    Two English kings Harold and Richard the Third, were hacked to death on the battlefield, so axes may have been involved. Also Charles the First was the victim of an axe, as was his grandmother Mary Queen of Scots. Not a weapon to be taken lightly, in fact during the Wars of the Roses many people died in battle from both axe, mace and sword wounds, and the battles of that war were bloodier, than those in the later English Civil War.

    • @glitterboy2098
      @glitterboy2098 2 года назад +1

      depends on the scene and actor. there will usually be at least three sets of weapons, often four.. a "hero" set which is the real thing, made to look really good. these are used for close ups and other scenes where the detail of the weapon will be seen. then there is a version used for longer shots and such which are simplified and lighter, easier to wear and carry but still looking convincing unless you see them upclose.
      for battle scenes you usually have 'stunt' versions made from rubber or otherwise designed to look real but be safe to swing around where you might hit people. the main actors and foreground cast will usually get a high quality version to look good on screen, background extras (especially ones in the far background) usually get lower quality ones that up close look fake but in the background at least look like a weapon.

    • @zeening

      the reason he quenched the back half of it like that is because YOU WANT rapid cooling because that hardens it and you need the back half that holds in the handle to be hard and NOT soft because you do not want it deforming, dropping the axe axe, or breaking.... notice he didn't quench the cutting edge...also... it's not a long skinny blade.... clearly you have not seen much blacksmithing lol

      "replica"

    • @Chauntecleer
      @Chauntecleer 3 года назад

      Actually, attaching an axe head to the shaft that way is fairly common, that’s how tomahawks are attached, for example. As long as the fit is tight, which it looks like it is, this method can be as strong as a wedge, and much easier to replace, if necessary
      Also, just because it’s a replica doesn’t mean it’s not usable or shouldn’t be made well

  • @Chauntecleer
    @Chauntecleer 3 года назад +16

    Like 90% of the axes they showed in the beginning would never work in an actual battlefield, they should’ve called this video “prop axes” instead of “medieval battleaxes”

    Do they use plates rather than blocks because its easier?

    • @whisperzzar3321
      @whisperzzar3321 3 года назад +3

      Forge welding alternating layers of differing steel plates like done here is to make the "Damascus" steel look in the finished product. It is only done this way for the pattern in the finished steel. If you were just making an axe for normal usage, a block of 1080 steel or the like would be just fine.

    • @glitterboy2098
      @glitterboy2098 2 года назад

      using multiple plates folded and hammered together actually produces a stronger result than just carving a solid block. it has to do with the crystalline microstructures that result from the working. the end result is stronger and less prone to damage. in medieval times a blacksmith would take a bar of iron and hammer it flat, fold it over on itself, hammer it flat again, etc. many times before doing the actual work of shaping it. the exact number depending heavily on the quality of the metal. (cultures with really poor quality iron to start with, like Japan, usually develop techniques of doing this process an immense number of times to get results that cultures with access to higher quality iron could do with only a few dozen folds)

    "With a single blow it could break through a knights armor and fatally wound him." Uh... no it couldn't Unless the knight was only wearing padded armor like a gamberson it is very unlikely. Mail armor you'd run the risk of fracturing bone, and possibly the mail breaking and causing a cut, but full field plate would pretty much be unfazed outside of bashing their helmet in order to cause a possible concussion. I was surprised when I watched this though. Some of the examples shown in this video are crappy wall hanging mall ninja axes. The one made by the actually smith is quite nice though. It's well made. Why not just show actual well made replica's like the one made in this episode? They aren't hard to find. Oh well. It was fun being pedantic just for lols sake.
