    I’ve been looking at a lot of ideas for retractable casters, but this idea is definitely part of the solution for my jointer and planer work bench.

    Hey mate, 20 seconds in and I say ducking brilliant by design, simplicity, aesthetics and overall functionality. This is the design I'm going with and thanks heaps.

    That is utterly brilliant - I've been looking for a way to replace the castors on my planer/thicknesser with something more steady and this is it!

    This is a really nice design. Subscribed after seeing some of the innovative designs on this and other videos of yours.
    There is something really important that it looks like you did on yours but didn't mention. If the bottoms of the caster supports are not parallel to the ground the casters won't turn very well. I bought a similar vintage Craftsman saw with the steel frame and Craftsman wheel kit. The lifts didn't bring the stems of the casters all the way to vertical and I had to lift the heavy saw to get the casters to turn. They worked OK after I modified the mounts. Just wanted to point this out for anyone that decides to build their own.

    Thanks for a great video. I appreciate the design walk through and issue list. If one is building a lift they should already know woodworking. Focusing on design and operation is what helps.

    I have sought design ideas for a round beer keg dolly with single-action retractable casters. Your design is a perfect model to follow and has my brain a-churning’. In addition, I was in a fixed mindset that it had to be a mettle welding project. Thank you for the inspirational video.

  • @miketheredleg9821
    @miketheredleg9821 3 года назад

    Extremely great idea. The problem with most retractable casters, is that you have to be able to get to the caster to flip up or down. This would allow you to put it against a wall or in corner and flip up or down easily. One thing a person could insert a pin or screw into the disc shaped section of the arm to prevent arm to travel any farther, rather than relying to be stopped by table leg.

    I've looked at dozens of designs and this is my favorite. I will try to build it. If you sold plans I'd buy them. While I can craft my own--buying yours would provide at least three advantages: (1) I'd give back a slight bit to your originality and effort; (2) I'd save a bit of time; (3) I'd be able to take your counsel and wisdom about whether the system is best served by attach the wheels to either the 24" or the 96" side of my 24x96" rolling workstation (and whether I should use 4 or 6 wheels on a heavy table). Best of luck. Of course, I subscribed.

    I noticed you added extra screws to the hinges close to the pivot points. That's very important and prevents bending the hinges due to the high loads this design produces.
    Well done. I really like this one.

    Nice build. I have a very similar saw but my cart is much different. However, I see that you have some kind of brush to block dust in the blade height adjustment slot. What did you use there? That is where a lot of my dust comes from.

    Nice clean looking design Justin Half inch of lift is plenty to move it around BTW the shop modifications look great I’m a firm believer that working in a nicely finished area Helps you do more professional work overall Plus i like to work in a clean area as well working in commercial construction for over 20 years professionally guys used tomake fun of m because I kept the place and myself clean even though i was making saw dust all day long ! I might be borderline O.C.D. ? But it works for me LOL i worked out of a Kennedy brand tool box and. Ive always said that if i had a picture of my tool box from years ago. I would bet. That most of its contents are arranged the exact same way years later with the minor exception of a few additional tools or newer models

    A good design Sir...Did you refer or is it all your own work, and how did you decide what position the timbers that hold the castors should be in...?

    • @JustinDepew
      @JustinDepew  5 лет назад

      I had some inspiration from Carl (see description)

    • @JustinDepew
      @JustinDepew  5 лет назад

      I put the timbers that hold the casters where they are based on lifting the saw 1/2 inch off the ground.

  • @MichelSatoer
    @MichelSatoer 3 года назад

    Wouldn't it be simpler the other way around? So the casters are part of the table, and the solid blocks are retractable. Then you don't have to take the swivel of the casters in account. The wider base also makes it more stable when the solid blocks are pushed down.

    • @JustinDepew
      @JustinDepew  3 года назад +2

      No, for two reasons. The casters allow for a pivot point. Since the wheels are round they make the lifting action easy as they rotate and translate when lifting the saw. It would be much harder to lift using square legs. Also it's much better to have the legs be ridgid and solid with no moving parts since the saw sits on the legs. If the legs were on pivots or other moving system, there would likely be play and it would not be as stable when sitting on the legs.
