+Zach Johnson Dick Cavett. Recognize the greatness, treat them with respect, don't ask bullshit questions and be playful. Notice at the end he even puts his sunglasses on.
@@juanborjas6416 It can mean many different things, and is up to interpretation. It could mean something as literal as "Don't play what the other guys are playing, play your own stuff." whether that be as a general statement in music, or meaning specifically in the jam session.
The late great Sir Miles Davis was the epitome of cool. His individual style and music were impeccable. He taught me that it is okay to be different musically. Therefore, I am. 🙏🏽 Rest easy.
Dick Cavett is in re-runs currently on my cable channel. It is amazing how much time was allowed back then for in-depth interviews with interesting people like Miles. This is very unlike today's deplorarble rush/rush soundbite pace.
Cavett was sometimes too ingratiating to guests by half, I agree. And sometimes too calculatingly "witty", self-congratulation via fake self-deprecating humor. If you are the smartest guy in the room, you shouldn't telegraph your opinion. Still and all, he is a smart well-read guy and a good interviewer. He chose interesting guests and allowed them to expand their statements in a long format. Miles was a musical genius who was also an obnoxious person. He was indulged by fellow muiscians in his antics. Great artists are not always nice pepole. John Lennon and Woody Guthrie come to mind. C'est la Vie.
Incroyable...Attitude,humilité,talent inégalé.Lucidité sur sa condition et humour...Je parle même pas musique...Effectivement comment ne pas penser qu'il vient d'une autre planète ?...Sublime...
this host was so good to miles. So many weren't that i've seen and heard of, but you could tell Miles was diggin' it and engaged. What a master. So inspiring.
+Rocky Martin Very true, and Miles grabs him by the arm in an affectionate way at the end.. Miles got way too many people who didn't know his music at all, asking stupid questions. Disrespect as a stylistic thing. A shame. Why not have a musician interview him?
I still remember my first time hearing Bitches Brew, my ears and mind were definitely not prepared for what he was trying to say. It went completely over my head. After many listens, it is now hands down one of my most cherished albums ever. Experimental, sprawling, angular, dark, yet it grooves like nobody’s business. The magic that’s created within the interplay of each musician is uncanny and a true sonic journey. Truly one of the most unique, bizarre, and original pieces of art ever created. It opened my mind up to so many other forms of experimental music and all types of jazz.
I don't claim to be into this kind of jazz very deeply or understand it well, but Miles was a breed apart. That's obvious. He could be demanding, he could be difficult, he could be a perfectionist, but he served the music and showed enormous respect and appreciation for COMPETENT musicians sharing the stage with him.
I remember watching and recording this when it aired. LOVE Miles!! I was so fortunate to see him twice live. First time I seen him was in Newport R.I. at the JVC Jazz Festival back in 1986 and the second time was in 1987 in Boston. An ICON!
Steve Thomas that's Miles opinion...and it's bullshit...have you heard the modern jazz quartet ?? heard the Bass playing?... Superbowl it's superb !! come on mi!es is incredible but only human like all of us....MJQ would and could blow miles band that's playing this muzak right out of the park.... you are telling me that this band is playing jazz !! and can compare to what...
mrswimmyboy what's wrong with John Lewis influence ? and what truth?? truth is Mike's did not sound that great at this stage..and ain't p!ayin jazz....some truth in that
Even in this clip I am watching on You Tube on my laptop, w/o the greatest audio, OMG Miles just had the BEST SOUND EVER on that trumpet and what a genius. I am so happy our son through his study and love for Miles's legacy has taught me. Dick Cavett just had a great approach to the interviews, and I always appreciated his shows.
Distinctive personality, innovative as few in the world, in his kind. When the time comes and we'll talk about USA as we mention Persia, Egypt Greece and so on, we'll mention personalities as Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Archie Shepp, Parker, Gillespie, Powel, Mingus, Gil Evans and so many other greats of this region and art, that contributed and still do to civilization (not only or just culture). It's freedom! It can never be stopped.
At the end, all the people who thought it was more important to wave at the camera instead of listening to this unique musician playing in their midst.
Came here from the "Miles Ahead" trailer... can't wait to see that movie. Good interview. Bit weird in that spot where they talked about Davis getting pulled over for driving while black, but Davis was clearly some kind of wild genius.
Would agree with Dick Calvet on the Picasso comparison. Picasso changed how people viewed art, Davis changed the way people listened to music. Both were in the top genius level of artists of the 20th Century.
Miles Davis said he liked using the mute because it sounded like a person, and he could almost make it sound human at times. I always thought that was some brilliant comment only a musician would understand, but listening now I sorta get it
Respect to Dick Cavett who recognized the living treasure that Miles was. See Miles totally disarmed as he takes Dick's hand after Dick pays the most eloquent of tributes, 4:44.
This is definitely the best mood I've ever seen Miles in.
+Zach Johnson Dick Cavett. Recognize the greatness, treat them with respect, don't ask bullshit questions and be playful. Notice at the end he even puts his sunglasses on.
Check him at Arsenio Hall he was in a good mood
hard not to be with the best tv host ever.

"Don't play what's there, play what's not there." -Miles Davis
A musician's golden rule to improvising, I'd say
I'm not sure what that means.

royalcat10 but it could apply to film composition.....
7:03 sumbody musta “played what’s there”
Cavett was some of the best television has ever had to offer
The late great Sir Miles Davis was the epitome of cool. His individual style and music were impeccable.

man. never seen miles smile that much..ever!
I know, like he had a bromance with Cavett
Dick Cavett is in re-runs currently on my cable channel. It is amazing how much time was allowed back then for in-depth interviews with interesting people like Miles. This is very unlike today's deplorarble rush/rush soundbite pace.
Yeah, that is something we miss today
Dick Cavett was the coolest, most laid back talk show host. You could see the respect he had for musicians/artists.
maybe but usually came at the expense of being the straight white foil, especially in this interview.
Cavett was sometimes too ingratiating to guests by half, I agree. And sometimes too calculatingly "witty", self-congratulation via fake self-deprecating humor. How could ANYONE not love MILES DAVIS?

Rocky Martin because most musicians are also full of shit
Rocky Martin dick cavett has interviewed probably every famous an important people on the planet lol
Like a master musician knows that some of the greatest notes are those one doesn’t play, Cavett knew how not to talk when magic was happening.
Miles is a tough interview.
Genius! he influence Prince, but love how Prince influence him back.
Never seen Miles as relaxed as this in an interview. Credit to Dick who sometimes comes across a little awkward himself.
Miles is one of those mentors who allows musicians to just play....
Garth Webber's Guitar Solo is amazing!!
I saw him back in 1986 with this band in Pittsburgh. I had the pleasure of meeting him by accident after the show. Very friendly guy.
Miles cracks me up more than anybody who ever walked the earth. what fucking genius. people have no comprehension.

First time I see Miles Davis nice and kind and gentle
I'd love to hear Mr. Miles Davis singing blues, his 'smoky' voice is perfect for that
I don't claim to be into this kind of jazz very deeply or understand it well, but Miles was a breed apart. That's obvious. He could be demanding, he could be difficult, he could be a perfectionist, but he served the music and showed enormous respect and appreciation for COMPETENT musicians sharing the stage with him.
Sounds like you understand him quite well 👍🏻
1986. Bob Berg on sax. RIP. The guest actress played a role in the movie Scrooged, which ironically Miles had a cameo appearance in.
Love Miles so much!
Its rare enough that he doesn't wear shades for interviews.
I remember watching and recording this when it aired. LOVE Miles!! I was so fortunate to see him twice live.

Miles Davis Yo !!!
The Coolest Jazz Musician in History ... Miles Davis...PEACE
Miles ....héroe 🎺🎼
JUST AN AWESOME INDIVIDUAL , WHAT A TALENT , GIFT FROM GOD
Kind of a joke and kind of a cutting comment. Some truth to that, but its really John Lewis' influence he's talking about

I love the rapport between Miles and Dick Cavett. I always knew Cavett was cool and brilliant. So was Miles. Two kindred spirits.
I grew up listening to Miles Davis, This piece he's play almost sounds like A jazzed up version of Fever.🎺🎶🎼❤💯
Happy Birthday tomorrow Miles! We miss you.
GREAT video showing a relaxed Miles - loved the footage of him jamming at the end. Thanks so much!

R.I.P. Miles
I had the privilege of growing up knowing Mr. Davis. He taught me how to play the basics of “Jazz piano”!👍🏽😁

He looks so classy
Just Cool.

I love the Liberace joke :)

don't watch the movie, it's insulting trash.
+Henry Tudor Pole I agree
The movie is pretty bad. It starts out good, then falls apart and turns into some kind of hallucinatory nightmare trash.
"I wasn't trying to change music, it just happened" - Yeah this doesn't just happen to just any artist.
Would agree with Dick Calvet on the Picasso comparison. Picasso changed how people viewed art, Davis changed the way people listened to music. Both were in the top genius level of artists of the 20th Century.
LOL 9:54 NICK CAGE AND MILES IN THE SAME ROOM
I didn't believe it til I saw it, what a great moment in history!
Broke, how do you live in a mansion and drive a Porsche and be broke?....I would like to be broke!
Miles Davis said he liked using the mute because it sounded like a person, and he could almost make it sound human at times. I always thought that was some brilliant comment only a musician would understand, but listening now I sorta get it
7:32...all rightee now, 7:43..lead guitarist goes for his pedal, 7:52...what's Miles got up his sleeve?, 8:01...it's your solo young man.

Wow, Nicholas Cage and Miles Davis. Those are the last two people I would have expected to be in the same room together.
jmbermea I don't think Nicholas realized who was in front of him. Lol
