Me and my cousins/friends went to see Drive in theaters on release. They saw the trailers and marketing leading up to the movie, I did not. They were expecting a "Fast and Furious" action type racing movie, not a neo-noir film. They walked out of the theaters bored, disappointed, and mad. I walked out with a huge smile on my face, because I just saw one of the best films I had ever seen.

Michael : (Spoiler Warning) What I liked most about this movie, was that I started out, thinking, “It’s not what it looks like. His brother was set up. It’s one of those kind of movies.” And, my expectations were subverted, BRILLIANTLY. This family ARE the BAD GUYS! And you don’t really GET that, till the end. Only Gosling’s character understands that. And the death of his mom, releases him from their life of crime, and he’s willing to pay the price. Or, that’s how I saw it? I write this, before watching the review. What rating would you give the movie? I’m curious? I give it a, “B+,” or maybe an, “A.” I have a feeling it will go up, when I’ve had time to let it settle in my mind, as such? Just watched it, and came here to see what Chris thinks ✌️

I loved this movie. He says that characters in the movie where metaphors. That is something that I enjoy in stories. The characters are these grand ideas attempting to occupy the same space, and the moments where they bump against one another is fascinating. That is the core of character. They are arguments. Comics understand that (All Star Superman is one of the greatest Superman stories where Supes finds that he is dying and there isn't even a panel of him dealing with that emotionally) . Folk tales understand that. I think movies are flexible enough to do that as well.
It was the directors take on a kung fu or martial arts movie.

Theyungcity23 I agree with you in most of your statement... But i gotta say... Only God Forgives isn't a story, it doesn't tell you a cohesive actions going on in sake of a sense, and that's what i loved about this film, also what makes it one of my favorite films of all time... It does't tell you a story or tries to do so, it gives you messages... Just that and i think that's the best goal of pure cinematography... Not aiming at a good story, instead, aim at a message...

I love this film, and am not exactly certain why. I disagree about the characters. Julian was a great. He was conflicted about his brother, had a bad relationship with his mother, was strong and smart but ultimately too insecure to live a life of crime. I can talk at lenght about him and his motivations. The same about Crystal and The Angel of Vengeance.

Vlad Ivanovici don't get me wrong, there is a very big issue with the police, many are not properly trained and others have some sort of power complex that leads them to becoming a danger to the public.
but everything that has come up recently in the news is nothing new. its *always* happened. only now have people really started to stand up to the bullshit going on. or maybe a better way to put it is: only now has society acknowledged the people protesting this.
back to what i was saying though, despite these problems, most cops still follow the rules and don't end up shooting and torturing multiple people like the guy in the movie did

my theory on why Gosling gets his hands cut off. His mother brings up that he killed his father with his bare hands, and earlier in the film you see his hands tied down to a chair. to me this tells me that Julian didn't know what he would have done if his hands weren't tied up. his hands are his violent nature and cutting them off freed him of that. I also saw a lot of the characters as metaphors. Chang being God and Julian, Billy and Crystal being 3 different incantations of the Devil.

Basically agree. Especially about the ending. One thing I do love about this movie and Drive however is how dreamlike and symbolic they both were. Nothing that's happening ever really feels real, yet is all oozing with reality. You're left with this sort of abstraction that ranges from dark and grungy to near euphoria. It ends up becoming compelling in ways that a realistic version of either story would never even touch.

I was waiting for your review on this, Chris. "Drive" is one of my favorite films of all time, and has become an inspiration for my own filmmaking endeavors. However, the mixed festival reactions gave me pause to rent this on iTunes. After your review, I'm thinking I might wait for a $1.29 Redbox rental instead of a $6.99 iTunes rental.

...Remember it's an ART film. It's supposed to impact people directly in different ways. When one person looks at paint splattered on a canvas to create abstract images they see different emotions or things that are supposed to mean something else. And some people see abstract shapes and nothing more. Just because one person enjoys figuring out what the painting means to them and one doesn't see the point doesn't mean one of their tastes is superior. It just means they have different tastes.

Summed up my feelings perfectly, except I thought the ending was brilliant. Having it end with Chang doing his thing (won't spoil) was a stroke of genius to me. I think him and Julian understood each other in the end and came to a mutual conclusion.
For me the only real character who was developed, or rather fully formed was Julian's Mother. If Chang is a metaphor for God, then she is a metaphor for Satan.
Overall this film reminded me of Refn's Valhalla Rising with the metaphors and violence.

Only God Forgives was MUCH better than Drive. The entire film was steeped in symbolism and, therefore, left up to interpretation, which is I guess why many disliked it. It had some of the best cinematography of the year. The soundtrack was spectacular. Deep tormented characters that serve as a continuation of the plot and to give a message as spiritual metaphors. It was also very entrenched in Thai culture and didn't sacrifice authenticity for western stereotypes aside from Refn's signature graphic violence, which isn't exclusively a western tool, but is no doubt more prominent in western movies as a means for story arcs. This is shown here. All sins are punished for and with violence aside from Julian's mother who is never directly is shown committing violence, but she is punished the same as all others: with violence. Refn knew exactly what he was doing and he was doing. Watch Valhalla Rising, it's structurally similar to OGF in many ways, but has completely different symbolism. He made exactly what he wanted to create. This movie is not to entertain you. This is a piece of art that uses film as a medium. This movie is masterpiece and deserves much more credit than people give it.

***** No, the cinematography is near to perfect (in my opinion). As an artist myself I really understand the angles used by Refn and in each shot they tell the story, where the dialog may lack, the picture itself is screaming the words at you. For me thats masterful work. It's small details in the movies I enjoy and even the soundtrack itself is amazing. I'm just a massive cinematography nerd and I can really appreciate these movies based on small qualities the director has included.
If you're used to enjoying movies like The Avengers and Fast & the Furious franchise, you wont be able to appreciate these movies.

*SPOILER*: The ending makes total sense. Chang being the God of justice, is putting nemesis upon Julian; cutting off his hands. BUT, this is the redemption of Julian. He's no longer walking down claustrophobic red corrioders that symbolize his mothers birth canal he hadn't gotten out off yet. He's finally free, hence the reason of the setting in the last scene taking place in nature. Respect Stuckmanns opinion but go watch it yourself. It's very much an unqualifiedly individual experience.

Visually the movie was great, but a movie needs more than visuals, alot more, like, dialog, or characterization. I really liked Drive a fair bit, but I don't particularly like art movies and after watching this I was just frustrated that I spend an hour and a half of my life on this thing, much like Valhalla Rising, which was also made my Refn. Plus, god, that ending was just so anticlimactic and, again I use the word frustrating, that's what this movie was to me, bits here and there gave me hope and interested me and then followed up by... nothing. I tried to examine it, I tried to read into it, I tried to find meaning in anything I could, but I couldn't find anything in this to come away with, it felt shallow and self indulgent to me.

Didn't like Drive, sure as hell didn't like this movie. Just another movie where apparently shallow "characters" and the lack of a plot or motivations are apparently perfectly fine when the visuals and soundtrack are good. Newsflash, no it doesn't. Also why does Gosling get so much praise for his "acting", when all it comes to is just walking around looking bored and saying around five words a movie. That's not acting, anyone can do that.

I completely agree with you. The plot of the film is about a quiet and precise protagonist who becomes involved in crime in order to protect some damsel in distress and/or her child. That description depicts so many action films so why the hell aren't they getting as much credit as this film? Oh! Is it because of the prolonged pauses that feel completely out of place? The characters were so underdeveloped that I couldn't care less about what happened to them.

I agree with you in terms of the characters being metaphors. However I felt that the police officer represented justice or vengeance rather than being god. I also felt that Julians mother represented evil or obsession. Gosling's character fell somewhere in the middle. Perhaps he represented humanity and a struggle between right and wrong, since he is conflicted about his brothers death and is tempted by his mother to do something that he was unsure of. Just my take on it.
