  • After the Vietnam War ended in 1975, many Vietnamese from the south fled to the US escaping political persecution and seeking better economic possibilities. The US government initially tried to disperse the Vietnamese all over the US, but the most Vietnamese eventually found their way to Texas and California. Here in California, there are 2 main Vietnamese communities, one in San Jose, which we've already visited, and the other one in Westminster. Roughly 12-13 years ago I was actually here, and even though I wasn't too big of a Vietnamtown enthusiast then, it was unique enough for me to remember. Since we're here in LA, and now I'm making videos about all these Asian towns, let's go visit Westminster's Little Saigon!
Also, can someone please educate me on why Vietnamese people are so obsessed with jewelries?!?!!?

My family lived in Westminster from 1959 to 1967 so we were there before the influx of refugees from
Vietnam. Most of the buildings and dwellings shown in this video did not exist when I lived in Westminster.

I haven’t been there for a very long time. My experience with So Cal little Saigon is that the people are not very social and the shops close very early, we would retreat to China Town after dark. Things look different but the buildings are the same, it’s true there are more Vietnamese there than Bay Area. We use to book our hotel room near there or China Town so we have a quick retreat after dark.

Unfortunately I don't speak Vietnamese so I can't infiltrate the aunties and uncles lol, but yeah we met a very welcoming Vietnamese-Chinese 越南華僑 (what's the proper phrase in English anyways?) at the Chinatown Temple

Obsession with jewelry? Americans have a saying: "Diamonds are a girl's best friend." Another reason is shopping malls are basically designed for women. Let me know how many mens stores you find in shopping malls. You can probably count them on one hand! This is also the reason you usually have to walk through the women's section first before you find the men's departments in the back or on the second floor! Women love fashion. I remember my ex-wife's shoes took up 90% of our shoe rack. My 3 or 4 pairs were relegated to the bottom, of course. 😂 Thanks for posting this video. I liked your explanations of the Buddha statues and other comments. I didn't even know there was a Little Saigon, so really appreciated the tour!
