  • Eastland County of Texas was an area of excitement and explosive growth after oil was discovered there in 1917. Many beautiful brick buildings were constructed during this period of prosperity. Today we explore this area a century later.

My Great grandfather owned one of the first black owned cafe there in the 40’s. It was located at the corner of Patterson and N. Basset. I want to visit there because it’s so much of my family history there.

Marvin, was that cafe previously owned by a Greek man named Jim George? I think he retired and returned to Greece in the late 50’s or early 60’s

@@WillWoods-qg5pu I don't know I was a little boy at that time, there was the Pullman junkyard next to our cafe and a Piggly wiggly on the other side. A cross the street was a large tire shop

I was lucky to live in Cisco back in late 60s. I was a young girl having the time of my life riding my bicycle all over town. My father was the minister of The First Presbyterian Church. These were times in my life I will never forget. Thank you for a great video! I loved it! My eyes really lit up when I saw The Presbyterian Church! Cisco and my memories will live in my heart forever!

Another great presentation and narration about what helped make our great state. In addition to the largest natural swimming pool, there was once a zoo with exotic animals located very near the pool.

I am old enough to remember having to drive through all of the small towns on Hwy. 80 between Midland and Dallas when I was a kid before I-20 was completed. Eastland was my favorite. Some of our good friends moved to Eastland about that time. My childhood chum later became mayor.

Cisco had the world's largest swimming pool, an 8 story brick hotel, and the world famous Santa Claus, kidding, bank robbery. A really nice little lake..

You did not mention the Cisco swimming pool, which was billed as the largest swimming pool in the world when I went there in the 1950s and 60s. My grandparents lived in Ranger (two doors down from the Methodist church there), and we went to Cisco often for the pool. I also visited the Conrad Hilton hotel here.

I went to a movie at the Majestic in Eastland around 1978. You should go to Gorman (20 miles south). It is also in Eastland County. Ask to walk through the grade school and also the old gym. And talk about a football field..... like no other!

Brownwood has a beautiful 11 (?) floor hotel downtown but they seem to care little for it's potential value for tourism. So sad to be from Brownwood.

I grew up in Eastland and most of my family still lives there.
My sister lived in the newly restored hotel across from the Hilton hotel there in Cisco until about a year ago. ❤
The big story I heard growing up was about the Santa clause bank robber.
The main thing I’ve always remembered about the story is how he was caught in Eastland and hung behind the majestic theatre where everyone could see.
I remember my mom showing me the place he was hung.
My papa lived there during the hanging. I’m pretty sure he might of went to it. Now I’m wondering so I’ll have to ask my family.
My family could tell a lot of stories about Cisco, Eastland and Ranger!
All of them were so interesting to hear growing up.
I just went with my sisters last year to see where the biggest swimming pool in Texas used to be in Cisco.
They told me all about the animals that used to be there, too.
      Pretty cool.
