The 50’s were a great decade in jazz history-very possibly the peak. I’m very fond of the Pepper album, and the Miles one. Pepper also plays tenor and clarinet on MTRS, which may be a revelation to people who only think of him as an alto player.
Saturday afternoon listen: All Analogue Productions: Cookin’ Miles Davis (2013) APRJ 7094, this is a Divinity album with Miles positively at his best! Relaxin’ Miles Davis (2013)APRJ 7129 another Miles at his best. Miles reminds me of Mohammad Ali, imagine him, if he never let himself get out of shape. Steaming’ (2014) APRJ 7200 all these are great Mono’s and you are so right on the drum solo!! Duke Ellington Masterpieces By Ellington (2014)APJ 4418. These sound so good on the Hana SL Mono cartridge! It’s great being able to share this with you!
Great albums, great music by fantastic musicians. For mono records I use a Audio-Technica AT33MONO cartridge and its great for its price point but I plan to get the Hana SL mono cartridge hopefully in 3 months or so.
Duke Ellington - Masterpieces is amazing and ridiculously good sounding to this day. It really sounds like his entire band is in the room. Pure magic. My personal favorite is Sonny Rollins Live At The Village Vanguard complete. The way he played that night perfect and the improvisation he brought to the classics is so goood..
That's genius. You get to have two top 10's instead of 11-20. I'm taking it a step further and claiming that I have 50 number 1's. Lol I enjoyed your video.
I think I'm on team 2 here!!! The records you talked about in this video are all just absolutely fantastic. True hard bop masterpieces most of them. Love the list!!
Thanks for the video Mr Kenny sir. The cool thing about these picks is that any one of them could be top five to number one contenders. Love them all and all are played often in my home
Hi Kenny, some great picks! Agree with every one of your choices. I don't hear too many people talking favorably about the great Ornette Coleman these days. As for Don Cherry - Symphony For Improvisors, spot on. One of my favorites, featuring Pharoah Sanders. Keep up the good work and thanks for the great video!
I have "Moanin'" but haven't played it yet. Will look forward to doing so. "Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section" is a classic, as is "Saxophone Colossus." Good choices!
I just added the Art Pepper Meets The Rhythm Section to my “Desert Island Picks” it’s got to be one of the best albums I’ve ever heard and I’m not surprised as it’s mono and was pressed by Quality Record Pressings with Bernie doing the mastering. Too bad the new Craft Bill Evans aren’t pressed at QRP but I can understand with their box set.😊
Fantastic mate. Some wonderful albums, sorry. I don't think I can't possibly add a record or take record away from your first or second team. I do also really like the keith jarrett köln concert, not just the piano, but sounds he makes, the squeaks and banging on the piano or the floor . Anyway, great videos. Thank you
Lee Morgan Sidewinder, Dolphy Out There, Coltrane and Hartman, Mingus Mingus Mingus, Monk Straight No Chaser, Bird anything, Billie anything, Miles Bitches Brew, Herbie Maiden Voyage and Headhunters, Sonny Rollins probably the one you chose Saxophone Colossus
I read a funny story about that art pepper LP.. supposedly he was very hung over from a wild night of drugs and alcohol, and he was woken up at the last minute, by his mother, who told him he was late for the recording session, so he threw on some clothes and ran straight out the house to the recording studio, which was this LP
Great picks Kenny,I have them all except the Bill Evans.I appreciate his playing but I prefer him on other peoples albums rather than his own as I find him too relaxed and too laid back for my taste. That Saxophone Colossus record is amazing,Max Roach's drums on Stode Road are jaw droppingly good. Masterpieces by Ellington is exactly that !
I can see about 15 inches of orange Impulse spines in your collection, look like originals from here. Would love to hear more about those. Probably all Coltrane?
If you want to hear the real Chet Baker before the drugs destroyed him; this is the album! Picture Of Heath, Tone Poet Pacific Jazz PJ-18 (2022) in glorious mono! He’s only 27 and it makes me so mad because he had the “world by the tail” If you don’t have this Kenny, you need to get it!😊
I assume you meant Stolen Moments is your favorite track from Blues & The Abstract Truth. I don't believe there is a title song on that album. Stolen Moments though. Definitely one of the greatest Jazz compositions ever! Great album!
@@kennysaudiophilerecordreviews Absolutely! I got you! Just confirming. Much as I love that album from start to finish, I don’t think anyone can deny that Stolen Moments is THE standout on that one! And yeah, what a lineup!
I like Bill Evans, especially Bill Evans at Town Hall Acoustic Sound Series AVER 78101 (2022) and You Must Believe In Spring Craft CR00455-45(2022) Two more great monos are the Chet Baker Picture of Heath Blue Note Tone Poet PJ-18 and the Art Pepper With The Rhythm Section Craft Rec. CR00491. If you like the stereo of that you’ll really like the mono as it smokes the stereo! If the new Craft, Bill Evans “Everyone Digs Bill Evans sounds as good as the Art Pepper, I’ll have to get it. All the Craft are not created equal but the monos I mention are smokin’
Kenny, stop apologizing for the superior mono sound on many of these jazz recordings. You need to get yourself a copy of the the Art Pepper Meets The Rhythm Section (Craft) in mono. I sold my stereo copy - it gave me a headache with all the L - R panning.
Sonny is currently my favorite. I just got the new total village vanguard tone poet and the RSD freedom weaver. I need to get the sound of Sonny. What is the version of colossus that u showed?

All classics, Kenny! Thanks for sharing and for turning me on to Duke Ellington’s “Masterpieces,” which I hadn’t known.
Your very welcome and thank you very much for watching my video 😊 ✌️
All killer albums, I’m fortunate enough to have all of them. Happy spinning
All great albums for sure 💯

GREAT list! Analogue Productions pressing of Saxophone Colossus is one of the best mono recordings I have ever heard!
It's a great album for sure. Thank you very much for your comments 😊
I think I'm on team 2 here!!! The records you talked about in this video are all just absolutely fantastic. True hard bop masterpieces most of them. Love the list!!
Thank you very much for your comments about my list 😊 ✌️
You are giving me a lot of ideas. I haven’t even heard of blues and the abstract truth.
It's a fantastic jazz album
Another great lesson in Jazz history. So helpful in planning my future Jazz music purchases. Thanks Kenny, your videos are greatly appreciated. A.G.
I sincerely appreciate that A.G. thank you very much for taking the time to watch my videos 😊✌️

Hey Kenny 🙌 God Bless Your Weekend! 🙏✌
God Bless you too and I hope that you have a great weekend ✌️

Great story...he made a spectacular album under the circumstances 👏 👌 🎶 .
Thank you very much for watching my video ✌️
Hey Kenny, great records! Jazz sounds best in mono!
Thank you very much for your comments 😊

I like the records that you picked, but I couldn’t have a list without some Thelonious Monk in there
Thelonious Monk was great 👍 👌 👏 🎶
Hi Kenny, god morning from Brasil (São Paulo)
Thank you very much for watching my videos from Brasil and I hope that you have a great day ✌️
Can I suggest John Coltrane's Favorite Things to this list... The piano solo by Mccoy Tyner at just 21 is sublime.
That is an excellent album for sure 👌 👏

I assume you meant Stolen Moments is your favorite track from Blues & The Abstract Truth. I don't believe there is a title song on that album. Stolen Moments though. Definitely one of the greatest Jazz compositions ever! Great album!
Yes, I was referring to Stolen Moments
I meant to say that "Blues and The Abstract Truth" was a great name for a album, sorry for the confusion 😊
@@kennysaudiophilerecordreviews Absolutely! I got you! Just confirming. Much as I love that album from start to finish, I don’t think anyone can deny that Stolen Moments is THE standout on that one! And yeah, what a lineup!

I'm will probably get the Art Pepper mono at some point for sure.
I like your second team. Maybe a few honorable mentions?
Thank you 😊....there are so many great jazz musicians, making a 2nd team was not difficult at all.
Kenny, stop apologizing for the superior mono sound on many of these jazz recordings. You need to get yourself a copy of the the Art Pepper Meets The Rhythm Section (Craft) in mono. I sold my stereo copy - it gave me a headache with all the L - R panning.

Thank you very much for the super thanks, I greatly appreciate it 😊.
Sonny is currently my favorite. I just got the new total village vanguard tone poet and the RSD freedom weaver. I need to get the sound of Sonny. What is the version of colossus that u showed?
It's close to an original pressing, it was probably issued within a year of the original release.
Blues and the Abstract Truth-- what’s with Hoe Down? Man.. such an odd song. Seems all wrong for this LP
Although I like the song, I can totally understand your opinion that it does not fit the vibe of the rest of the album.
