      Hello Marquerite. Yes, these deliciously fragrant Peonies, Iris and other plants make strolling through our gardens magically delightful. We are grateful that many of our Peonies were planted here back in the 1940's-50's by the original owners for us to still enjoy today. I will be sure to pass on your Birthday greeting #78 to Richard.

    I love your pretty peonies, especially the Itoh yellow one, and the fern leaf red one. I planted 2 new peony varieties last fall, and neither of them made it through our winter. One was a yellow Itoh Peony, and the other was a Coral colored tree peony. I know what you mean about bindweed being awful, I always hand pull and discard it. Stay safe, and God bless you both. ~Margie

    • @WisconsinGarden
      @WisconsinGarden  4 года назад

      Hi Margie. How disappointing for both your Itoh and Japanese Fern-leaf Peony not to make it through winter. Neither are inexpensive plants. Hope your garden center or online purchase offered a guarantee or replacement.
      Did you plant them in full sun and in what kind of soil. While we added some compost formula mix for the Itoh, our Japanese Fern-leaf is actually planted in a rock garden perhaps 9-10 years ago. Both need good drainage, as many plants do not like their roots constantly in standing water or they will rot and die. Both plants are considered hardy and seem to handle our Wisconsin winters fairly well and without problems. Don't get me started on Bindweed. Grrrrrrrrr.

    I loved your tour. I have sadly tried planting Peonies so many times in honor of a nursing home pt. I once cared for, (Mr Joe). I’m a retired RN & his wife always brought me such beautiful peonies for taking care of Mr. Joe. I wish I was a fortunate Neighbor, so you could help me.

      Good Morning Terry. We always anxiously await those beautiful Peony blossoms to fill the air. Just imagine trying to design and invent them. Depending upon where you live, Peonies grow best in zone 3-8 and grow best with periods of cold weather during winter. Keep up the amazing work you are doing at the nursing home. Gardeners make great neighbors. You're welcome to visit anytime. Thanks for watching, caring and sharing. We truly appreciate your warm support. Lynn & Richard www.WisconsinGarden.com

    • @WisconsinGarden
      @WisconsinGarden  2 года назад +1

      Hi Terry, we did some research and came up with some peony varieties that do well in warms zones. Here is what we found: Festive Maxima, Kansas, Raspberry Sundae and Sarah Bernhardt. You may have to order these online, but check with a local nursery first.
      You may also want to try some Tree Peonies. They grow on a woody stem and the stem doesn’t need to go dormant to produce blooms. They may start out kind of spindly, but they branch out and form beautiful, large blooms. Please keep up posted on your successes. You can always send pix via our email: lynn@WisconsinGarden.com

    I've had the yellow for close to 5 years now and it is glorious, you are going to love it. One thing to note on the yellow, the stems are stronger than the ordinary peony, it could be that all the Itoh's are that way but I only have the yellow one.

    • @WisconsinGarden
      @WisconsinGarden  4 года назад

      Hello Shirley. Since our Itoh is a hybrid of a woody stock tree peony and that of a herbaceous peony, that would account for these very study stalks that keep those huge blossoms upright. This was the first time,in 3 years, since planting, that it bloomed. It had 7 magnificent flower heads. Amazing and fairly fragrant.

    Such beautiful flowers on your peonies❣️ My favorite is the fern leaf peony, oh my! Followed by the white. Do you ever propagate and sell your peonies? Ooo, The pink with yellow middles that your husband likes are gorgeous too. How hard are they to grow? Have you ever stared them from seed?

    • @WisconsinGarden
      @WisconsinGarden  4 года назад +1

      Hello Lisa. It is really hard to claim a favorite Peony, but the fragrance from the white one is fantastic. And then there is the Itoh. What amazing blossoms. As mentioned in this video, we grew dozens of Tree Peonies from seed and only dug up and divided root balls to spread them around. We will be doing that again this fall as we haven't done this for over 10 years. We really don't sell plants as our mission is purely educational via our video blogs.

      Hi Scott. Lynn wants to know if you are grading her on a scale or pass/fail basis in her recent 'picture-book' garden video. Perhaps, I'm to blame for recently adding all of the plant botanical names and wonder if it's too distracting? Since all of us are teachers, we know it a 1st-grader can understand a name or plant, adults should easily grasp the same concept as well - right?. Maybe I should help Lynn publish a new picture book garden series. Hmm, just want we need, another project. Thanks for watching. Richard

      @@WisconsinGarden She gets an O for "Outstanding." I have enjoyed the addition of the botanical names. It takes me back to the early days of the Victory Garden on PBS. I was younger then, and that is one way I learned how to identify plant types. I support the idea of a new picture book. Perhaps it could be about how it takes all kinds of different people to make a garden grow and thrive and share in its beauty. Think of all the different people from all around the world that have found the love of gardening you and Lynn through Wisconsin Garden. That would be a GREAT story. A much needed story. Keep the love growing!

    Peonies LIKE rose fertilizer and bone meal......try it on all your tree and herbaceous ones

      Hi Tim. We had hoped you would specifically enjoy seeing this video. We had to piece filming it together over a 3-week period because they bloomed at several different times, more so this year than years past. Later this summer and early fall, we will be dividing and replanting our Peonies and will use your suggestion for fertilizing our tree and herbaceous Peonies with bone meal.
      Thank you again for another wonderful surprise which arrived Sunday afternoon You are so very kind, thoughtful and garden wise and we're proud to have gotten to know you as a friend. Keep an eye out for Friday's release of our video blog #953 "Garden Grass-Free Zone'. Again, thank you so very much. Lynn & Richard

    Lynn anytime you plant, especially transplanting established plants or shrubs...try using Espoma Biotone Plus....helps establish lush root systems fast>>>>>....Highly rated, should always have some around! Red Charm is considered the #1 Red Peony. Rick if you are going to divide peonies to spread around, wait till September to do it and make sure you have 3 to 5 "eyes" for each division.....

      Hi Tim. Perhaps we should start buying stock in Espoma products. You'd make a fantastic spokesperson. We will do our best and wait till late summer or early fall (September-ish) before dividing our Peonies, pending our fall schedules this year. As always, we thank your for your kind support, suggestions and surprises. Lynn & Richard

      Hi Thelma. We love these old peony species and their amazing fragrances that were probably planted here in the 1940's-50's by the original owners. Their son who lives in New Zealand, visited us last summer and was amazed at how his childhood memories were filled with trees and other plants he remembered.
      Imagine how different life would be if we didn't have memories? Thanks again for watching, caring and sharing. Lynn & Richard - www.WisconsinGarden.com

    Im your neighbor in MN 😊. Only a couple of my peony blossoms opened this year. The rest dried up and crumbled. Any idea why????

    • @WisconsinGarden
      @WisconsinGarden  4 года назад

      Hello MN neighbor. Without physically inspecting your Peonies, it's like asking 'Why do people get sick?" Just like people, plants can pick up diseases and die.
      One factor that causes bud blast of peonies is getting inadequate irrigation during dry periods. Other primary causes are not enough sunlight or too little nutrition.
      If the stems and leaves of your peony suddenly turn brown and begin to wilt in the early spring or summer, the plant may have contracted peony wilt. This disease is caused by the fungus Botrytis paeoniae. The fungus attacks and kills the tissues of the peony's leaves, stems and flower buds.
      In a broad interpretation bud-blast includes fungal diseases that affect flower buds. Following are the most common reasons why peony buds may fail to open. Botrytis blight, also called gray mold, is a common fungal disease of many plants including peonies. ... The young buds turn brown and fail to open. You can Google these terms to see photos that may also prove helpful.
      Digging and dividing is a great way to rejuvenate these wonderful plants. The best time to divide peonies is in September or October after they have begun to go dormant. When the foliage had begun to turn yellow and then brown, they can safely be dug and divided.
      Peonies also need to be cut back once a year. To keep the plant in top shape, prune peonies a bit later in the fall, after frost has killed the plant's leaves. Herbaceous peonies have new growth coming from the crown of roots each season while tree peonies maintain their woody stalks. Plus, once trimmed, they will not grow back a second round of blooms.
      Hope this was somewhat helpful. Perhaps some of our earlier videos could also prove helpful. Hi Penny. We have one about 20 years ago outside our kitchen window. Amazing fragrance. It lived for about 7-8 years then died. We looked for many years and were disappointed since not other local garden center had one even heard of them.
      Richard was attending a conference in Racine, Wisconsin about 6-7 years ago and on his way back he decided to stop at Milaeger's Garden Center. He was shocked to find that they had over a dozen Daphne plants and he knew he had to surprise me by bringing one home and adding it to our garden. We've been enjoying it's delightful spring fragrances ever since. Keep in mind this was several years ago.
      Check Burpee: www.burpee.com/perennials/shrubs/daphne-eternal-fragrance-prod099526.html, or talk with your local garden center and see if they would order one for you.

    • @WisconsinGarden

      Hello Art. The best time to move, divide or replant Peonies is in fall, before the first frost, giving the roots time to grow and get firmly established in a new place in your garden.

    Hi, I have a flower bed in front of my house, faces east so it gets morning sun and shade later. I have some spring flowers planted (tulips, daffodils) and some bearded iris. What else can I plant there for flowers in the summer and fall? Thanks!

    • @WisconsinGarden
      @WisconsinGarden  4 года назад +1

      Hello Stephanie. Assuming you want to plant perennials in your flower bed, and seeing that you have partial sun and partial to full shade in the afternoon, here are some shade plants to consider: Astilbe, Brunnera, Coral Bells, Foxglove, Jacob's Ladder, Primrose, Cardinal Flower,Toad Lily, Lenten Rose, Bleeding Hearts, Hellebore, Hydrangea, and fragrant Hosta.
      Now, you could consider annuals, adding them to you Thrillers, Fillers and Spillers. That could include Impatiens, Sweet Peas, Petunia, Lobelia, Balsam, Torenia, Browallia, Nemesia, Bocopa, Blue Ageratum, Hippo Rose Polka Dot Pant, Sweet Alyssum, Marigolds, California Bluebells, Begonias, Larkspur, Viola, and Plectranthus Velvet Elvis for starters. Hope this list was helpful. Hopefully your local garden center will have more options.

      @@WisconsinGarden thanks. Yes, looking for some color to fill in as the spring flowers die off and definitely perennial.
      On another note, tried the ant hill remedy of flooding. It seemed to be working but I have to go back and check on it today.

    • @WisconsinGarden
      @WisconsinGarden  4 года назад +1

      Make sure to water deeply, especially if the hill has been developing over several weeks or months. We look closely when cutting the lawn,1-2 times a week. to catch newly forming ant hills at the earliest stage. Watering works every time we do it. Hope this works for you. If needed, give it a couple of floodings, if you see any activity. TKS Lynn & Richard

    Question, are peonies deer resistant?

    • @WisconsinGarden
      @WisconsinGarden  4 года назад +1

      Hello Chrystal. Yes, Peonies are considered deer resistant. They live long and have very few diseases depending upon their care. Deer also do not like the toxicity, smell or taste of several other plants including; Astilbe, Marigold, Primrose, Daffodils, Foxglove, Snapdragons, Daylilies, Poppies, Sage, Salvia, Lavender and Bearded Iris. Many plants, bushes and trees are being bred specifically for being deer and.or disease resistant.
