The Star Wars reference is close, but missing a huge part.
It wasn't just "young adults" that got upset. Nor that we had "established tastes."
It was every Star Wars fan and we had the OG trilogy.
If it wasn't for dopey Millennial children, everyone would have hated Star Wars.
Children excited to have their own Star Wars and toys and zero analytical skills loved the prequels.
      And so they lasted.
It's not that older generations grew to love the movies.. the Millennial children just got older. And Gen Z sees the movies as a necessity in the saga.
      But the elders.
      We still dislike the prequels.

Did you know, by the way, that...
    A. Phil Collins, as a member of Genesis, was involved in the writing of the Mike and the Mechanics song "A Call to Arms"?*
    B. As for *this* work, to be more specific on what Mattia said last year, he also sang the _Tarzan_ songs in Spanish, German, French, and Italian?
    C. Collins also did the voice of the two polar bears in _Balto_ (1995) and Lucky the vulture in _The Jungle Book 2_ (that one being the same year he wrote and sang the _Brother Bear_ songs, including a French version of "Look Through My Eyes")?
When you said, "Miss Honey" were you referring to the one from Richard Scarry's works or from _Matilda_ by Roald Dahl?
