One thing I have noticed, after having been married and keeping house, and raising kids, over many years, is that less is more. If you have fewer decorations and things sitting around, your home LOOKS cleaner, even if you haven't cleaned. A less cluttered look, seems cleaner, and when you actually clean, there is less to pick up and move. You have places to put things away, because you have decluttered. I have learned to buy LESS! I see sooo many cute things that I want, but I have to walk away! I think another key is, if things are precious, or good, but not to YOU, let someone else enjoy them. Can't keep a house tidy with 5 kids? Seriously? There was 9 in our house (13 years between oldest and youngest). My mom and dad both took care of the house until we started getting older and were assigned chores based on age. Example: 9 is when you started doing dishes. 14 is when you started help cooking. All the time growing up we had certain other chores to clean (again based on age). All of (boys and girls...sex didn't matter) us learned to do household chores, learned to sew, learned to take care of our cars.

Daphne reminds me of my own mom. My mother was raised during the Great Depression and her parents were poor farmers. My mom would keep food that was expired and I worried about it. When she got dementia I was cleaning out the kitchen cupboards and discovered ten containers of garlic salt. My mother was short and petite and kept the spices in the cupboard over the stove. She obviously pushed the garlic salt containers back too far and couldn't see them so she would buy more. It simply amazed me. That was just the start of my discoveries in my mother's home.

Psychologically cleaning out things and then recycling, donating or throwing it out is very delightful feeling. What’s annoying is when you end up needing some of the items you gave away a week later OR when after asking your family/friends if they want anything before you donate it, they then take the stuff you need from the bags left out for Diabetes, Big Brothers or other charity only to have the charity call & tell you that if you only have one item to donate that I shouldn’t tell them to come pick it up!😳 Then after wondering what the hell was that all about, finding family members/friends wearing the items they said you offered &/or the things in their homes! They just look sheepish! I have had to watch out the windows until the pickup so I don’t end up embarrassed with a practically empty bag!
