TUNNELS OF HOOVER DAM

  • In 1930 there was a railroad built from Bolder city to the Hoover Dam to train supplies for the construction of Hoover Dam. The trail now starts on Lake Shore Drive at the Lake Mead National Recreation Area Alan Bible Visitor Center trailhead. You can also take the trail for the River Mountain Loop Trail which takes you to the hot springs on the Colorado River.
    After the dam was completed in 1935, the railroad stopped running, and in 1962 the tracks were removed. Heading north there is 4 miles of trail leading through five railroad tunnels. Each of the five tunnels are 25 feet in diameter so large equipment could easily pass through.
    I am trying to put up two videos a week, and will always have a video on Area 51 or the NTTR a week. There is just so much history in Nevada besides the Test Site, and it's been highly requested that I go back to showing the history of Nevada.
    I hope you all enjoy the extra videos, and as always
    THANK YOU FOR WATCHING Christian!!!

      Christian, do you think the 2053+ nuclear tests (over a thousand in the US) had something to do with climate change? Is that why they are spraying in the atmosphere - is it to cover this up?

    Christian - When I was six years old [I'm 60 now], we lived in Las Vegas for a year. At that time [1965] a narrow gauge railroad ran through those tunnels. I don't know when they removed it, but I still remember the small steam locomotive they used to pull open passenger cars along the route. We lived off Charlston Blvd., only one-half block from the edge of the desert. Today, the city goes on for miles and miles beyond the street we lived on. As a young child, I had a very serious medical condition that took away most of my eyesight. Shortly before we moved to Las Vegas, I had eye surgery that restored some of my sight [and even more in later years]. As a result, my first memories of seeing anything are memories of my eight year-old sister guiding me through the desert near our house. One funny memory of my childhood desert explorations is my mother constantly warning us to not go near any cars we found parked out there. In later years, my mom told us she was really worried we would come across a car with a dead body in it. The mafia, which controlled the Las Vegas back then, had a bad habit of leaving their victims in the desert.

    • @adventureswithchristian6967
      @adventureswithchristian6967  5 лет назад +1

      I have friends that have lived here their entire lives, and your right about the mafia. When they would jetski, and wipe out they were always nervous about a body floating near them. In those days the mafia made a lot of concrete boots. While excavating for new projects they find human bones a lot.
      Sorry about your eye sight!!

    Thanks so much for this video. I had no idea there was an informative trail there. I've been on the dam tour 3 times, once as a child, then as an adult. The last time we went, a lady was freaking out when entering the elevator. Her friends were trying to calm her down, stating everything is ok. She was claustrophobic, and the second that door closed, and we started to move, she fainted dead away. What an experience.

I think its great the way that Sean comes along with you for the ride and how you're still able to make your viewers feel as though we are right there along for the ride. I know that Hoover Dam has a lot of history behind it and through it as it was being built. It was truly exceedingly difficult for the workers of that time. You can catch the trail at the parking lot of a hotel called The Hacienda. It's not a hard hike in terms of elevation gain, it's relatively flat. but remember you will be walking 4+ miles in the Nevada heat which can be down right brutal. When I hiked it, it was it was 90+ around Oct 1st when I reached the last tunnel right before the trail ends at the upper parking lot of the Nevada side of the Hoover dam a monsoon hit hard. The temperature change was pretty drastic, walking back the temp was down but it was humid as hell. It's a good walk with alot interesting stuff on the side of the trail left over from construction of the dam.

The trail ended when you got to one of the tunnels that was completely sealed up BLM style. Wondering if that's still the case ?
